Not very empathetic. I called to have my cat put down and they were quick to pass me off somewhere else.

I had a very disappointing experience with this veterinary office. I called to ask a few questions…read moreabout services, and the person on the phone spoke to me in a very rude tone. When I politely tried to ask another question, they simply hung up on me.

I brought my kitten in to Quality Care Animal Hospital, (Phone: (919) 963-3044; Address: 5941 U.S…read more Hwy 301 S, Four Oaks, NC 27524). I was referred by the JoCoPETS Program, (Johnston County Preventing Excess Through Sterilization), which is sponsored by the Johnston County Animal Protection League. I arrived at 8:00 am for my appointment on December 4, 2023. The office professional that greeted me at the reception desk seemed to be friendly and efficient. I had no reason to suspect that she would not meet the duty of care that she owed me, my family, and my kitten. We went over the paperwork together, and the question arose as to whether we wanted our kitten's ear "clipped". This question perplexed me, because my other two cats were spayed and neutered in Wake County. Their ears are notched to indicate that they have been spayed. This was not an option - it was done as a matter of course. I said to the office professional, "Well, we definitely do not want her ear tip to be cut off. If they are going to just make a small notch, that is okay. She stiffened and looked offended. "You don't have to do it at all since she is an indoor cat.", she said. "No, no", I said, thinking that she was upset by the implication that the office would do something so barbaric as to tip a domestic house cat's ear. "We don't mind if it is notched. Just a small notch. It's probably a good thing, so if she gets out and someone finds her they will see the notch and know she's been fixed and is a pet. But again (I said with a chuckle) we don't want her whole ear cut off. Just a little cut." She stared at me, saying nothing and marked "yes" on the form. My twelve-year-old daughter and I took her silence to mean that the office did not tip cats, and she disliked that inference. A line was formed behind me, so I hurried to sign and initial the forms. I left confident that the office professional and I had an understanding, even if my clearly communicating our wishes made her a bit uncomfortable. Again, I had no idea our trust would be breached and that she would not deliver the standard of care that a reasonable person would deliver. At no point did she say or indicate by gesture that notching was a service that Quality Care Animal Hospital refused to provide. It never crossed my mind that Quality Care Animal Hospital would not only tip our kitten's ear but would do so in such a rough fashion that the clip was ragged, making the inflicted injury even more unsightly. It defies logic that a professional would mutilate a domestic house cat in such a fashion. We are heartbroken. We trusted Quality Care Animal Hospital with a spay procedure that resulted in the permanent mutilation of our cat. Their cruelty to a beloved domestic house cat has been astounding.
