Not everything is vintage or used, but they have soo many nice items! Walking around was soo cool and there were a lot of amazing things to look at. Staff was great and very friendly. I ended up getting this insanely beautiful silk, beaded kimono that I fell in love with on first site. It was soo much pricier than I anticipated it to be, but it was too unique and beautiful not to get (to quote my guy). This has always been a nice little store in which to look around. But I never bought anything until 12/24/25. Yes. Christmas Eve 2025. I moved away from San Diego 10 years ago, so I was in SD to spend Christmas with my mom. While in town, I wanted to go to Old Town to pick up my favorite food at one of the restaurants in Old Town, but I thought I'd look around at some of the shops since I've been away for so long. I stopped into the Johnson House and immediately wondered why I had never bought anything there. Everything in there is so fabulous. There was a purse there that was so shiny and pretty, and it kept calling to me: "You want me. Buy me. I'll be your Christmas present. I love you and I know you love me." Well... how could I deny that little purse a forever home? I bought it and used it that very night at a Christmas Eve dinner party. From now on, whenever I visit my mom, I'm going to go to the Johnson house and make a purchase. I can't wait to see what I'm going to buy the next time I'm in San Diego. :) P.S. My mom and I had Christmas buffet at Humphreys on 12/25 and I put my little purse on our table as a centerpiece. It was so pretty! The best part is that within five minutes, a customer walked past our table and told me that my purse made the perfect centerpiece! And it did! It really did! I LOVE my colorful gem purse. While visiting Old Town San Diego I came across Johnson House. It caught my eye right away and I knew I was going to be surpised by what they had to offer. I was right. As soon as you walk in the door your taken back in time as you walk through the isle and see all the baeutiful thtings they have displayed. The feel is from another era, victorian, vintage, and some items I remember from my childhood. They had some newer items which blended in well with their displays. I coulkd have been in here for hours just looking at all the great items they had displayed throughout thier store. They had clothing, jewelry, hats, lace & crochet gloves, purses, scarves, and nick-nacks from a time gone by. Jewelry was eye catching. Thre were so many pieces I wanted to purshase, but, I knew I had to controll the erge, lol. I found a magnafying necklace and it was one of the itms i purchased. I loved the simplicity of it and the function too, because lets face it, sometimes you need a little help to see things clearly. This was a good purshase being its nice to look at and nice for looking at things more clearly. Bells, Bells, & Bells. I found a tray full of silver bells. Unique silver bells and each one diffrent, perfect for a tea party. I chose one with a flower on top. Its going to look great at out tea party. What is it about vintage nostalgia that attracts us? I think our innate curiosity for how humans lived in the generations before us could be part of it. Regardless of the "why" I am often drawn to old-timey things and enjoy imagining who would have worn a particular item or what interesting stories could be told about a small house that has been preserved and on display for people to visit. The Johnson House is just what I'd picture when I think of a space that is preserving a moment in time....along with all the trinkets and accessories to accompany those memories. The first thing I noticed when I walked in the door is the smell-it smells very much like what I'd imagine a proper lady back a hundred plus years ago to smell like...similar to a very old grandma today. Overpowering floral, powder and perfume. (I actually love it and wish I could get away with smelling like that today, but I'm sure people's sensitive noses would not like me much.) Everywhere you look inside the small house is a relic from yesteryear. It's not a place to take small children and it's probably not going to have a souvenir you can purchase that most everyone will appreciate. But, for a very particular person, you may just find the treasure they will love. read more

