What an amazing spot! I'd venture so far to say that this was my favorite part of the Road to Hana experience. The beach itself is quite secluded; you have to park in a quiet part of town near Hana, then find the trail at the edge of a park, then walk roughly 15 minutes to get to the beach itself. And the trail has quite a few obstacles, so be prepared. The beach itself is so cool, there's a natural rock formation that creates a "pool" for everyone to enjoy. All the benefits of the Pacific without as much concern for safety since the rocks create a barrier. A must-see on the road to Hana, definitely one of our top spots throughout the trip. Since this is in a residential area, please prioritize respect to the locals and don't park your oversized Jeep too obnoxiously. The way down is through crossing the grass field to the left of the Hana School/Youth Center. Do NOT cross private property to get to the beach. The path isn't formally paved and a bit slippery, so I recommend NOT bringing your whole beach getup (chair, umbrella, etc.)-- keep it minimal bc you'll likely need your hands to balance. My bf and I just wore backpacks with our towels in them and were totally fine. The beach itself is incredible; a rich terracotta shore with clear waters, sheltered by the cliff and trees. It feels like escaping into a hidden oasis. We spent an hour swimming and skipping rocks, even playing with tropical fish that chased our feet. Bring a pair of goggles! NOTE: Cliffside pathway to the beach is pretty worn but decently stable. Not accessible by wheelchair. Nothing too dangerous if you've ever hiked on trails like Big Sur before, but would recommend hiking sandals as some parts can be a little crumbly. I am laughing at my 10 years ago self. The hike is not so treacherous to me anymore and I am entertained at myself for once thinking so. Since then I have been many more places and done many more hikes, lots that were far more dangerous than this one. This is still just as beautiful as I remember it. Once you finally get through that long trip to Hana, you should check this beach out. It's a 10 minute hike, although it can be a bit tricky. It's a narrow, sometimes slippery path uphill. The beauty of the cliff's edge and water below is breathtaking, it's can be a little scary but very doable. Once you make it to the beach itself, the water is cool and clear. Bring a dive mask, you can snorkel and see some cool fish. The sand isn't your powdery Caribbean sand, it's small rocks so bring water shoes or proper shoes. We went early (8am) before the table was set up (we didn't realized it was actually closed due to someone falling until we came out). The walk is doable but a lot of slick spots and open cliffs for potential falls. Highly recommend if you can safely get back through the trail! read more

This was hands down my favorite stop on the Road to Hana. We actually stumbled upon it by accident. It's not on all of the popular lists of things to see on the Road to Hana. We took a wrong turn and my mom happened to read about this in her guide book just in time. Park on the side of the road where it dead ends right by the school. It's not 100% clear where the trail starts. Walk through the large grassy area and you'll get to a group of trees and see a better trail. We walked on the wrong side of the fence which was not a trail. If you zoom in on Google maps, the trail is there and will lead you right to the red sand beach. It's maybe half a mile walk and pretty easy. You'll turn the corner and spectacular views await. This is the first time I have seen red sand. Pair it with the turquoise color of the ocean water here and it's absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, since there are so many stops along the Road to Hana, we didn't have a lot of time to spend here. I'd stay in Hana next time and spend way more time here and at the black sand beach at the state park. Compared to most of the other stops, this one wasn't very crowded. There were only a handful of other people here. We even got to see a seal sun bathing! If you have to narrow down your list for the Road to Hana, make sure this is on it! read more

We took our entire family to Maui and of course we had to take the road to Hana. We wanted to see the black sand and red sand beaches. It was breath taking and peaceful. It took us 2.5 hours to drive there. After 30-mins on the drive we lost our phone reception for the rest of the trip, we enjoyed this for the kids . The road to Hana is windy and scary at some points because it becomes a one man road. Imagine a line of cars coming from both directions and someone has to move over or be courteous. The drive is gorgeous however. Every 5 miles you are greeted with something new, a waterfall, large trees or animal flock. The black sand and red sand were hard to find without many signs. However, Hana is a small rural town of 4,500 population. It is very remote and intriguing to see life be simple and calm. You should stop at the vendors and support. We got a fresh coconut to drink the warm tasty coconut water. We ended up making it to Kīkō Beach. It was beautiful. This was the best beach we found on the island. The red sand were more like rocks and the black sand we seen from a far. We were very happy with the road to Hana. It was the best 5 hour ride of my life, thus far. read more

