The Brevard Zoo Linear Park is literally what it sounds like. This is a park that shares some land…read morewith the Brevard Zoo, but is not part of the business. The park is public and free. It is truly linear in that it is a singular trail that's extends to the Pineda Causeway and back. The park trail has historical information along the way, as well as information about local wildlife. The trail takes you through classic Florida wetlands. It is quite popular and frequented by walkers, cyclists, and joggers. It is about 2.5 miles one-way, so about 5 miles round trip. Be prepared to have sun exposure. Also, it seems like a popular trail for dogs and their parents. There are benches interspersed throughout the trail and garbage cans for convenience. Today I walked the 5-mile journey and I will be back. It was a gorgeous escape from city life. The parking was convenient and it really is free. If you plan to do the full length of the trail, bring water. It can get hot because of the direct sunlight.

Taylor Park is a 3.06 acre neighborhood park in Rockledge, the oldest city in Brevard County. At…read morethe entrance to the park is an arched entranceway that reads "This park is presented to the city of Rockledge, Florida A.D. 1928 - by - Albert Armor Taylor and Grace Webster Crockett Taylor, his wife, in memory of their beloved parents, Frederick Fitch Taylor and Henrietta Powell Taylor of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Antoinette Millett Crockett of Portland, Maine" The park sits on a hill that slopes down to the entrance. There are parking spots along the perimeter of the park. Beautiful old oak trees provide shade. Amenities include a pavilion, picnic tables, benches, a playground, and 9 station exercise trail along a paved walkway. This park is the perfect neighborhood destination for play, picnics, and exercise. What I found most interesting about the park is that the Taylors are still here! There is a mausoleum in the back of Taylor Park. The Taylor's settled in the east central Florida area in 1895 and they had two sons: Albert Armer Taylor, Jr and Frederick Fitch. Sadly, both passed away as infants and they are laid to rest here with their parents. Albert and Grace Taylor were instrumental to the development of Brevard County. Albert Taylor was one of the founders of the Brevard County State Bank at Delannoy and Harrison streets in Cocoa in 1889. He was president of the bank until 1906 when he resigned and made a lot of money in citrus and real estate. He was the first president of the Cocoa Town Council and was elected mayor in 1898. Grace was one of New York City's first stenographers before her marriage and she was an accomplished poet. Their home was on the site of today's Cocoa Public Library between Delannoy and the Indian River. One of their favorite hobbies was studying the night sky with a telescope. Engraved on their tomb is the following: "We have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night." You can learn more about the Taylor's from a display just inside the entrance to the Brevard Museum in Cocoa. Grace in particular was interested in preserving the history and natural beauty of the area. She passed away on December 27, 1945 and upon her death she left a bequest specifically for the development of a museum to to preserve the history of pioneer life in Brevard County, In 1975, the Albert and Grace Taylor addition to the Brevard Museum was created with funds from the Grace Webster Taylor Testamentary Trust. Many of Grace Taylor's personal effects are on exhibit. The mausoleum is hidden by a sensory garden. The plants were chosen for their fragrance, tactile qualities, and beauty. If you didn't know the grave was here you wouldn't notice it. It is surrounded by a locked gate. I loved discovering this bit of interesting history in this park. The Taylor's are still keeping watch over the community they loved.

While not a bad size, I find the offerings of this park to be a bit limited. They have a baseball…read morefield, a few tennis courts, a basketball courts, a community center and a few cement picnic tables. They also have a pavilion and a small children's play area. It is not a bad destination if you're going to play one of the sports on one of the fields, but if you want to walk around and enjoy nature, this is not the place for you. All in all, I will give this park three stars. It is nothing special, however, if you were into sports, the sporting fields work pretty nice. It also looks relatively well maintained.

Little kids playground has wooden mulch. Big kids playground has rubberized mulch. Sports fields: at least three softball or baseball fields and a couple of tennis courts. Bathrooms right next to small parking lot. Swings: big kids swings next to toddler swings on the little kids playground. Big kids swings next to handicap swing on big kids playground. Big pavilion close to Playgrounds. Holds eight picnic tables and has large built-in Grill. Small beach volleyball court. Lots of field space to run in. Playgrounds located away from the road. Most of the Sports fields are located near the street. A few are located far from the street on the other side of the playground.

