City Park is a 5.5 acre park located on the east side of the city in one of Sunrise's original…read moreneighborhoods. It was one of the first parks built in the City of Sunrise. Through the years it had become run down and people stopped using it but in 2021 the park got a make over paid for by a bond referendum approved by voters. The park was redesigned to bring fun, fitness, and entertainment to city residents. Improvements to the park include an expansive 140-yard multipurpose field and amphitheater with a professional audiovisual system and a modern green room that is used for community events, concerts and sports. For fitness enthusiasts there is a quarter mile walking path along the outside of the field with seven outdoor exercise stations that use your own body weight to get you in shape. There is also a new playground with sun shades and splash pad so the kiddies can cool off after play. Two newly resurfaced tennis courts appeal to tennis players. While all of the new amenities are great the star of the park has to be the three fully covered and lighted basketball courts with professional rims and backboards. Every court was being used and enjoyed when I visited the park. With this park Sunrise lives up to its motto of "live, work and play in the city of Sunrise." Money from the bond also paid for improvements to the adjacent Village Multipurpose Center. Another welcome feature that helps visitors to feel safe day or night is security features throughout the park with emergency health stations. Rounding out the park are a pavilion that can be rented, gas barbecue grills, picnic tables, baby changing areas, bottle filling water fountains and mosaic chess boards. There are up to 100 available parking spots and bike lanes which connect the park to other community corridors. It took over a year to complete the renovations but now an underutilized park in the city has become a destination that has rejuvenated recreation in the city.

Amenities include a baseball/softball field, basketball court, restrooms, computer lab, and community center. The park offers classes, clubs, association meetings, and after school care, summer, and teen programs. The park looks very well maintained. While I prefer parks with hiking trails it is nice that the city provides a safe place for recreation leagues. It is also good to know that they provide child care and classes.

People from the north lined up to purchase brand new houses that sold between $13,000 and $15,000 when new. Construction continued in the neighborhood until the mid-1970s. The city of Fort Lauderdale annexed Melrose Park in 2002. At the time this park was built, it was named the Melrose Park after the neighborhood. County commissioners agreed to rename Melrose Park in honor of Shirley Small after her death in April 2009. Small was a community leader, and neighborhood activist. She served as the president of the Melrose Neighborhood Association for 10 years. The almost 9 acre park has a fitness trail basketball courts open field for play picnic pavilion and playground. Shirley Small loved to come to the park. Since it is from the 90's the park is looking a little dated. For instance most children's playgrounds have shade covers while this one is in full sun. Still the large size of the park make it a great recreational resource to the community. Melrose Park residence still have much to enjoy.

Upgrades to Cloverleaf Park included a 1,500SF recreation center with a community room, office space and restrooms. Also added to the park was a new video surveillance systems, public WIFI, and utility services. There is a new basketball court, playground with shade structures, fencing, landscaping, irrigation, and a renovated parking lot. When you visit the park,, you can enjoy the picnic area, basketball court, shaded playground, and community garden. Families, fitness enthusiasts, and those seeking a relaxing outdoor environment will enjoy this recreational facility.

It's a very lowkey park with less than 10 parking spaces in front. I went about 3x and each time, saw people going for a walk around the pathway or playing basketball on the court. The trees are beautiful, there's 2 covered areas to sit at and 1 bench that's closest to the playground. I enjoyed my brief 30 minutes here each time I stopped by, it was never too crowded and I always found parking. Definitely a good spot to go to if you're nearby and want to walk your food off haha!
