Dr. Mauro is very efficient, and a very down to earth person. During the same appointment, he extracted a tooth and did a bone graft. His office personnel and lab techs have those same qualities. The waiting room is tiny, but there have always been enough chairs for the folks who come to him for oral surgery. read more

I'm a grown man.. but also a complete wuss when it comes to fear of dentists. I've had a string of bad luck with the teeth the past few years.. mainly biting into food with pieces of bone inside that like to break them, resulting in the need to have three of them pulled.. hmmm.. is it wrong to say that visiting Dr. Mauro was the only pleasant experience? well, maybe not the experience under the drill itself, but the Dr. was by far the best oral professional I've ever dealt with. The only reason I went to Dr. Mauro's office is because I was told, by my insurance company, that he was in network. At my first visit, the front office made a copy of my card and assured me they participated with my insurance company. Dr. Mauro himself told me that I would be in network. After the procedure was complete, I was told that they really weren't in network and I would have to pay the out of network deductible. This cost me an additional $400. When I complained about the incorrect information I had been given, the front office person just kept repeating "ultimately, it is the patient's responsibility to make sure their insurance is in network". I don't know what else I could have done. I just assumed the info they gave me at the onset was correct. I've certainly learned my lesson and will always insist on getting things in writing instead of just a verbal assurance. However, I felt like the office did NOTHING to try and compromise on the final bill to accept some responsibility for misleading me. Especially since my insurance is provided by one of the largest employers in the area. There is no excuse for them not having accurate information regarding whether or not they are in network. read more

I was very nervous to get all 4 of my impacted wisdom teeth removed because my friends had told me horror stories about their recoveries and because I have a very low pain tolerance. This was also my first "surgery." I got the "middle" anesthesia (where you aren't fully awake or fully passed out - you don't remember anything about the actual procedure but can remember them talking a little bit) and was awake and almost fully functioning immediately after the procedure since they can control exactly when you "come back" with that particular anesthesia. The procedure only took 20 minutes total (yes, only 20 minutes to extract all 4)! The staff was incredible, along with Dr. Mauro. He's very matter-of-fact and you can tell he's the best of the best when it comes to any oral surgery, especially wisdom teeth extractions. They gave me all of the healing supplies and a sheet that explains exactly how to do everything, how often, and what to expect while recovering (very detailed instructions for the first 4 hours after getting home). Today is my first full day of recovery and I am in almost no pain. This might be because I've been following the healing instructions to a T and am taking Tylenol and antibiotics he prescribed, or simply because everyone is different while recovering. Nonetheless, I would recommend Dr. Mauro to everyone needing to get any oral surgery; it was a simple, stress-free experience. read more

