However, I ultimately decided to because it seemed like a reasonable price compared to the other options in NYC. I would say, so far so good. We are a group of 8 which feels like a reasonable group size for a 6 week class. Any more, would be too many people. I like our instructor and find her to be quite funny, though I don't think she is trying to be intentionally. As far as I can tell, the facility seems nice, and it does not seem to be falling apart. The locker rooms are pretty clean, there's brushes for you to brush off the sand from your shoes, the courts (8 -12), can feel a bit warm, but I've attributed it to winter heating. The front desk people are ok, not friendly, but not not friendly - feels pretty neutral. I'm a beginner taking a course though, so what do I know. Maybe for more experienced players there are nuances that I just don't know. But for a beginner, I think RIRC does the job!

They have about 12 indoor hard courts that are very well maintained and well lit. The pricing here is by far the better compared to all the other places in the city. Off Peak it's $60/hr, Peak $105/hr. What gives this place the advantage is that it's much easier to book courts here at your preferred time than other places in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens. Especially if you are doing for more than an hour and/or more than one court. The place has a cool lobby / waiting area, with a snack bar, ping pong, and a pro-shop for racket stringing. Locker room is small but extremely clean and well maintained. The staff here is very friendly. My tennis league has voted to make this our weekly practice spot. My friends that I've played with here are huge fans.

Not that it matters, but I didn't know these were clay courts. The online reservation system is outdated and gives you the bare minimum level of information. The only silver lining of playing here is that it's a reasonable $15 an hour to play if you have the NYC tennis permit. The locker rooms and bathrooms are pretty dirty so I'm not even sure what those fees are going towards

I used the Mind Body app to sign up for a beginner class though I'm more advanced beginner. There were three of us on the clay court with Ben as our teacher. He gave fantastic instruction and was patient and charming. The tennis center has adult and junior classes, a gift shop with everything you need, friendly staff and friendly pricing. Prices are great for Manhattan and the company has three locations - 59th and York, 89th and York hidden in an apartment building, and another hidden INSIDE Grand Central Station. If you're suffering from insomnia, you can rent a court into the wee hours:-) 10 and 20 packs make their pricing comparable to Queens, and a steal for Manhattan. You pick your classes at your convenience on the app and can cancel without penalty with 24 hours notice. This flexibility is unheard of at other tennis sites in NYC I look forward to my next lessons at one of their sites. Highly recommended for tennis players at all levels.

The decor itself is very much classic Americana, with deep blue carpets the hallways, giant rugs, and paintings and art and statues everywhere. We were invited there to go to a charity poker tourney, I think one of the partners was a member there, and women were allowed as it was a charity/social event. One note - all members and guests were required to wear suit & tie. They have spare ties if you didn't have one with you. If you had a bag, there was a coat and bag check near the front. Member names I think on the wall behind the concierge, and you had a room at the front if you insisted on talking on a phone.

While I don't have specific recommendations for how to alleviate this situation in all cities, I can provide some assistance when it comes to visiting Manhattan in New York City. While searching for some "travel tennis" my record has been mixed. For example, on another trip earlier this year I went 0-fer (despite calling and emailing at least half a dozen Clubs). Well no such drama on this trip. My first (and only) call was to the Manhattan Plaza Racquet Club. Their staff was friendly on the phone (and in person) and they did an outstanding job of arranging a Singles match for me (at my ability level) with a member who was also warm and welcoming. Their 5 indoor courts are well maintained and offer year-round opportunities to play. Quite frankly, when considering all of the times that I've attempted to play "travel tennis", I've never encountered a friendlier, more welcoming, or more helpful staff. I merely posed the innocuous question of, "Are there any opportunities to play at your Club while traveling, even though I'm not a member?" I was then so inundated with the options provided to me that I literally needed to take written notes. Sadly, if someone had posed the same question to my tennis club in San Diego the would have been slammed so quickly in their face that it would have immediately broken their ! The costs associated with your choice of play here are not insignificant, but a traditional membership is not required. If sportime can set up some designated pickleball courts, this could easily become the best place to play.
