Pets At Home
(2 reviews)
While this isn't our favourite Pets At Home location (getting in and out of the car park is an…read moreabsolute nightmare), it is handy for me when I take the bus into town to do some shopping. We stopped here twice this week, because we found a flea on one of the kittens... good thing we have one all white kitten, otherwise we probably wouldn't have caught it until it was out of control. One of their staff members had to come and assist as some of the flea treatments are locked and controlled. We also wanted some assistance since the kittens are just 3 months and wanted to make sure we purchased the right treatment for them. The staff member was very knowledgeable and also suggested that we begin treatment for worms as it is possible that if the cat was grooming and ingested any fleas/eggs, they could develop worms. Yikes! The staff member also told us what the difference was between controlled treatments, versus the non-controlled treatments. Apparently it has to do with whether the treatments have actually be proven to work. We didn't really want to take a chance as we know what it is like to be bitten by fleas and wouldn't want the kittens to suffer. After purchasing everything we went home and treated the kittens. However, we realized that we didn't get anything to treat the apartment. So I went back to get something to treat the carpet, their bedding, and some of the furniture they like to nap on. There is such a huge choice of items from sprays to powders... they even have foggers/bombs if you are really having a bad infestation or just want to be extra cautious. There was no staff member around, so I just read the back of every spray and powder until I settled on one that I thought would treat the problem and would be easy to use. They did have one item that does not contain pesticides and is ok to use with pets in the room, but the rest do contain pesticides, however, with the exception of the foggers, it looks like the pets (and children) need to be out of the room for between 30 minutes and an hour. I also picked up some vacuum powder... just to be safe. Overall, not a bad location with all of the same items you would find at any of their locations, and they do have knowledgeable staff, I just don't find them as friendly as the staff at the Middlebrook location.
Pets at home conforms to the chains minimum standards in every way. Strandard layout, with exactly…read morethe same products on the shelves as every other store. Standard unit containing the live stock, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc, and a small aviery with a handful of birds, fairly large aquatics display across the back of the store with a large selection of fish and aquaria equipment for sale. But in general not the best prices avaliable and certainly the fish dont tend to be long lived once brought home no matter what the experience level of the fishkeeper. The major plus point is that they refuse to sell a fishtank without a filter, though little information is given to the new fishkeeper as to why they need the filter or how to keep it running effectively.

The store is only small but carries a massive range of livestock and sundries, all available space is used to it's maximum capacity, so it's probably not the best place for a person who is scared of snakes to be! They have your usual corns and pythons, but they also stock more unusual animals and have a large range of tarantulas and scorpions too. Couple with the friendly and very helpful staff, this is definitely one of the best reptile stores you could hope to visit.
The Destitute Animal Shelter

