This is a pretty easy hike with great payoff! It only takes about 2 hours, and you get to hike over a couple of bridges, through a bamboo forest, and end up at a gorgeous waterfall! I'm an athletic kinda girl, and I would say this trail is maybe a 2/5 in terms of difficulty. (I'd give it a 1, but it has some incline, so I gave it a 2.) My boyfriend is a homebody and rarely hikes, and he gave it a 3/5 in terms of difficulty. One thing to note: The drive to get here is a DOOZY. I did thee Road to Hana the last time I was in Maui, and it freaked me out so much that we tried going around the south side of the island this time. That was also very scary. Unless you are prepared for very narrow roads (I'm talking one lane with traffic going both ways) on a cliff, sometimes with drops straight into the ocean, don't do it. If you are okay with that, do the Road to Hana for the more scenic drive. The southern drive was less scenic, and probably just as scary. read more

Came back here 5 years after I went the 1st time and brought my 9 year old. He made it to the end and back. The trail didn't seem as magical, maintained or green as I remember the 1st time. Maybe a different time of year? More mosquitoes as well. Still, it was pleasant and glad we went. We saw a lot of people bringing infants in carriers and really small kids. This is a serious hike. I would say maybe 7 + in age if you are bringing kids. You may make it part of the way, but it will take you an hour to get to the bamboo forest at least and there are a lot of weird wide steps. Bring water, snacks, hiking stick and bug spray. read more

What a mesmerizingly beautiful hike! This trail was a major highlight of our trip to Maui -- we love showing off our pictures to our family and friends! If you're planning your day around this hike, my advice is to get there early. My husband and I left Kihei around 5:30 and drove on the Road to Hana (clockwise) to get to the visitor center before 8:30. This way, you'll avoid most of the traffic from tourists on the Road to Hana, and a morning hike is just so much more peaceful! Parking at the visitor center is $30 but this pass grants you access to all of Haleakala National Park for 3 days. Since we got there early, it was super easy to find a parking spot. The restrooms by the visitor center are clean and well-maintained, which was a big plus :) This hike is pretty easy with a slight incline, and there are numerous spots along the way to take a break and admire the wondrous works of nature. The bamboo forest is especially cool -- when the breeze comes you can hear the bamboo creak as it sways back and forth. All the greenery is so lush and the waterfall at the end is such a pretty sight. Both of us love hiking, and so took us about an hour and a half to get from the visitor center to the waterfall (including stops to take photos and take it all in), and less than an hour on the way back. Highly recommend driving the road to Hana on the east side of Maui to this trail. We googled the trail and were taken along the west side of the island- the back way to Hana. The road along the coast is pretty sketchy in some areas, especially in a non 4-wheel drive vehicle. The hike itself is moderate, out & back 4-5 miles total distance. The hike in is mostly uphill- there are many steps. The hike back is mostly downhill. There's a large banyan tree along the way, about a mile in a bamboo forest begins and you walk about a mile in it. The waterfall at the end is 400 feet and lovely. The trail is heavily trafficked- we didn't see much wildlife. Recommend sunscreen & bug spray. Also, entry is $30 and keep your receipt- it will also get you in to the Haleakala summit on the opposite end of the Haleakala National Park. read more

This is a great trail and hike to see two different waterfalls. About 2 miles in, 2 miles out. Some elevated climbs but not much really. The real chore is the 2 - 3 twisty windy at times one lane drive to and from the national park. Try to avoid getting caught driving back after dusk. read more

I really enjoyed this trail. There were quite a few stops with all different views to enjoy - waterfalls, banyan trees, bamboo forests! This trail is fairly easy (my entire family walked it in sandals...would I recommend tennis shoes? Yes. But it's doable if you didn't prepare!). I love that this trail is for everyone. You can walk however much of the route you'd like and turn around at any time. There's a huge waterfall at the end that was spectacular to see, but along the way there's just so many beautiful sights - it's worth checking out even if you don't walk the entire trail! Parking was fine when we went. Huge lot with quite a few open spaces. I'd recommend checking this beauty out! read more

