Laura is helpful with setting appointments and always gets back to questions/voicemails quickly. Terri answered all of my insurance and finance questions even before my first prenatal appointment. I should start out by saying that I received good care from Dr. Holmes and his staff, and delivered a healthy baby girl by C-section, which he skillfully performed. However, here are the things I wish I had known before I chose him as my provider: There were times during my labor and delivery that he didn't know who I was. He kept confusing me with other patients. This was entertaining in some instances and not in others - for example, when he confused me with someone else who under no circumstances wanted a C-section. My baby's heart was in distress, my own heart (with a documented and discussed history of arrhythmia) was tachycardic, my water had ruptured more than 30 hours before (a month prematurely), I was running a temperature, and I was only dilated to a 2, and yet *I* had to be the one to bring up the possibility of a C-section. He was shocked when I did, because he thought I was vehemently against surgical intervention. This, despite the fact that two days before at my 35 week appointment, we literally shook hands that he would lean toward C-section if things went south. Another instance of him not knowing who I was: my water broke at midnight, so I called the answering service. They took my name and gestational age, and within a minute I was speaking to the doctor who informed me to head to Banner Gateway. I saw him the next morning, where he looked at my chart and expressed surprise that I was only 35 weeks pregnant. This could have been dangerous if my baby had been any more premature than she was, as Banner Gateway isn't as well equipped to take care of premature babies as Banner Desert is. Even if the answering service failed to tell him my weeks of gestation, shouldn't he have asked? Or shouldn't he have remembered, considering I saw him 12 hours before that phone call, at my 35 week appointment? At first I thought it was neat that he spent so much time with his patients and that he does all the ultrasounds personally. But ultimately what that means is that he and his staff are over-extended, and you WILL wait at each appointment; possibly up to an hour. I couldn't figure out why he wouldn't just hire an ultrasound tech to re-distribute some of the work, because lord knows the man has plenty of demand. (I even had a hospital staff member say to me incredulously, "He sure delivers a lot of babies...") I assume he just doesn't want to pay another staff member, but the entire practice suffers as a result, and it doesn't look good for him. Tip: If you choose him as your provider, get into the habit of asking for the very first appointment of the morning. (And even then, you might have a wait, depending on how his early-morning rounds at the hospital go. But it's your best hope.) The ultrasound equipment is ancient; forget about seeing clear images of your baby. You'll be lucky if you can make out a spine or a head. My best friend was pregnant at the same time as me and the difference between our ultrasound photo keepsakes makes me sad. I had no concept of my daughter's face or profile before she was born. The office itself is very old and tired and decorated like an 80's Relief Society room. There's a Book of Mormon in the lobby. (I'm even Mormon but found that off-putting.) At my first appointment, they gave me a little trinket that I got the strong impression was intended to be distributed in the parking lots of Planned Parenthood clinics - a pin showing you the size of your baby's feet at 10 weeks, and I think there was a scripture? If I recall correctly? All of this to say, I did not get the impression that the doctor would be supportive of all of a woman's options and rights when it comes to pregnancy. At my six week follow up, he talked about prescribing me a birth control pill that could have caused my milk to dry up. Luckily I was informed enough to know that as a nursing mother I needed a pill without estrogen - but if I hadn't known that, it could have been disastrous to my milk supply. Also, as soon as I left my six week follow up, I realized he never cleared me for sex! I thought that was the whole point of the six week appointment!! It was never mentioned. I don't plan to have any more children, but if that changes, I won't be seeing Dr. Holmes again. He's a very nice man and his team is as wonderful as all the reviews say (Alejandra in particular is a true gem), but everything considered I cannot recommend the practice. read more

