Somewhere over the Rainbow . . What a treat to tour the artifacts and photos and memorabilia from the life of Judy Garland, who lived till four years old in Grand Rapids MN. It was emotionally rewarding to get a glimpse of her amazing talent, yet sensing the tragedy and sadness for many of her years. Five husbands and addictions and early mistreatment by the movie studios tell the story of her short life. I recommend a visit or many visits, as the praises and new items continue to be donated. Loved how amazing this place was, my mind was blown and it was a thousand times better than expected! The historical objects, seeing her home independently, objects were accompanied with picture and labels. The front desk woman was kind and funny, she had a lot of knowledge too. It is WELL WORTH visiting and seeing how the legend was born. You see many probs and costumes from her day. This is a gem!!!!! Definitely see it for yourself. I do wish they had cuter tshirts, all three of us wanted shirts but the ones we wanted either weren't in our size or otherwise there wasn't many artistic and cute options to choose from. I think they could do a ton of cool shirts with this content but it was lacking. I did and up getting some magnets but yes, create better shirt attire! I wanted so badly to buy one but they all seemed this jersey/sporty style or just odd/funny sayings when they could produce beautiful art from already provided stills in the films and photographs. read more

The museum was such a fun place to visit! The cost the enter was $10 and you are able to to check out artifacts most of them behind glass case. After visiting that area you are lead to a small room that has photos on the wall and a TV playing the video they sell in their store. The museum with the artifacts than connects to Judys childhood house where there was plaques near items with memories or explanations. I personally enjoyed all the antique items around even seeing an old pair of skates on the porch. There was two other areas to visit which was the gift shop and the children's discovery area. The children's discovery area had so many play station for children and also had behind glass cases doll such as Pippi Longstocking. This area for children looked so magical and allows the children to use their imagination with creative play. read more

Wasn't sure what to expect, but we actually loved our visit here. Really interesting to learn more about Judy Garland and her life and family. Never realized she was born here! We enjoyed the exhibits, and especially enjoyed walking through the home she was born in. Fun photo opp in the gift shop, too. Wish we could have been there this week for the 100th birthday celebration! read more

What a pleasant surprise to find this museum! It was the first day open since Covid closure. The history was well presented..kind of made me sad for child stars to find out what they went thru for stardom. What a FABULOUS place! We actually drove a few hours to look at the John Oliver exhibit but were interested in the Judy Garland part too! The person out the counter helping us was SO friendly and knowledgeable and took a genuine interest us and it was so refreshing! The museum was SUPER cool! It just keeps going and going which is great because from the look of it I thought it might be small. My favorite part was Judy Garland's house! So fascinating! Couldn't leave without a t-shirt and pen! I've already recommended this museum to all my friends! Thanks for a great experience!!! read more

Everywhere I turned, there was a problem of some sort. I stood in lines for collective hours, only to be asked, "Where is your paper ticket?" I showed the email verification I had received, and was told, "Do me a favor, sweetie? Exchange that for a paper ticket." If paper tickets are so important, why don't they mail their paper tickets to those of us who order online? When I pursued the holy paper ticket at the **closed** museum, I was told that I had to first pay admission to the **closed** museum. For what? The privilege of standing in a line that stretched from the parking lot to a **closed** lobby, down a long hall, and around a room? I was also asked, "Who told you you needed a paper ticket?" Great. Now I was being asked for office gossip. How do I know who told me to get a paper ticket? I paid the $12.00 admission to the **closed** museum, and got a paper ticket for the evening lecture for which I had paid online. (Thank heavens I had cash; I didn't want to have to deal with someone probably telling me that the museum couldn't take a debit card because of this, that and the other reason.) To signify that I had paid admission to the **closed** museum, I was given a yellow wrist tape - which I did not see on any other person after I circulated widely on the grounds. When I tried to get into the lecture (for which I had paid online, you'll recall), the outside museum doors were locked! I pounded on the doors, got in amid a lot of pearl clutching, and went into the lecture, which had already begun. There, a worker stopped the lecture and said, "Do NOT let anyone else in here." Charming. Nickel and dime me with charges not asked for on the website, lock me out of a lecture I paid for, and greet me with, "Do NOT let anyone else in here." I should have realized how disorganized this thing was going to be when I saw the guest of honor, Judy Garland's son, waiting last in line for food - after he had been working for hours. So despite paying the entrance fee, I cannot tell you what the museum looks like, because I only saw the hall in which I stood in line, and the nondescript room in which the lecture was held. My advice? If you order online, ask for those paper tickets to be mailed to you. read more

