My dress was too small when I purchased it (off the rack) and Julia was able to let the dress out so that you can't even tell that anything was done to it. I wish I could rate Julia 6 stars! I ended up at Julia's Alterations after a nightmare situation with another seamstress (Bridal Alterations by Anahit in Watertown). Anahit hemmed too much off the bottom of my dress (see attached photos). I was in desperate need of serious alterations work and only had one month before my wedding. Julia and her daughter welcomed me with open arms and made me feel right at home. They comforted me and told me they would have no problems fixing my dress. They magically added two inches of material to my dress to get it looking back to normal. I was so worried there would be seams and I was not sure how lace material could be added to look like it was always there. Julia did a phenomenal job - her work was truly remarkable and the photos speak for themselves. Julia also corrected many other areas of my dress so it fit like a glove. The first seamstress was completely done with alterations yet so much additional work was needed to bring in the bust area, fix the shoulder straps, take in the back, etc. Julia truly loves what she does and is passionate about her work. She has a true eye for detail and treats every bride as if they were her daughter. She was so wonderful to work with and I would highly recommend Julia to anyone in need of bridal alterations. She went above and beyond even adding a zipper to the inner layer of my dress so I could step into it rather than having to pull the dress over my head and risk ruining my hair the day of the wedding (completely Julia's idea). Had an appointment for them to call me, they never did. Then I got a text (poor punctuation/typos which seemed careless and unprofessional) that said sorry they got busy and wasn't able to call me for my phone appointment because they had other people calling them etc. very bad first impression. Then they suggested that I call them the next day. Absolutely not. The least they could have done was try and prove that they can keep an appointment and be on time to make it up, not put the responsibility on me. Not a good show of faith. My wedding gown was 59 years old and my granddaughter wanted to wear it on her wedding day with a few changes, cleaning, etc. We are in awe of the knowledge, professionalism and caring shown by both Julia and her daughter, Julianna, during this endeavor. Both women (mother and daughter) were very nice. The shop itself is cute. I took a bridesmaid dress in to get the shoulders taken in and asked for Julia's professional opinion on the waist and hips. She suggested they both needed to be taken in. She pinned me and it all felt good. The dress also had some draping in the front which looked "off" so Julia said she would do some stitch work to make it look better. Upon checking out, I was quite surprised at the cost - $120 (for a dress that cost me $80). But since I am not familiar with alterations and the cost involved, I went ahead with it, paid the $60 deposit and left with the feeling that if she could make it look amazing the price would be justified. At my second fitting a week later I was unable to zip the dress. Furthermore, the draping in the front has been completely reworked and the stitching was done very poorly. I was almost insulted when Julia told me that she took in as much as we had talked about a week earlier... insinuating that I had gotten 1/2 inch on each side bigger. I don't think so. She told me she would let the waist out back to its original size and would fix the draping stitches. Back for my third fitting the next night and I can now zip the dress, but the draping looks worse than when I first brought the dress in. I have to deal with it as the wedding is in two days. Upon cashing out, I requested that something be done about the price, since the waist was ultimately brought back to the same size. After a little back and forth, she agreed that I did not have to pay since I was unhappy. Overall, I think the dress was a bit beyond her skill level and the prices are just too much. The ladies at the shop were very nice. They worked quickly to get my dress done. In needed to be taken in everywhere and was a lot of work and the alterations were almost 4x the price of my wedding gown. I was shocked at the price but just chalked it up to another gigantic bridal expense. One of many. For appointments they were organized and timely. They had things done when they said they would. At the first meeting I stated that I wanted the dress shortened (a lot!), and the bodice to fit snug. She suggested having cups sewn into the gown or said I could get my own bra. I opted for the cups because I figured it would be a more tailored fit. At the second fitting the bodice of my dress was still way too big. Like, not even close to fitting. Of course, being a few weeks away from my wedding, I was nervous that it wouldn't fit. I told her my main concern with the dress was - I do NOT want to be pulling it up all day/night. My main concern, above all else, was not having to tug at my dress every 5 minutes and have people tell me to pull my dress up over and over again. I said "I'd rather it be too tight than too loose" and she replied "now that I know that, I will address it". At the last fitting it seemed like it fit but I'm sorry to say - I spent the whole damn day yanking at the dress and pulling it up and having my friends tell me to pull my dress up. I also had the photographer reminding me to pull it up every few minutes. Ugh. I loved the dress. The length was perfect. The bustle was flawless. Unfortunately for me, though, the one thing I was the most concerned about was a huge problem. I felt insecure the whole day being that because I had the cups sewn into the dress I wasn't wearing a bra and my dress was falling down all day. Even if I WAS wearing a bra, I would have felt insecure with my dress falling down. For an $800 alterations charge I really expected near perfection -- and if not that, at least a dress that would stay on my body. read more

