We recently moved from Santa Fe to Tucson using the services of this company. While our moving coordinator was a very nice gentlemen with lots of experience, he wasn't responsive to our inquiries during the period from signing the contract to packing/loading, particularly concerning zeroing in on a "delivery" window so that we could make temporary housing arrangements in Tucson (particularly an issue because we were traveling with 2 dogs . . . .), and didn't make any attempt to make sure we understood what a "binding" quote meant or what "packing" meant, with the result in both cases that we did a number of things we really didn't need to do. The company did request at the last minute that we shift the loading date several days so that it wouldn't have to unload, hold, and reload everything, to which we agreed, as the driver was delayed. However, had we known that "packing" did not include disturbing our beds and bedding - in other words, we could have stayed in our home between "packing" and "loading" - we did have a VRBO we reserved, paid for and didn't use for several nights and were "out" about $1,000 for that. But had "packing" and "loading" been on the original schedule, it would have only been 1 night of unnecessary VRBO expense. The fellow who packed was efficient and thorough, though he used an enormous amount of packing paper that seemed really unnecessary. On the other hand, nothing was broken in the move except a Kenmore upright vacuum, which wasn't packed but was "loose" in the van, which no longer stands upright. Since it was heavy, my wife didn't want to go through the hassle of a claim, we just replaced it. The driver and his crew who loaded did an excellent job. Very professional, efficient, and personable. Equally so, the crew he engaged for unloading. They were careful to put everything where we wanted it to go and absolutely nothing was damaged in the process.\ Haven't moved in 20 years, and did much of the last one ourselves. So we really aren't in much of a position to evaluate the performance of this company versus other options. I'd just say an average but overall satisfactory job. read more

They seem to start out great but certainly fall on their face. They moved me from Santa Fe to Arizona holding in storage about 60% of my belongings. When everything was finally delivered it was a disaster. They broke countess items. Leg on couch broken, antique armoire crown destroyed, broken lamps, lamp shades destroyed, dents in my dining room table, broken antique vessels, dining chair legs gouged and I could go on. Seems they hire contract labor, not employees to deliver and unload truck. No supervision, no head foreman. The truck driver just sat in the truck for 8 hours. They also make it impossible to make an insurance claim and they charge you for the insurance. They take NO responsibility and make everything your problem. STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!! read more

Horrible, and they evidently employ literal criminals. Part of United Van Lines, and Wehrley Moving of Duluth, MN where I left earned a 5 star review. These guys screwed it up, badly, just as Robert L. reports below, 3 of 5 furniture items damaged, floor lamps and a nightstand, over $200. The lead guy was deeply insulting and hostile toward me almost from the start. He called me "Boss" in an obsequious way (which I never asked for) and every time I asked him a simple question as we tallied boxes delivered he got angry, paranoid, accused me of "not trusting" them adequately. I'm a retired High School Teacher and Librarian, I have a very large Library and as they unloaded he seemed to be highly insulted that I read. They rushed out without assembling one of the lamps that was ruined (which might be why it was ruined). I only asked them to move one large piece of furniture, my Queen sized bed with an adjustable frame (head and foot can be raised). He literally argued with me about where I wanted to put the bed in the small single bedroom as if he knew what worked in my new apartment better than me!! Bizarre! But here's the capper, the real injury-- 9 items from the Inventory were never delivered, and I soon discovered unpacking that several valuable books which I knew were properly loaded in Minnesota simply "disappeared"!! Now, some items didn't have tags (the damaged nightstand, e.g.), so my best guess now is that 3-4 boxes were simply disappeared, thrown out or maybe stolen and sold (?) The first book I noticed missing was oversized, 12.5 inches high and cost $89 new, an Art book by a favorite artist, Peter Milligan. Something that size doesn't just evaporate into thin air. a very expensive old book by Manly P. Hall worth at least $250 gone too, and some smaller items. My claim about the ruined furniture will seemingly be compensated by United Van Lines (which I appreciate) but since probably 4 boxes of books either got thrown out or stolen, I anticipate a difficult time documenting and getting compensated for the missing items. I want to continue to use United because my experience in Duluth was so good, but I will not allow Johnson to touch anything of mine after this experience. (And I plan to move to Mexico, with my library, in February.) Steer clear of this crew or like me, you will likely regret monetary damages. read more