When I started going to Dr. Holmes 11 years ago - I had already had 2 miscarriages and was feeling discouraged as the Dr's I had previously seen, considered it not a big deal. I went to Dr. Holmes and was immediately welcomed with kindness and compassion. He worked with me to figure out what was going on. Later, when I lost my baby almost half way through my pregnancy, Dr. Holmes (as well as his kind nurses) spent time with me - they didn't rush me out, but met me again with extreme kindness, compassion and sympathy. Over the next 10 years, I would go on to have 4 babies - each pregnancy having its own high risk or crazy thing spring up. Dr. Holmes was pro-active in my care - sharing his knowledge, expertise, insights and thoughts as he worked WITH me to give me the best care possible. He allowed me to be a part of my care - listening to my concerns and addressing them thoroughly and waiting until I understood each time. He would discuss at length diagnosis, options and care at EVERY appointment I had (and over the course of 11 years with crazy pregnancies - I've had A LOT of appointments! ) He addressed post-pardum concerns and never left me feeling unimportant or on my own. Not only was Dr. Holmes an amazing Dr - but his staff is superb as well. Always answering questions, returning calls promptly, helping with insurance questions (and being extremely pro-active with insurance) and going above and beyond the usual service you receive at other offices. The staff would always welcome me to the office - excited as if I were an old friend. I have loved having Dr. Holmes as my Dr. and would recommend him to EVERYONE! read more

I am so thankful for Dr.Holmes & his staff they were always so nice and welcoming! Alejandra would always crack jokes with me and ask how I was doing but not like she was just a stranger asking more like a friend or family member and it always felt like that from the start! Dr. Holmes delivered my first child and he gave me the best first experience I could of asked for. When I ended up in the hospital at 24 weeks and after being sent home from the er because they said "nothings wrong" when I called him in the middle of the night he was determined to make sure the hospital checked me from head to toe and figure out what was wrong! He came and checked on me that morning before heading into work and made sure I was doing okay even though he could have just asked a nurse or even just called. I spent 4 days in that hospital and was miserable from the pain I was going through but every day Dr. Holmes came and checked on me. I was so greatful! Hes so heartwarming and he answers any question even if you think its dumb. I might have only seen him for 20 min at delivery but he came in the next morning once again CHECKING on me! This Doctor really cares about his patients. I wish all the other doctors were as caring and thoughtful as he was with my wife. If you are in AZ and need a good OBGYN then you might give him a try. We were new to the PHX area and had gone to 4 other OBGYNs' prior to Dr. Holmes and each one told my wife she was exagherating pain and said she was too young to have any serious complications. Dr. Holmes was the first to identify the signs of endometiosis and conducted the surgeory to take care of it. read more

Dr. Holmes is amazing! Dr. Holmes saved my life!!! He takes his time with his patients and will listen to your needs, wants, concerns. Dr. Holmes will do the work to figure out how to fix a problem and also try to figure out what caused it in the first place. He is not one of those doctors that are afraid to touch a patients, he comes in the room and sits down to talk to you and will go to any extent necessary to help with your medical needs. You will always see him NOT a PA, I really like that! Better than any female OB/GYN I have been too. I don't like that no one ever answers the phone and you have to leave a message and wait for a call back, but other than that I will never go to another doctor as long at I don't have too. read more

Dr. Holmes was highly recommended to me and at first I was unsure of him to be honest. My pregnancy was anything but normal and my twins kept throwing everyone for a loop. Didn't realize just how great of a man he was until I lost one of my sons at 34 weeks and was being told by everyone that I would need to carry my other son until I went into labor. He was compassionate and helped me to remember that as horrible as it all was that my living son was not ready. At 36 weeks I went into labor and in the middle of the night he assembled the best team you could find to give me an emergency c-section. My scar is actually quite beautiful. I went to my appointment today having an awful day. I had lost my voice, I realized I hadn't done my pre-appointment paperwork, didn't have my ID card, Aetna wasn't helpful, and I started to panic and freak out in the waiting room. I couldn't believe how helpful these girls were. They hugged me, calmed me down, did EVERYTHING they could to get me seen, even though my appointment time had come and gone. Dr. Holmes and his staff far exceeded my expectations and I felt comfortable as though I had been a patient for many years, even though it was my first visit! I was new to the area and needed to find a doctor but I also needed a prescription renewed. The office staff listened to my concerns, scheduled and the appointment went very smoothly. Dr. Holmes visited with me, asking questions and going over my history as though he were a family friend. I adore Dr. Holmes. He's exactly what every down & out expectant Mom needs! I lived in a very rural town with my first pregnancy & had a terrible obgyn. A good friend saw how sickly & underweight I was and recommended Holmes when we moved to Mesa for ASU. I got in by the skin of my teeth, mainly because I was deemed high risk on the phone. I'd lost 20 lbs in the first trimester and was super under weight. I couldn't even hold down water. He took one look at me and put me on a milkshake diet, plus found I had a bad UTI. He was furious the other doc never caught it, even with the current lab results from his office. I should have been put in the hospital, but he got me back on my feet. I loved every visit & his ultrasound was known as "the toy". He even gave me 4 free ones since insurance only covered 1. Delivery was smooth sailing. When I became Prego with #2, I looked forward to having him again. He did an outstanding job with this pregnancy too. I had preterm labor &/she came out purplish black 3 weeks early. Cord was around her neck. Her 1st Apgar was low, but a minute later, she had a high score. I was so happy to have him with both babies. Highly recommended & he's also very funny! read more