Pipiwai Trail is one of the best hikes I have done in a long time! Located in the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park (what some people consider to be the end of the Road to Hana), it hadn't even been on our radar when we started the Road to Hana - we had initially planned on just doing the Seven Sacred Pools. After reading about how highly recommended this hike was, though, we knew we had to add it in last minute. This is a four-mile round-trip moderate hike that took us about 2 hours with stops to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. Trail is very well-maintained, so no questions about where to go and easy to walk on. This trail has everything - waterfalls, a bamboo forest, a banyan tree - all while hiking through a beautiful, lush rainforest. It's quite fun how much of nature is incorporated in this hike. We started this trail around 3pm, but had no problems finishing it before dark. Great tree cover and shade. Trail gets slipperier the closer you get to Waimoku Falls so just walk carefully. You'll reach Makahiku Falls - a 200 foot waterfall - about 0.5 miles into the hike. It's a bit of a distance away from where you stand, but still gorgeous. However, where this hike shines is with Waimoku Falls at the end of the hike - a 400 foot waterfall that you get to see up close. Words struggle to describe the true majesty of these falls - it is 100% worth the hike and so peaceful to sit on the rocks and take it all in. Make sure you plan ahead for this hike - I wouldn't be too concerned about having to finish this hike after dark. However, if you are driving back and don't want to do Hana Highway after dark, make sure to finish this hike in plenty of time to do the drive in daylight. While this part of the park is more remote, they still have a small visitor center with nice bathrooms and a water bottle refill station. The closest gas station, though, is in Hana so make sure you have enough gas. We visited both the Kīpahulu and Summit districts of Haleakalā, and the Pipiwai Trail w/ Waimoku Falls was one of my top two experiences in the park. This is a must-stop for your Haleakalā National Park and Road to Hana adventures. Hands down a wonderful hike worth the stop and the time. read more

Definitely get here early because it does get pretty crowded starting around 9/10am, even on a weekday. With that said, I'm so glad I had this place to myself most of the time! One way is around 2 miles with a lot to see along the way including a couple waterfalls, banyan tree, and a bamboo forest before reaching to the final waterfall. I love how lush and green everything is, but it also does get muddy. It's a slight uphill with a few sets of stairs in between. The last part of it before the final waterfall was lined with some wood panels so it was a flatter surface to walk on. Overall a perfect morning hike to enjoy nature and the scenery before heading back into the busy city. read more

We did the Haleakalā sunrise on Saturday of our trip. That national park pass is good for three days so if you decide to do the road to Hana and include this trail to see Waimoku Falls, you won't have to pay the additional fee to enter (we did road to Hana on Sunday, spent the night in Hana then did this Pipiwai Trai hike/falls on Monday). This is an easy trail, well maintained with lots of steps and can get slippery when it drizzles/rains so bring good shoes. The trail leads you to a big banyan tree and through a bamboo forest, so fun to hear the knocking of the bamboo trees against each other. Of course, there are lots of breathtaking spots for pictures. Bring bug spray as the spray we did at the car sweat off and the bugs were active. We started at 8am, had a 9 and 11 year old with us, but had to stop often as I threw out my back a couple days before. We finished the round trip hike to the the Waimoku and back by 2pm. We probably could have done the hike in 2 hours if I didn't have to stop so much because of my back. Wonderful trail, with a big Waimoku falls payoff at the end. So worth it. You may see wild animals like a pig, also saw a giant spider so watch out! Hike is about 2 miles each way to the waterfall there are some wild inclines. Definitely need good shoes or hiking shoes. Once you reach the viewpoint, you can walk pass the warning sign (At your discretion-you may get fined if you're caught) and be right under the waterfall. Be careful.. I saw giant rocks falling off the waterfall so probably not a good idea to be right under it! read more

