I was excited to learn of a new salon academy via Groupon. I've had great experiences at salon academies before and it's great to give student opportunities to practice. I was able to easily schedule an appointment online for an Experience facial. You can choose who you'd like to with based on level or let them choose for you. I didn't have a preference so I was instantly paired with Valeria. The moment I walked in the salon, I was greeted and assisted in checking in. I had asked if it was possible to add a brow wax, which they were able to add on for me. Valeria greeted me about 15 minutes before my scheduled appointment, shook my hand and introduced herself. I was able to fill out a paper based on my needs or concerns. She then took me back to the massage/facial room. It was quiet and peaceful with relaxation music. She gave me a robe to change into and a bin to place my personal items. She even offered a pillow for my back and legs to get comfortable while she began setting up. The facial experience was incredibly relaxing and soothing. I nearly fell asleep. She took her time to go through each step, even massaging my shoulders and head. The only thing I would change would be to change gloves so when massaging through the hair and head, you aren't walking out with super greasy strands of hair. I had just washed my hair the day before and it was loaded with moisturizer and very greasy post facial. Other than that, perfection! Post facial I was taken out into the main salon to have my brows waxed. The man working the front desk when I checked in came to ask me about my facial and chatted with me for a few minutes. He was incredibly nice and great to chat with. Valeria touched up my brows, while ensuring she was being gentle. It didn't hurt at all and she did a great job touching up my unruly hairs. I had a great experience at the Summit Salon Accademy and I look forward to trying out other salon experiences, including taking my daughter for her first mani/pedi. He said they didn't have time I would need to reschedule or just get a color. OK, 1/2 of what I wanted. OK, said I would come back next week for the highlights. They go away again...im here for over an hour already...again he comes back and says we can't do your hair. You will not be happy!!!! I always enjoy my time at Summit Academy getting my nails done. They always do a good job and boy was I blown away to see the new pedicure chairs and manicure table; what a wonderful upgrade! The lighting is so much better and the seating comfortable both for the operator and myself. I had a great experience with Kaitlyn. As this was my first time ever going to an academy, I was slightly nervous. I chose a level 5 stylist, which means they are almost done with their schooling. Kaitlyn was super sweet and did a wonderful job. The teachers were always available if she had a question or needed help. I actually did a big change and added bangs! I have been growing out a pixie for a year and a half, and I just wanted a little change. Kaitlyn did a great job trimming my hair and then had the teacher cut the bangs. She styled it super cute. I've been going to summit salon for the past 3 years. I've gotten multiple cuts and hilights and have recommended it to many of my friends but this last time I went was very disappointing. As you can see in the photos the hilights were awful and I was leaving on a trip the next day so couldn't get them fixed. The girl that did my hair was very kind and willing but I was leaving the next day and would be out of town for a month. I had to pay a professional to fix it and was the most disappointing part was that the school didn't care. I tried reaching out after paying almost $150 and seeing about a partial refund but they wouldn't even get back to me. This would be a no for me. Decided to try the salon academy out, as I just wanted something simple and thought I'd save a little money. Well, I walked out with NOT what I asked for, and it cost as much as where I used to go! I went in with natural brown hair, asking for subtle blonde highlights. Showed pics and specifically said I liked my brown and just wanted some blonde weaved in. First off, know the lighting in the salon doesn't represent what you'll see outside, in your home, in your office.... Really anywhere else. In the salon, it looked like my natural hair with no actual blonde and barely any color variation. Disappointing, especially when I paid the bill. Then I got home, and my husband said, "I didn't know you were going to do a different color!"... ?!?!? Went to look in the mirror, and not only did I still not have blonde highlights to speak of in that lighting, but my whole head of hair had a reddish tinge. At this point, I'm trying to give it a little time for my hair to recover, then I'll be going back to my old place to see if they can fix me up. So my little experiment of "I'll try something new", gave me hair I don't like (right before vacation) damaged my hair and is costing me way more, as I want to get it fixed. I had my second facial here today using Groupon so it was about 50% off. The first student I worked with did a few months ago a great job and I was excited to go again. Naomi worked with me and she was so friendly, calming, and did a great job overall! It lasted for about an hour and included multiple facial masks, moisturizers, hot towels, and a steamer. The people in the front weren't the most pleasant on both of the times I visited, but I'm so grateful for the friendly students that I've gotten the chance to work with. Years ago I used to go to summit beauty salon all the time. I had good success mostly in perms and cuts. Fast forward many years I decided to go get my hair colored and cut. Given that I know these are students and they're still working to become better stylist, you would think that since they're on the floor working they would have some knowledge of what they're doing. I had my hair highlighted, never before had I needed to use a toner on my hair. This gal was adamant that I needed a toner and went ahead and charged me $30 to put one on. On. Meanwhile I go home with brassy hair. Went to Sally's to get something to help with it but still no success. I've tried to contact the salon many times with different numbers and haven't been successful in finding a number that works to actually talk to someone. So it looks like I'm going to have to go 15 mi out of my way to The salon to actually be able to talk to someone in person. I'm very frustrated and next time I'll just pay an extra $100 to get it done by a professional! read more

