I used to come here every year before Coachella music festival to get something but today I went in and was really bummed out to see their selection has gone way downhill. Tons of disco looking stuff, fancy dresses, and a few things for raves, but not the amazing selection they used to have. I'm not sure what happened, but the lady who used to run the place had the coolest selection of vests and festival wear and I don't see that anymore. The coolest vintage boutique located in the heart of North Park. I got my favorite pair of funky sunglasses here, at a great price! This boutique has a great selection of accessories, jackets, hats, and clothing for any occasion (parties, festivals, everyday). I love just looking around from time to time! Super fun little boutique with a treasure trove of stuff you won't find anywhere else. Curated collection has an emphasis on bold colors and designs and hand-sewn touches, I found. It was as if someone HUNTED and GATHERED all of Lady Gaga's styles from the mid-2000s and brought them all to one boutique in North Park. I believe the styles are more Hillcrest oriented with the crazy colors, bizarre sunglasses, and the sequins on sequins. It was kinda hilarious, time traveling to the 90s when going through the clothing racks. I think I might have seen stuff that was worn on the Fresh Prince! This place is a go-to if you ever need something to wear to a disco or a retro-themed party. I think I might buy a pair of sunglasses here before pride next year! The prices are reasonable and the selection is great! This boutique definitely stands out from the other 5 that are located in a one block radius. This is a niche store that most people probably wouldn't want to shop for daily clothes. This is more of a special event kind of clothing store where you're trying to find something special so you can peacock about in pink mirror glasses and paper mache club boots! Incredibly rude exchange with shop associate. I was inquiring whether they take vintage furs to resell (unbeknownst to me the store buys internally through 3rd party) told she was trying to 'do me a favor' by asking the store owner if they would take any of my items. She then proceeded to make me uncomfortable and told me that items weren't for sale behind the counter when I fully know that they are as I have been shopping here for 6 years. granted we got off the wrong foot, tried to salvage the exchange and asked her name and she wouldn't tell me, and instead she said 'no I won't tell me your name I hope you have a good day'. I have never had an exchange like this in a vintage store EVER, she needs to check her attitude at the door and knows that the customer always comes first. read more

Popped in here while wandering around the North Park Festival of Arts. Super cute stuff at amazing prices. I mean, super legit pricing, people. I generally stay away from boutique thrift stores because they charge way too much for stuff I could find for myself at Goodwill if I simply took the time, but the pricing at Hunt & Gather was right on point for quality used items. I was drooling over the sunglasses (only $15!) and an adorable eyeball bracelet (only $22!), but alas left empty-handed because I couldn't justify either purchase and I'm trying to be more responsible with my money and blah blah blah blah. I think the selection here is okay, but the pricing is kinda steep. However, note that I don't really shop for used, retro clothes (which is what they mostly carry). There's a couple of good deals; I got a ribbed tank for only $5.99 (with their logo on it), but I can probably find the same kind of tank at Wet Seal for $2-3. There are some handmade clothes and accessories, but those are pretty expensive as well. Customer service is decent, although I think they're used to getting a bunch of looky-loos who don't buy anything (myself included). If you're into thrift shopping and retro clothes (think 60s/70s/80s)...then try this place out. For myself, I'd rather get knockoff/retro-inspired clothes that are brand new. read more

