The schedule has a well-attended 6 a.m. class for local commuters (it's one of the few times I know I can get on the mat) as well as competition classes and extra-curricular strength training and stretching classes. The school has cultivated a great community that supports all levels (and age groups) of jiu jitsu from high-level competitors to novices just finding the sport. Adam and Karen, the owners and head coaches, provide excellent instruction and truly care about their students. When I competed in a tournament in Manhattan, Adam went with me to coach from the rail. I was the only student competing that day and he still made time, away from his own family and commitments, to head into the city. Last, the kids program is great. While I can imagine its upsetting to sign up new kids and lose them, the level of conversation we had was unreal. He basically wanted me to force them to come "I'm the parent". Quite honestly I'm not going to pay for a service that my boys don't want to do and kids are way too over scheduled these days. I was very honest about that. His response to me was that "You knew they were doing these other activities when you signed them up" and "had he known I would just quit like this he never would have accepted me into the program." Im of the mindset that kids should finish what they started but I certainly wasn't going to bring my kids there to finish out the month even though we had to pay for it. Had to give thirty days notice - So we are stuck paying for a service for the following month we won't use - which we agreed to but it would have been nice if they only charged for one child instead of two. Especially since they are getting paid and not giving a service at all. Very disappointed.

They teach kids about confidence and discipline and history. There are always enough sensei per class to give each student personal attention. It's always amazing to see these students compete at Koei Kan's annual Tai Kai tournament where all of North America's Koei Kan schools compete at all ages. Many of the Sensei started with Koei Kan when they themselves were kids, and many others discovered this karate system as adults. They all volunteer their time teaching because of their love for karate and dedication to this dojo.

I had decided to set up personal training sessions with a trainer named Ricky, I trusted him and my mistake was not asking questions when we sat down to sign the contract, however, as an employee, he should've made sure I understood what I was signing - he did not explain what his rates were, nor how much I'd be billed for the month, so they billed me $212! I had already moved and canceled my membership with them, but they still billed my account. The person that reached out to me to explain the situation was nice, but no resolution was given - I'm now 45 minutes from Spa23, my money was never refunded, and credits for a different service can't be given. I know people who had gone to Spa23 and ended up leaving, both trainers and members, due to their dislike of it and how much of a "chain management" it had, but I truly didn't think I'd experience that firsthand.

NOPE. Still a significant difference in temperature when you go into the cardio area, probably 20 to 25 degrees warmer than everywhere else.. Its almost tropical. It stinks because rest of gym is quite comfortable, nice and cool. Why wouldn't they invest in some ceiling fans to circulate the air at least?? at the rates they charge? when I joined my current gym I made a comment about the temps there as well... about a week or 2 later, they went and installed fans in every corner of the gym to circulate the air. I was impressed. My current gym is much smaller, their fees are more than half of Spa 23, and they are 24/7 which is huge for me, and its nice and cool. Their treadmills even have little fans built in which are pretty strong. So I will not be returning here... too bad, they're equipment is pretty impressive.