When reaching the town of Hana, most people drive in to eat and then keep going to complete the Road to Hana. As there are no signs to guide you to Red Sand Beach aka. Kaihalulu Beach, this hidden gem is often missed. Located just past the Thai restaurant you reach a community center and a dead end facing a private property gate. Park where you can and you'll begin your journey through an unmarked path which is about a 15 mins trail along a cliff side that is steep and narrow. I recommend wearing trail shoes however I did see people in their "slippahs" doing it. Once you reach the end you are greeted by a small secluded beach which feels like your in a dream. The hill covering this beach is rich in iron and is why the beach's sand is such a deep red. The tide is partially shielded by an offshore reef which makes snorkeling amazing. Being one of the few Red Sand Beaches in the world, I highly recommend checking this place out! read more

It's a short easy hike to it and slightly steep at the end but totally doable. The hike was worth it. This is the place to go to! It's secluded, a small "hike" to get to and the water is warm. There is also a rock area that you could swim out to and jump into the ocean. It's only about 7 feet high and the water is 6 feet deep so highly suggest not diving. Bring your snorkel gear, drinks, and food to make it a hang out day. I would suggest some type of water shoes as the bottom is rough getting into at first. Also-nudists could be around! read more

Getting here was a hassle, but it was SO worth it! I suggest parking at the beach park or in the grass parking up the hill, but do not park in front of the school or on the street. There's no parking signs and you'll get ticketed. Parking is difficult for this area. When we arrived, the park was open just before the school with field parking there. We parked the car there, and then walked the rest of the way. We could see other people making their way to the beach which was a good thing considering we probably wouldn't have been able to figure it out on our own as the entrance is behind a school down a random path/trail. As stating in other reviews, there are signs that say this is a dangerous trail and the owner is not liable for any accidents. We didn't have any difficultly with the trail or hike. It is pretty short overall. At one point, the trail is a bit steep going up so we started running and got up pretty much the entire way with not as much effort as walking would've taken. I would HIGHLY suggest wearing reef shoes. The rocks on the beach are very rough and big and without shoes it hurts your feet BAD! We had flip flops on and our feet ached for a while after. The sand sinks in near the ocean and the rocks are hard on your feet. There was only one person I saw get in the water on the very right side of the beach near where the trail comes in. You can't see what is in the water so I'm not sure how far I would go in, but it sure is a beautiful sight. The cliffs with their red color coming down, the blue-turquoise water, and the view is stunning. If you have chairs, you could carry them down and sit. As pretty as the sand is, it is more rocky than sandy. There are no restrooms in the area. The trail can get slick from the rain, but like I said we didn't have any difficulties when we were there. read more