Love this spot! I was here several weeks ago and had this store on my list of places to check out for quite a while. I forget the name of the taller blonde working that day, but she was super friendly and talked with my boyfriend and I for our entire visit, making it a wonderful and personal experience, one where I wasn't feeling pestered or being watched over, either. I wouldn't call this a traditional thrift shop in the sense that the prices are not dirt cheap, but for what you get, it is a great value. These pieces are very unique, very trendy and stylish, and not made of any crappy cheap materials. This is where you would go to find your next favorite statement pieces for whatever fun adventure you have planned. Think burner style, plus hippie style, plus 90's style, plus disco & vintage thrift shop all wrapped into one. Truly a special spot! The prices aren't ridiculous either. Depending on your means, you could still have a bit of a shopping spree here, but nothing on the scale of a regular donation-based thrift store. Well, I'm gonna have to give in and hook these guys up with another glorious 5-star review. I've actually been sitting on this review for a bit. Been waiting to jot it down until I've had a few chances to swoop in and check it out, as boutiques can be as unpredictable as an adolescent female with daddy issues. The previous boutique that called these walls home was Neighbourhood, and while I liked their selection, everything was SO expensive. I mean, I love supporting local, independent retailers... but why on earth would I spend $80 on a suit vest (like the ones all the cool kids wear these days), when I can rip into any thrift store within spitting distance and get the same thing for $5? I don't care who the designer is... I just don't have that kind of scratch lying around. If I have a good month with a surplus, sure. But these days, I don't know anyone who could afford that kind of lifestyle. Obviously it sucks to see a business go under, but with the demise of Neighbourhood comes a new venture: Hunt & Gather. Right off the bat, I knew this place was going to kick ass. Super friendly staff (not sure if it's a married couple that runs the place, but it's been the same two folks in there every time I've stepped in), great selection (clothing, jewelery, bags, glasses and more)... and best of all, reasonable prices! Halle-friggin'-lujah! I picked up a wacky shirt from a local designer for $10, some nifty shades for $8, and a murse for $40. No joke, I saw the same man-purse in another boutique recently, and it was going for $75. So that outta tell you something there. I guess some fuckwad recently threw a rock through the front door and swiped a bunch of clothes from the men's section, so they might be lacking in that department for a little bit. Seemed like they were getting a nice inventory back together, so I doubt it'll set them back too much. If you're sick of the pretentious nature of other local boutiques, I recommend you poke around Hunt & Gather. If a degenerate like myself can find and afford cool stuff here, I can only imagine you can too. read more

I can see why people like this place, with its cool, hip environment and all. The thing that really bugs me is that as I looked through the rack, I saw a shirt that was pretty cute. I checked the price tag and it said $48...and then I checked the brand, and it was Forever 21. Forever 21?!?! That shirt probably cost at most $24 at Forever 21 and here they are selling it used for $48. And all of a sudden, I saw through the facade of the store and its hip feel. Then I saw a bag for sale that I had seen before at Target...(Yes, I'm one of those people who window shops so much that I know where many people's clothes come from.) Anyway, the bag was also being sold at Hunt & Gather for a lot more than it was sold at Target. I guess it's a great store if you don't want to go digging through other random stores for that vintage kind of feel because it's all there for you, but for me personally, I'd rather find those pieces on my own for a better price. read more

My shopping style can be easily described as scan and attack. I skim, and if I don't see anything at first glance, I'm done. Hunt & Gather is the kind of store that encourages the exact opposite approach. Accessories, shoes, men and women's clothing as well as random art and vinyl are scattered about, women's items on the left and men's on the right, with a table in the center showcasing some key items. The handcrafted stone rings (made from one solid piece!) and the recycled / reworked vintage necklaces and earrings are tucked in among the clothing displays, little stands and trays filled with surprising treasures just asking to be found. I hate shopping unless it's a store like this. Every rack has a possibility of finding "the shirt." You know...that feel good, go-to shirt when times are tough and you're feeling down. Hunt & Gather is a small store that makes it pretty easy to find it with a ratio of about 4 cool threads to 1 eye sore. They may jack up the price a little as compared to some thrift stores, but you won't spend hours searching and it doesn't smell like your grandmothers attic. Also they have lots of vinyl so if you dig the smooth sounds of an old record it's definitely worth popping in for a little look see. read more