I just picked up my dress from Julia's yesterday and I am so thrilled with the results! I am getting married in two weeks and cannot wait for our guests to see what great work they did altering it! I got my dress from Vows in Watertown; they don't have a seamstress , but they give all their customers a card with recommended seamstresses. I live and work in the Newton/Watertown/Arlington area and four of the five seamstresses listed are in that location. Julia's Alterations was the farthest, but when I looked at reviews online, theirs were by far the best. I called and they gave me an appointment with no issue whatsoever (I am getting married in June and this was mid-April...not a whole lot of time to work with!). The first fitting was quick and to the point--they understood EXACTLY what I wanted to have done. When I picked up my dress from Vows I was worried: the back buttons wouldn't come together and there was a seethrough section on each side of my torso that wasn't noticeable when I tried on dresses back in October and I wanted it covered up. When I went to Julia's they listened to me and showed me what they could do. I had a vision, they understood what that vision was, and they absolutely delivered. When I walked out I felt so much better about my dress and knew it was in good hands. When I went for my second fitting yesterday I couldn't have been happier with how my dress turned out. The seethrough portion was covered up beautifully while still staying true to the overall design of the dress. The buttons in the back were removed, and you can't even tell that they were there in the first place. The bustle is amazing! They gave me copies of a diagram to show where the buttons and string are so I can pass it around to the bridesmaids, and they took the time to go through the bustle with me and make sure I know how to do it so I can show everyone else. Before my first fitting I was so nervous with how my dress would look and if it would have the "wow factor" that I was looking for. Now, I am so happy with the results and want my wedding day to come right now so I can show everyone how amazing it looks! Their shop is impeccably clean and they are the sweetest people you could possible work with. Even if you are in the metro Boston area like myself, it is absolutely worth the drive to Northborough. I would recommend Julia's Alterations to anyone. I had a wonderful experience with Julia's alterations. They are professional and also make you feel like you're part of their family. I got my dress from brides across America which gives away used dresses to military families and first line workers and there were some stains on the dress. I did not notice them until after getting the dress home. When I went to Julia's for alterations they assured me it would be fine and they would get the stains out themselves. Not only did they fit my dress perfectly to me they completely cleaned the whole dress by hand, it looked better than ever by the time they had finished with it. I was the only non-local bridesmaid in my brother's wedding, so I had my measurements done at a local shop, after which I called my measurements into the shop that the other girls used. I thought measurements were universal, but somehow I ended up with a dress that was two sizes too small. I either needed to eat nothing for the next eight weeks or be blessed with a miracle. I got the latter when I found Julia's Alterations. She was able to get me into the shop very quickly and developed a plan to make the dress fit. I had a dress altered and it was picked up for me Friday for a wedding that same evening. The alterations were not done correctly and I was unable to wear the dress. The dress was falling off my shoulders and too long when I first brought it in. As it was the same day as the event there was no time for corrections. When I try it on now it is uncomfortably too tight and the straps still fall off my shoulders. I thought I paid for professional services and was very unhappy to not be able to wear this dress for the event, I cannot wear it at all in this condition. I paid a fair price for work that was done quickly for me (1 week), I paid $260 because the top had beading on it and there were two layers to be hemmed. However instead of adding a dart to bring the straps in the entire bodice of the dress was taken in, creating a too tight dress that just highlighted the issue. Even the armholes are too tight now! Additionally the little loops to clip your bra strap into were removed and thick pieces of plastic sticky stuff was added to the straps. Again effect was making the dress smaller and not addressing the issue. Very displeased. I have written to see how they will resolve this issue and update should I get a positive response. read more

