Lisa was my trainer from 1993 until she moved away from San Francisco a few months ago. She is incredibly talented and knowledgeable. She is also personable and fun. Lisa knows how to balance strength-building with injury prevention--she teaches strict adherence to form. Over the years, my goals changed and Lisa always worked with me to tailor my workouts. Lisa takes lifelong learning very seriously and she has applied this to her training approach. She has become very skilled in working with and understanding the needs of aging bodies. She became a certified coach and uses what she learned to motivate her clients. One of the great things about Lisa is that she practices what she preaches. She keeps herself in great shape and never asks her clients to do anything that she hasn't already tried (and perfected). Lisa started off as my mom's trainer, then she started training both my mom and my dad (after my dad found out how great she was), then she started training me. She is now a close family friend--instead of discredit this review, though, I see it as evidence of how great it is to train with Lisa. Yes, she's a great trainer: she's ridic experienced, kind, tough, creative and fun. You can tell she knows way more than she needs to know about how your bod works. Lisa was my trainer for three years in Oakland, and I totally miss her now! Before I started working with Lisa, I'd go to crowded classes--I never knew if I was really lifting or moving correctly, the instructors never walked around the class to check, and I always had a feeling that I was an accident waiting to happen. Once I started working with Lisa, I knew I had the personalized attention that I needed to get fit and avoid injuries. Each session was unique and tailored to my specific strengths and weaknesses. Lisa really knows the ins and outs of the gym and every machine there, and on the other side, she is tuned in to the physiology of the human body. She pushed me and definitely helped me to get stronger and more stretched. I could definitely see and feel the difference over the years. Also, she's fun and easy to work with. After she announced that she was leaving the Bay Area for Palm Springs, she really helped me to understand the different machines and how to set them up for myself and how to create my own workout routines. The best trainer I've ever had, and I've seen dozens over the last decade. Highly recommended. I've trained with Lisa for several years now, sometimes at Golds SOMA and sometimes at my house. Either way she is fantastic. Here's why: 1. She always checks in to see how I am feeling and tailors my workouts to my needs that day. She is very receptive to what is happening in my body now. 2. She pushes me just hard enough to make my muscles feel really pumped but she never hurts me. 3. She is a very present person who isn't spacing out or looking around, she is really with you and exploring your body and its potentials. 4. She knows so many different and wonderful exercises that I am constantly surprised and engaged. She is especially good with dynamic exercises that work several places at once, sometimes with balances thrown in so that my core is also working. 5. I wish I had a before and after photo. In 4 months of working out with her I have lost 15 pounds and, more importantly, several dress sizes, without really trying, other than just showing up to our workouts. 6. She is super experienced. I can relax when I am with her because she has been doing this over half her life and deeply understands how bodies function best. 7. I starting working out with Lisa over 20 years ago. Over the years I started a business and stopped going to the gym for awhile. I came back to another gym and worked out with other trainers, then found out that Lisa was at SF Fitness Gym on Brannon. I was never impressed by other trainers as I am by Lisa. She continues to study and learn new approaches and methodologies. She is knowledgeable not only in strength training but also yoga, core strength, and life coaching and uses all these modalities in her work. One year ago, I felt stagnate with my energy, mood, enthusiasm and physical maintenance. I have always been a healthy eater and outdoorsman with my partner, but my overall fitness felt very limited and not whole body strength. I felt like I was aging, not in a good way. I hired Lisa and my life changed. She gave me the flexibility to train where and with what equipment seemed right for me. I purchased a TRX strap system, several dumbbells, elastic straps and a medicine ball and set it up in my garage (patio in winter). Then we started slow and steady to build strength, balance and endurance. Lisa drugged me with her enthusiasm, incredible knowledge and steady hand and I am a Lisa addict. I have old friends telling me how amazing I look which is only a bonus to how I feel and live my life now. i've worked with Lisa since 1988 until she relocated to Palm Spring just recently. She provided invaluable insight, advice and knowledge to me as we trained 2-3 times a week over the last nearly three decades. Lisa has experience and education in many forms of fitness and this was reflected in my ever-varying workouts; we did functional training, core workouts, balance, strength and aerobic exercises. If you want to feel improvements in strength, balance, and self confidence, Lisa Schoenberg is a first class ticket. She will first want to know your personal goal. Mine was the ability to pass a balance test. With Lisa's training I accomplished it my first month. Working out with her is a joy, as while you are weight training she will explain the benefit of each move you make. She observes you very closely, as on my first day, the moment I began struggling, she stopped me and asked what I was feeling. When I told her that my leg hurt, she wanted to know exactly where and asked me to point to the exact area that hurt. She then pleasingly told me that it was the exact muscle we were working on. Through her experience and accomplishments you gain true motivation and get seriously inspired. I trained with Lisa for four Glorious years! I can't express how amazing she is. I sought her out. I had noticed her at Golds gym for years and then built up the courage to ask her if she'd take me on as a client. I had always admired her, small but very built person, I noticed her training people of all sizes. I'm a petit woman and wanted to strengthen up my core and entire body. I've had back problems and injuries in the past due to repetitive stress due to my service industry job. Lisa always had fresh ideas around the injuries and how to work around them. I have never been in such great shape as when I trained with Lisa! I had guns (my arms) for the gun show, as the saying goes. As the other reviewers mentioned, she's always present, never spacing out, asks questions, gave me great information on nutrition and was always brushing up on new techniques and equipment. I appreciate that she continually educated herself on new and better ways to work out. Whether it was TRX , dumbbells, barbells or using the balls for a fresh work I always came out feeling invigorated. Now I have to work out on my own and I still incorporate what I learned from her. I've had to pause with Lisa as the economy took a nose dive but when things get better I'll be looking her up again!!