Its a scary walk on a narrow path .. on a side of a mountain. Did i mention i'm scared of heights. Amazing. Highly recommended. I was able to traverse the trail with very little difficulty. The trail was somewhat dry, though it was after a rain so definitely still moist and slippery in parts. As a whole, it was not difficult at all though you need to be careful. I see people taking much bigger risks along national park hikes all the time. This is not ADA-compliant--it's a hike along a beach cliff for goodness sake. There are no trespassing signs at the beginning. A bit further in, it seems the owners resigned themselves to simply posting signs saying they aren't responsible for any injury. Is that invitation?? The path gets narrow in a couple spots so take your time or let people pass if you're feeling pressured to plow through. These are often near areas with what are clearly recent rock falls, so I didn't linger long in those sections. I passed a couple likely in their upper 70's who stopped me to chat. The lady said she was actually disappointed after hearing from everyone about how difficult the hike was. She felt it was much easier than what she was told to expect. Several people carried infants on their backs (rather surprising to me). Only one nude guy, so that was rather disappointing. Loads of people in flip flops, though I would recommend something a bit more supportive. The beach itself is sheltered, peculiar, and special. I went during pretty turbulent weather so it was overcast and gusty. I still had an amazing time experiencing something that I will hold dear in my memory chest. Kai- ocean. Halulu- To roar, thunder; roar explosion, loud noise, racket. Our kūpuna (ancestors) were intentional when giving names . . . so you already know that this place is storied. I would NEVER COME HERE if the weather wasn't right. If you do decide to come, park at the Hāna School and follow the steady stream of people to the right (towards the ocean) and across the grassy field. . . you'll pass a sign that says "The Trail is Dangerous- Land is subject to landslides. Landowner will not be liable for any injury to any person." The trail will take you down first, and then back up, and around the mountain where you will make your descent down the edge of a cliff that resembles an ant trail. I have fallen on this trail (luckily not the one on the edge of the cliff) because of carelessness on my part and the loose rocks and gravel that created a slip and slide. So take your time. Better to be safe then . . . end up in the hospital. Unfortunately, this beach is famous for being a nude beach. So be ready to see things that you cannot forget! Sit and examine the ocean before you get in. What is it doing? How are the tides moving? If you have sensitive feet you will have a hell of a time getting out. The snorkeling here is amazing and I have also seen locals climb the rock formation in the middle and jump off. Overall, this beach is just breathtaking. . . who knew red sand even existed? read more

Off the beaten path and certainly worth the stop. Parking was kinda tough, but found something after a couple minutes. Careful here, I guess the cops will ticket in this area. Follow the directions of an app guide to get there or just follow the other tourists you see heading there. It's a quick 10 minute hike up, around, and down to the beach. Not too bad, but parts are certainly a bit sketch. Maybe leave the kids on this one. It's a nude beach for one, and it could be a bit dangerous for them on the hike. I saw a little girl crying while hiking out as she lost her footing. Sand is a dark brownish red. Not a massive beach, but of decent size. Large rocks as you get into the water. Would recommend water shoes as the current and waves could shift you around some. I really wish I'd brought snorkel gear or at least goggles as I wanted to see if there were hidden rocks, how deep it was, if there was coral, etc. Without this info, I never felt comfortable in the water. There are rocks further out that protect you from the really big waves. Past these rocks, the waves are massive! I saw a young couple somehow climb onto one of these rocks (super sketchy) and dive off the top of it. No thank you. To me, another must stop on the road to Hana. read more

The Red Sand Beach was definitely one of the most beautiful sights on my Maui trip, which is saying a lot since the whole island is amazing! We visited the Red Sand Beach as part of our Road to Hana day trip. We were on the most west side of Maui at Lahaina so it was quite a drive to do in one day. We could only fit in a couple of things and it took the entire day but it was definitely worth it. This beach was our 2nd stop. We parked and didn't really know where to go at first, but you walk across a grassy field and walk down the dirt path. There are warning signs of landslides which scared me at first, but seeing people going and coming back eased my worries. It was a relatively easy walk there until the very end where it's a bit scarier and easy to slip, but if you go slow and bend your knees for balance you'll be fine. I saw a lot of people wearing flip flops and I wore teva sandals and it was very doable. Once you get down it's a pretty small beach and it's nice because it feels secluded. There were a couple of dogs and the crowd felt relatively more laid back (might have been due to the fact that there were no loud kids or families like on most beaches). There are some big rocks blocking off the big waves, so the immediate area of water is easy to swim in and explore. It was pretty cloudy from the sand and current so not the best snorkeling experience, though I did see some fish. The only real negative to this beach was that the sand hurt! The sand is coarse and the rocks are quite big, definitely got a couple scratches. Overall this place was one of the highlights of not only the Road to Hana, but my entire Maui trip. I would definitely visit this beach again if I get the chance to. read more

