I went to this school three times now for services. First two times were wonderful. This last time I went I was there for six hours for a mini partial highlight and a haircut, there were so many questionable things that happened. One of which was the student bleached my hair and left three inches or more of roots? Then, didn't apply the toner when I asked about it at the wash bowl, took me back to her chair and combed my untoned hair for 30 minutes with a fine tooth comb. Then, took me back to the bowl to tone and re-comb my hair. It was just weird and unlike anything I've experienced. I understand they're learning here, but the fact an instructor wasn't concerned I was there for so long was sooo alarming. I stayed an hour past close while all the students and instructors run out of the building. I would've been understanding if my hair turned out what I was kinda expecting, but my roots are still really dark and it's not blended well. It's mind blowing they didn't wonder what this girl was doing for six hours. I tried calling to have a teacher call me back and no one has called. Apparently I have to go back in and have it evaluated. I would just stay away if this is how they're gonna treat clients. School or not, don't make people struggle on their own or wait six hours for a service. read more

I went to get my hair done for full head of highlights and the student that was gonna work on me had quite a few questions to ask from a teacher. She came back crying before she even started my hair. The teacher told her she wouldn't help her!! This girl then started on my hair and tries 3 more times to get this teachers help! Still the teacher refuses!! My hair ended up having som much that just detached because the bleach had gone too far, it looked like I was a poodle getting a hair cut cause that's how much fell...the toner wasn't working properly for her, she couldn't figure out how to help my hair! She asked for help from her teacher (who's named Madison) and was refused! She is a freaking TEACHER! That's literally her job! Yet all she cared to do from 10am-5pm was talk to 4 other student girls like they were besties... she basically made a student to fail on my hair! That's wrong and I'm pissed beyond belief! I really want this Madison lady FIRED! Idk how it'd work in this field but she shouldn't even be allowed to have her license after this crap! I had to walk out of the salon with toner still in my hair because I was late to picking up my son... and she had tried everything she could in her knowledge and it wasn't reacting nicely for her... I can't blame the student because she tried even after the teacher was blatantly rude like that. My hair still isn't toned properly, I lost so much hair, and I have a crazy amount of breakage. read more

Had a great experience here. Not many places like to do spiral perms anymore and they were up to the task. I really appreciated the instructor keeping a close eye on the progress and I wasn't there any longer than I would have been in a salon. Definitely recommend! read more

I went in with a pretty complicated haircut. It was a tall order for a student. Together with the instructor, they did a fantastic job. It looks like I've just come from an expensive salon at a fraction ($16!) of the cost. Also, they were able to get me in at the time I needed and even when I had to call and change my appt. at the last minute. My hair looks great, if I do say so myself. read more

I've been going to Johnny Matthews off and on over the years and lately, almost weekly for a wash/style and to get my undercut cleaned up. They do a great job, just be sure to ask for a student that is a level 3 or higher when booking. They seem to have more confidence. read more

They did a beautiful subtle ombré on me. I had silvery white hair before. I loved it but with up keep and family opinions it was not longer for me. They were as professional as a beauty school can be. I had to wait a little but oh well. (Waiting room and for her to mix) normal school things. I appreciate the deal posted outside downtown. I would recommend to any one. I personally pick the highest level possible cost is not really a huge deal for me. With how light my hair was so definitely was worth the 80$. The instructors checked and the girls weren't afraid to talk to them which I like, shows they actually care about students and their schools reputation. read more

Horrifying experience! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE! I took a picture in with me for the color i wanted..simple red with blonde highlights..left with orange hair. Called to speak to manager and only received attitude and was hung up on. Showed up at the "fix" appointment only to be belittled and made fun of by the owner..i ended up having to leave while crying because i did not feel safe surrounded by all the laughing employees. I luckily found a master stylist that saved my hair but it cost over 300 because the damage caused by Johnny Matthews. I put reviews on their Facebook page and was called a "media liar" by the owner, two days later he emails me to offer to settle my complaint i tell him my demands and he agrees then ignores my next few emails and time to meet. He then emails the next week requesting a time to meet to give me a written apology and compensation..when i met with him he tried to force me to sign a gag order, offered zero apology and insulted me by only offering part of the cost to be reimbursed. Heading to court to sue Johnny Matthews now. These people do NOT care about customers..they only want your money and do not care if your hair is destroyed. read more

