If you're going to enter the battle of the Mt Eden cafes, you have to do it right. I've already been here a couple of times, and I have to say, I'm not impressed. A couple of weeks ago, upon discovering our beloved Olaf's was too busy to accommodate us, my husband and I decided to have breakfast at Jones. It was pretty busy, but we found a table upstairs and ordered two flat whites and poached eggs on toast for me. I always order poached eggs on toast, I like it and I know what to expect. They didn't seem to be able to comprehend my order, and instead had to enter it in the register as some kind of "special order".
Our coffees came after a bit of a wait, and then we waited for my eggs. And waited. And my coffee got cold as I tried to make it last so I could drink it with my eggs. And finally we asked a passing water where they were. He asked another waitress to ask the kitchen. At no point did anyone convey to us what was happening - we just watched various exchanges between staff and worried looks in our direction. Eventually, the eggs arrived - overcooked and the bread under toasted. Bleh. On our way out, someone asked if the eggs arrived (!) and seemed pleased they had. No one apologised, at any point, for the ridiculous wait on the eggs. We won't be back for breakfast - maybe for a coffee, if we're feeling desperate. read more