Hands down my favorite beach on the island! Accessing this beach can be tricky. It is off a street that dead ends to a gated hotel but you must crossing a grassy field at the local community center. I definitely would not recommend visiting this beach after dark! We had an app tour that warned us of how precarious it can be to get to the water. As much as I hate to say it, I would not recommend wearing flip flops to get to this beach. You can and I did. But you'll be slipping and sliding just like me. I had to grab on to some of the vegetation to stable myself. You've been warned! Now that I've scared you, let's talk about the good stuff! The beach is essentially a protected cove. There are massive rocks that create a pool area where swimmers are protected from the waves. You still get crashing waves, they just hit the rocks instead of the sand. Beneath the water the ground is covered with rocks and pebbles. If you have those walking water shoes, bring 'em! Because of the difficulty to access this beach, it is far less crowded than some of the others along The road to Hana. If you have a lunch I highly recommend a picnic here! This was our last stop before turning back towards Paia. Although we didn't make it to the Seven Sacred Pools, this pool was just as special. Having only seen pink, black and white sand beaches, adding red to my collection was just as sacred. read more

This beach is beautiful. Red sand is more like red pebbles. They hurt. I would keep your shoes on unless you have thick soles. This beach took a little effort to find but it was worth it. There are some rock formation that blocks off some of the waves. I wish I checked out the bottom of the water to see if there anything worth exploring. There were a few people who were nude. Favorite part of the Road to Hana this time around (having done the drive once before a few years back)! The beach is like nothing else you'll see, is a very distinct color and experience, and was fairly empty by the time we got there (around 4pm). When you get to the dead end, make sure you turn your car around and park facing the way you came. We saw people being ticketed when we parked, and we made sure to ask how to park properly. You will go straight past the gate to the path, which you can see starting just outside the trees. You will walk through about 50 yards of tall grass before the path clears up, and then you will walk up and down along a packed mud trail along the coast for about 10 minutes before reaching the beach. We wore sneakers and were glad we did - if you do want to wear sandals, that's your call, but know that the path does go up and down in a steep manner, and we took care in walking even with sneakers on, in dry sunny weather. The beach itself is gorgeous - the waves splash in a lively manner against the beach, which some people waded in to experience. Another group of people just laid on towels, relaxing. I had a lot of fun watching my hubby skip rocks :) My pictures can't do it justice - I could have taken pictures there all day. Do yourself a favor and save time at the end of Road to Hana to hang out here. read more

Not often does a beach receive 5 stars from me. I've heard of this place for several years now and only recently experienced it. PARKING: This is the biggest challenge to me. There is a short and narrow dead end road near the former Hana School on which to park if you want a close stall. If not, there are grassy shoulders near the Hana Ballpark which is not that much further down the road. ACCESS: I'm sure you've heard or read stories about the access trail. They are all true. Two signs posted before the start of the trail warns that the landowner will not be responsible for injuries incurred. The grassy overgrowth leads out to the cliffside. It's a good drop to the water below should you slip, with nothing to grab onto either. While you probably won't die from the fall, I can predict scrapes, cuts and possible severe injuries, along with a very difficult time trying to get back up the steep hill which is laden with loose cinders and impossible-to-gain-traction pine needles. That said, the foot trail itself is fairly smooth, hilly, very narrow at many points, and hugs the mountain like the Hana Highway you just rode in on. Leave the kids, elderly, and clumsy folks at home. Once you're near the end of the trail, the views from the top are gorgeous. The ocean is a deep blue, rough, and unforgiving. The cliffs are tall, vertically steep, and prominent. The feeling is almost like stepping foot onto The Beach, in that Leo DiCaprio movie, along with the accompanying hippy revelers. THE BEACH: It's not sand, but red and black lava cinders. Sitting and laying on a towel was manageable, and on the plus side, you are not a sand magnet after swimming. The beach area is fairly spacious even for its small square footage, mainly due to low foot traffic. Its very private as you're at the bottom of and surrounded by an extinct volcanic cone. There are a few trees that provide shade. Naturally there are zero comfort facilities. There are two cove-like areas that are great for swimming/dipping that are protected from the extremely rough ocean by an isthmus-like lava rock jetty. The water... Man, this is the selling point of this place! It was amazingly clean, crisp, and refreshing. I honestly have never swam at a beach with water that felt so pure, it was like I was in the middle of the Pacific, far away from any and all pollutants. The currents are so strong and severe, it constantly pushes and pulls the water from the beach like a natural filter and pumping system. All other beaches pale in comparison, period. Another plus, I had AT&T reception so I could share my experience immediately. OVERALL: Dangerous access, killer views, fresh spring-like ocean waters. read more