To be honest, I have never visited an animal shelter that would get less than five stars. To take…read moreon the responsibility of providing shelter and rescuing animals with very limited resources, that takes a big heart... although if you see how cute some of these animals are, who could resist?! Originally I had suggested to Mr. Snarky that we go play with some puppies to help relieve the stress caused by work. I remembered that there are some universities in the U.S. that are bring cute animals in right before exam time to help students relieve stress. So I thought it could work in this instance. Parking isn't a problem, but if you find all the parking on the road taken, we parked at Sainsbury's on our first visit (since we were going to pick up a couple of things after) and walked over. You could hear the dogs barking and there were a couple out in the play area. When we walked in, there were loads of pictures of animals that had been adopted. The lady behind the counter told us not to stick our fingers in the cages... so unfortunately no petting or cuddling with the animals. They have more dogs than cats (well at the time we went) and they seemed to be larger dogs. I only noticed this because we live in an apartment so we don't have a lot of room for a large dog, nor a yard of our own. However, there was one cutie who must have caught onto the 'no fingers in the cages' rule as she pushed herself up against the door to her pen so you didn't have to stick your fingers in the cage. Clever girl! And her eyes... oh those eyes. We went inside to look at the cats. At the time we thought they only had six cats as those were the only ones on display. There was a black kitten that was so loving and couldn't seem to get enough of Mr. Snarky. We had seen an ad for Suzie, a 3-year-old cat who had been at the shelter for about 13 months and couldn't seem to get adopted because she is a bit of a grouch. Mr. Snarky has a soft spot for these kinds of animals and was considering adopting her. We left and while we did not get the cuddle/play time I had been hoping for, we did succeed in starting a discussion about adopting a pet. On the next visit, one of the staff spent some time with us showing us the cats and talking about the characteristics of each one. Our original idea was to adopt Suzie, but also get a younger cat for some playfulness, but also knew that the staff would let us know what would be realistic. The staff member did tell us that Suzie wouldn't be good with another cat and the black cat that we were looking at had just been adopted. That's when the staff member told us about two pairs of siblings that were ready for adoption if we really wanted two cats. They were just being held in different areas because they didn't have enough room in that particular room. So we took a look at the first pair... two months old! The sisters (one black and one white) were curled up together in the midst of other cats pawing and meowing at us. There is a male cat (not sure if he has been adopted yet) but he is a brilliant, loving ball of fur and we nearly adopted him... you should go visit him. However, I may have fallen in love with the little white mustache on the black kitten of the pair. We then went upstairs to visit a brother and sister duo that were absolutely full of energy and if you have a fly problem, they will take care of it! The staff member did explain details about both sets of kittens so we could understand what we were getting into and make the best decision. Ultimately we went with the two-month old kittens. They chipped the kittens, fed them a bit of chicken, and filled out the paperwork for us. We also picked out some collars and tags which they engrave with your address and phone number... although these two are far too small to be wearing anything like that. The staff were so helpful and answered our questions and told us that the kittens have had their first set of vaccines and gave us a voucher to get them speyed at six months at their vet. They put all of their paperwork and records in a folder for safe keeping and also put a piece of the bedding that the kittens were sleeping on in the kennel to help with the transport. They also said they would give us a call in a week or two to see how things are going and told us to ring them or stop in if we have any questions or concerns. The kittens are now exploring their new home... don't worry, I will post some pictures :) You should definitely go and visit and they are in need of donations (bedding, food, money, etc.) and also volunteers to walk dogs.

5 Stars - Only Because of Abi! (Middlebrook)…read more I never leave reviews, but on this occasion I had to. My partner and I visited the Westhoughton Pets at Home a couple of days before welcoming a new member to our family (Oakley ). We weren't sure what we needed for a puppy, so we asked Abi for help - and she was absolutely brilliant. Abi guided us through everything, from puppy essentials to setting Oakley up for success. We returned two days later (with Oakley!) and Abi once again went above and beyond - helping us choose the right food, explaining puppy nutrition, recommending toys and training aids, and answering all our questions. Abi is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and kind - you can see her genuine passion for what she does. Having worked in retail as a GM for almost a decade, I know it's rare to find someone who truly cares about the customer experience in this way. Pets at Home - you have an absolute star on your team. We hope Abi is recognised and valued for the difference she makes.

The car park is large and free, although we do avoid Middlebrook when Bolton is having a home match as we don't want to battle traffic. We have used their click and collect service, which can be a bit of a money saver with special online offers, but not necessarily convenient. For example, Mr. Snarky wanted to get a deluxe cat tree for the kittens (secretly I think it was for his enjoyment!) and could save 10% by ordering online and picking it up in store. So we did this. Since we had ordered on the same day and been able to pick up the carriers for the kittens on the same day, we just figured this would be ready same day. Turns out that the order wouldn't be ready until the next day, but we had already set off for Middlebrook. We went in to get kitten food and Mr. Snarky went to look to see if they had the tree in stock. They had the exact cat tree he had ordered sitting on the shelf, but they said that we couldn't pick up the order until the next day. Other than that, the staff are friendly and helpful, especially when we brought back a box of kitten food because it was open, which means it was starting to go off and smell. We bagged it up and took it back with the receipt and they let us exchange for another box no questions asked. They also have a nice selection of cat toys, which of course our kittens play with for about 10 minutes before playing with the box it came in or the kitty litter. We find their prices about average if not cheaper than getting their food or litter at the grocery store and they do have a loyalty card program which is easy to join and you can designate a charity that they will donate to. I might also really enjoy watching the big fluffy bunnies ;)