This is an easy/moderate 4-mile round trip hike. The hike through the bamboo forest to Waimoku Falls is a trip highlight when we visit Hana. Some parts of the trail get pretty slick and it can be a bit uneven. Flash floods are possible so check weather if you know it's going to rain in the area. I've seen people in sandals to hiking shoes and I've always just used sneakers. Water, snack, and mosquito repellent are highly recommended. It is part of Haleakalā Volcano National Park. As such, there is an entrance fee. In our Hana 2021 visit we opted to buy the National Park Pass for $80 which can be used at any National Park like Yosemite for a year. There are four major highlights to see on this trail. Makahiku Falls which feels maybe halfway along the trails. The trail doesn't lead you to it but it is in view and beautiful. The giant banyan tree is a great photo opportunity and a good place to rest and snack/water up. It is so huge and just feels ancient. The bamboo forest is phenomenal. It gets so dense at times that it feels like dusk. If you are alone on the path pausing to just listen to the wind weave amongst the bamboo causing creaking and knocking is quite mesmerizing. This is actually my favorite part of the trail. Waimoku falls is the reward at the end of the trail. This 400 foot waterfall actually sneaks up on you due to the dense jungle. You hear it, maybe catch a glimpse of it if you're looking up through the tree line but for the most part you turn a corner and bam, waterfall. On our first visit 20+ years ago you could hike to the bottom of the falls and stand underneath. Well that is now considered dangerous as people have died due to rocks falling on them. So at the end of the trail you're also greeted with a "Do not pass this point" sign. So of course people still ignore it and find their way through to the waterfall basin. Not me, I got kids now. Your choice. We've done this hike three times now and it never ceases to amaze me. read more

Not as easy as some people say and I would designated a good chunk of your day for this activity unless you're staying in Hana. We paid $30 for a parking permit that was valid for three days for any attractions in the park. The road to Hana was a windy and ruthless one and this destination was towards the very end. During our drive to the entrance, we passed by a relatively large waterfall that permitted climbing and swimming. Honestly that was the perfect appetizer to what was coming. When we arrived at the spacious parking lot, we stopped by the averagely clean restrooms before our 3 hour trek. The trail branched out between a smaller one that led to the sacred pools and the longer one that led to the Waimoku Falls. Notably we traveled with a 7 year old and 55 year old so the trail was doable for a wide range of ages given that the adventure started early enough. Considering the doozy of a ride back from this park, I wouldn't start the trail past 2PM so the drive back wouldn't have to be in complete darkness. Water, hats, sunscreen, bug spray and athletic shoes were a must. Notable attractions included a massive banyan tree, smaller waterfalls, bamboo surrounded tunnel, and Waimoku Falls. There was also a fluctuating drizzle that dampened the ground beneath us. The first half of the trail was rockier with an incline. The roots from the trees made natural steps and there was less shade. The banyan tree was the first stop we made and was perfect for pictures. As we trudged along, we heard water flow and redirected from the main trail to see some of their smaller falls. As we crossed a bridge, we entered the shaded area surrounded by bamboo. While it was cooling, the rain really impacted this area, making the manmade steps slippery and ground muddy. We had a couple falls here. After another mile, we reached the final destination and ultimate waterfall: Waimoku Falls. We took photos next to the sign and then made our way back the same way we came. The natural scenery blew us away but the children were completely wiped out afterwards. Patience and determination will make this hike doable but this was the most energy intensive activity we did on the entire trip. read more