This company was awful. Either boxes were packed with so much paper and 1 small thing, or items were dumped in a box and taped closed. The packers asked me about every item if I wanted it packed after I had told them yes. The first statement was "hi were here to pack your stuff just get out of our way because we're trying to get done as soon as possible". 2 days later when they were forced to send someone to pickup my stuff we continually found things still in cabinets and drawers they didn't pack. Awful! The moving crew was nice and helpful. When I called to talk to management about the timeline for pickup, the man I spoke to was extremely rude. If I was desperate I wouldn't pick these guys. One bad apple ruins it for all of them? No there was only 1 or 2 out of the whole bunch that was good My favorite part is they were too lazy to throw away there trash while they packed. This is not a company that I would recommend. When I found that items were missing and contacted them their response was: "You signed for the receipt of items and we can not help you." Yet they made it impossible to know what was missing by demanding I sign the receipt on the spot. I was supposed to know intuitively what was missing from 20+ boxes and a house full of furniture? I am 76 and have moved several times with no problems. If you value your possessions, I suggest you stay clear of these guys. read more

I would highly recommend this company to anyone moving locally. It's always a roll of the dice to choose a moving company without a referral but this time I lucked out and got a great moving company! Called these guys from the yellow pages for our move from Santa Fe to Los Alamos. They were quick to get a quote and were working the Friday before Memorial Day (which apparently is a popular day for moving companies to close). Total cost of move $1134 for about 150 boxes (3 BR, 8500#) . So bad news first, they said they'd be there at 8am but didn't show til 8:45 -since I was READY at 8 am, I was sitting around a fully packed house cooling my heels on a day I'd rather not. Hence the 4 instead of 5 stars 'cause otherwise I couldn't have asked for a better team to move us. They made up the time easily so it wasn't a big deal in the end. They sent three guys, which was great in helping speed things up. They were efficient in detailing what would happen and how long it would take. They were professional and carefully wrapped the items I had concerns about (in particular a teak cabinet that has sentimental value and weighs about 2,000 lbs). They had experience moving items like pictures and advised us accordingly. Then they managed to pack up the entire house 4.5 hours, an amazing feat! Seriously, we just did this 6 months ago and it took 2 more hours last time. At the new house, they put together beds, cribs, tables and unpacked everything quickly. The entire time the team was cheerful and hardworking, with just two quick breaks to fuel up. It made it very easy to tip them and wish them a good long weekend, they earned it! Update to my update-my container was delivered yesterday and low and behold- inside one of the crates was empty liquid nail calking tubes used to make/ seal the crates- That's funny I REALLY do not remember that being in the inventory sheet! Slime buckets! Oops so sorry! That is just down right unprofessional! A horrible experience from start to finish. They literally throw things in boxes if you need them to help you pack, put boxes in the wrong rooms of your new home, don't listen to where you want furniture placed. I went out to my garage after they rushed me to sign paperwork and left and found a lamp with the base in pieces hidden in a dark corner. I was told I'd be compensated for it but was not. The cost of the lamp doesn't even matter to me as much as that they broke it and tried to hide it. The sales coordinator is the only professional one but he told me they would help with things they wouldn't. Following a 10 year relationship (literally) with Johnson Moving and Storage for home furnishing storage in Santa Fe while I was working overseas, I was able to finally have my belongings moved to a new home in Phoenix, Arizona. The team I worked with for storage all these years were great, and the individual I worked with to coordinate the moving/delivery of everything to Arizona was the same person who helped me 10 years ago. That says something about stability and loyalty of their employees! I had a specific date in mind for delivery, which they actually beat by 3 days, as they made my delivery a priority in their route. The truck driver was the same person who packed my items from the storage facility and I could see when they opened the doors that they took great care in the placement and protection of the furnishings. With two persons unloading and asking me to verify the inventory as it came off the truck, the job went fairly quickly. Very pleasant, communicative, respectful, and helpful throughout the entire process. Nothing lost, stolen or broken! I would recommend this company for any of their services. read more

I used Johnson Movers to do a live unload of a container I had shipped from Hawaii. Diana, the person for "international" moves (Hawaii counts as international in the moving world), was very helpful and responsive to emails and phone calls. She was able to schedule my unload on short notice the only day the truck could arrive, and she was very patient as I had to make multiple phone calls between the two companies to have it work out. The movers showed up early (I can't say that for the trucker -- he showed up 2.5 hours late). They were friendly, professional, and VERY patient since they had to wait 4.5 hours for the trucker to come. They didn't unpack much because I asked them not to in order to save my money (they were on an hourly basis). They put together most of the furniture, and in order to expedite it somewhat, I helped move stuff out of the truck to the house. If I have to move again (Oh, I hope not), I'll definitely give them a call again. read more

This company was selected by my husband's employer and they were not professional. Items have grease stains all over them and are damaged. I am in the process of filing a complaint with United, LANL HR. Several items were disassembled after they left my home in Chicago and had to be reassembled here. They were done incorrectly or not at all and now I am missing NUMEROUS parts. The movers were arguing with me about where they were disassembled and tried to blame everyone else. Additionally, many items were no checked on their BINGO card and so the movers took it upon themselves to supposedly check for them. However, I am now left with missing items and no easy way to reconcile. They told my two year old so he had an attitude and were rude to me when I asked them to be extra careful with our bed frame, which is scratched. They were very hurried and seemed more interested in leaving than completing the job. Lorrie was horrible to work with and required many inquiries to get answers and some were never gotten. I would never hire these people. Would rather handle myself. read more