I am a huge fan of the Victorian era so when I find places like this (very rare) I go a little batty. I was visiting SD and staying in Old Town. I had never been into this shop before so when I wondered in, I was beyond thrilled!! Everything was so beautiful and there are a TON of different nick knacks to browse. I ended up going back the next day for a lace parasol and an adorable frame that I couldn't take my mind off of. After lunch in Old Town, I went window shopping and ended up here. It was a beautiful day, love looking at Victorian stuff...found a great old photo and went to purchase it and the lady who works there was SO busy looking for a hook (back turned to me) for a hat to hang on the wall. I guess it was SO much more important that letting me know she knew I was behind her waiting with my money in my hand eager to give it to her so I could leave ! I finally said something to her - "I will be right with you"....in a very rude manner. (like I was interrupting her time). She then yelled at some other folks that came in with kid's"The store isn't child proof"....so they instantly got annoyed and left...TRUST ME there isn't anything in that store that's worth chasing potential buyers away. "Made in china" most everything. Then she made a comment to me "such different times now" really lady??? people shopping with their kids in a TOURIST area, families on vacation, day off etc. I was even more annoyed because she actually thought I would side with her. So I threw it right back at her and I asked where she was from, because it was obvious she was not a native San Diegan..."Yes, I'm from New York" where are you from...well, I'm from here, born and raised. So she comes all the way from NY with a piece of turd in stead of a slice of the big apple to beautiful sunny San Diego to WORK in a very TOURIST area and chases customers away. Its literally overflowing with millinery supplies, hats, lace gloves, fans, jewels, purses, etc etc etc. They're a tiny bit pricey, but its quality and its rare. This store is cool. I'm such a cheesy tourist sometimes. It's embarrassing to admit. But Johnson House has fairly reasonable prices for trinkets and accessories for any girl that likes unique stuff. They have a pretty extensive selection of jewelry. I was fortunate to find some really unique clip-on earrings for 4.95 a pair, 3 pairs for 9.95 which is a pretty good deal. They also have some really cute hair comb pins, pill boxes, fans, hair pins, scarves, hats, bonnets, brooches, pretty much every accessory you can think of. They carry those bag/purse hook things that are a huge fad right now for 7.95 many different styles, it's hard to find it in stores at a reasonable price. The lady that works there enjoys working there, talks to people in the store, no pressure to buy anything, knows the products that are being sold, and is fully in old town costume!! So sweet. They also have displayed in the store some old time period dresses that you can take pictures of. Cute and good quality touristy stuff that I can buy and I don't feel like I'm getting ripped off! What a nifty shop! I kind of found Old Town San Diego a little hokey overall, but this place is a gem. A bit pricey-- be forewarned. Beautiful hats, clothing, and jewelry. A little cramped, but in a fun way. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. I got a beautiful hat for my friends' wedding here. They gave us 10% off since there was a minor defect on it. Only downside is that some of the jewelry here isn't the *best* quality-- my mom got some $40 earrings and one of the gems fell out on the second time she wore them. :( read more

I am so glad I found this store! I was in desperate need for some last minute items to complete 2 different steampunk/ victorian era costumes and was amazed with the selection. I found everything I needed and ended up buying even more. The selection from clothing, jewelry and accessories is wonderful and. The prices are mind blowing. For anyone that's involved in professional costume design, reenactment, era cosplay, etc,then you know how expensive it can be. This store however, will provide you with anything you need and won't break the bank. I was able to buy lots of beautiful feathers, vintage victorian hat netting, lace gloves, high quality top hat, and fantastic vintage mourning broaches here. The store keeper gave wonderful service as we'll and is clearly very knowledgable. I live far from the store, but will go out of my way to stop by as often as possible. I have been coming here with my family since I was 10. I didn't see the sign at the front that said no photos while checking out the hats. The lady that told me told me with the rudest way and the rudest face. I was not only hurt bc it's a childhood memory. I told her "ok sorry I've been coming here since I was 10 and never had a problem before" she told me that she has worked here for 8 years and then kicked me out. This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE STORE! I could have spent hours in this store looking through their vintage trinkets and fabulous clothes and accessories. Anything related to vintage from a time long forgotten, its probably here in this store. Vintage vintage vintage! I felt like i was stepping back in time. Victorian, great gatsby, breakfast at Tiffany's... the finery in this store is unmistakably a hidden gem of San Diego. The proprietor is very easy going and helpful and always available to assist and answer questions. I fell madly in love with a vintage truly one of a kind hat, but since I was traveling didn't buy it while visiting San Diego. Later i called the shop and they still had it and had it shipped to me. Have been coming here for several years, but the last 2 years have been disappointing enough that I may have had my final visit. It seems that they have either changed buyers or purposely refocused their merchandising. I used to see half a dozen products I wanted to buy in my 1st lap around the store, now I don't see anything after a couple of rounds. It doesn't help that Rachel no longer works there either. She was very engaging and helpful - a reason to visit in herself. During my last visit, not once in my 2 laps around the store did the older woman with glasses behind the counter or the younger gal organizing scarfs even bother to look up and acknowledge my presence. If they had, I would've asked (and bought) what I was looking for, but I just left since I didn't see it on my own. Very few actual vintage pieces. The clothes rack was mostly full of overpriced clothes easily found at Macy's. I was interested in the historical clothes worn by the ladies working in the store and wanted to ask if they had dress patterns; they barely acknowledged me and seemed very unapproachable. You'll have better luck finding most of the things in there at a much better price on eBay. read more

