He is not only a plugged-in-techno-geeky all-around great guy, but he takes seriously the faith and his role as Pastor. A progressive blogger and podcaster, Landon has wonderful perspective on faith and culture. I did not have the opportunity to attend services at Liberty, but my guess is that it is traditional spiced up with some creative flare. If you are looking for a church in that area, I would definitely contact Landon and/or drop by for a visit. DISCLAIMER: Yes, I give every church FIVE STARS not because every church is superfantablous, but every church that I will review can certainly be a FIVER to someone. I will never review a church that I would not be willing to try myself if I were looking. No need to bad mouth freaky-scary churches because they are uh, well, freaky and scary.

I started going to DC when I moved away for college and had to search for a new church. Now, after…read morefive years, it's home. The first time I went, I noticed a few things: it was in a warehouse - no stained glass windows in sight - also, the pastor was in jeans and a t-shirt, and someone I'd never met came up to me after worship and gave me the biggest hug ever. I can also say that the sermons are incredibly engaging, and somehow always seem to speak to me right where I am. Folks, this is a special kind of place. Communion is available every week, and you don't have to be a member of the church or take any classes or anything to come to the table. Offerings are taken with the lights dimmed, so no one is taking note of anyone else's contribution. Worship comes in more forms than just music - painting, poetry, dance - and is intense and candid. You get the sense that you're among people who aren't trying to pretend to be better than you - they're there because they need God and love him. Pastor Michael works straight through the Bible (rather than preaching topically) and truly hides behind the cross to allow God to speak to his people rather than just hearing what Michael has to say. The pastoral staff all share this humility and are compassionate, dedicated people, and have become true friends of mine. Something else worth noting is that they have a really interesting program going wherein every fourth Sunday, they close the doors and cancel church and take the entire congregation out to serve the community. It might be cleaning up the grounds of a community facility, raking leaves for people for free, bringing food to folks in the community who are having trouble making ends meet, or just hanging out at a nursing home listening to the residents and encouraging them in the Lord. The people at DC specialize in loving people to life. I have felt, in a few other churches, that folks have looked down their nose at me - not at DC. Not that it's perfect, but it is a community full of loving, real people. No masks in sight. Uncomfortable? Sure. But you'll grow. :)

Shoal Creek has been a fit, and we love the sound Biblical teaching at a place where the lead Pastor doesn't always have to be in the limelight--hearing from various members of the pastoral team is awesome! If you are looking for kindness and warmth, this is not the place to go. I was a guest in their church, walked in the front doors and no one acknowledged me. I picked up an order of service and sat in the back row. No one greeted me at all. At the passing of peace the only person to shake my hand was the presiding minister. No one around me even acknowledged my presence. At the end of the service I walked out and no one said anything to me then either. I have found most Episcopal churches to be welcoming, however I have not found Grace Episcopal church to be warm, inviting or welcoming at all to newcomers and guests. I won't be back. I'll find another church.

After about a year, we decided to try it again. It was as though we had never left. That sealed the deal for us. Grace is a progressive congregation. It is truly welcoming to all. It is heavily involved in feeding ministries and social justice. The congregation feeds people weekly through Micah ministries and operates a food pantry several times per week. The rector has been widely recognized for her work on social justice issues. If you're looking for a church, this is definitely a place to check out. If you're unsure about religion, give it a try. You'll find a community that cares about you and celebrates you for the person you are.