Dr Holmes delivered my first and (so far) only daughter. We could not have thought up a better experience from that eight week appointment through to the delivery and beyond. His staff is so friendly, Alejandra was a ray of sunshine and always made me feel comfortable during exams. I'd look forward to seeing her and the doc at every appointment. Dr. Holmes is a father himself, we'd always get mini anatomy lessons as he loved explaining the science behind how our bodies can build a mini human- I loved it! There were a couple times throughout my pregnancy when I was either sick or extremely uncomfortable and he was always available- even on those inconvenient days (Sunday morning) when I was desperate and couldn't wait until the next day to take my call and phone in meds. Dr Holmes is professional, kind... and most importantly knows his stuff! When it was 'go-time' I had never been happier to see a face when he walked into that delivery room! You can tell the health and comfort of the mother is his main focus and priority next to a healthy pregnancy. When it comes down to it the most important qualities in an OB for me is experience, transparency and professionalism. He is all that and then some. We'll be back for baby #2! read more

There is nobody else I would recommend. I found Dr Holmes on Google and Yelp due to not knowing any OBGYNs in the East Valley. I was picky with who I selected as I have OBs in the family that practice in other states so they told me what to look for. I could not have found a better doctor. My first 2 trimesters were easy, my 3rd was not. It started with a car accident at 29 weeks, my blood pressure increasing week over week, resulting in preeclampsia on the last day. When problems started to happen Dr Holmes took the best preventative measure. He constantly monitored me and the baby and if he was not comfortable with something he immediatley had a plan and would admit me for further observation. The last few weeks were unsettling and scary but he kept such close watch on my baby. He was easy to reach on off hours to answer any questions or tell me what my next steps are. Despite all the complications, I delivered a healthy baby girl 2 weeks early and I am very thankful for the prenatal care we received. Not to mention post natal. My blood pressure did not come down after she was born and he is continuing to monitor until he feels comfortable. I would also like to add that his staff is small, but amazing! It also helps that his office is right next to Banner Desert so if anyone has any issues arise, he can call and get you in right away and you just walk over (this happened many times). While I dont plan on having anymore kids, I highly recommend Dr Holmes for anyone (even nuerotic first time moms like I was). read more

I switched to Dr Holmes with 5 weeks left in my pregnancy. Best decision I ever made! He looked at my history and knew after just one visit that I have a rare blood clotting disorder. He noticed in one visit and my other doctor had me for a patient over a year and didn't catch that! The delivery went perfect! He let me know what was going on every step of the way. He was very polite and didn't seem rushed. He answered every question I had. When I got a fever a few days after I delivered I called the nurse line after hours and he gave me a call back in less than 2 minutes. I ended up needing an ambulance because I blacked out. They took me to the nearest hospital which was not Dr Holmes hospital. He checked in on me by phone and let me know that even though he couldn't be at the hospital, he was still able to monitor everything over the computer. I am so happy my friend referred me to him.