Pipiwai Trail is the primary activity and hike to do here in the Kipahulu (Coastal) District of Haleakala National Park. And...this Pipiwai Trail leads to beautiful and majestic Waimoku Falls! Yes Waimoku Falls! This waterfall at the end of the trail was simply stunning! Phenomenal! So...before mentioning Waimoku Falls...I'd like to provide a few details about this Pipiwai Trail... - In total, Pipiwai Trail is 4 miles roundtrip. It wasn't even really elevated either. I'd classify the hike as moderately difficulty. Though, for myself, I was so excited to be here at Haleakala National Park and to even just be stepping foot in Hawaii...I'd say my pace along the trail was pretty brisk. I was pumped up and ready to explore so it took me 45 minutes to arrive at Waimoku Falls. - When starting the hike...there's a signage board posted stating that this Pipiwai Trail cannot be started later than 3pm because it takes 2 - 3 hours to complete the trek and Park Services locks the gates to this Kipahulu District promptly at 5pm. My best advice...just arrive here in the morning time, lol. Also, you are prohibited from swimming at Waimoku Falls or in any of the streams along the way. - For the 2 miles in each direction, there'll be signs in terms of distances for eventually arriving at Waimoku Falls. - Along the way on this Pipiwai Trail...you're afforded some terrific moments walking through lush green vegetations...like a real rain forest. It was generally hot and humid outside, and it felt like I was transported far away from reality hiking in some lost tropical getaway. I was visiting in the middle of March 2022 and was definitely working up a good sweat. But...it felt great to hike deep within the forest ultimately all leading up to the grand moment...the 400-foot plunge of Waimoku Falls! - Also, on the hike towards Waimoku Falls, there's a sign mentioning that 1/2 mile into Pipiwai Trail you'll come upon Makahiku Falls Viewpoint...but because of the active growth of all the trees and bushes surrounding the overlook...you can't really view anything. This Makahiku Falls was totally obstructed unfortunately. - 1 mile into the hike you'll be immersed in the Bamboo Forest. This area was pretty scenic for being among that vintage, tropical setting. You'll also pass by a funky looking sort of bamboo tree. You can't miss it and people were stopping to take pictures of it. This tree was quite unique looking. The tree was the midpoint of the trail. - Finally, when at the falls...it was really wondrous to look at. This Waimoku Falls was the 2nd best waterfall I viewed during my time in Hawaii. The best was the behemoth of them all - Akaka Falls!...located on The Big Island. - Lastly, to access Pipiwai Trail you first have to enter the Kipahulu section of Haleakala NP and it was a $30 fee. Once you park your car in the lot, the trailhead is situated right beside the Visitors Center. Pipiwai Trail leading up to gorgeous Waimoku Falls is the heart and soul of this Kipahulu (Coastal) part of Haleakala NP. It's one of the big reasons why tourists make the difficult journey driving up and down winding Hana Highway road. And overall...when here on the island of Maui, this Pipiwai hike to Waimoku Falls is simply a MUST-DO for all visitors! read more

We drove 2.5 hours to the Pipiwai trail, and were excited to try this "easy trail" based on the reviews we read online. However, we found out the trail was quite rocky & muddy along with a lot of loose rocks. My boyfriend's mom came along for this "easy hike" and had some trouble with all the vertical steps and slippery surfaces. Lot of other hikers also mentioned the same, as they thought most of the trail would be easy and paved with wood planks. We finished the hike (all the way to the lookout for the beautiful waterfall) and managed to stay for a while before it started raining, which made the path even more slippery and harder for my boyfriend's mom to navigate. Besides that, we had a good time hiking between me, my boyfriend and his teenage daughter. It wasn't overly difficult for us, but it was hard to walk on the roots, rocks and our feet were tired by the end. Overall, we totally recommend this trail as its full of fun attractions (the huge banyan tree, the bamboo forest and waterfalls). However, please note it's not "easy" by any means and we would not advise bring older adults along unless they are experienced hikers with good stamina. read more

This trail has a bunch of different elements, which is what makes it great. It is 2 miles in and 2 miles back out, not too strenuous. It took about 2 hours round trip, with stops along the way for pictures and simply taking in the beauty. You have to enter Haleakala national park for this and that is $30 per car. The parking lot is there and there are bathroom facilities and a spot to fill up your water bottle. The beginning is like many other hikes, with a view of a waterfall after .8 miles. You should keep going as the next site to see if the huge banyan tree. My kids spent some time here climbing as there were no restrictions (unlike the one in Lahaina) and had a blast. From there, you cross over a few bridges with waterfalls, and then through a bamboo forest. Lastly, you come around a corner and see the huge waterfalls, over 400 feet high! You can't get close, as there is a sign saying not to go beyond a certain point as there have been deaths, but we saw plenty of people ignoring it and going on. The view from there was stunning and good enough for us! read more