This is a cute little plaza located in front of the City Hall. There are a few benches to sit on…read moreand relax there and it is home to a bike sharing kiosk. I saw a few alternately housed individuals hanging out in the park while I was there, but they where just chilling. The main attraction of this park and what drew me in was the small space shuttle replica there that represents the city's deep roots with the space program. It provides for a nice photo op and is defienlety attention grabbing. It is a small area and has a brick walkway that leads to the front door of the City Hall. The plaza is relatively well maintained and is somewhat a chill peaceful spot, even though it is right off of the busy A1A. There is a lot right next to the plaza that you can park and enjoy it. That is where I parked. I do not see this as a major destination spot, but more of a spot for employees and visitors of city hall to hang out. It's is also a nice spot to take advantage of the photo op that I mentioned. Outside of that I do not see people spending much time here.

The playground is nice and simple. Small but with all the good stuff. Slides and swings. The park is very shaded which is nice for kids. Walking through the park it is pretty with all the trees. There are bathrooms, tables and a covered pavilion. Perfect for a small birthday party. The highlight of this park is the dock overlooking the Indian River. The sunsets are gorgeous. If you come at the right time you can even see dolphins and mullet jumping in the air. It's a cool site. Overall awesome little park.

In…read more2000 the park had its named changed to MIA/POW Park to honor prisoners of war, veterans, and those missing in action. The Veterans Council P.O.W. Chapter represented 60 organizations that urged the commissioners to rename the park to honor what took place during the wars and to recognize the cruel treatment suffered by prisoners of war. POW/MIA Park is one of several waterfront parks along this stretch of the Indian River. What makes this 4.58 acre park stand out is that it has a two lane boat ramp for motorized vessels. There is also a kayak and canoe launch. Near the boat ramp is restrooms. On the other side of the park is a community center with a meeting rent that can be rented for private events. Shoreline fishing is permitted in the park. This park is primarily for the boaters and anglers although anyone would enjoy the tranquil water view. Other waterfront parks in the area offer picnic and playground and amenities.

In 1999 the park was named Hoo-Hoo Park from a fraternal order of lumbermen called Hoo Hoo International that contributed to the building of the park's boardwalk. A Sheriff's Office sting operation arrested 32 men on sex charges. Over 300 people were charged with improper sexual activities during the 10 years the park was open. Brevard County closed the park and worked on rebranding it for the community with a new name, Riverwalk Family Park. They added a nature center and invested $275,000 in park improvements. Today this a destination anyone who loves nature would be happy to visit. I started out in the charming nature center where I met Tommy, Pringles, and Chips, the resident turtles who swam right up to the glass to say hi. The nature center has displays about the animals and plants that live near the Indian River, maps and information on other local nature parks, and it also offers nature programs. On the day I visited they had binoculars for use in the park and free water color painting set up. Behind the nature center is a 915 foot boardwalk that takes you to the Indian River Lagoon. Although it is shorter compared to other nature boardwalks in Brevard County, it is the perfect length for the same children who would enjoy the nature center. In 2016 Riverwalk Park received a $20,000 grant from the National Recreation and Park Association. They used the money to build a Nature Explore Classroom set between the trees of the nature preserve. The interactive play zones radiate around a central grassy area with an old tree stump as the focal point. Some of the areas are a water play area, plants and play, a deck for tree forts, and musical instruments. The park also has a picnic pavilion, restrooms, and a butterfly garden.

Excellent little boardwalk path. Fun to enjoy when no one else is there…read more I love the unique rock formations by the water, though I was surprised how short the walk is. Wish the boarded path would lead over the ravine and into a nice picnic/play area. I like how some of the plants along the walk are marked. Did not appreciate the cigarette butts by the water. This isn't the park's fault, but all it takes is one negligent person to destroy everything.