DO NOT use this company! Johnson moving was impossible to reach to schedule. Numerous messages were left and it was like pulling teeth to get a response. We went with them because they gave us the most reasonable quote, but it turns out you get what you pay for. They would not give us an exact time they would arrive on moving day, but promised they would call the day before. On the day before, no one called, and I ended up leaving multiple messages with no response. It is now the day of the move and we still have no idea if or when they are coming. I am calling every 30 minutes but keep getting transferred to voicemail and nobody at the company seems to know anything. As we sit here wasting our whole day, I can only hope that I will one day get to live in an apartment with furnishings. read more

Having lived in Santa Fe for only a year, my better half and I don't quite know who to trust with service recommendations and the like, and online sites like Yelp seem a little "content anemic" when compared to the Boston area where we used to live. So when it came time to do an in-town move, we were anxious about choosing a mover. On one hand, moving businesses are notorious for scams, theft, and damage; on the other hand, it seems like the reviews you find online are skewed towards the (presumably minority of) people who had the worst experiences. Whether it was good research or just good luck, we just about couldn't have been happier with Johnson Southwest. Tom Springer (the owner, I believe), came to our old house to survey our stuff, after which he took out a mobile printer and gave us a binding estimate (our request) on the spot. We got estimates from three companies, from Johnson, Wilson, and Mountain, and Johnson's price was the middle of the three, just south of $900 for a 2BR, 60 boxes, 4 miles between houses, and full insurance with no deductible. On moving day, the movers (employees, not contract) were just a dash late from a previous appointment, but they called ahead to let us know, so no worries. They were clean-cut, in uniform, friendly, professional, and most important, careful and efficient. They were good about asking the right questions (Are the shelves in the glass cabinet fixed or detachable? Do the shades detach from the lamps? Do any pieces stay in the old house?). They were also diligent but courteous about pointing out any pre-existing scratches and dings on the furniture. Everything arrived on the other end intact and with no unpleasant surprises. All was done on the up-and-up, with none of the horror scenarios you read about with weight scams, damage, or theft. My only quibble was pre-move communication, when trying to lock in a move date. We emailed and called a few times, and it took a few business days for anyone to get back to us. That said, we were in the planning stage during a holiday weekend, and when all was said and done, we got our top choice for a moving day, so I think they generally deserve the benefit of the doubt. Having worked with Gentle Giant to move from Boston to Santa Fe, they'll always be my gold standard for the industry (alas, no office in the Southwest). But Johnson Southwest is a really impressive runner up. I'd recommend them to anyone. read more

I had a high end monitor and it was in perfect condition. Never touched after it was sitting on my desk new from box. After the move the monitor had scratches and grooves all over the screen. The claim got denied because "scratches were normal wear and tear pre move". It was a total underhanded response to deny a claim. Don't use this company. If anything happens to your stuff the extra insurance means absolutely nothing and I'm stuck with a worthless monitor that I will have to replace. Avoid at all costs! read more

Emailed this company just 3 days before I left NY. It's amazing that they got everything arranged for me in such a short period. I left all my stuff in my friend's house and they picked it up there. Insurance was purchased but not for value only by pound so got a minimal amount to fix it. Which it can't be. They should have offered to replace the piece. Don't use these guys! read more

The worst moving company I have ever used! We arranged a move through a major moving company. Because I was moving across country, the mover recommended Johnson Storage & Movers in Santa Fe for the first part of the move. We called the manager several times and he finally called us back. He gave us an estimate that included extra charges for several antique pieces that needed extra care. On the day of the move, the crew arrived late. They were unprofessional. They didn't wrap a single piece of furnuture. When questioned, we were told the furniture would be wrapped before being placed on the larger cross-country truck (which was a lie). I did a walk-through after the crew left and found one of my upstairs bathrooms trashed, with urine on the floor, bathtub and wall near toilet. The sink was covered in black muck and the new white towels (left for the person buying our house, at their request) were completely stained black.). It was disgusting and, if so hadn't checked the rooms and caught it, I imagine the sale of the house might have fallen through). The crew also dumped out their old coffee onto our porch - instead of throwing it over the railing. I have no idea why anyone would treat someone front porch as a trash can or dumping ground. The movers from the national company told us that when they picked up our furniture to load on the cross-country truck, nothing was wrapped and the damage (a 3' gash across the top of the coffee table, doors broken off large A/V cabinet, etc.) has already been done. We also had items go missing and, according to the national crew, were not there when they picked up our items from Johnson Storage. The worst! They did not wrap anything - even when we paid extra to have particular items wrapped. We tipped our 3 movers $100 each with the hope that they would take some care with our belongings. Instead, everything was scratched or broken. Plus, they used our bathroom upstairs when finished and trashed it - urine on the walls and tub, water and dirt all over the sink, floor and mirrors. Some of our items even went "missing" from the move. United Van Lines uses this company for local moves, and they should not trust the crew in Santa Fe. We used Johnson Storage and Moving to move locally. They sent one representative to do an estimate for our apartment, who was polite and thorough. The estimate was 12% too low, which I thought was reasonable based on other moves I've been through. We had everything in boxes except the furniture. They took apart our bed frame and then reassembled it. They put a few blankets over our furniture, but didn't package anything with tape or anything. We had everything in boxes. They worked from 8:30 to 2:30 and sent 3 men with one truck. They made two trips with the truck between apartments. Nothing was broken and the movers were professional. read more