A beautiful, easy, 4mi round trip hike. You get to see a cool banyan tree, at least a mile of a bamboo forest and lastly, rewarded with a 400 ft waterfall by the name of Waimoku Falls. There is a parking lot and it costs $30 for entry, sounds expensive but the pass is good for 3 days and can be uses all over the park including going to Haleakala summit. Luckily for me, the day I came, the ticket machine was out of service so pretty much everyone had a freebie that day! The hike takes about 2 - 2.5 hours with stops for photos. It's a very easy hike with lots of things to take in. I started a little pass 9am when the park open but already noticed at least 4 people returning at 10am, meaning they started earlier! The trail is always open, but the parking area is open at 9am, if anyone knows of a secret parking spot to start earlier, let me know! It's advised not to attempt this hike after 3pm, but if you're feeling adventurous, I don't see why it'll hurt. A def must stop when doing the Road to Hana! read more

After living on Maui for a year and a half doing nothing but sitting at a desk doing homework or sleeping on the couch to an episode of bee & puppycat, I finally decide to have an adventure! Only took me moving off the island in two days to get me out of the house. From Kihei or Kahului you'll want to leave by 9-10. Add two hour to the if on Lahaina side. This trail is on the Hana side of the island. That means it will take 2-3 hours to get there from the major tourist spots, depending on which way you choose to go. Most people take the Hana Hwy to get there (it's a lovely drive that will remind you of any windy mountain road you ever been on), but I say no to the Hana Hwy. NO HANA HWY! I much more prefer the Pilani Hwy route. Affectionately known as the back road to Hana. This path is a true adventure. This road will take you through up country (farm country on the slopes of Haleakala), past the Maui Winery (perfect stop for lunch), and off the grind. Literally off grid which is why I love this part of the island. Barely any people, no power lines, homes, or business (for now). You can stop by the side of the road or, if you have a good off road car, take on of the grass roads to closer to the cliffs and ocean. Just make sure you stop when you see nothing around. Get out and enjoy the sound of the wind through the grass. Absolutely peaceful. The next stop you'll want to make is at the abandoned church. It's a nice little stop to stop and walk around with beautiful views. Here's where it starts to get interesting. The roads, if you could call them that are NOT for sports cars or PEOPLE WHO DONT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE! Lol sorry read story below. These are dirt, one lane roads with few pull offs or passing areas. You will have to reverse at some point. Small SUV is the vehicle you want here. While the road is a challenge the reward is the amazing views. Make sure you don't miss the parking area on the right. Maps will take you further up but that's not the parking area. It's 20-30 dollars to park and you'll want to use the restroom before you get going. While you can do this hike in slippers if you wanted, it is a 2 mile hike uphill in mud if it rained at all the day you go. I would suggest sneakers or hiking shoes if you have them. The banyan tree is your 1/4 finished trail marker with the bamboo forest being the half way point. That's right you still have a mile to go. If you're visiting Maui I would say it's a perfect day trip. There are a few things to do on that side of the island (black sand beach) so start early, do some research, and have fun! If you make a day of it you won't get back till about 8. Plan and pack for everything and anything, expect nothing, discover the little things. Adventure is out there! ~_^ read more

Absolutely beautiful trail! Breathtaking waterfall views and bamboo forest was nothing like I've ever seen before! However... I am an avid hiker and this was not an easy hike as most people have commented. It's not very difficult BUT lots of stairs, my calves were hurting for days! So be prepared! Also, I saw many families with young children attempting to do this hike in flip flops! You absolutely need comfortable hiking shoes, some parts are very muddy and slippery, lots of rocks, jagged steps and VERY SPIKEY sticks! Please do not attempt this hike in flip flops! I saw many miserable little kids (some in tears), it was not fun for them. read more

We did this hike at the beginning of April and started around 1:30 pm. It was pretty hot in some parts as there wasn't a lot of shade at the beginning. I'm 5.5 months pregnant and not the fastest. My friends weren't in appropriate shoes and we did this hike pretty ok. We only went up to the bamboo forest and it took us about 2 hours round trip. It wasn't muddy for us (maybe past the point we went it is) and my friend got bit up by mosquitoes around the bamboo forest area. There are bathrooms and water fountains near the parking lot which isn't too far from the start of the trail. The entrance fee to the park was $30 per car. read more

