My stay at Brookside was the opposite of what I expected, in the best way possible. The intake process (once I got out of the ER) was not anxiety provoking because the nurse was extremely kind. Every staff member I interacted with during my 6 days there treated me with kindness, care, and acceptance and I didn't receive judgement from anyone during my entire stay. The facility was clean and an ideal environment for recovery. The beds are very uncomfortable but in the grand scheme of things was not a big deal. I was so scared initially, but my stay here was exactly what I needed. I am extremely grateful that a place like this exists and is filled with amazing staff. read more

First things first. Brookside is a specialized part of Kaiser that serves 2 populations. There is a 20 bed residential program for Addictions and another 20 bed program for mental health. All of the reviews I've read here have nothing to do with Brookside. Brookside does not do surgery nor birthing. That is Kaiser Sunnyside. Brookside Mental Health is a support for Kaiser patients struggling with depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation and similar mental health issues. It is a short term, residential program, by referral only from your Dr, therapist or from the Emergency Department. I have a friend who went there to admit herself. They turned her away saying she had plenty of help. She left and came back a half hour later she told them she really wanted to admit herself they turned her away again..., she told them if she leaves she was just going to commit suicide if they didn't admit her. They refused her again. Guess what?... That's just what she did. Hope you all can live with yourselves for turning away a person who truly needed help. Thanks for nothing. Brookside is a mental health and addictions Center only. A KP provider or ED referral is required for admittance. I recently stayed on the 20-bed mental health side. If you are in crisis, this is the place to be! The staff, programs, and surroundings all work together to successfully address your needs. Everyone truly cares about you and your problems and has a sincere desire to help you regain your equilibrium. My life before and after my stay is a 180-degree difference! read more

First off, the Brookside Center is ONLY a mental health and addiction medicine facility that is in a separate area of the Kaiser Sunnyside campus. No other specialties are done under the Brookside name like birthing or surgery etc. Brookside Is an inpatient facility, usually lasting for between 3 and 30 days. I went to the addiction medicine side back around 2011 IIRC and it was an absolute life saver. I was probably days or at most a few weeks away from giving up things had gotten so out of control. All starting from an auto accident that morphed into a long time pill addiction that led to almost complete financial and social ruin. The first part of deciding to get help was so scary, and then being through the intake process was also quite scary at first but shortly after I knew I was in good hands. I couldn't believe how well thought out everything is, it feels like a high end college dorm inside with comfortable furniture and nice clean newer rooms. Withdrawal still hurt, but whoever gave me the wonderful cocktail of pills that severely lessened the impact of withdrawal is a saint and really knows their stuff. Nothing addictive, only meant to keep us safe while we go through the more perilous part of opiate withdrawal. Within a day or two I began to join group and take part in community dining etc and really enjoyed my remaining time there with other clients and staff who were never judgemental. They even had acupuncture! If you need help with addiction I couldn't recommend Kaiser Permanente Brookside Center more! And thank you to all the wonderful staff that helped me back then! read more

i had a great experience there. i was on the mental health side for a week and everyone was very kind and helpful. there were frustrating moments but overall i would recommend this facility to anyone. very clean and well maintained. welcoming space and the staff were amazing. if you are doing what i did before i went and looking at yelp reviews to tell you if it's a bad place, please believe me when i say it's worth going. it's scary getting help, but this is the place to go if you need it. read more

Being an asshole doesn't get you anywhere. I know this because I have worked years of customer service jobs where I did as little as possible to help customers who treated me like garbage. For years I have put up with Kaiser Permanente's abuse. I think it started back when they told me I tested positive for a blood clot that would kill me almost instantly, only to have them come back to say "just kidding, it was a negative positive! Ha!" Do you know how scary it is to be told you are going to die within seconds? Very. And then you immediately panic in trying to think about all of the fatty foods you will eat in that very bed, because if you are going to die, you might as well go out with a bang! (It was cheese curds, waffle fries, bourbon and flaming hot Cheetos for me but that's beside the point.) Aside from dealing with the aforementioned death scare and no apology, I have dealt with other things such as: Not being seen in the ER when my eye ball was clearly bleeding. I had to run a half marathon the next morning and after four hours of waiting in the ER, I went home and ran it anyway, with a bloody eyeball!! Next in line are the incompetent hoochie mama receptionists that work at the Interstate office and think that using the word "conversate," is ok. They are very professional those Interstate ladies. They file their nails, act completely uninterested, and get annoyed when I ask for a receipt. The dude in the pharmacy always gives me the side eye when I get prescribed vicodin. If you got hit by a Ford F350 on your bike and then got hit in your car by a semi-truck that ran a red light two years later, your ass would be asking for vicodin, too. Plus you are stoned right now anyway, I can tell because you're wearing a Rastafarian hat and you're white! The folks you get over the phone are a little more educated. I say this because I have never heard them say "conversate" once in my life and for the most part, they are pretty efficient. Today I called one of those folks to ask them where their urology office was located. My son had an appointment, we plugged in the address and off we went. After over an hour of driving, the British lady who is the voice behind my GPS announced that we had reached our destination. Would you believe that our destination was some bloody place in the middle of nowhere, over populated by hamburger eating truck drivers? While I have seen strange things go down at Kaiser offices before, this was definitely not a Kaiser! This was a truck stop in the middle of Happy Valley Oregon. We called the husband, who used GOOGLE and directed us to the right place and when we arrived 20 minutes later they refused to see my son. I politely explained to the receptionist that I left work with plenty of time, and that if their incompetent phone rep knew that their offices were not located in a truck stop, we might have been on time. No. No. No. The answer was NO. I missed half a day of work, half a tank of gas, I took my kid out of school, all for this: FOR SOME INCOMPETENT DOUCHE TO GIVE ME THE WRONG ADDRESS AND FOR SOME NURSE AND SOME DOCTOR TO CONDESCENDINGLY TELL ME TO RESCHEDULE BECAUSE THEY ARE BEHIND! WHAT ABOUT ME? WHAT ABOUT THE TRUCK STOP?? If there was just one trace of a tiny apology I would have not been so upset. There is always room for error, I know, especially when humans are involved. But the way that doctor bombastically pranced out of there ready to fight, really threw me off edge. After mumbling "this is bullshit" under my breath a time or two, I had finally had enough. Some words were exchanged, some eyes were rolled, some necks were bobbed and then we were gone. Apologies to the 87 year old men waiting to have their testes examed who may have overheard my maniacal rant. May Jesus help them unhear the terrible words, that came out of my mouth. read more