I was a little skeptical at first. I have never gotten my hair done at a school before. But I was so wrong. Maria did my hair, and she was SO sweet. She listened to what I wanted, and she paid special attention to my hair. She was very cautious, and when things got a little confusing for her, she wasn't afraid to ask for help. Went in as a walk-in today for their 10 foils for $15 special. I was worried I would end up orange, damaged, or with big old-fashioned chunks of blonde. My stylist was Amber and did an amazing & super professional job! Seriously, it looks as finely weaved and color perfectly blended as any higher-end salon experience I have had. Buyer beware! Instructors at this school will mislead you for money. I had come in for a simple highlight. Or what I would later learn is something called a "paint" Where a splash of color is put in. Along with a cut. Simple enough right? Wrong. The young woman who worked on me was clearly a student and needed help. Ok NO PROBLEM. Its a SCHOOL. So the instructor comes over. An older gentlemen. And he proceeds to talk to the student like I am not even there. Rattling off a bunch of terminology I didn't understand. I tried to cut in and say "hey you know I'm not really married to the idea of putting this color in. I can just get the cut and be on my way" But he insisted it was no problem and continued to pressure to have it done. I finally relented thinking "well this will be no big deal. its no different than last time I had it done" About an hour later we are still putting foils in my hair and I start to wonder what is going on. I see DARK dye being put in. (I came in for caramel highlights so this made no sense) I start to ask questions and the Student got nervous. She clearly didn't want to be doing what her teacher said but she was doing her best. NOW at this point I still had not been informed how much THIS WOULD COST. I assumed, that what I ask for is what I ask for still and costs the same. But we are well past the point of no return. So I wait. THREE... HOURS... LATER.. we are finally done. My cut is done exactly as I wished (because go figure the student didn't have someone else hanging over her shoulder) and then I get the bill. OK.. let me say. My hair looks ok. It looks nice. BUT IT DOESN'T LOOK $100 nice. It's more of dishwater blonde and I have lowlights put in that I A) didn't ask for and B) CANT EVEN SEE! IM furious but keep my cool. The poor student was totally at the mercy of these thieves. I paid it. Gave her a tip and walked out. I called as soon as I got home to see if I could get ANY satisfaction after this. An offer of a free haircut and a weak apology. And insistence that the student was somehow at fault here. Sure. I should have been consulted. BUT WHEN I SAID I didn't need it the teacher should have listened. Or treated me like something other than a product. I feel like it was a ploy just to get me to spend money. I didn't get what I wanted, I wasn't listened to, and I got screwed. Save yourself the headache and go to a normal salon, the price is about the same anyway and perhaps.. your style choices wont be made for you. read more

WORST BLOWOUT EVER! Stay away, even for FREE! I actually SPED home...seriously, SPEEDING to get in the shower and get their awful, smelly products off my head, and completely re-do my blowout. I do a better job myself! I specifically....SPECIFICALLY---described what I wanted...the ends together and flipping different directions, bangs sideswept....somehow I left with straight, lackluster, DEAD hair, hanging down like it was old cotton candy....the ends just straight.....regular bangs....what the fuck, can't your people listen? Shameful, and I will be letting everyone I know hear about it. read more

My hair is now very damaged, I guess that's what 4 hours of bleach will do to hair. I kept telling them that I didn't want warm highlights, and that was exactly what they gave me. The young woman who did my hair was sweet and attentive, but her instructor was telling her to do the opposite of what I was asking for, and unfortunately she listened to him. I had virgin hair (never been heatstyled, or dyed or anything) so I made sure they would use oloplex #1 in the bleach solution to keep my hair's integrity, and they assured me they would and said my hair would not get fried. Well it did, and I guarantee they did not use oloplex #1 during the bleaching process, maybe they used #2 afterwards for a conditioning treatment, but that was not what I was asking for. Also, I was quoted $45 and it was $115 so a little bit misleading. My hair is extremely fine, and all I had done was partial highlights on the top portion, which took 5 hours. read more

I have been here twice. The first time was with a level 4 stylist ($14) They have 4 levels based on experience. She was fairly fast and capable. She graduated/left, so i decided to try a level 1 (only $8!) this time to see the difference. Her name was Hayley, and she was very nice. The main difference with level 1 to 4 i would say is .... time. This time took a good 15 to 20 minutes longer on my second visit, and the master stylist had to come over 3-4 times to check on my cut (which makes sense with a less experienced student). That's fine, and i don't mind since i had time, as long as the cut turns out the way i want it (which it did). Long story short, if you're in a hurry, level 4, if not, level 1. The only reason i did not give 5 stars was the music. They were playing this god awful whiny country music, and it was killing my experience. I would recommend they keep it more modern, including, but not limited to: House, down tempo, acid jazz, ambient, you know, something you would here in a trendy cafe or venue maybe? Keep it upbeat and modern. Remember... its what the customer wants that matters! Maybe you like country, but a lot of people don't (including me, yuck!). P.S. Matthew (part owner) was there and personally had the music changed for me after he was finished doing some finishing touches on my hair. *applause* P.S.S. This place is also a lot cleaner/more modern looking than the Phagan's off Lancaster. That place was like high school with ash trays... read more