I was very happy with the final product as well as all interactions I had with Julia. The work was great on my very particular fabric and lace was great too. I couldn't have imagined a better experience. Another place I talked to had told me the dress was too tight, my butt was too big and I needed to get another dress. I'm not kidding. I have no idea who thought it was ok to talk to a bride, or ANYONE like that. I'm a size 4-6 for a point of reference so I really don't know where her comment came from. Anyways Julia was great at getting the bodice/bust area with lace to fit me perfectly. She even matched one of the missing buttons. I saw Julia after buying my dress down the street at Giggi's Bridal Boutique. She worked with me on my wedding gown, my mother on her Mother of the Bride dress and my sister on her bridesmaid dress. Everything came out beautifully! She was very efficient in making sure the timing was correct so it would all be ready for the wedding. We had cups put in all our dress, hemming of the bottoms, the tops taken in and she put a bustle on my dress. In my bustle, she even sewed in a back up button so if the other one snapped during my reception, it could easily be put back up. The dresses looked stunning and perfectly fit! The zipper was broken and many beads were missing. I had my wedding dress altered here and I am so pleased with my experience! Julia was professional and accommodating! She was very patient with me while I debated how I wanted my dress to be bustled. She really took the time to listen to my concerns and needs. She even made a bow tie for my cat from the extra fabric I had from my sash! I took my wedding dress here. It was a strapless dress and a bit on the heavier side, but Julia said it wouldn't be an issue to get it to fit. I told her that my number one concern was that it fit and I didn't have to pull and tug on it to keep it in place. I originally brought it in in July for the October wedding. After the first fitting, I was a bit concerned because it still didn't fit be in the chest and it slipped down when I moved. I voiced my concerns and she said she would make some adjustments and it would fit right at the next fitting. I went in for the second fitting one month before the wedding. When I tried on the dress, it was really tight in my rib cage yet it still slipped down when I moved, to the point where I felt really insecure and indecent. The way it slipped down also created the very unattractive skin bulge that happens when something is too tight. I told her that this still didn't fit and we needed to fix it. She said that this was as good as it was going to get and if I felt uncomfortable the only solution was to add straps to the dress. The gown was designed to be strapless and the idea of adding spaghetti straps to the gown made me sick. Julia then went further and said it was my 34 B chest and small waist that was the reason the dress didn't fit. She said my chest was not big enough to hold up the dress. She tried to make me take the dress with me at that point. I was upset and unsure of what to do (add straps or not) but I knew I wasn't happy so I left the shop and told her I would call her with my decision on the straps the next day. I called her the next day after speaking with my mother and told her that I really thought we should continue to work to alter the dress to keep it strapless. Julia refused to continue to work on the dress. She said it I wasn't going to agree to straps, she was done working on it altogether. She said she would refund some of my money and I could come in and pick up the dress the next business day. We hung up. She called me back ten minutes later and said she had just gotten off the phone with her lawyer, and that she was entitled to all the money I had paid (I had paid more than the 50% deposit) and she was not going to refund anything. This was less than 30 days before my wedding. I did pick up the dress, she did not refund any of my money, and I haven't spoken with her since. I was incredibly lucky enough to find a seamstress to fix my dress. Thank goodness Julia had left enough seam allowance that a competent seamstress could fix it. My lifesaver ended up letting the dress back out in the rib cage, took it in through my waist, and added a waist stay. And my dress fit beautifully when the new seamstress was done. And she charged me a fraction of what Julia did when she almost destroyed my dress. read more

My experience with Julia's alterations was wonderful. I had only two weeks to get my gown altered for my stepson's wedding and it was a complex job, since it had to be taken in at the waist and there were a lot of sequins in the bodice. When I first went to Julia's I was very pleased with her manner and pricing (it was only going to cost about $450.00 for me to have my wedding dress altered due to only needing minor changes). At my second fitting I asked to have the hips taken in a little bit more, the hem shortened and the bustle added. The new cost of the alterations was not made clear. When I went to go pick up my wedding gown the hips were not perfect and I was alarmed at my new alteration cost. I was now paying $900.00 for my alterations. I know wedding dress alterations can be expensive but this seemed outrageous to me. I had sent all my bridesmaids to her, and they also complained about her costs, especially for some who only needed some slight hem work done. I wish she had made me more aware of what the new cost was. I left her store in shock and complete disappointment that my dress was not perfect and that I paid such an outrageous fee. read more
