Neuro-Divergent kids need not apply…read more If I were rating Element on the Karate program alone they would get five stars: the instructors are fantastic. They are able to run diverse classes where participants are different ages and abilities, and somehow still make themselves available before or after class if anyone needs to talk to them. The other instructors could learn a lot from the Karate instructors. My 9 year old child has ADHD and she normally brings a ton of energy and enthusiasm to class. She also bring defiance and outbursts if she doesn't understand something or is frustrated. Apparently these outbursts were happening frequently in classes other than Karate, but I had no idea until one by one the other instructors kicked her out of their classes. When 5 Elements became Element the new ownership heavily discouraged parents from remaining on the premises so I was not in the habit of staying during class. There was no way for me to know my daughter's behaviour was becoming a bigger and bigger problem until I was told she was not welcome in first Jujitsu, then Boxing and finally Muay Thai. After the first ban we did a round of occupational therapy to help my daughter control her outbursts and have been practising the techniques ever since. I thought all was well until the second two bans were issued. Again, I did not know her behaviour was still a problem because nobody told me. By the time the instructors bothered to talk to me they were so upset that they were unwilling to work together and find a solution; they instead chose to ban my daughter. Since most of the classes were no longer available to my daughter we decided to end her membership. Technically they should have charged me, since we had committed to a year, but they waived the fees without a fight. This all went down right around billing time, but they also refunded the money for the upcoming month even though it should have been too late. This could be interpreted either as excellent customer service or the desire to get my daughter out of the dojo before I had the chance to tell the other parents how we were treated. If you are an adult, or if your child is only interested in Karate, you will do fine here. If you have an ND child interested in a variety of disciplines I would recommend you keep looking.

Despite the decent environment, I feel the staff are quite lazy and sometimes very hard to work with. Yesterday I was with my friends and we were in the Gymnasium playing some basketball. Badminton was allowed in the Gymnasium due to the fact that it was an "Open Gym." Me and my friends went the first time to ask the staff if we could have the badminton nets set up on half the side of the gym and the other side for basketball. The staff said that they would send the DM or Duty Manager down to set it up later. We were acceptable and patient while waiting in the Gymnasium. After maybe 15 minutes or so I went to ask again, this time they said it would be another 15 minutes before the DM would arrive to set up Badminton. I thanked the staff and returned to the Gymnasium after waiting a total of 30 minutes before asking again. I asked the staff at the counter and they proceeded to go inside and ask for a request for badminton. They came out and informed me the last time that the DM would be coming down "now." Of course that was false making me and my friends wait in the Gym for up to an hour, peering outside of the Gymnasium constantly, checking if the DM was going to arrive. Soon however the DM did arrive more than an hour later, she informed us that "The court was too full" and how "It would be too crowded having 13 people on one side of the court." I was acceptable and the DM informed us that she would be back in 30 minutes to check if it was more empty. However the statement of the Gymnasium being too crowded brought up a significant memory not a couple of weeks ago when a full family wanted to play badminton on one half of the court while basketball was on the other half. Apparently 13 was too full but I swear I definitely saw 21 people on one half playing basketball. We were not able to play basketball because of the people that wanted to play badminton. Yet the staff does not set up badminton when we ask but when a full family apparently comes with badminton rackets, they squeeze as many people as possible to the other side of the court. I was quite disappointed but not mad however. Now, going back to how lazy the employees and staff are, this event completely explains how bad it really is at Melcor. Of course, me and my friends went to play more basketball and played for up to 2 hours and the DM never really came back "after 30 minutes" to check if the courts were empty again. At this point we gave up going up to ask again and went up to workout. We later left the YMCA after working out and that was pretty much how I spent a day where I planned to be playing some Badminton into doing almost and only some of what I have planned going to the YMCA. Very Dissapointed Melcor, one star rating.

The staff are all awesome people who do their best. They are easy to get along with. They are all five stars. The only reason I am docking a star is because of the process for customers. One cannot book a court on the weekend because they rarely answer the phone. I would much prefer that they have a receptionist there all weekend every weekend.

