I see eveb after all these years that people are still using my review to decide on Mr. Burge's services, so I want to apologize for choosing not to follow up to his reply to my initial feedback. I was too heated to re-engage, although I'm glad to see many positive reviews since 2013 when my case was "handled." I did not immediately receive my license back as it might sound from his reply. It was not a successful endeavor. If he wants to provide details of the case since I cannot easily access the Kokua site myself, I'm not opposed. He told me at the time the administrative side would be a cakewalk and he did indeed win that portion... yay. The fact remains he had little to say, near nothing to advise me on after he received payment, and coughed to a near comical degree instead of speaking when we were before the judge who asked me twice if I was sure I wanted to proceed with Mr. Burge's recommendation. Since he would not make any time to speak with me, I didn't have a chance to report that my arresting officer offered to not show up to my trial if I'd agree to attend his daughter's play with him. So I don't really go on here to look at my past reviews, but I noticed that Mr Bulge responded. That's very interesting because when you are depending on him to handle your case or try and earn the money he charges you to save your life, it takes an act of congress to get him on the phone. Then I actually read the response to my review and this guy is so extremely unprofessional it's not even funny. You are calling me a coward for telling people the way you operate? Cmon man, that just shows what a piece of dirt you are. What kind of professional gets mad and resorts to name calling due to a bad review? I could see if I was your only bad review..... but yah......you have a bunch of unhappy customers. And what a coincidence that your go-to line is saying that I wasn't your client. Like the public is supposed to believe that now all of a sudden you didn't have the bad review people as clients? I saw that you used that line before so maybe come up with a better excuse for your incompetence. I highly recommend John for anyone accused of driving under the influence (DUI). If you're reading this, you're likely in the same situation like I was, uncertain and concerned on the ramifications of a DUI conviction. And like me you received a bunch of mail from a variety of attorneys looking to defend you, John was one of those mailers. I did some research and found John has been involved in a variety of cases that have been appealed all the way to the Hawaii Supreme Court (where he has won). Confident in my choice I reached out to John and got a prompt response. My initial meeting with John was quick and to the point. He reviewed material I had and went to work getting the necessary evidence requested from the State. To be completely clear, John is extremely busy. I've read some of the negative comments and would affirm that John can be running behind at times (due to how many clients he's defending). Heck, if you hire him you'll see he has 2-3 clients (along with you) all there to see the same judge. So expect his concentration to be split between a variety of clients... Yes, you might not win your case (hence you're hiring a lawyer to help reduce this chance of being found guilty). BUT, John is truthful about outcomes, about what he can/can't do, and will take the time to explain what's going on (be sure to ask if you're unsure). Communication was top notch, his office is fantastic at using email and/or phone calls to confirm court dates and provide reminders. This isn't a "oh I hired him so I don't have to do anything" type of situation. You own your case, stay in touch with John if you have questions or concerns and I'm sure you'll get a prompt response. For my particular case I was found not guilty by the court based on John's excellent argument that my low BAC provided enough reasonable doubt that I was not under the influence of alcohol (based on the wording within the applicable HRS). He was able to successfully argue that this in turn invalidated any charge of driving under the influence of alcohol (because I wasn't found to be under the influence of alcohol). I'm looking forward to continuing the work with his office to expunge my record of this arrest so I can move on with my life. Again, John's excellent knowledge of the law and his ability to use the available evidence on hand helped win my case. I received a letter from Jonathan Burge after a recent arrest. In his letter he said that I will be receiving more letters from other attorneys that will use scare tactics to pressure me to seeking there representation. So I decided to see him and how I would be represented. First of all he was 4 minutes late which was my first flag, (not a good first impression). Late returning calls? Late for court appearance? (not to say that would happen but first impressions are very important to me) Then he did what he said the other lawyer's would be doing in there letters, its just I got his scare tactics verbally, followed immediately by his fees. Jonathan Burge is the go to guy for a DUI. Super upfront. Cut to the chase. Honest guy who will tell you if you have a shot at winning the case or if you should just go for a plea. The main difference between him and other lawyers I've seen in the courthouse is that he's super up to date and uses an iPad to read up on all police reports and other files pertaining to the case whereas other lawyers are before the judge fumbling through a briefcase/folder full of papers. He won my license back from the drivers revocation office and got my DUI thrown out. I was pulled over without probable cause and when the police officer showed up to testify Mr Burge tore him to shreds on the witness stand. Long story short all 3 traffic violations including DUI got thrown out and I got my license back. He may be a little higher priced than other attorneys but in this case you get