Pipiwai Trail - Bridge crossing onto the bamboo forest - Hiking Near Me - Hana,, Hawaii

(Review as of: 12/14/2022) This review is primarily for the Pipiwai Trail but will add points for other parts as well. In order to start the trail, you have 2 options: (1) Enter and Park through the Kipahulu Visitor Center and pay the $30 USD entrance fee. (2) Self park about 1 mi before the trail starts on the main Hana Hwy (more dangerous as you won't have any protection for your car). The Trail itself is quite easy, nice incline and flat parts including the bamboo trail, encounters with wild pigs/boars, and ending at a blocked waterfall "do not enter" sign. Recommend hikers/walkers to go no later then 10am local time, as you may not get parking access after 10. Also a lot more sunlight and heat after 10am. The only drawback prior to 10am is if it rained the day before, some parts of the trail will be muddy. Bring a couple bottles of water, a hat, and a good enthusiastic outlook on life. A must for all visitors as you get some fresh air, some exercise, a nice easy trail, and nice memories. You'll encounter a few waterfalls along the way, the bamboo trail, a big banyan tree as well as unique greenery throughout. Trail Intensity = 5/10 (medium). Good level of incline over time, nothing to hard. read more

This was our last stop on the Road to Hana. We wanted to go into Haleakala to see the O'heo Pools and Seven Sacred Pools to maybe swim after a long day after hiking various areas of Hana, but unfortunately no swimming is allowed. You have to pay for a National Park pass ($40 I think?) but this trail is well worth it! It's a pretty easy hike, well walked and has some paved areas throughout. It's a little over 2 miles and ends with a beautiful waterfall. The park closes at 5pm so they don't advise you start after 3pm but we arrived around 2pm and had plenty of time. There are a lot of people walking it so you'll always know where to go. The bamboo forest was the most beautiful thing and so unique! If you're a fan of nature and hikes, definitely make sure to end your adventure with this. Be warned, if you're prone to bug bites, wear bug spray! It was pretty dry for the majority of our hike which didn't bring out the mosquitos but definitely got hit with a downpour and was eaten alive! It was pretty uncomfortable with the bugs but that's what you get in the middle of the park. I would also recommend wearing good shoes just because it can get a little slippery if you're not careful. Not a great trail for flip flops or casual sandals. Hiking sandals or anything with some grip would do just fine! Definitely our favorite hike of Hana. read more

***Family Hike Review*** Completed this hike as a single married couple back in 2013, when you could legally go to the base of the waterfall (I was 7 months pregnant at that time). Recently today, I completed the hike with a 10 year old, 8 year old, and hubby. Arriving to the trailhead IS a chore. It's about an additional 30 mins from Hana (an already 2hr drive from Kannapali area). Once passed Hana, the road certainly isn't as maintained and much more bumpy. Be wear. If your kids are motion sickness, dramamine is a must. Okay, back to the hike. The trailhead is across the street from the parking lot. There was a sign suggesting to start the hike prior to 320pm to avoid a dark trail (it is mostly shaded and forested, be ware). The hike is about 4 miles round trip if you travel to the waterfall. It is very straightforward and marked. It can get muddy (especially as the day progresses). Be sure and have sturdy shoes and pack snacks for littles. There were 2 stream crossings closer to the waterfall, this is where sturdy hiking shoes were beneficial (keen type). A banyan tree is a great place for pictures and a great place for kids to romp around. The elevation gain was tolerable. The bamboo forest was enchanting and a great family photo op (bring a tripod). We saw pigs and piglets. Once you arrive to the warning sign, the base of the waterfall is bout 5 mins passed the sign. Enter at your own risk. We saw everyone walking passed it... A national park entrance fee is required for parking, don't forget your annual pass or national parks passport. Happy trails! The hike took us about 3hrs. read more

This is a 3.8-mile out-and-back trail near Hana, Maui and is generally considered a moderately challenging route. On an average, I'd estimate this to take close to 2.5 hours to complete. About the trail itself, the paths are slightly slippery depending on the weather but still decently maintained. The trail culminates with some stupendous views of the Waimoku waterfall but it's recommended to not get too close to the water as it's highly dangerous. There's plenty of parking within the national park near the trail entrance along with restrooms and water-fillers. read more

