Our stop here was by chance. We were quite hungry and looking for a quick lunch on our drive from Auckland to Rotorua. We pulled into an unassuming building and were greeted by some wonderful smells inside. We tried a sampling cheese plate and a selection of other goodies. The inside was a bit spartan, but had everything we required. Service was a little on the slower side, but it was off-season. To be honest, it gave us just the break from driving we needed. Few food options for sale (it was fall there so maybe they put out more in the busier summer months) but they do have foodservice options, great coffee and pastries...and oh so important - free wifi for which they give you a code on a slip of paper and once entered the code us good for an hour. Nice stop between Coromandel and Taupo. read more

We stopped off at the kaimai cafe for a quick lunch on the wag to our destination. we ordered the beef burger and thai beef salad, which cost $39... FIRSTLY that price is ridiculous!!!!! SECONDLY the food tasted SOOO BAD!!! The thai beef salad was as if they picked the greens straight from the bag and tossed it on a plate with some disgustingly marinated beef on top with no dressing at all!! Dry and didnt taste "thai" at all! Not coming back ever. read more

If u like cheese and wanna bring some home remember to bring a cooler bag. this is a great place to have a quick stop when you are on a road trip to rotorua. Its probably the best cafe in the vicinity! Free cheese tasting and good serving portion for food too. Coffee is not bad either! read more

We had the chance to stop by the Kaimai Cheese Company on our way from Auckland to Rotorua. Unfortunately, it was on the very day their factory was not running. However, since we were a little hungry, we stayed to enjoy a cheese plate at their cafe. The cheese plate was larger than we had anticipated, but it made sense considering the price. We were provided with 4 somewhat generous pieces of their cheeses (camembert, double cream camembert, brie, creamy blue), and a type of condiment. Their cheeses were quite good - more on the lighter and creamy side. We did find it odd, however, that the two employees we asked didn't know what the cheese on the board were and had to double-check. I would think that that's somewhat of a prerequisite for working there. Not a big deal; just an oddity. If you happen to find yourself on the road between Auckland and Rotorua, make at least a quick stop here. You may need to, anyway, because if I remember correctly, they're the only rest stop for quite a while. ;) read more

We stopped here for a light snack on the way back home. Ordered the iced chocolate, iced mocha, gourmet steak and cheese pie and a bacon and egg frittata. It is a good cheese shop with a cafe on the side. The lady at the counter didn't know what was in the cabinet and over charged us. We didn't get the difference back. Considering they make their cheeses I was surprised to see the steak and cheese pie was made of processed cheese. Average to poor. Seems like a bad review however comparatively in the location it has a good selection of food. read more

We stopped here on our way from Rotorua to Auckland. Our friend got the name from his AmEx concierge. Bonus that they had their full menu available even at 9:30 in the morning. Husband got the seafood chowder, I had the croque monsieur plus egg, and we shared a bowl of chips. I also got an additional pesto cheese scone to go. Seafood chowder was the consensus favorite. The broth was well balanced - creamy without being heavy. The seafood was all properly cooked and clearly the base was cooked separately so the seafood wouldn't overcook. There were scallops (with coral), mussels?, calamari pieces, and smoked salmon. The buttery toast served alongside was delicious dipped into the chowder. I loved my croque monsieur. As expected the cheese was delicious and the pesto cheese scone base was great too! Friends enjoyed the smoked salmon benedict and moroccan chicken salad, as well as their own bowl of seafood chowder. read more

Hadn't noticed this place before and know how good their cheese is so did a u turn and had lunch vs carry on to Tirau. The cabinet offerings and blackboard menu were very ordinary and other than the cheese platter had a distinct lack of Kaimai cheese. There were 2 specials and I choose the corn fritters solely on the basis that the feta creme would be the real deal. It truly was a standout. The fritters were corn and carrot - very tasty but on quite a small plate/bowl so was atop a green salad. I'm not a proponent of enormous empty plates but surely a bit bigger here would be better. Mr j had the creamy mushrooms which came with a tasty sausage much to his surprise. He declares it all very nice and he had no objection to the size of the plate/bowl. The coffees were good. Considering the location on main route I expect most who stop use the loo. I found these not the best. 3 marked disabled, men's and women's with only one toilet behind each door. We were early for lunch and already one loo roll was empty and the bin overflowing with paper towels. Worryingly mr j thought all 3 were unisex and maybe explains why I needed to clean the seat. On a positive note I love the great repurposing of an historic building. I'm sure we'll return to see if they improve as there is such potential. read more

Wow! Randomly stopped here on the road to Rotorua, and blown away by our delicious lunches. Very fresh and refreshing and healthy, and cute atmosphere to boot! Five stars!! read more