Camile was a great student, I hope she decides to be a Esthetician, she is careful and thoughtful. Was relaxing and my face feels amazing. The only reason I have given 4 instead of 5, I was supposed to get a full with eye rescue mask and lip conditioning treatment along with my pores cleaned, which would have meant a scrub was applied. I've been working with Auriel on my hair for the past year and she's been amazing! I saw her every two weeks and she really helped me improve the health of my hair. I kept going back because the price is unbeatable and it's awesome to watch everyone learn and grow. I didn't like having to call the call center, but if you find someone you like, definitely book in person or get their contact info. The students are in great hands and I do recommend checking them out! I've been to several beauty schools in the Portland area for facials and this is by far the worst. I mean it's hard to get a bad facial as you're being pampered and as long as the products are decent how bad can it be? This was my 2nd experience there and the young women who performed the services did the best they could. So many easy fixes would really take this place to another level but they just don't seem to get it. First of all they have no way to contact them if you have a question. When you arrive even though there is ample space for a waiting room or at the very least a chair while you wait. I'm disabled and almost 69 and it felt awkward sitting at a station. When you get to the facial room there are separate spaces but they are all open and not at all private. You can either get undressed where anyone coming in the door or in the main salon can see you or anyone walking by or choose to go into their tiny bathroom where there is no place to put a purse but the back of the toilet or in the sink. There are no hooks to hang your belongings or a table to put jewelry on. Hooks- even stick on ones and curtains to cover the front opening don't have to be expensive. Not one instructor came in to check on me or the students the entire time I was there. When I left and gave a tip and cashed in my Groupon. no one bothered to tell me how much orange pumpkin mask was still on my face. It took 3 baby wipes to remove it! If it wasn't for the Groupon I wouldn't have given them a 2nd chance. Needn't say I won't return. read more

Not sure if this is beauty school or clown school. So many of the students with brightly colored hair - purple, pink, green, blue, etc. - and dressed in such silly clothes (tights or sweats, animal prints) that looking around you might swear their next class is how to fit into a very small car. The students don't look professional, they just look sloppy. Although, they are happy. Everyone very cheerful. During three visits (two different students), I've been fortunate to get a nice cut and highlight every time. The last time I was there, I also opted for getting my nails done. A simple polish. It looked terrible, lumpy and streaked. Why do I keep going there? Saves me money. Why should you go there? You can save money, too. Just call ahead and make sure to ask for a student stylist who is more experienced. It will make a difference. read more

I had a great experience at Summit! My appointment was for a facial with Georgia. Here are the pros and cons from my visit (getting the not-so-good stuff out of the way first): Cons: This is a beauty school, not a spa. It's noisy and not the most comfortable treatment room. The padded table was pretty hard. Pros: Georgia took the time to understand my specific skincare needs, selected appropriate products, and her technique was outstanding. I've had a lot of skincare/spa services in my life and not only was this was one of the best facials I've ever had, it was only $28. If I had paid $150 at a spa for the work Georgia did today I would have left just as happy! I'll be back for sure. read more

Samantha Winters took all the unsureness and worries that comes with getting your hair done at a beauty school and exceeded my expectation. Starting with a gentle and soothing hair wash and treatment, I couldn't have been more relaxed. The water was a perfect balance of warm but not burnimg and she was so delicate with my hair. I was truly impressed from the beginning! After the heavenly wash Samantha walked me through the steps she would take in order to give me the look I was going for. This was so helpful and professional. Normally when a person is holding scissors to your hair you feel uneasy but Samantha made be feel confident and excited to get my hair cut. I set up a 9am appointment. At 9:20 no one even approached me yet and all the people in there were sitting around chatting and texting and no one has even approached me yet. My cat is sick, my car was shaking and smelled weird on my way over, but I waited 2 weeks for an appointment so I still came because I needed a change in my life. This was a big deal for me. I finally went up to one of the girls and asked what was going on and she said that my student would come over when she's ready. I found out later this was the "lead" person. She had black hair and light skin. After finally getting to the spot I would be worked on the girl said I would need 3 bowls for my hair which would cost $98.. only $20 less than a regular salon. And would potentially take 5 hours. I had to be at work 4 hours later. Then she talks to the main girl (same one who was rude to me before) who comes over and says because I did henna in my hair 3 Months earlier that dying it would dye my hair green.. ridiculous! So they basically refused to treat me. I went to a regular salon a week later and they had no issues whatsoever and my hair turned blonde - not green! Going into a place like this you have low expectations but my experience here was so incredibly wrong and frankly, I believe, discriminatory that I had to post this. Not cool. read more

As this is only a school and not an actual spa, not much is to be expected. However, much less about the service, the students get treated like dog piss. The instructors will gossip about the colored students, and it would be clearly visible that everybody involved was incredibly uncomfortable. It makes the whole schooling process very hard to watch. It is a much better idea to go schooling at a more competent "academy". Rated 2 stars because although the curriculum was decent, it's a shame to have to take part of the whole high school drama with these so called "adults" read more

