    New Orleans room panorama.

Stayed at a disappointing B&B in Vicksburg on 7/4 but the story was completely different at the Judge Porter House in Natchitoches on 7/5. The house is more than 100 years old, but proves that a home can be old and traditional, yet updated and fully functional. We felt like we had the place all to ourselves and so we had pretty much the run of this wonderfully preserved and beautifully maintained antebellum-style home a few short blocks from the lakefront district. Our "New Orleans" room upstairs had a huge comfy bed and other beautiful furnishings, plus a super large bathroom and access to a next-door parlor, also upstairs. This would be a great way for two couples to travel, with the two upstairs bedrooms plus the common parlor. The downstairs parlor is also available for guests, as is the porch with a row of big rocking chairs. We were totally comfortable and had the modern amenities: great wi-fi, well-located power outlets, a sharp television with a few hundred (it seemed) channels. Books all over the place to read and movies to borrow on DVD if desired. A fridge full of beverages gratis for guests. Many more little things too many to number! Zeffie made a scrumptious breakfast that the chef at the Waldorf would be hard-pressed to match. And as we were the only visitors she served this morning, we had the opportunity to visit with her and she even shared the recipe of the stupendously great pineapple crumble that led off her breakfast. Anita (housekeeping) and Robert (grounds maintenance) came by during breakfast to say hello. We were made to feel so welcome! Well worth the few extra bucks to stay here!!!

I LOVE YOU MORE THAN MY LUGGAGE, Judge Porter House, and it is Louis Vuitton. There are so many reasons: the easiness of the immaculate premises, the unparalleled location, and the many pleasant nuances like housekeeping that cleans your room while you're at the breakfast. IT'S IN THE "FREEZES BEAUTIFULLY" SECTION OF MY COOKBOOK. Breakfast is better at Judge Porter House than at many fine restaurants. And actually the cinnamon cream cheese stuffed crème brûlée french toast I devoured Sunday was superior to any version they serve at Brennan's. The antiques at Judge Porter House are coveted. At every breakfast it seemed that some guest wanted to "steal one of the lamps". Or for me I'd love to strap that big beautiful teester bed in the New Orleans Room onto the roof of my 2-door Jeep Wrangler. Because, after all... THE ONLY THING THAT SEPARATES US FROM THE ANIMALS IS OUR ABILITY TO ACCESSORIZE.

Breakfast: apple cinnamon waffles with sausage. Also served with a fresh fruit first course, and coffee and grapefruit juice!

This is such a beautiful and homey B&B! The room was absolutely amazing and the innkeeper was incredibly kind. Breakfast was incredible - I highly recommend staying here if you can!

This home is absolutely, my husband and I love history and this house falls in the ambience of history! Our room (Judge Porter room) was beautiful and the bed is very comfortable. The only thing I would suggest as a change would be to assign the breakfast tables by your room name. On our first morning we walked into the dining room and the tables were set very beautifully and tables had water and grapefruit juice already set out. What we didn't know was that Zeffie had set those according to the guest in the house and there were 3 couples (including my husband & me) and 1 single person, Zeffie had the tables set accordingly but the single person was sitting at a table set for 2 people and we sat at an unoccupied table that was not set with water, grapefruit juice or coffee creamer. So we ended up grabbing the items off of the single table for us. That's why I believe each table should have a card stating (Judge Porter; Garden; New Orleans & Princess). Also I wished they would have let us know what the breakfast menu would be for each morning so that we could have made the choice to eat there. My husband was unable to eat most things because he does not eat yogurt or pineapple or French toast he is not a fan of whipped cream!! and there were no alternatives so he didn't eat!! If these changes were made I would love to stay here again, the home and the area is beautiful!!

Keep driving past all the chain hotels/motels by the interstate and pick a place closer to the main strip of shops and restaurants. We were personally greeted by the owners upon arrival. For the first time EVER staying at a B&B, we were allowed to select our rooms from the ones available by visiting each open room. We've probably stayed at 15 B&Bs and nobody has ever let us snoop into all the open rooms (they're usually locked). The owner visited with us on the back screened-in porch for a few minutes before letting us get settled in. The rooms are all tastefully decorated in shabby chic decor with crisp white spreads and linens. Each bedroom has a private bathroom with a shower stall and basket full of fresh, white towels. The bed was SUPER comfortable and we had the best night's sleep of our entire 8-day trip. Breakfast was served promptly at 8:30 am and the owner sat down to enjoy the meal with us. We really enjoyed hearing stories and getting a bit of local culture - it's the best part of traveling. If we're ever in the area again (and we hope to be sometime soon), we'll come back to the Creole Cottage. This would be a great place for several couples to stay and have some privacy but also access to the common areas (dining room and back porch where they stock a mini-fridge with bottled water). The folks at the Creole Cottage treated us like family, and we felt like we'd walked into the pages of Southern Living magazine. Hint: be sure to try the "mayhaw" jelly - it's a local favorite and delicious! We had it on buttered biscuits along with eggs, thick cut bacon, grits, fresh fruit and hot coffee. Perfection!

By good fortune, we booked Creole Cottage on Cane river in walking distance to good food and live music. As an Innkeeper myself, I know a 5 star when I see one and this one earns every star from minute of arrival until your reluctant departure.Warm southern hospitality, immaculate and cozy quarters with a delicious breakfast each day seems to be the norm there. We loved it. The icing on the cake was the innkeeper's "tribal knowledge" of food venues and local sites. Natchitoches is a must go and Creole Cottage is a must stay!

Yes, I know, that's not what it looks like to me either. Originally, it appears that this lovely building was an ice house and then used as a sanitarium. Then it was a home. It's an old converted house on the river and I sat outside drinking my daiquiri late on a Monday night. The breeze off the lake / river was lovely and I enjoyed sitting in the veranda. I felt like such a southern Belle / diva / goddess. My room was lovely. I slept well. It was extremely quiet in my room which was at the back of the house. And even when I woke up I loved sitting on the verandah. First thing I did after making coffee was to head there. They are so thoughtful. There was bug spray on the verandah for me to use. I didn't notice it the night before, but this is the place to being bug spray. At 8:30 there is breakfast. They have coffee and juice (an excellent combo orange - cranberry which I never thought of but will emulate). They brought me a fresh fruit cup and then a lovely almond glazed French toast

We ran away from all of our family and friends on my 50th bday, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, only to end up spending the weekend with amazing hosts (better than family) in a place I would say felt like home, except it was much cleaner than my actual home. They cooked amazing breakfasts for us including a Thanksgiving dinner Thursday night. Gave us great recommendations of the area for us to check out and riverfront & shops that were in walking distance. The hosts even sat up chairs on Saturday night for us to watch the fireworks. afterward, the entire house enjoyed adult conversation & drinks together on the way back to the B&B. Life is so busy and I can't wait to chisel out some time so we can take it easy once again at the GoodHouse. It is good. So very good. Always coffee, I never sleep well away from home, and the beds were so comfy I slept better than a baby. Walking distance to everything. Breakfast could come back around fast enough. We wanted for nothing. If we had a need they took care of it immediately. Cheryl & Ken were the best.