Decent fee to get into the park but definitely worth it. 4-mile and 2-hour round trip. The most difficult part of the hike is the first hour when it's all incline. The trail to Waimoku falls doesn't get you that close but the part that makes this adventure worthwhile is the bamboo forest. It really feels like you're in a magical forest and you have a moment to escape the world, reality, and time. I wish we made a right because we missed the Seven Sacred Pools. Absolutely one of the most stunning waterfall trails I've hiked. A whole series of pools and waterfalls as you make your way up the trail. The trail starts at the loop that take you to where the waterfall meets the sea. This view was too difficult to catch the beauty of it in pictures. Trail is rated moderate with over 900 foot elevation change. It's an out and back of 3.8 miles which half of those miles you are going up hill. Aside from all the stunning waterfalls you will make your way through a beautiful bamboo forest with wooden planks to walk on. The great finally of the hike is the tallest waterfall at the end. When it's rained recently be prepared for muddy conditions, slippery. Wear proper shoes and bring plenty of water. The hike is location in the Haleakala National Park so bring your parks card with you otherwise there is a fee to enter. The park is past the town of Hana on the "Road to Hana". So if you want to include this Gem into your trip start early. read more

Second time to hike this trail. The first attempt was unsuccessful d/t time constriction and weather (I believe in May... so hot!) And the second time was in November and made it all the way :) Not an easy hike for me.. although some people say it is. It was rainy, muddy, slippery and I kept stopping to let other hikers behind us pass. I have no problem hiking up steps, stairs etc... but going down? So afraid of slipping and falling, I kept my eyes on the ground which took us a longer time heading back. My poor husband was so patient and I clung onto him when there's steps going down. There's lots of bugs.. I believe more than usual since it was a rainy day. Our legs and arms were bitten by mosquitoes, so do make sure to spray some repellant or wear long pants! But the scenery, waterfalls and most of all the bamboo Forrest made it all worth the hike!! This is part of Haleakalā National Park.. $25 fee to get in or if you have a yearly National Park pass .. you can use that also. Make sure to wear non skid, good traction shoes, plenty of water and bug repellant. read more

With all the boba drinks I consume, I'm not in the greatest shape these days. While some reviews will share this hike is an easy one, I would have to respectfully disagree as this hike was hard for me -- especially the first 30 minutes with all of the stairs and inclining. My poor husband was really patient because I kept stopping every 15 minutes or so. The roundtrip hike took us nearly 4 hours. And again, it's because this hike was hard for me. It may not be the case for others who are in better shape. Aside from that, the YouTube videos and online reviews are pretty accurate. You can't unsee the beauty on this trail. From the big beautiful Banyan Tree to the Bamboo Forests (there is more than one), all the way to the ultimate prize of the majestic 400 ft. Waimoku waterfall -- the almost 4 mile hike was worth every step. Some tips: * arrive early to find good parking and to begin hiking while it's still cool * parking is $25. Card only * only restroom is in the parking lot * apply sunscreen and lots and lots of bug spray * bring a lot of water and light snacks * probably not ideal for kids under 8 * no reception so stay on the trail. read more

We arrived at the trail shortly before 9am and it was perfect because we had the trail to ourselves going in. Admission is currently $30 but you can use the same receipt within three days to visit the Haleakala crater and vice versa. The trail was more challenging going in than coming out because it was more of an uphill climb. Some parts were muddy but overall this hike was not too challenging. There are parts with shade but also some parts exposed to the blazing sun. I suggest getting there early to enjoy the scenery with no/minimal people because it gets busy. It was relaxing to hear the bamboo moving against each other when the wind hit. read more

Beautiful hike. Totally worth it. Took us 3 1/2 hrs to do up and back. Lots of rocks and roots so hiking shoes or ones with good tread are a must. Bug spray is also needed just in case. It was beautiful when we got to the waterfall. The road leading up to the park was definitely in need of repair but you dodge the potholes ans drive slow. read more