I've seen Dr. Mauro for a tooth extraction and subsequent implant. It's been easy to make appointments and the office staff have been efficient. Dr. Mauro has been very pleasant and has really done a great job reducing my anxiety before each procedure. Dr. Mauro and his staff have made sure that I'm comfortable and not feeling any pain. Everyone was very nice, but I heard something different from every staff member. When I 1st called I was told I'd receive paperwork in the mail the week before. After not receiving anything 3 days before my procedure I called and was told they don't send paperwork in the mail but call the week before from co-pays and what to do to prepare. During that call I was told I'd have IV sedation, but when I got to the office I was told not a local anesthesia would be used and that's what I paid for it my copay. But once I was in the chair told actually paid for sedation. So very confusing, but the staff was very polite. I had 2 impacted wisdom teeth that have been trying to come in for 10 years. My dentist kept referring me to get them out but I was terrified and so I kept putting it off. Eventually, I decided it was better to get it over with than continue having issues every few months. I called to set up an appointment with Dr. Mauro (I found him through my insurance) and the lady who answered the phone seemed nice enough. I though it was weird that she wanted to schedule me for my consultation and surgery back to back but I went with it. She had an opening that same week and a couple more in the following weeks. I was still nervous so I put it off about 2 weeks. FF Day of appointment, I get there and realize they have a dog in the office which threw me completely off. The front desk staff seemed pretty nice and got me all set up with papers. I asked if they had gotten any records from my dentist and they said no... I thought that was weird but I don't know if it's even necessary. I was called back to do my panoramic x-Ray and was immediately whisked away into a room to be prepared for surgery. Now, I had done my research on Dr. Mauro and knew that he had been called "rude" and "abrasive" so I was prepared to kind of proceed with caution. I was really nervous and I know I can get on Drs nerves with all of my questions. He came into the room to go over the x-Ray and explained that I only had 2 wisdoms on the bottom (I knew that and thank goodness) and that they were bone impacted (did not know that). I asked how long he thought It would take to get them out and he said 20min total but that he would have to drill some bone. He also explained that one was sitting right on a nerve and my chance for nerve damage was 15%. I told him I wanted lidocaine only but that I get nervous with it (makes my heart race) and he offered something called carbocain which is apparently lidocaine without the epinephrine. I declined (didn't want to try something new on such a scary day). He put me in the next room and put some numbing gel on my gums and gave me the lidocaine shots - kind of abrasively. My dentist is very gentle with this part so that was a little scary for me. I asked to listen to headphones, he said of course. He went right in and did his thing and had both teeth out in under 10 minutes. It was SO easy and pain free. By the time the lidocaine started wearing off, I could feel a stitch poking me and so when the office called to check on me, I told her and she had me come back up there so they could fix it. No problem. In conclusion, I will say that he isn't the most gentle, sympathetic, or personable guy, but he did a damn good job. He did tell me as he was finishing up that I don't have any sockets, he's stitching them up so I wouldn't have to worry about dry socket... I looked it up and it says you could still get dry sockets with stitches so I don't know... I had this procedure done about 19 hours ago and am ok. Ice on 20 min, Ice off 20 min. I'm only taking regular Tylenol for pain (my choice). I'm also taking amoxicillin to prevent infection (normally I wouldn't but again, get have a dog in the office)... So far so good but the procedure itself was a breeze!! read more

My daughter had an infected tooth. Her primary dentist referred her to a pediatric dentist because she was non-compliant. They recommended a different oral surgeon who was not 'kid friendly' and was not able to extract her tooth and wanted to put her under at the hospital. We couldn't wait a month for that to happen, so we were then referred to Dr. Mauro who not only successfully extracted her tooth but treated her with kindness and understanding. The staff was happy and upbeat which is refreshing at a dentist office. Very professional, clean and organized. read more

I previously had two wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Mauro and found him to be pleasant and professional as was his assistant. I returned for a second extraction session for my last wisdom tooth and it was not pleasant. His demeanor had changed considerably. I had read a review elsewhere that Dr. Mauro denied a patients request for nitrous gas and wouldn't explain to her why. I also requested the gas because I require a lot of shots to numb properly and I wanted to be assured of not having any issues with pain during the surgery. He didn't acknowledge my request for gas. He was "yes, yes, ok" about everything else then nothing when I said gas. When I was led into the surgery room, I saw the nitrous tank, could hear the gas flowing and the assistant was holding the mask. The doctor was behind me. After I sat down, nothing was said but the gas was audibly shut off. Very strange. I was never given the gas I requested, nor did he deny it verbally. He just ignored the request without comment. Dr. mauro likes to talk politics before he operates on you. On both visits he mentioned something about government welfare or race then quickly moves into operating after you reply. This is incredibly bad form as you don't want him bearing ill will because your politics don't match. Perhaps we didn't agree this time. The extraction was BRUTAL! I could feel my jaw rocking back and forth, from the leverage he was applying. My jaw has never moved like that, including the previous extractions, and it was disconcerting. When I grunted an appeal for technique over force, he responded, without pausing, "you're a big guy, you can take it." He then broke out the drill. He never explained to me what he was doing to me, he just did it. Once the tooth is out, you can't really ask, you can't speak from the numbness and biting down on the gauze. His assistant shook her head when he was wrenching on me, and froze when I looked at her. After the tooth was out he took what looked like needle nose pliers and told his assistant, not me, that he was "just going to clean up the bone." I had horrible swelling and I think my jaw was cracked. I still have a large bump in my jawline where the tooth was. That's what happens when a bone breaks. When I went back two weeks later for a checkup, he tried to sell me on further services but I understandably declined. I had referred several people to Dr. Mauro previously including a friend who thought he was loosing his teeth due to diabetes. None of them chose him as their surgeon and with hindsight I am relieved I am not responsible for them possibly having a bad experience. i won't be going back to Dr. Mauro. read more