Hunt & Gather is an indie boutique in University Heights that seemed to have quite the miss with me. I'm always up for different places to get clothes from and support local places, but it's quite difficult to do so when the average cost of everything I picked up was 80 bucks. Are we being serious? 80 bucks for an owl ring?! Jeez-la-weeez! Some of their stuff looked like they went to Goodwill the previous morning, bought the scratchiest stuff they could find, and marked it up to a Nordstrom price. The staff was very quiet, but still friendly, a plus. The men's selection looked just as good as the women's and cost just as much. There is also a record collection up for sale to thumb through. I came here with my boyfriend a few months back, that was the first and last time for me. It caught my eye driving down University with my bf, they had a bunch of bins and racks of clothes in front of the store- so I gave it a chance. Everything is way overpriced. After the first ten minutes of being there I quickly got bored. I began looking at the price tags as a source of laughter while my bf looked at the records. Nothing too special here- I could find the same things at any thrift store- for way less. The price tags included words on them like "Vintage" and "Designer"- I feel like this was done as a way to jack up the prices and get away with it and fool the customers. This is rich hipster heaven with a shitty record collection. Seriously don't waste your time here. If you're a true thrift store enthusiast then you wouldn't mind digging for your "vintage" finds elsewhere instead of someone placing them in front of you and multiplying the price by 10. I was out with a boyfriend last night walking around in North Park after attending the production of "Fiddler on the Roof" at the North Park Theatre. We just by chance strolled into the store. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had moved to a location that would attract a much bigger following. The merchandise is very cool, it is in really good condition and you will get a lot for your money. Some vintage stuff you will not find anywhere else. The store is ultra modern, no moth ball smell goin' on. Come in and spend some quality time there as you allow your powers of intuition to emerge. You may be pleasantly surprised by what surfaces from the layers of clothes folded on the shelves and the racks where our memories are imprinted on garments suspended in time. This is not just a place to find clothing to add to your wardrobe, this is a shop that can help to cultivate a style that is all your own. I liked this place when it was Neighbourhood and I love love love it now that it's Hunt & Gather. Store owners Zöe & Lee know good style when they see it and this fact is clearly evidenced by the heaps of quality thread they have hanging from their racks. The vibe you get from the place as soon as you walk in is unmistakable and centers around the stellar beats Lee is bumping out of his speakers. (In certain circles Mr. Lee is better known as Dr. Indulgent--look him up if you like to shake your booty!) I don't know about you, but I always need a good beat if I'm going to be trading cash for clothes. And it never seems like you have to trade large amounts of cash for a decent pile of duds in this place. Just today I bought an awesome western-style shirt for a paltry sum--thanks, Zöe, for the suggestion! I'm looking forward to wearing it to the Radio Room later this evening. I'm hoping to see more guys jeans at Hunt & Gather in the near future because I know whatever they might carry would fit my style to a "t". Amazing selection and decent prices (not cheap by any means, but...). When something is really unique or interesting, though, you know it's going to be expensive. But a lot of shoes and purses are $20-30... Dresses I looked at were $30-40. Of course, I fell in love with the most expensive pair of shoes in the place, but whatcha gonna do? The owners are friendly and welcoming, and like I said before, the selection is pretty impeccable, really interesting. It could be pretty dangerous to frequent here, but I'll have to make sure to keep it in my mind when I have some extra cash to spend on unique and fun pieces. read more

This store is a breath of fresh (vintage-y hip) air in an overly hip part of town! I frequent many secondhand, vintage stores within the Uni Heights, Hillcrest, North Park area, and this store is very unique and seems to hold its own style! The jewelry is amazing and one of a kind. It was also a great mix of slightly more pricey consignment jewelry & affordable cute jewelry. The clothes, with all secondhand/vintage stores, and boutiques in general, are hit or miss. Many things that I see and love often are not in my size. They had a nice array of sizes and carried many nice silk blouses. I did not see anything that I thought was overpriced, and actually ended up finding a super cute small purse here. I recommend this store to all! I find myself making excuses to walk the dog near this store, so I can take a peek inside. They have some very unique items in here, both clothing and jewelry, and it is reasonably priced. I always end up buying something, only during one visit did I not find something I absolutely had to have. I did buy some earrings that immediately fell apart but the owner was very nice to take them back with a full return - something she didn't really want to do and something small boutiques usually never do. But I promised to spend the $60-something dollars here on something else. Spending money here is easy to do. So if you really are trying to not buy things, either don't go here or leave your wallet at home. Problem solved. Now it's back to hunting and gathering....... read more