My friend, Kayla, started school here and told me if I ever needed a haircut to contact her or come in and she will cut it for $10(she's a beginner). I had been wanting to get my haircut for the longest time anyway, so it was perfect!! Keep in mind that I, and like most might be as well, was skeptical on going to a hairdressing school. I figured I would give it a try! Walking in I saw that they had a products they use on your hair that you can buy, like at other salons. I loved that she was super careful and was making sure she was cutting it right so she would ask her instructor for help, she was walking around helping others. It's safe to say that I would definitely come back to Kayla and get my hair cut or maybe colored anytime! Good experience and loved that the instructors are there to help! read more

Went in to get a haircut from Shantiel. She was very sweet and efficient. The appointment lasted a little over an hour, but I wanted it done right. Johnny, the instructor, showed her how to make the layers a little more gradual. She was very eager to learn and apply the technique. I really liked my entire experience. I paid $14. The place was a little noisy, but hey, they're just students wanting to have a little fun. I will be back in the future. read more

I will not be going back to Johnny Mathews again. The stylists seem friendly and competent but I don't feel I received good customer service from an instructor. I understand it's a school but the instructors should be setting the example. I got my hair cut and colored by Bella back in June. Bella was super nice and tried very hard to give me what I wanted. She consulted her instructor Francesca on the color of dye. I wanted something dark and dramatic from my usual light brown hair and Francesca told me she wouldn't do it if I wasn't planning on keeping the dark color up. Bella did a beautiful color job for me, but it wasn't what I wanted. Bella told me the school offers a complimentary hair cut in between colors so I paid my $70 for cut and color and left. I just called to schedule my complimentary hair cut and I was told again by Francesca that they don't offer complimentary hair cuts. It was a promotion offered in June to get a free hair cut at the time of your color. I explained to Francesca that's not what I was told and she said if I had called back in June she would've compt it. It was very obvious they get plenty of people coming in for their students to learn with her tone and "I really don't care about you" attitude. read more

Emalee Brown, a student here cut my children's hair and did a terrific job! My son is 10 and is getting particular about his hair and my daughter is 8 and mostly wears pony tails. Emalee had a wonderful manner with them and both kids were happy and so was this mom! The staff was nice and the instructors were on hand when the students needed help. I am not going to lie. I only came in because of a Groupon. I have damaged my hair pretty bad trying to lighten it and when I saw the offer of a split in treatment on groupon I was very interested. Upon closer inspection, there was a second option of a Brazilian blow out smoothing treatment. Not knowing the difference, I called the place and spoke with someone who said the more expensive smoothing treatment would be most beneficial to me so I booked it and bought the groupon. When I arrived I had to wait 15 min because the student they booked me with did not show up. So another student Kayla Christianson did the service for me. It is a huge process so she had another student (who's name I didn't catch) help, which do believe cut the time in half. The instructors were around and making sure everything was going okay. Both students had done this before and seemed comfortable with the process. I was just a little bummed that the treatment (while making my hair super smooth) didn't do much for the damaged ends that I was trying to fix. This is not Kayla's fault I am not sure who I spoke with on the phone. I am going to try and go back and have Kayla trim my hair and do the split end treatment. SO all-in-all I had a pretty positive experience, I mean I am returning for more services. I also felt that the prices were decent seeing as these services are quite costly and I escaped under $100. I have to say remember to bring CASH to tip your student, as I didn't have any and felt like a jerk. read more

I've been here a few times and the haircuts have been decent for the price. It's great quality for the price. However, after looking at my hair in the mirror after a few days the length seems to be uneven now. Also a creepy old white guy, who was probably the teacher, cut my bangs and grossly had the back of his hands groping my boobs while he was cutting my bangs. Gross, watch out for him. You definitely do not need to be anywhere near boobs to cut bangs. read more

Johnny Matthews claims to be a high-end training school/salon but it's nothing but a bunch of phonies. The students are disrespectful and will talk about you an earshot away with their fellow peers. I called to schedule an appointment and when the phone was answered I was greeted with an annoyed tone and sarcastic answers. I went in to the school with hopes that whoever answered was just having one of those days, I also hoped I would come out a regular customer but after the chaotic and unprofessional manner in which I experienced I will NEVER set foot in there again. I will tell all my family and friends to steer clear of that money hungry school. The girl who worked on my hair was named Ashley, I went in for asking for very simple haircut and in response I got an eye roll and attitude. As I was leaving I noticed a woman (who I thought was a student because of the manner in which she was acting but learned later on that she indeed was one of their instructors) was laughing at me with the girl who just cut my hair. I can only imagine what they were saying. I believe her name is Shawna. If you are a fun, nice, well rounded person this is not the place for you to get a haircut. I know the prices are cheap, but so are the people and coming here would definitely be a waste of your time/money. read more
