The road gets pretty windy once you hit Copperfield, but the views of Hells Canyon and Snake River are worth it! There are quite a few pull-outs to stop and take pics. We also passed numerous campground and picnic options. We enjoyed driving over the dam and taking pictures from both sides. Such beautiful views! If you follow the road to the end, passed the dam about 0.5 mile, you come across the visitors center. It was closed when we arrived, but we did enjoy watching the rafters and kayakers from the back deck. Would highly recommend a visit!

It's the last of a series of dams that pen…read moreup the Snake River as it rolls along a steep, deep crevasse that separates Oregon and Idaho. To access the dam, you pick up Hells Canyon Road at Copperfield (if coming from the Oregon side) and snake your way up along the Hells Canyon Reservoir for about half an hour. It's a scenic drive that offers plenty of places to pull off and swim, and quite a few trailheads for hikes up into the Idaho side of the canyon. The route takes you along the base of some very steep cliffs and overhangs, and you can tell by the dents in the blacktop that there are often rockfalls along here. My wife was white-knuckling it during most of the ride out. The dam itself is nothing too spectacular, but it does sit in a very scenic spot on the river. Once you cross the dam, the road ends in a boat launch, and this is where the adventure begins. Here you can put in for kayaking, rafting and drift-boat floats down the canyon. Fishing abounds. The dam itself has a little visitor's center with historical photographs and a couple of Idaho Power employees who can answer questions. We were able to get some good info on road quality for our forthcoming drive up the forest service roads into the Wallowas. Super helpful! If you're not floating or fishing or otherwise using the recreation side of the river, there's not a whole lot to do here other than learn about the dam and take in some pretty scenic views from the canyon floor. It's almost more about the views on the drive in. And you'll be seeing them again on the drive out, as there's nowhere to go from here but back the way you came.

Zim's Hot Springs - New Meadows, Idaho…read more When you first pull up to Zim's Hot Springs, you'll notice the camp spots right away -- pretty cool to see! I could definitely see myself coming back for an overnight stay next time. That said, some of the features listed on their website don't quite match what's actually there. The "bar" is basically an open Gatorade/Coca-Cola setup with a fan behind it -- more like a refreshment station than a bar. The game room, though, was surprisingly nice for what it has and adds a fun touch to the place. I was a little disappointed when I wanted to grab a beer and found out glass isn't allowed (which I totally understand), but it would've been nice to have another option. On the positive side, the place was clean, the pool was great, and the hot tub was super relaxing. Sitting there on a crisp autumn day in the mountains -- you really can't beat that view or that vibe. The meditation music was excellent. The service was nothing special. They did their job. They gave me a basket. They took my money and told me have a good day. Overall, Zim's is a solid 4 out of 5 for me. A few tweaks and updates to match their online descriptions, and it'd easily be a five-star stop. Definitely worth checking out for yourself!

"…read more Walla Walla's downtown has several tasting rooms (at least one fully functioning winery--Seven Hills Winery), several restaurants, coffeehouses (Starbucks at perfect center of downtown--Main and 1st), a visitor center, bronze artworks on the sidewalks, the Marcus Whitman (a historic building), a Macy's (housed in a historic building), Whitman College (on one end), a couple of banks, and several other small locally owned businesses. Street parking (some diagonally, some regular parallel) and a couple of parking lots, are usually sufficient for tourists and regulars (currently, roadwork is causing havoc with street parking and limiting some spaces). The downtown area is very walkable, day or night. So, come on down. I LOVE downtown. "Things will be great when you're downtown!" (Thanks, Petula Clark.)

There's a small pull out area and parallel parking available for a few cars- though when we were there it was very quiet. Perfect. Standing there at the memorial, you can't help but stand in awe of the natural inspiring beauty of the area. The mountains and hills and golden valley in the distance- its truly magnificent. I don't know if it's just the gorgeous views surrounding or the incredible histories of the pioneers on the trail - probably both. But this is a very special place. You can't help but pause, take a deep breath and reflect on what was and what is.

Few helpful tips, we went middle of June and there were soooooo many mosquitoes idk if I just want thinking, or they just tend to eat me alive in the evenings only but bring lots of bug spray. There's 2 cars that have windows and 2 that don't so if it's a full ride be prepared dress appropriately depending on the time of year u visit. Like I mentioned earlier these are all volunteers, they make their clothing and provide their own weapons and blanks. The upkeep of the train and tracks is very costly so donations are very appropriate. Be sure to bring plenty of smaller bills and most of the town would prefer cash purchases as well. There's also a flea market held here so check for that. There's also mining for Gold lessons and some areas to try it first hand. If you find real Gold flakes you can keep up to 3 for 5$ per person because it's coming from an Oregon State Park. There is a lift on the train to help with any handicap needs, and on that note if you end up in Bakers City, OR (were we drove through to get here) is an amazing playground where inclusion of all ability types was number 1 in design. This entire experience was so great, worth Every penny for the steam engine ticket and worth the money we donated at the end.