I would NOT recommend any service at this academy. They are not monitoring or teaching while the students work. I was rushed to ER after waiting 25 minutes for my scheduled facial. The student left me alone on the bed with burning solution soaked cotton balls on my eyes. I had to sit up, ask for help to get to a sink to start rinsing. They did not offer anything but a cold pack. I left for urgent care, and asked for the solution that left on my eyes. The actual warning label on the solution says: "causes eye irritation, if inhaled, could cause death." YES...that is what it says! Unbelievable to me the grave negligence. I have blisters and damaged skin over both of my eyes. read more

Cons: - salon didn't have the most pleasant scent. - the little wrap I wore had a Velcro strip that was just a tad itchy and uncomfortable. you have to position it right. - said wrap and table/blankets didn't have a super clean appearance. - you share a room with another client with a divider in between during your facial so it's not the most private or personal setting, but again you get what you pay for. - I didn't get my full hour. it was closer to 50 minutes. - only cash tips accepted. read more

I explained what I liked, the student suggested low lights for dimension, she spoke with her instructor, they both spoke to me, she was very friendly and did a fantastic job. It did take almost 4 hours but it was worth it. I liked the people & atmosphere a lot more than Paul Mitchell. Update: I went in for a trim & it didn't go well. Too short. They're students and learning.. I was nice and the instructor took over evening it out and thanked me for "letting them learn". I also wanted my hair less brassy and left disappointed after all that was done. It's seems to be a gamble but everyone means well. read more

This week I have been touring the local cosmetology schools in an attempt to narrow down and chose one to attend; I had a wonderful experience at Summit Salon Academy. To give a bit of background on myself, I'm a military veteran, and have spent the past 6 years going to college, working in business, wellness and coaching; I have experience in beauty supply retail sales, come from a family of barbers. In other words, I have a little bit of life experience to guide me on my search. The staff was friendly, when I had a service (although it was not perfect- I didn't expect it to be) the student who worked on me was wonderful. But what really impressed me was the co-owner, Chris, who I met for a walk though and to discuss the school. Of all of the schools I've toured so far, this was by far the best person-to-person experience I had with a member of the administration. Chris was friendly, enthusiastic, honest and not pushy or arrogant at all. He articulated, wonderfully, what they do to help the students learn and build their clientele and business knowledge; I could have talked to him for hours about business alone. All of the local schools have specific strengths and in my opinion, the strength of Summit Salon Academy is the friendly atmosphere and focus on business knowledge and support. Being that business is equally important (arguably more important) than actual cosmetology skill, to actually build a livable income, I'd highly recommend this school to anyone who is lacking in that arena. My only critique/disappointment is that I didn't feel particularly inspired, artistically, by the surroundings/vibe. But they are doing a lot of remodeling right now to modernize the salon floor and art, without business, won't get you too far. So, in closing, this place is spot on. Professional, a mature vibe from the students, and the best business support. If I were going to send my daughter (16) to a hair school in the Portland area, I'd vote for this one. Additionally, their salon, Anastasia, has very high reviews online- which is a reflection of both the owners and the quality of stylists. Just can't say enough good things! read more

I bought a Groupon for a haircut/all over color/style package for Summit. It was very affordable! However it was challenging to book an appointment that would work into my schedule (they're open 9am-4 or 5pm weekdays only). I would advise to book weeks in advance; spots fill up quickly. The location of the academy is less to be desired in a - in my opinion - sketchy part of Tigard. The building is small, pretty old & run down. The salon and bathrooms were a bit messy but I reminded myself that it is a school, not a upscale salon. The staff/instructors were relatively friendly but the students themselves were very friendly & attentive to their clients. I was assigned to a wonderful student named Lexi. She did an excellent job at helping me figure out what I wanted to do with my hair and checked in with her instructors a few times to make sure she was doing everything right. We finished within about 2 hours. I was very pleased with her and her work. She's well on her way to a professional & a lot of the other students there are as well. The only downside to the outcome was I left with some color "goo" all over my ears but hey, that stuff can be hard to wash out, especially if you as the stylist don't want to soak your client's entire head/face/neck at the washing station. My mom has been going here and has had an okay experience, so she booked me an appointment with a groupon for a facial, haircut, and highlights. I am so disgusted I will never go back. The student did the extractions during my facial with her fingernails rather than a tool. This is so unhygienic and absolutely what all dermatologists recommend not doing because of the dirt and bacteria that can get into your pores. My face afterwards felt dry, with red and inflamed spots. I was so shocked and felt bad I couldn't even speak up. I wondered if that was just how they were training students to do facials. If I wanted to just disgustingly pop pimples I would've stayed home. Then she proceeded to completely fuck up my hair. The highlights she put in start at a hard line of bleach a few inches down from the roots. The color is uneven all over, and the toner she used left my hair tinted green. All of this took so long I never even got the haircut. It's not worth the cheaper cost. They also charged us extra for all the bleach and toner she used on my hair, I was only told it would be about $20 extra, was shocked and added insult to injury when I got to the cash register and was asked to pay $80 extra, on top of the groupon. read more
