Nice little library in the downtown area of Juneau. There is free wifi which is great if you do not have data. There is a section for kids and it's cordoned off. Adults can only enter if they are bringing children to the area. That's really good for safety measures and peace of mind for other parents or guardians. There are tables and chairs lining the windows which offer a view of the mountains and downtown. There's also an "Internet cafe" which is a room where you can make calls or talk in it. It was pretty quiet when we were there so I'm not sure if anyone would actually want strangers to overhear your private conversations in there. Washroom is also clean here. read more

The Juneau Public Libraries are a department of the City and Borough of Juneau. The Juneau Public Libraries have three branches: the downtown Juneau Public Library (located atop the Marine Parking Garage on the waterfront), the Mendenhall Valley Public Library (located in Dimond Park) and the Douglas Public Library (located in the Douglas Community Building, a shared facility with the Fire Department). Library staff offices are located at the downtown branch. The Juneau Public Libraries are members of the Alaska Library Catalog, a consortium of 87 public, academic, special, and school libraries that serves 92% of the population of Alaska and shares 3.2 million library materials.  A card obtained at any of these facilities will allow you to check out materials at all facilities.  Several, such as the Sealaska Heritage Institute and Alaska State Historical Collections, are non-circulating research libraries. read more

I don't know what it is about Southeast Alaska (SE AK) and beautiful libraries with gorgeous views but...I like it. I came here looking for a place to hang out without the pressure of paying money for stuff. (sidebar: they really should have special rates at hotels for people that just need 6 hours to shower and take a nap but don't need to stay overnight) What I got was bigass windows with blustery sea-to-summit views, and blisteringly fast internet. there are lots of places to sit and read and study, with incredible views. They even have computers with headphones you can use if you don't have your own. My only criticism is the staff seem pretty grumpy. When I came in, I made eye contact and said "good morning" and I just got a blank stare with no verbal acknowledgement. Oh well, ain't nobody gonna steal my sunshine! read more

Are you a resident of the Last Frontier in Juneau? If so, I hope you have visited this beautiful gem. I have spoken to the librarian about qualifications of obtaining a library card and he was very helpful in explaining different types of "library cards" people can obtain if they are not a resident of Juneau. First, he said people who work in cruise ships are able to get a summer library card. It has an expiration date so from my understanding, you can renew it again if you still work on a cruise ship. Non-residents can obtain a temporary library card which is good for ten days (please double check with the librarians) and has a fee. If you are visiting, all the resources are available, you just can't check them out. You can also ask the librarian for the Wifi Code if you need access to the internet. What I also love about this branch are the Memory Kits! If you are a caregiver for someone who has a disability that impacts their memory, then I highly reccommend looking into checking out a memory kit. Inside there a mulitple copies of a book, digital resources (eg. DVDs), essential oils, puzzles, etc. The contents dffer though follow a similar pattern. The librarian also explained to me a new program they are launching which brings books to people in more rural/remote areas that are unable to access a library! On a rainy day, there's no place as welcomed as an Alaskan library... they are open late, Juneau's has a beautiful spot at the top of the parking garage right on the wharf, so you can see the ships coming and going, even if it's cold, windy, and foggy outside, like it was on this visit.  They are very friendly to travelers, and the seating, facing the windows is comfortable and a great rest stop.  Lots of books to browse, especially on Alaska, and of course, the local newspapers for all the Alaskan towns as well as the National news.  They have computer access and fast wi fi (only an hour without a library card, which is unfortunate), The location is a bit hard to find if you are on foot... down past all the jewelry/gold shops... but glad to find it. The walk from "the old town to the cruise terminals was interesting just by itself. read more

Hands down most beautiful views from a library ever. There are huge windows overlooking waterfalls and mountains with plenty of seating and tables. My family and enjoyed a long afternoon here after needing to check out of our Airbnb. They have fast free Wi-if, as well as offer free desktop use for an hour. read more

This is a beautiful library surrounded by nice views of downtown Juneau. The staff are warm and welcoming - they do a great job helping locals and travelers alike. The library is tidy and equipped with computers that makes internet access and printing easy. I can't speak on their reading selection, but this is certainly a nice place to come to if you need somewhere quiet to work. read more

The public library in any place is a reflection of the community tax dollars that support them. This is a nice facility located on the 2nd floor, on top of a public parking garage. Coming here, able to use their free wi-fi in a fairly comfortable setting with an AC outlet close by is nice. Unfortunately, alot of people wants to do the same thing, and while it's free, it's frustratingly slow with 5 Mb/sec speed shared with everyone else with a single router in the middle of the room. Increasing the transmission power signal to maximum and decreasing the refresh rate to minimum will boost the router's performance, but with data capped at 5 Mb/sec, the bottleneck is the bandwidth. It's sometimes fast, frequently slow and also comes up with connection errors, depending on the number of users at the moment. I spoke with one of the librarians, and hopefully they'll be able to resolve the speed bottleneck issue by the end of the year 2012. Nice clean facility, but not an extensive DVD collection. read more

Internet SUCKS! Had only a few hours to upload some video footage for my work, and their WiFi kept crapping out and was painfully horribly wretchedly slow. I'm leaving in frustration and would GLADLY pay for a decent internet connection in this town, but don't know where to find one. Thanks for completely wasting and ruining my time in Juneau! ps Took the tram up Mount Roberts, and the WiFi up there is wicked fast, so kill two birds with one stone and go up there instead. $30, but worth it. read more

We're back again and it's just as wonderful as I remembered. There's a cool exhibit as you enter, highlighting accomplished women. It warmed my heart. We left our computer on the ship, so I'm using their computer. I have an hour's use. The internet is fast and reliable. Such a pleasure after being completely unable to connect while on the ship. I love the views from the windows. It's so open and spacious. The bathrooms are clean and functional. read more

I have lived in a lot of cities and while this set of libraries isn't as huge as some, I like the fact that I can find books from the 40's and 50's that I read as a kid. The staff is delightful and they do alot of things with the local school kids. The only thing bad is during the summer when the cruise ships come in, is that it is impossible to be able to use the internet because all of the ships passengers are using them. Other than that it is great. read more