It was a really nice experience to visit Judy Garland's birth place. The set up was not at all what I expected, it was wonderful. Besides the house they have many rooms set up for kids to have a blast in. The house was very simple but elegant looking. I was amazed at what I read and saw. This felt like I was right with her and new her. I left there with a whole new knowledge of a movie I watch many of times. I recommend this for anyone!!! read more

I want to give 5 stars but I can't due to the fact that the "minstrel show" blackface photos in the Babes in Arms display aren't labeled in any specific way. They're just slipped in with the rest of the stills and posters. They're in the museum already, and giving them a placard that acknowledges the racial pain will help those individuals who need it most. Especially the kids. Super cute museum. I remember when this house was moved across town to open this place... and I had never set foot inside in all those years until this last summer. Very nice variety of stuff to look at inside and some fun things for the kids outside. Staff was nice. The children museum was surprisingly large with tons of activities. I was super impressed. Clearly a lot of thought and community involvement went into making that area what it is. The space is used well. read more

So my mother and my two nieces came up to Grand Rapids ,MN which is a three hour drive from the cities specifically to come see the museum. Well while out in the parking lot a employee comes walking out to our suv asking if we were here for the Halloween party . I said ," no ", " what do you mean ?" She said ," well it's by apt only ,and it's a Halloween party today . So only the people who are on the list may enter ." She told us that it was on the site . I said no miss it's not on the site at all and told her we drove 3 hours to come see judys house etc.. all she had to say was sorry . I was so upset . She said if we looked at it on our mobile phones that it's not on there . Well I did end up looking at it on my laptop and there was still nothing about no Halloween party on the Judy Garland museum site AT ALL ... ugh ... kinda shot down my whole weekend in a way . The birthplace home looks like any farmhouse from that era. Nice plaques but I literally made it through in 15 minutes. The biggest disappoint was the gift shop. No Christmas ornaments that were shaped like the ruby slippers (I think Smithsonian has them) and no T-Shirts. I repeat. No fun and clever T-Shirts. I bought zero items. read more

My wife was very excited about this museum because she loves Judy Garland and the Wizard of Oz. My daughter was excited because she likes shiny red shoes. Two very different reasons but the results were the same. They both loved the place!! I was expecting the museum to be rinky dink and lame but while it is still sort of rinky dink it was definitely not lame. The restored childhood home of Judy Garland was awesome and informative. There was a room full of Wizard of Oz memorabilia including Lincoln's carriage which was featured in the movie, a pair of ruby slippers, and one of the dresses Dorothy wore in the movie. There was a Children's Discovery museum which was REALLY great for the kids. My Daughter cried when it was time to leave. There was also a doll collection which my wife and daughter both enjoyed. I give The Judy Garland Museum 4 Doubledays because I was impressed with what they had to offer and it was a pleasant surprise. I definitely recommend this to anyone passing through or staying in Grand Rapids, MN. read more

Pathetic. Doesn't even deserve one star. I think if Judy garland herself could see this place, she would run for the hills. Overpriced to walk through a Judy garland museum that takes literally 5 minutes to go through. They lost the real slippers of hers, and replaced them with a replica. Overall, I'll never step inside their again. I'm a theatre geek which really saddens me. This museum for me doesn't put this town on the map. Although it's great for children, for adults it's boring. Love you Judy Garland may you rest in peace, this museum doesn't do justice for the work you have done. read more

Nicely done hometown museum honoring a local girl who made the big time! Great for fans, movie buffs, and anyone interested in early Twentieth Century life. There's a children's discovery center in addition to the galleries devoted to The Wizard of Oz, to Judy Garland's career, to her family's entertainment careers, and the lovingly restored house where she got her start in life and in show business. Very glad we made the detour! read more
