OMG I've heard about this place before but never been...made the drive down today to get crab and scallops for our Valentine's Day/wedding anniversary dinner. It. Was. Incredible. Definitely a great fish market. A good selection of quality seafoods at a premium price. Love their crab dip. It's excellent and I will always find room in my fridge for this plastic container. I'm sure Johnny's has the best seafood around, but they need a little work on the customer service front. I was just about to make the drive 45 minute drive to Barrie to do a train pick-up and get some shrimp en route. Google maps had me arriving at 6:54 and they close at 7, so I gave them a quick call first to make sure I'd be ok arriving at that time. I'll add it's Friday of a long weekend. No dice. They start to shut things down an hour early, I was told, and by 7 they're out the door. I get it...I've been that kid itching to leave work on a Friday night, but pretty sure the owner wouldn't have done the same thing for a $50 order. I wasn't asking them to stay open for an extra half hour, I was just asking if I arrived at 7:01- given I've made the effort to call ahead, would they serve me. Hard no. We are from Newfoundland and I have lived in Ontario for 25 years. Been to many fish markets over the years for everything from a pile of lobsters, shrimp, cod, Atlantic salmon (these are the most common things we get). We moved to Barrie one year ago and We have been to Johnny's many times...its my new favorite spot and can honestly say its the freshest fish/seafood I have EVER purchased in Ontario and the best service! Johnny rocks and so does his team...they've even carried my well packed live lobsters to my jeep for me (so fresh you think he yanked them out of the a secret hole to the Atlantic ocean that he must have in the back of his store). Yesterday he custom cut Atlantic fillets for my portion size diet and gave me helpful HEALTHY tips to cook it...and I picked up fresh Cod to pan-fry for the hubby and My 7-yr old....the cod fillets fell apart during frying, hubby says because it's that damn fresh! Couldn't get fresher if he went out and caught it himself! It melted in your mouth!!! I cannot say enough about this store! If you love fresh fish and seafood, you must checked this store out!
