You could spend a week here without leaving campus and be perfectly happy, though its central location to both Lagos and Faro allows for day trips to visit the towns and partake in their outdoor experiences (kayaking, hiking, etc.). Rooms are large and clean, and restaurant options are myriad. There are so many things on offer, from high-end seafood and sushi to Indian cuisine. All are good, though none are truly great. Sunsets should be experienced from the Champaign Bar, overlooking the cliffs and sea below. Those looking for exercise will be impressed with the well-apportioned gym. Note that it seemed crowded throughout our 5-day resort stay. The resort also boasts plenty of leisure and athletic facilities. The 9-hole golf course is sufficiently challenging and includes a hole with a cliff-to-cliff canyon carry. Clubs and golf shoes (required) and available for rent. The driving range was somehow closed before our tee time because of its proximity to the soccer (football) fields and upcoming soccer (football) practice. These professional fields are prominently featured on the resort's website, but were used by a professional club and off-limits to resorts guests during my stay. (Note to the resort: do not trumpet facilities that are off-limits). The resort also includes tennis courts (two clay) and a basketball court. The only real drawback to the resort is that it is rotten with kids, from which adults simply cannot escape. My advice to the resort would be to designate at least one of the pools or restaurants as "adults only." As things currently stand, there is no place to escape the crying and enjoy a mid-day catnap.

The highlight was dining at Michelin-stared Ocean. However, the other on-site restaurants are wonderful as well. Vila Vita is a true resort in that you don't really need to leave the premises during your stay. Not only do they have a variety of high end dining options (make reservations in advance!) but they have three pools, a private beach, a mini golf course, tennis, a spa and more. One of the coolest things about staying at Vila Vita is it never felt crowded. In fact, we assumed it wasn't a busy season for the resort, just due to a lack of guests walking around but the staff informed us they were at 95% capacity! Point being, it feels exclusive and there are never crowds. There are paths to walk the grounds and explore. During an exploration we discovered Vila Vita employs Vito, a hawk, who patrols the premises to keep seagulls and other birds from annoying guests and stealing food. Beach access is also very cool, it's a steep, adventurous climb down but once you arrive at the secluded beach area, the views and experience are worth the trip.

Service was spectacular: exceedingly professional and attentive, but also friendly and caring - and patient for a group with 7 adults and 4 kids. Facilities are plentiful, from tennis to golf to the pools to a kids camp to bars to the beach (with its chilly, but rejuvenating May surf). I know this is strange to say, but an all black hallway and then blood red accents is just weird. Check the pics. * Electricity would turn off when you left the room. Charging electronics and keeping the room cool didn't happen * Bit of an older crowd (avg age 50+) The Bad: * The food. Wow was this poor. The pool bar had some of the worst food of my vacation.. and I got a salad and a turkey wrap aka things that are tough to fudge up. Breakfast (included with my room) was OK, but things were grossly undercooked and the most plentiful items were lunch meats (weird). Lunch/dinner should be a hard pass unless you enjoy a nice mix of bland meats and rice * No free water anywhere. Not in the lobby, gym, by the pool... Nowhere. Dropping 3-5 euro each time you want water is nuts. Considering they warn you not to drink the tap water, there should be other options available besides bottled water. The beer and wine is actually cheaper * No small towels available at/for the gym. Though there's a big sign on the wall to wipe down after you use a machine, I was instructed to bring down a room towel to do so. Double weird considering the gym is in the spa, which is FULL of towels. * The mini bar shouldn't be called a bar. It's a little fridge with 3 waters in it. So, it's a mixed bag here. Many of the problems above are easy to fix, so maybe changes will be made soon. Overall, come here if you have a family and want an all-inclusive experience in the area and don't really care to try the local cuisine. Don't come here as a solo traveler who likes to explore.

Our room was very comfortable, and they have the best smelling soaps of any hotel I have ever been to! Kind of a citrus smell to them. I took a couple home with me! The restaurant was just ok.... it took forever to get our food, and it was only so-so.. but you don't usually eat the food at a hotel restaurant. We were just too tired to go elsewhere. The furniture and sculptures throughout the building were amazing, and the staff was very friendly. We hired a local photographer to take photos of us near the hotel... In addition to the historic building there are 24 rooms in a much newer wing just to the west and below and in back of the pool. Our room was 202 on the lower level and had a partial view of the ocean. What I liked: -whimsical nautical color scheme in the comfy modern room that was up to date in every way from power outlets to fixtures -outstanding service culture and helpful young man, Goncealo Rico who checked us in and showed us around and helped us out during our stay-even arranged to go up to the secret rooftop for a peak-great view -sumptuous breakfast buffet with all the typical European items and eggs cooked to order -views from the nice pool-the hotel is right in the center above the beach on a tall cliff -beach access from the hotel is very easy and the spa provides you with a beach bag to use during your visit with towels and water. -immaculate grounds and facilities-rooms very clean as well. -nice quiet A/C- got room nice and cool for sleeping What surprised/disappointed me given the caliber (and price) of the property and the newness of our room: -size of the shower-while the bath is a reasonable size despite a modest room size, the narrow tub/shower with half wall of glass just isn't my favorite making it not only tricky to get clean but also hard to keep from splashing water all over the bathroom floor-unfortunately these are common throughout Europe -not a fan of the €4 potato chips and €10 bottles of designer water-so many high-end places have eliminated these silly expenses-wish they would too.
