I also like that she focuses on nailing down the basics - the bow hold, shifting and scales so you have all the tools to play most any song and play it well! Further, she suggested extra material and pointers that I have found very helpful while learning the instrument and techniques. Make no mistake, the cello is a difficult instrument to learn and master but Carli makes this process easy. Owned first in our family by accomplished musicians and piano teachers and now suffering through those beginning scales and first piano pieces ("Mary Had a Little Lamb" has been played about a bazillion times in our home this year). The piano has always looked lovely in our home, but looks can be deceiving. Steinway pianos of that era have some issues. So I wasn't at all surprised that some serious renovation and reconditioning is recommended at this point. Our current piano teacher highly recommended Denis Wilkinson and he was professional, prompt and courteous. It was easy to schedule an appointment through email (http://wilkinsonpianoservice.com/Contact.html) and he called the day of the appointment to let me know he was available earlier if that was convenient for me. Mr. Wilkinson worked at Moe's Pianos in Portland before hanging up his own shingle almost 20 years ago. And according to his website, he is the world's only manufacturer of replacement block valves for Aeolian player pianos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeolian_Company). Even though a serious reconditioning and replacement is recommended, that more expensive option was not pushed on us. And after we discussed the piano's current use and life, we were given some other reasonably priced options. I really appreciate when you feel you can trust a professional's option because they aren't pushing you (or guilting you) into services that are beyond your comfort level or need. That alone is worth my continued business.

When I first started began, I didn't know anything about form, scales, arpeggios, nothing. Since then I've learned enough and gained the confidence to play in live jam sessions! Jed is an amazing bassist, a great coach, and able to identify very specific areas in my play style that need improvement. He's also put me on a pace that is challenging but not overwhelming, and always keeps things light and fun. Jed has a great music selection when it comes to assigning songs to learn, from Earth Wind and Fire to Smino. I have a lot of fun practicing on my own and every song he assigns is meant to solidify the drills we're currently working on. Jed also keeps our sessions organized and focused; he's always communicative and follows up every sessions with notes and assignments. I know I have a long way to go, but I wouldn't have this perspective without Jed's ability to play, teach, and create a plan that has set me up with a very strong foundation.