what you pay for. Honest, professional, and courteous attorney. At no time did Mr. Burge sugar coat things. My case was just dismissed, and this is due to Mr. Burge knowing his business. It was a year long process, and at various points I was quite concerned, but that was due to ignorance on my end. His staff is polite, responsive, and timely. There were times when he was late to hearings due to other engagements and Hawaii traffic, but it was always cleared ahead of time and caused no issues. I received my second DUI in January 2016. I was at the tow yard picking up my car when another man overheard me tell the cashier that I don't have an ID because I was pulled over for a DUI and my license was taken away. The man came over to me (as I waited for my boyfriend to email me a copy of my passport) and gave me Jonathan Burge's business card and told me a brief description about how I should go with this guy because of the Won case and that I can google him. When I got home, the first thing I did was google Jonthan Burge to find that everything the man told me was true. I did not hesitate to call that exact same day. Jonathan's secretary called ME back after receiving the answering machine and not leaving a message. She called me back asking if I called, I said yes and explained what had happened and she was able to schedule me an appointment within the next business day. I was actually surprised that she took the initiative to call me back. Anyway, about the bad reviews saying that he uses "scare tactics", is totally insane! When I went to see Jonathan for my free consultation, he was up front and went over the worst case scenario which I appreciate cause he is NOT sugaring coating it by saying that he's going to get you off yet he's not saying he will lose. He is just giving you a heads up just in case things do not work out in your favor. I mean yah it sucks to hear the worst outcome possible but he was just saying it could happen but most likely it wont happen yada yada. Jonathan also went over how he would proceed with my case and the tactics he would use, which totally made sense and made me feel assured that he is going to try his best to win my case. I decided to go with him as the rate he gave me seemed fair compared to another lawyer who quoted me 3 grand! What I also liked was that he even has a payment plan option if you're not able to pay the full rate all at once. As for all the paper work and court, Jonathan's staff emailed me and kept on top of everything. I never had any problems with scheduling an appointment if I had any questions relating to my case. I had to meet with him twice: 1) because I thought I had something that would work in my favor and wanted his opinion if it would help and 2) when I was emailed the motion he was going to use for my case I was confused as it was written and how he was going to go about it with my case. Needless to say, if you ever have any questions, his staff is always helpful in scheduling appointments for you if you any questions for Jonathan. My case was today, I met with him on Friday to go over on how he was going to go about my case. When I met with him, again, he did say the worst outcome that would not happen (Jail time) then gave me the worst outcome that could happen (community service and no license for a year). Again, I appreciate it cause wouldn't it suck more if you go into court thinking he's going to win your case only to find out something totally different happened (Trust me, cause I had this happen to me with my other lawyer for my 1st dui)? I had the junk end of the stick where all my cops showed up and that the state was ready to go to trial. At this point, I'm so nervous and think GUARANTEE I'm going to be charged with my 2nd dui. Anyway, he talked to me outside saying how we're going to try and fight it and that its worth a try because he feels like it could go either way so minus well try. And this is where those bad reviews are wrong because he really does try! My other lawyer took a plea and basically my 2 grand was just for him to do all my paperwork and NOT win my case. So my case went to trial and the arresting officer testified. When it came to Jonathan's turn to question the cop, he basically went about how everything the cop said was contradicting and not enough evidence for me to be found guilty. Even in his closing argument, he acknowledged that the cops testimony wasn't sufficient enough for me to be found guilty. With that said, the Judge dismissed my case! He even told me "Call my office so we can email you the form to get this expunged from your record". Seriously, Jonathan Burge is straight forward, professional and does his best to get your case dismissed! I would ABSOLUTELY recommend Jonathan! Everything with this unfortunate situation went smoothly and I yes I was a little nervous (cause I was just expecting the worst just in case) but I felt at ease throughout the whole process. Well what can I say about Jonathan Burge, I have to say that he has the skills and tactics to win a case no matter the challenge. I was arrested for a DUI in Oct. 2014. I am Commercial Driver License Class A with Tanker and HAZMAT endorsements not to mention also motorcycle license. I went to truck Driving school in San Antonio,TX and Paid $5,000 to get through school and training. I was frantic, scared, I mean I thought my career was over, my life. Driving was my passion and my career. I put my life and others lives in jeopardy that night. I blew really high, almost 3 times the legal limit which is a lot for a small person of 125 lbs. Today is 7/8/16 and I'm happy to share that I went down to his office yesterday to fill out my expungement form!! As I said, I've gone down this road before, and although the case was won the first time also, my experience was extremely different. I had a different attorney and was basically left hanging and stressed the whole time, for over a year. Jonathan is a straight up attorney.