I don't think I look like Kim Novak. Considering I am a stocky Japanese-American man who has eaten a few more super-burritos than I care to admit, I don't see the resemblance. Yet, here I was on Maui, and there was a small woman recreating the final scene in "Vertigo" by trying to push me off the precarious edge of a steep cliff on the way to the hidden Red Sand Beach. The trail is so narrow that you are constantly in danger of aggressive tourists trudging in the opposite direction and shoving you out of the way and potentially into the drink. I suppose that's why they don't openly advertise coming here. But it is well worth the trouble as hopefully my pictures will show you a stunning little enclave of a beach in a brilliant reddish hue. It's on the opposite side of Ka'uiki Head from Hana Bay. Because it's not marked and even has a "No Trespassing" sign, not many people show up (except the nudists, of course) even though it's in all the tour books. It only takes about five minutes to get there. You get there by driving on the main drag in Hana, Uakea. At the end is the Hotel Hana Maui. Don't park in their parking lot...they give you small-mouth and a ticket. Make a U-turn and try to park on the street. Then you get out of the car and double-back past the lawn area. You'll see an opening in the grassy area and some semblance of a trail including a confusing fork. Just keep going to your left past the big tree. You'll walk on a narrow footpath with the loose cinders crumbling under your feet. Don't panic until you see tourists like that small woman. You'll go over a slight hill that looks like the entrance of Shangri-La and then see a rocky point. You're not done. You keep going on the trail to the left, and voila! It's well worth the slight trek. But shhhh...let's just keep it our secret. read more

If MSN published that articles on the Top10 Most-Secluded Beaches before I went to Maui, I wouldn't be wandering around like a dork looking for the "RED SAND BEACH". But.. Yeah.. It was an adventure locating it. The actual name of this beach is KAIHALULU RED SAND BEACH. DIRECTIONS: - Nearest Cross Street: UAKEA and HAUOLI - Go pass cementary, and look for the community center at the end of the road - Go to the parking lot of the community center. Look behind bushes and tall grass for small trails. I found 2 in the middle of the parking lot. PARKING: Didn't saw any parking spaces, but luckily there was a local baseball game going on that day, and everyone was just illegally parked at the park's lawn. WARNING: Don't recommend flip flops here, as the dirt are loose. There are several ways to get down, I am a girl and it wasn't that big of a challenge for me. Just for common sense and look for a longer route if the one in front of you is too challenging. THOUGHTS: Definitely a secluded beach. I asked the locals for directions to the beach and they were clueless as to what I was looking for. The "Red Sand Beach" is not fine sand that I imagine. It's more like a mixture of red and black pebbles. Nevertheless, it was fun seeking this out as part of my ROAD TO HANA adventure. read more

This beach is near actually in Hana and near the end of the "road to Hana" (Theres still more to see past Hana, actually). When dealing with sites on the road to Hana, prioritize what you want to see first and make the effort to get there early! The beach itself is slightly difficult to find, thanks to a resort blocking an obvious path to it. Our GPS led us to a dead end on a small street and we got a bit turned around. But don't fret! It's actually telling you the best spot! Near the dead end there's a small gate to a grassy area. Walk through the grassy area and you'll see a small path to hike through. There will a few "danger" signs but neither of us thought it was that hard. I would recommend wearing a pair of shoes as there will be some parts where you will have to climb. Upon getting to the end, you'll be rewarded with a tiny little secluded beach! Because you followed my advice and got there early, it will be empty! So take all your instagram pics and get it out of your system. After that relax and lay around in the beach for a while! Unfortunately the currents are strong and there are a lots of rocks, so I don't recommend swimming or snorkeling there. read more

