Large sites, friendly staff, potable water and dump site. Out of the way campground but worth the drive.

I spent a week camping in an RV below the dam. It was very quiet, and the staff was very friendly. There were not many people in the park. The sites that I saw were clean, as was the shower and bathroom house near our campsite. read more

Let me preface this review with a few caveats, the event store just a few hundred feet of the park was awesome. Had a fireworks on 4th of July. The state did not. Fire reasons or whatever I understand. However, I would strongly advise anyone who wants to to go camping there to think twice. I boondocked 7 days at the point camp ground 214. Spent most of the time completely alone with wife, which is great. However, the night before the 4th. A storm rolled in with 80mph gusts and non stop rain, blew over tents and shook our travel trailer violently, seriously thought we were in trouble, afterwards we offered the tent campers dry blankets and extra sleeping bags for the night. The park ranger never showed up to check on the people there. No one showed up. Ok fine. We hot though it. However the day after the 4th. The park filled up, mostly tent camping, the quiet time at the park is 6 am to 10 pm. Evidently a camper nearby sleeping in his truck bed called the ranger to complain about our generator at 9 pm. I have baffle walls. I park my truck to block the noise, and always turn it off dead on 10, and never before 8 am. The park ranger showed up pounded on my door. To remind me to turn it off at 10. I understood, I have always understood this. Honestly, if you want a lake near your campsite. Drive 1 and half more hours to Pueblo reservoir. If you're tent camping the storms are absolutely deadly often here , lightening, crazy winds, rains that come like a fire hose. The rain literally, not figuratively, will blow right into your rv through any crack or crevice, unstoppable, The weather off the lake from may to August can be a real hazard, The point is the only place I have stayed, lake hasty is definitely a nicer part of the state park from appearance and amenities, I have stayed at John Martin for the last time . I am only going to boondocks on blm land for now on. I strongly suggest campers to avoid John Martin state park. read more

Disgusting. Dirty. Campsite fee + 'park fee' and then have to pay to use shower. And water is lead contaminated and unpotable. . Just a gross, filthy, place where clearly there is no pride in it. Will never return. read more

This place is very cool. It's more than just a big pile of water. This is a place natives Americans were hanging out at a long long time ago. There is a spot where one of them was inventing graffiti. He make animals and symbols and a lot of other stuff. I think his name was crazy Larry. They stuck him in his cliffs and crazy Larry drew his heart out read more

John Martin Reservoir should be renamed Frogsong Reservoir. Besides the hilariously flat song of a bullfrog, the night air is full of frogs' songs. It's not something you see in Colorado because it's usually too dry or cold at night for frogs. Stay at Hasty Campground. There are large, old trees throughout the campground, providing plenty of habitat for all types of birds and other wildlife. (The Point is apparently just an overflow spot). All of Hasty seemed thoughtfully appointed, with big sites, sheltered picnic tables, and metal campfire pits. However, do not camp in Site 34 as there is a mechanized pump running there all the time. (It would be fine for an RV if you constantly run your generator but would be obnoxious in a tent). It turns out $3.00 in quarters means your nice, hot shower lasts forever. The shower house is near the entrance but there are a couple of small, plumbed bathrooms throughout the campground. The shower house also has a washer and dryer as well as a community room. Instead of being trapped in your tent in a downpour, you can hang out in a small room with large windows that look out over the lake. Really, this is one of the nicest reservoir campgrounds I've been to in Colorado. I think the huge, old trees and overall layout is what makes it so memorable to me. read more

Really nice camp sites at Hasty Campground. 50 amp hookups, no water at sites though, only water spigots scattered around. Showers are pay, but fairly cheap, 50 cents for 3 minutes. Hot water with adjustable temperature too, a nice touch. Hiking trail was simple, but remarkable amount of wildlife. Multiple deer, rabbit, hare, and even a horned lizard. For those looking for 4G cellular service, know that you won't find any near the downhill side of the reservoir. We had to take the furthest campsite from the dam in order to get enough to get online. read more

Even with the water levels lower than normal this reservoir is still a great place that isn't crowded to go to for some fishing, boating, and water sports. Tons' of space to camp out if needed, or set up day camp. Some of the points are a little tricky to get too, but any truck should be able to make it down to the water. We did not camp here, but it looks nice, right on the water with lots of big trees. If you were coming here, as we were, to take a break from driving and go for a swim, don't bother! Although the Arkansas River is right next door and looks clear and sandy, the only place you're allowed to swim here is a tiny, weed-choked mud hole below the dam. It's called "Lake Hasty", and we beat a hasty retreat. read more