Dr Mauro and his staff made me feel so comfortable, and I hate going to dentist. I had all four wisdom teeth removed, two of them were impacted. I've never had surgery before, so this was my first experience with it. It went fabulous! If I ever need to see an oral surgeon again, I will definitely be back here. I've had the opportunity to see Dr Mauro a number of times and he performed my jaw surgery and a few small procedures. The results were all I hoped for. He is a gifted surgeon and true professional. Dr. Mauro is a bully. Perhaps just to women. My husband is going to him soon so we'll find out if he selectively bullies women or if it's everyone. I got a dental procedure that required the use of antiobiotics but nobody told me that i needed to take them and nobody called them into the pharmacy for about a week after my procedure was done. (He told me this commonly happens "but it's the pharmacy's fault"). The sheet that I took home said to "take medications" and I assumed that meant tylenol (SINCE NO ONE MENTIONED NEEDING ANTIOBIOTICS). So when I came in next I calmly told Dr. Mauro that I was upset that no one told me I needed antibiotics and that I only found out about it a week later because the pharmacy called me to tell me my antibiotics and pain medications were ready. Instead of apologizing he blew up at me. Raised his voice and talked about how they would NEVER forget to tell a patient to take antibiotics and that "I must have not been paying attention when they told me about it". He ranted for a little while and then finished it up with a "so what you really meant to say was "I messed up and didn't listen properly"". I am a medical student. I wouldn't have missed it if they in any way shape or form told me to take antibiotics. Another instance was a few months later (because he cancelled on me out of the blue and the office said he would simply be gone for the month) he tried to harass me for not coming in sooner to get my tooth checked even after I told him I was not in because they cancelled on me and he was gone for a month. If you are female I would highly recommend going to a different dentist if you don't want to be bullied. read more

He doesn't even deserve ONE star. The receptionist was really nice. The tech was DISGUSTING and should be fired. The doctor was an arrogant bastard. I was referred there by my dentist to have a spot on my tongue investigated. When I FINALLY got in, I was taken in for x-rays. I had just had x-rays taken by my dentist and was concerned about too much radiation but chiefly I didn't understand why x-rays were needed for a tongue. The tech said she had no idea and went (I thought) to ask the doctor. I heard her say that I didn't want x-rays and she had no idea why. I stuck my head around the corner to explain that I had already had x-rays taken very recently at my dentist's office and would not like more if they were not necessary. The doctor came up to me and said, "You can't pick and choose which parts of the exam you want. If you don't get x-rays, I'm not going to do anything for you." Period. That was it. I told him that was fine, I was leaving and I wouldn't be back. And he had better not CHARGE me! What kind of an ASS is that?? read more

I was in need of an oral surgeon and went online to find one. I found Dr. Joseph Mauro and read his reviews, and decided to make an appt. I live an hour away from his office, so I was really hoping this would work out. Today was my visit and could not be more impressed. The office environment is impeccable bright and airy, the administrative staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Angie Dr, Mauro assistant is wonderful, very friendly, and upbeat, calmed my nerves. And then there is Dr. Mauro... this man is FANTASTIC! he is so friendly, took time with me never made me feel like he had more important things to do. He answered all my questions and had some great suggestions, and removed the fear I had regarding the procedure. He put me right at ease. HIs bedside manner is incredible. All dentist should take a lesson or two from Dr, Mauro, the fear of the dentist I am sure would be eliminated. I feel very confident with him as my surgeon. He and his entire staff go out of their way to help you get the information you need to make a good decision. I am so grateful I found him. Dr Mauro has been an excellent surgeon for me, my children and my parents. My son had his wisdom teeth extracted without incident. When my daughter was 6 I brought her into the office because of swelling in her cheek. He immediately took her into surgery and performed an incision and drainage that saved her from having a permanent facial scar. Unknown to me, the infection was so bad it was within hours of bursting out of her cheek. In both instances he handled my children beautifully. They were never in fear and he even made follow-up calls to see how they were doing. My mother had a lesion on her tongue that he removed on a Saturday in the hospital. Dr Mauro is a top surgeon in his field, and I know for a fact that people even travel from out of state to him so that he can do their jaw reconstruction surgeries. His staff is also very knowledgable about the procedures and are great at answering questions. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Mauro to my closest of friends. read more