Is there a way to give 10 stars?? This place is otherworldly. Its magical and breathe taking. Getting to it is a struggle. You have to follow your guide app to a place to park right next to the community center and facing the private resort gate. It's a small one lane road. Then you have to wall towards the resort, almost to the gate, look left, and then walk through the open field/patch of grass to a small opening which is a path down to the trail. The trail is super steep. Definitely something you wont be able to do if you cannot complete a very narrow very uphill walk with very little space between the path and the side of the cliff. Literally inches. But once you get down to the little spot, you want to stay there all day and just be in the atmosphere. Its calm and the grandeur of the rock and cove itself keeps everyone pretty quiet. This is a bucket list thing. Huge must if you are on the road to hana. read more

This was one of my wife and I's favorite stops on our honeymoon! You take a quick hike down a dirt trail winding around a ridge to get to the secluded red beach! The sand is a lot more grainy than beaches in other parts of the world due to the fairly recent volcanic history of Hawaii, so it's cool to see when the stages of post-eruption turn the cooled lava into different colors (see nearby Black Sand Beach for the black variety!). This is not the ideal beach to surf as the waves are small and there are a lot of reefs but swimming (especially near the shore) is awesome! Lots of opportunities to snorkel. When we went, it wasn't crowded at all, which was super nice. Not sure though if that was due to the weather (it was about to rain) or if that's how it normally is. If you have any trouble finding parking, remember to look over by the school across from the baseball field. Have fun! read more

GPS will take you to the dead end road and you'll see a park area to your left. There is no beach access if you walk to the end of the road. I was lucky to overhear someone asking how to get down to the beach. Walk through the park and to your right, there's a hidden trail head. The trail can get very narrow, steep for some so I suggest water shoes/ trail shoes with traction. There's gravel so you can slip. There's a bit of rocky downhill area to get down to the secluded Beach area. Definitely worth the short hike. read more

Absolutely amazing! This is a must see if you visit the island. So many stunning views. The rock formations and the mountains are beautiful, the water is so clear. Getting to the beach is sort of difficult. First off don't be confused when you get there. You have to park your vehicle on the street. The beginning of the trail is located at the end of the street near a dead end/gated entrance to a building. Go to the left of the gate in the middle of the lawn and you should see the trail. The trail is fairly steep and long. It is also pretty narrow with a steep drop off to the ocean and rocks below. BE CAREFUL. There was a lot of people when we visited today. Most were in and out fairly quick. After you get through the hike to get to the beach it is all worth it! read more

Found out about this beach by asking the barista at a local coffee spot what his best recommendation for a stop on the RTH was, and I'll say it was probably my favorite of the 5 or so stops we made. Other locals don't seem so open to tourists going here. I say this because when we stopped at a gas station less than a quarter mile away, I asked the attendant where the best place to park was and he said he had no idea. Yeah, sure. Anyway, a quick Google search later and we knew where to go (on the street outside of the community center, BTW). The hike isn't as bad as some people on here have made it sound. It isn't so much difficult as it is dangerous, but even at that wasn't too bad; there is a good stretch where you walk a narrow sand/gravel path that is on a very steep ridge directly down to the rocks and crashing waves. If you have any coordination and step carefully you'll be fine. Just probably not recommend for the very young or elderly. When you're walking the path you will think "there is no way that this leads to a beach", but just keep going. Eventually you come around a corner and you are looking down on a beautifully picturesque cove with the red sand beach that is protected by some large rocks. A short climb down and you are there. I almost forgot, don't attempt the hike with flip flops or bare feet - bring your sneakers and thank me later. We were there later on a Thursday afternoon and there were probably 20 others present, which still allowed us to be very comfortable and not too crowded at all. The lagoon is relatively calm and great for a dip. Overall it's just a great spot to chill and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. If you do the RTH and can make it the whole way, this is a must-stop. Enjoy it, but most importantly, as with pretty much everything else on Maui, be respectful of other people and the beautiful land itself. Don't drink out of glass, don't litter, if the property owner is there especially be respectful of him/her (pretty sure the path to get there is private land). read more
