Johnson's is that roadside place that you don't really notice until you see all of the trucks parked outside, so you get drawn in by the crowd. Once you are in though, you understand what the line is all about. This was my first visit to Johnson's, but after the experience, I will be back soon to try more of the bbq options. I will start by saying that good brisket is very, very hard to find. It is usually dry or bland, like a roast beef. Not the case. They offer juicy or dry, which I'm sure correlates to the point or flat. Incredible. I had the pork as well, and it was wonderful. I usually go for no sauce so I can taste the smoke and flavor, and it was perfect. No need to drown it in anything, like a fine steak. For sides I had the collard greens and mac n cheese. Both were wonderful as well. I really wish I lived closer so I could dive into the menu more regularly. We did the wings and onion rings as an appetizer, and everyone at the table was very happy with those. They are the giant onion rings with so much breading that you almost need to eat them with a fork. As far as service goes, everything was great. Drinks stayed full, orders were handled promptly, and everything was done accurately. The pricing was right where I felt it should be, and portion size was splendid. A vegan's worst nightmare! Buckle up, becuse this place is going to take you on a ride through flavortown and straight to the pearly gates of heaven. I almost stopped at a McDonald's when I got off I-4, but thank the good Lord I waited and found this honey hole. The parking lot was slam-packed; it looked like a Toys-R-Us on Black Friday back in the early 2000's, but I was put at ease when I walked in and saw the vast indoor and outdoor seating areas. I was immediately greeted by a lovely southern gal whose accent told me she'd spent her entire life helping her old man out on the farm, and I knew I was in for a delectable meal. Let's start with the sweet tea, because what else are you going to order at a barbeque resturaunt? The tea set the tone for the entire meal: this place was not built for those with feeble arteries. After a few sips, I was convinced the owners were friends with Billy Currington and had tracked down Miss Bell and got her recipe. I will not call it the best tea I've ever had, but it is undeniably in my top 5 and I am VERY picky about my sweet tea. Now let's get into the food. Upon opening the menu, I immediately noticed a combo meal with the description "a meal for one hungry man or two cheapstakes". There is no need to get into the day I had, but let's just say I was a VERY hungry boy. The meal was quite titanic, consisting of the following: 2 ribs, 2 smoked chicken wings, 2 other meats of my choosing, three sides, and a roll. As a man of principal, I judge barbeque largely based on the brisket. It is one of my favorite meats (second to only a ribeye), and you can bet your sweet hiney it was making this meal's roster. I paired the above with the smoked sausage, and rounded out the meal with baked beans, mac and cheese, and a sweet potato soufflé. Have you ever heard the phrase "let the meat talk"? This meat didn't just talk; it was fluent in 3 languages. The wings were tossed in their house barbeque sauce and we're packed with hickory flavor. There is no ranch needed for these bad boys! The smoked sausage was simply scrumptious, featuring notes of applewood from the smoker, not super greasy, and left your mouth drooling for more. The ribs were about as perfect as you can get. They offered the perfect bite (none of that fall off the bone garbage these TikTok folks think a rib should have). They were incredibly tender, with a smoke ring so defined you could take it and propose to your girlfriend. The brisket lives up to every hope and dream I've ever had. The flavor was unreal, and you practically didn't even have to chew because it quite literally melts in your mouth. Each bite delivered an explosion of flavor, and frankly I'm disappointed I couldn't inject it into my veins. There is no need to even discuss the sauces (which were incredible by the way). If we're talking sides, I haven't had many better than these. The baked beans set the tone with a perfect viscosity, thick enough to eat with a fork but not so thick you have to question if you're eating pudding. As far as the flavor, pure perfection, highlighting that brown sugar flavor we all know and love. The mac and cheese was to die for. I'm a sucker for some oven baked mac with a thick, cheese crust on top, and that's exactly what I got. You guys are over here talking about Chick-Fil-A Mac and cheese? That's cute; come get you some of this! Now I admittedly was a bit somber when I saw there was no garlic toast, but it was for the better as this bread was softer than charmin ultra, fluffier than your favorite pillow, and glazed with butter like Paula Deen made it herself. The sweet potato soufflé I don't even know hot to describe. Have you ever eaten a cloud? That's about the texture of this soufflé. I don't even know what a soufflé is, but this one had some candied pecans mixed in and made for the perfect night-cap to this impeccable meal. The best part? My bill for all of this was $28! I've been to barbeque restaurants where a pulled pork sandwich and a side is $20. I've never come across a better bang for your buck. I RARELY give out 5 star reviews, and while I will not say it's the best barbeque I've ever had, I have certainly not had anything better. This place was so good I'm considering asking my boss to relocate just to be closer to it. Menu was focus mainly basic smoke bbq will have which is a good sign instead of many other added too many mix and matched makes is inconsistent. Food - food was prepared by order, house made bread was amazing, brisket was cooked perfectly soft and juicy, smoke chicken was good, smoke wings also juicy, sweet bean and potato salad was excellent, their bbq sauce had great vinaigrette balance well with the sweetness. We came here by accident, noticed there were lots of cars, it was very busy. They had a sign that said bbq tacos, so we had to eat here. It's a very cute, well kept place, bathrooms were nice and clean too. I ordered the tacos, which were good, but would have been at least twice as good of the tortillas were cooked better..if they had been allowed to puff up, maybe get a little toastiness on them the tacos would have been great, but as it was they were ok. Johnson's is some of the best bbq I have had in the Hillsborough/Polk area. I love BBQ and Johnson's hits the spot. Johnson's is located in Plant City off the Alexander Street Exit. It is next door to Fred's Market. Johnson's offers both indoor and outdoor seating and you are seated by a hostess and can order from your table. Prices are reasonable and portions are large. There are so many things to try here that it will take me many visits to try it all, but so far everything we've had has been great. My friend loved her baked potato topped with bbq and served with a side of mac n cheese. I had a combo plate with brisket, pork, mac n cheese and creamed corn. Everything on my plate was delicious and it even came with a roll covered in honey butter. The brisket was definitely the standout meat. The pork was flavorful, but a little dry and much better with sauce. They have traditional, spicy, and sweet sauces to choose from. Spicy was my go to. The brisket was smoky and delicious. It did not require any sauce as it was perfectly flavorful and moist. I ordered the chopped brisket upon the recommendation of my server and that is likely what I will order upon my next visit as well because it was awesome. They have a ton side options. I chose the mac n cheese which was great and had a delicate flavor. I also chose the creamed corn which is topped with bacon crumbs. The corn was sweet, but the bacon made it savory and it was my favorite of the two sides. They also had cheese grits, but I had zero room left, but I will definitely put it on my list to try for next time. Absolutely loved this place, it's a cute little spot super easy to access from I-4, so we stopped there on our way back to Orlando from Tampa. There was no wait on a Saturday night around six, so we walked right in and immediately sat down. Our server was Cassidy and she was amazing! Super prompt, helpful answering our questions since we hadn't been there before, and quick on drink refills (Coke, not Pepsi). My fiancé ordered the potato skins for our appetizer which were good but not the best ever, needed a little more spice and a little more crisp. For entrees he got the fried chicken and I got ribs, both spectacular. The rib meat was tender and went really well with the (otherwise fairly bland) bbq sauce. I got green beans and mac and cheese for my sides, both above average, my fiancé got creamed corn. The creamed corn was SO YUMMY, especially all the bacon on the top! Complimentary with each entree you get a dinner roll, which is slathered in a mixture of butter, honey and BROWN SUGAR. Needless to say, we immediately got an order of these to go.
