Anyway I had previously noticed this new(ish) walk in Dr's surgery, which I thought I could use. Mostly I use the college doc but it was too far to hobble. So off I hobbled to this surgery with its odd, but actually quite convenient opening hours. The reception area is a bit off-putting. There is no receptionist... but there is CCTV and it's assumed that the waiters will organise themselves in the order in which they came into the holding area (it honestly felt more like a holding area than a waiting room). With the austere surroundings I though the doctors would not be nice, but actually the doctor I met with was really lovely and quite sympathetic to my dislocated (as it turns out) toe. The price of the visit was pretty high too, higher than my own GP by a bit. All in all the place was handy in my hobbling 'emergency' but I wouldn't like to go their regularly... it's bad enough feeling sick without going somewhere that makes you feel like you've also committed a crime. Yes, these things matter!

Several people I know in Monkstown are saying the same things as I am saying here. BMC has had a…read moremessage on the phone for several years saying they are experiencing an unusually high volume of calls - which recently changed to the Pippo message. Most of the admin staff are polite and helpful. Others are rude and approach you like they are doing you a great favour to assist or deal with you. One of my elderly friends, who was terminally ill, and who had been going there for years told me that his doctor was very rude to him, which surprised me as he used to sing her praises. The doctors always seem under pressure and never know your history without scrolling up and down their computer while they talk or "listen" to you. With one doctor, when I started to explain symptoms, he told me several times, that I only had 15 minutes and in the end told me I had to prioritize which symptom I wanted to discuss with him during the appointment. Having had the experience of several occasions over the years of being left waiting for over 30 mins, I found this interesting. Sometimes I found the doctors listening skills, diagnoses and proposals for treatment very good. Other times not so good. One time, I had to go elsewhere to find out the cause of my issue so that it could be treated with the right medication.

If you're going to the doctor's in Ireland, you had better be at death's door. Because otherwise…read moreyou won't have any money left to get yourself a prescription. Of course, this is no fault of the doctors themselves (at least not individually), but at something like €70 to just walk into the office, be sure that you're genuinely ill. That being said, Beechlawn is quite a nice place. Moved from Eton Square to a purpose-built location on the Carrickbrennan Road, it's bright and fresh and airy...the polar opposite of what you feel going in there usually. The staff are pleasant and proper local physicians (they will always ask after your family, school, hobbies etc), and they're good at squeezing you in if you need an appointment asap. But if you can get away with just going to the pharmacist, it's a whole lot easier on the pocket!
