This is a place where you can admire an art display made of tires, a sowing machine powered by a bicycle, a moving dining table powered by six bicycles and talk to the artist. At first I thought they only offered classes for children, but I looked through their website and there it was, classes for adults! I was hyped! The projects looked so cute. I wanted to learn the basics. Woodworking is pretty fun, but you also have to be patient. Blue, the instructor, was super awesome! She gave a lot of suggestions and was supportive in whatever you wanted to create (as long as they had the tools and materials available). They offer the class inside one of their school buses (very spacious, looks really cool). I would go again if my schedule permitted it.

But I wanted a jump start into it of a class in a group setting. I love love love that this place as a non-profit, offers free movement healing classes for TBI, stroke, Down syndrome, and Parkinson's. A class is $14, well worth it - seriously, take my money. A package deal is 70ish? And there's currently a Yelp $200 for $240 deal for the well committed. Their website is useful and informative as to their very accommodating schedule (another reason I decided to stop by here). You can park at a nearby garage structure for 90 minutes free and classes are an hour average so it works out perfectly. They are diagonally across from Panache Bridal next to a parking lot (not to be confused by a parking structure). I got here a bit late (15 minutes) but was welcomed warmly...some dance studios like this one in mid-Wilshire I used to go to for modern can get pretty serious about it (for a brief/awkward moment anyway). They were super chill the whole time. The instructor's energy is laid back, informative, open, encouraging and vibrant. Expressionism is healing. Give this place a shot. Will definitely make time to be back, occasionally, when the mood strikes again.

The orientation is about 30 minutes, after that the fun begins! During the AM shift, I helped load grocery carts filled with food for families and organized a cabinet. I also helped caseworkers with interpreting in Mandarin in person and over the phone. Definitely a great experience and great organization to help. They are truly helping those in need. Free street parking. About a 10 minutes walk from Allen station. Remember to wear sneakers and comfy clothes.

My kids and I have volunteered for many years at this food bank. It is a lifeline for so many…read morepeople in need in our community. It's incredible how much food they distribute and how many families they help. I see on their social media how they give holiday gifts to children in need, help with back to school supplies and vouchers, dental cleanings, vet clinics, mobile showers and so much more. Many of the people who work here are volunteers, and even the paid staff don't earn much - I know of some who have been past clients wanting to give back. I have seen the faces of gratitude of some of the clients who come here for help. Whenever I come here I have a renewed sense of faith in human kindness and generosity, seeing the impact this organization has and the generosity of so many volunteers and donors, trying to help those who need it most. I'm sad reading the negative review. I also imagine people are quicker to complain on yelp even for free services than to show their appreciation. I also understand it must be truly frustrating for people who are hungry and/or struggling to survive to have patience when things don't go smoothly as life is already so difficult to bear. But I truly believe that the people working at Foothill Unity are doing their best within the constraints or limited resources they have and that they are also dealing with tough and stressful situations all day. I think it is unrealistic to expect a charity that is dependent on volunteers and has limited resources to be a well-oiled machine. In my interactions with those who work there, I believe they are doing the best they can, and I am inspired by all the amazing things they do.

Speaking of which, organizations that do…read morereally well in doing so much good for the community should receive more of the recognition and support they deserve! :) The nonprofit is the base that hosts volunteer activities initiated by different groups all over the city. It is the hub from which various other nonprofits voice and turn the wheels of their projects. Even a recent Yelp Beach Cleanup event, associated with Heal the Bay, required volunteers to sign up first with LA Works. For MLK's Day, LA Works planned a morning at Rosemont Elementary where hundreds of people, most of them a part of their employer company (ex. Target, Home Depot, JP Morgan, Accenture), showed up to help revitalize the campus. A radio station came prepared with dancing and music to jumpstart the day. Volunteers were assigned letters and numbers, then told to report to their assigned tasks. It was all very organized and efficient. They cleaned the computer labs, classrooms, storage room and rec room. Adults and kids alike transformed drab brown walls into a playground of rainbows and sunshine. Snacks, juice and water were available throughout the event. Following, food trucks showed up, some of which were either prepaid by the organization or declined to charge. You can become a volunteer by signing up for an account - and then going through their available search options for projects you would be interested in. I like looking through their calendar for a big picture of their activities. Some projects, like anything that has to do with animals, are hot and fill up faster than others. Clicking on the individual project listing will provide a detailed description and, more importantly, the geographical location/zip code. Trust me, the easier it is to get there, the more available and willing you are to enjoy the event, maybe even on a weekly basis.

It was easy to sign up for both events; the respective coordinators got back to me quickly, and I had a wonderful time.