I have to say that it was a stress free move for us. The movers (I apologize I lost the sheet of paper that had their names) were excellent and ensured that we were taken care of. They worked very hard (even cleaned my storage space after the goods were taken) and went above and beyond. The goods had to be picked up from 2 different place and delivered to our place. There was not a single scratch to our furniture or any other items ! I wish I had the names of all the movers but wanted to ensure that their work was acknowledged. I will most definitely recommend Johnson moving to anyone that needs moving services. I have moved a number of times in my career and can safely say that this was by far the best move I have experienced. read more

Johnson Storage and Moving was horrible. They were selected by the company my husband works for to relocate us from Houston to New Mexico. The group that packed us out tore up brand new wood floors in the house we were trying to sell (they then refused to pay the claim for those floors). After arrival of our goods, we found many things (several irreplaceable) had been damaged (destroyed pictures, art that never arrived, etc.). Several of the damaged (in some cases completely destroyed) items were noted upon delivery (while the delivery guys were still unpacking, we made notes on the shipping paperwork that the items had arrived damaged - the movers signed it, and so did we). Johnson Storage and Moving have denied the claim stating that because we disposed of the items that they will not replace them because they cannot determine that the damage/destruction was a result of their activity (this has been a months-long process, and of course we are not going to hold onto items that are destroyed, and their own movers signed the paperwork indicating that the items had *arrived* damaged or destroyed, and we took pictures of damaged items as they were coming off the truck). On a final note: Do *not* leave your children alone with their movers. One of the movers that packed us out repeatedly made sexual suggestions regarding our 3 and 4 year old daughters. read more

n July 2016, I moved a household of belongings from Santa Fe, NM to Albany, NY. I stored them in a Johnson Moving and Storage facility in Santa Fe for 2.5 years while getting settled on the east coast. I paid for full replacement value insurance every month for that period of time. I was assured that my belongings were stored in a climate controlled, clean environment. When my belongings arrived, everything I owned, from the 2 sofas, mattress, clothing and even the newsprint all my fragile items were wrapped in smelled strongly of must and spoiled milk. Everything needed to be cleaned multiple times, but the smell would not come out of the upholstered items. As soon as things were unpacked, I had to immediately remove the packing paper and boxes from the house because the smell was so strong and awful. I submitted a claim and an adjuster arrived promptly. In a follow-up call with the adjuster, he told me that he had supported full replacement for the items I had submitted. After several more months, my claim was denied by Johnson Moving and storage due to what they called "inherent vice", essentially that my 2 sofas and mattress had an inherent defect that caused them to smell so bad after "normal" storage. My only recourse was through arbitration. I consulted an attorney who advised me on a process for arbitration, including obtaining letters of support from the manufacturers of my possessions to disprove the inherent vice theory, as well as other necessary steps that would best be accomplished by an actual attorney. When I calculated the cost of the attorney plus having to travel to either NM or Colorado where Johnson headquarters are, I opted out. This is how they win every time. I paid over $1,000 for that full replacement value insurance on top of my monthly storage fee. I essentially wasted that money AND i paid them to store my belongings in a dirty, musty environment. I would NEVER recommend them - both for the carelessness of how they stored my belongings and for how they did not honor the insurance claim. I paid for 2.5 years, they damaged my belongings and I am left having to replace these items on my dime. read more

Dear Johnson, We left voice messages with no return call. We emailed Ms. Alvarado with no response. All to confirm our move and never received a response. Today, Tom Springer refused to hear anything we had to say or even acknowledge that the lead packer Tuesday the 26th said anything to us about loading on the 28th (our move coordinator was at the house and heard everything that was said). He was very rude and condescending and insulted me and my husband. In his own words during our conversation he stated 'what part of that can't you get through your head', in regards to the move date. Well, maybe your lead packer shouldn't tell us they would be here 7/28/16 (yes, paperwork said the 29th...but then he shouldn't have said the 28th, That he was personally loading the truck).