Do not go here. Do not send your kids here. It is not safe. The head said it was my fault for going too hard. I calmly and quietly spoke to him again later and explained to him that I was really going easy and pointed out that I had significant bruises while my partner did not. I also raised that it was a safety concern that he was blaming me and not taking me seriously. I was then suspended for bringing up my safety concerns. I expected to get bruises. I was even proud to get bruises. I did not expect to be suspended for mentioning that something was unsafe.

We have been at the Lycee for years and have two kids in early/middle school. We have been so impressed with how the school has handled the recent events. Without skipping a beat our kids are now being taught online and are learning at a rapid pace. The teachers we have had are all incredible. I will say that the academic standards are extremely high and your child will be expected to work hard. Monitoring in the school playgrounds could be improved but this past year I've seen an improvement with programs brought in to aid the teachers and kids on this topic. To be pragmatic we are lucky to have so many great schools in Calgary and not all of them will be a good fit for any given child. I do know two families that have moved their kids to a different school but have returned. That's a good indication of the quality of our school.

The school is a small knit community, where everyone seems familiar at least. And very…read moreinternational, there are people from all over the world, which is nice for the kids, who become part of a global community. It's very academic oriented. It's part of a net of schools worldwide, which makes it easy to transfer to another lycee if you are moving overseas. Also, older kids can spend a year abroad and study the same curriculum. What made me decide was the curriculum, the class sizes, and the flip program. My children started in grades 3 and 5 and had no prior french! We took advantage of that, and so glad we didn't wait longer. Grade 5 is the last grade the intensive program is offered. We are in our third year, and I must say I couldn't be happier, the teachers are great, I love the atmosphere, for the parents as well, and my children work hard to do their best and are happy.

Hi, former graduate here! I thought that I should add my two cents to this yelp page…read more MVA was an amazing place to learn and connect. I attended from grade 2 - 12 and enjoyed every minute of it. The academic integrity of this school is above any other that I know of, and the teachers are incredibly passionate about their jobs. I wasn't a role model student, I needed a little bit more help than some, but the teachers would always put in the extra time to help me and to make sure that I understood the material. My colleagues that left MVA for another high school have often told me that the switch wasn't worth it because they were receiving a lower grade of education in trade of a bigger school with my more kids. If it weren't for the extra care and attention I received while I was attending school, I would likely not be studying for my B.Sc Psyc at UVic today. MVA helped build a solid foundation for my education, and as a result have opened many doors for me that may not have been available otherwise. Though I am bias in my opinion, obviously, it is only because I did go to the school for over a decade; I experienced first hand the quality and care that all the teachers (including the administration, as they often switch between teaching and managing) give to their students. If I could go back in time and choose differently, I wouldn't. I love this school, and if I have children in the future, MVA is my first choice. 5/5 - Would attend again

As an ESL student, I often needed extra help from the teachers due to my English level at the time, the teachers always stayed after school to assist me to go over the materials I needed help with. Because the class size was relatively small compared to public high schools, the teachers were able to ensure each one of their students was getting the best education they deserved. As an international student who came to Canada alone, I needed help not only with school but also with things in life in Calgary, i.e. finding a homestay family to stay with, extending my study permit and having someone there for me to talk to when I needed. I couldn't thank Mrs. P and Mrs S enough for all they've done for me throughout my journey here. They've gone above and beyond for what their responsibilities were as my high school principals. They took care of me like I was one of their children. My parents to this day still talk about them and thank them for taking such a good care of me. As cheesy as it may sound, MVA to me was not only my high school, but also my home. The help I received from MVA did not stop after I graduated from the school. After I graduated from MVA, I was accepted to University of Calgary. I was able to come back to school and asked the teachers to help me to go over my papers when I needed help. I graduated from the university 4 years later, and have been working for an oil and gas company since. Without the education and the help I received from MVA, I wouldn't be where I am today. Yelp only allows me to give 5 stars, I give MVA 1,000,000 stars!!