I visited the Johnson House recently with my girlfriend. Prior to entering the establishment my girlfriend prepared me for the visit. She told me of the beautiful garb and trinkets from the 1800's that would be featured within, she also warned me of the very rude woman who runs the store. Immediately upon entering I saw evidence of both. Beautiful dresses, vests, hairpins, jewelry, hats. All very nice quality and not something you will find just anywhere. There was also a family in there looking at the wears (Mother, father, and a daughter). The daughter, a young girl 7 or 8 years old, was very excited by the different dresses etc. She was very loud about showing her approval and pointing out everything to her mom. The woman who runs the store in a very rude manner requested that the mother control her daughter. Not an outrageous request, but the way it was done was very poor. The family left immediately. Me and my girlfriend walked in. We looked at hats mostly. At one point my girlfriend decided to take a picture of an item in the shop--the picture was to be sent to my girlfriend's sister who, requested that we get her something pretty. we hoped that she would look at the picture and verify if it was "pretty". The lady in the shop asked if we had just taken a picture of something. My girlfriend said that we had. The lady at the shop informed us that we should have asked if we could take a picture first. My girlfriend apologized and said that she hadn't thought of it. The lady informed my girlfriend that that was rude, and that in the future it would be nice ask first. My girlfriend apologized again and we left. If you like to dress up in period wear this would be a great place to start. Nice selection of stuff. If you like courteous staff... or simply people who aren't patently rude, go elsewhere. read more

Most of us work for living, and some of us work hard, so why make it even harder for this Lady, who at her age must work, and day in, day out, put up with all kinds of looky loos browsing in groups, tuching everything exposed, and then just walking out without even saying thank you. I used to live in San Diego and would go here to buy the same bay rum after shave that my grandfather used for years. It's a special connection to my past and seems to be getting harder to find. Anyway, when I moved away I wasn't able to find it and contacted the Johnson House to see if they would ship me some. Long story short, they couldn't due to the alcohol in the product. Hiedi and Chanel contacted they supplier and had it sent to me from them. Both ladies went above and beyond to help me out and made it all seem so easy. THANK YOU SO MUCH! These ladies and their shop are amazing and I would recommend them HIGHLY to anyone looking for that unique item or rare, hard to find treasure. Ok so granted this store is clearly geared for the tourists, and sure there's many made in china items in the store, but it's all Victorian inspired and there is more artisan craft oriented replicas in the shop as well as this is not an antique store but a Victorian Clothing and Accessory store. You kind find full Victorian outfits here for both men and women. Surprising because the store is so small. The counter in the middle of the room with all the jewelry display cases take up much of the space in this small little room of an old house. The items there were also very expensive, but much of it high quality and tons of vintage details. It was still fun to browse the store despite bumping into other patrons, but of all the beautiful items in the store. They had an amazing selection of jewelry and accessories more so than anything else...all sorts of beautiful pieces to accessories hats, gloves, cuff links, etc.....For brides this would be a great place to find something old/new/blue as the pieces are all very classic/vintage Victorian. read more

We stopped at Johnson House and I loved the place. The people working were so nice and friendly. I ended up with an awesome Easter bonnet from there. I absolutely LOVE this little shop! I'm very into Victorian stuff so when I found this shop in Old Town, I was in heaven. They have tons of hats, mostly mens hats but they do have some womens too. They have the most beautiful cameo jewelry I have ever seen as well. Everything has a very vintage/antique inspired look to it and it's all so lovely. Apart from selling new things, they sell actual vintage tablecloths as well! I bought a pair of earrings and snood from there today and I love both items.