My partner in life was admitted due to his recent behavioral change that was the last event in a series of hospital visits and unexplained pain and symptoms. I had an infection that had the almost same affect on me and because they had n not treated me since they refused to acknowledge my suffering was real 5 years ago , I am steadfast in my belief that they are misdiagnosing him cause they keep telling me he's fine. The man is acting like a child and not thinking right , he is experiencing pain and seizure and confusion , they doped him up first and then gave him a sreerning !!!!!!!!!!!!told him that he could sign a paper after he signed himself in that would allow me insight into his treatment..( they doped him up first, screened him and then said to wait on paper for me to be able to protect his interest) I called and questioned his meds and was told he was fine and diagnosed with anxiety and depression. Now I'm not sure, but I do not believe that's the case ... it's maybe a thing but he's not that way usually . if they are holding back information from me it's a definite case of gaslighting an already stressed individual to almost a breaking point ( I am speaking of myself) and as a final point I would like to say that after like 13 years I has left Kaiser and was able to get the help I needed and I never have had a side ache anxiety attack headache or any of the orher ailments that plagued me and now are affecting my partner in life. So I ask you... why blood thinner to a mid 40's individual that you are just treating for stress ???I believe that it's the vaccine that triggers infection , curiously there are others that took same one at same time and all have or are being treated for similar problems at this time... now will someone listen?!? What do I have to do? And also if anyone tells me it's not forced treatment, that's bull crap, because if you don't go along with it you can lose your job and they won't continue treating you or giving you meds you become dependent upon .. so I would not agree you have a choice... always read your paper work and always learn about all medications and their purpose and remembwe that just because they are dr they are not omniscient beings and you know yoirself and your loved ones better than anyone.. a degree does not give you an automatic window into the lives of others read more

This place sucks. Every Kaiser Permanente place sucks. Avoid it like the plague. And if you do happen to get the plague, take your chances rather than going to Kaiser. The people who work here are rude, the quality of care is sub par at best, it takes forever to get an appointment and when you do finally see a doctor, good luck getting them to pay any attention to you or listen to your concerns about your health. Kaiser is the equivalent of a puppy mill for health care; get you in, take your money, give you nothing but grief in return. They don't give a shit about you - just your wallet. I've had better care from a doc-in-a-box. Kaiser Permanente sucks and they should be kicked out of Oregon. This state is too good for Kaiser. read more

The Good: Kaiser is everything under the same roof; your doctor, your lab, your nurse, pharmacy, radiology, and therapy etc. If you have just medical insurance (a PPO plan), you may have to go to 3 different facilities just to take care of one treatment. Kaiser's research and medical treatment protocols are first class, and their equipment and facilities are state of the art. Kaiser doctors do just one thing-practice medicine. They are not distracted with concerns of revenue, bills, hiring and firing of employees, or meeting PPO quotas. The Bad: At the clinic-level Kaiser can definately improve. Kaiser needs to follow the Nordstrom model of service (after all people pay top dollar for service there), and shy away from the DMV model of assembly line approch. The Soviet-era lines at every counter (especially pharmacy) need better management, and the stark veterans' hospital look should be warmed up by appropriate decor and lighting. Most nurses can lose 50 lbs, and more volunteers can help facilitate things. The labs can give you a restaurant style pager so you're not bound to the waiting room reading ripped up Sunset magazines, and can go take care of your Rx or grab a coffee while they prepare long sharp needles for you. The Verdict: This member based intigrated health care delivery system is the wave of the future, and the system is designed to keep you healthy proactively and not reactively. read more

It all started with me and my dad coming to the emergency room my dad was getting checked out for having memory loss and just problems walking and I was there for my hernia needless to say I didn't get looked at because they're too packed so i it all started good and then they said they needed to keep my dad overnight so they give him an MRI he wasn't able to take one the next day so they kept them and an emergency room I told the doctor that my dad wasn't withdrawing from alcohol withdraws because he was known for being an alcoholic he hadn't drinking over a month and what did they start doing they start treating them for alcohol withdrawals making that something to do with what's wrong with him so he was kind of resisting so they strapped him to the bed and started giving them all kinds of stuff I don't know what kind of sedatives to make him out of it so that he could take the MRI the next day I told the doctor the next day that he didn't have alcohol but he was had two strokes and he had some issues and they needed to check it sorry to keep on going on about the MRI so then they admit him to the hospital cuz they think there's still something going on and won't let me take them home because I don't have 24-hour care so I got mad I didn't contact them for like a week I contacted me a week later telling me that my dad had pneumonia and that he was on a breathing machine oxygen and that I need to come in there so I went in there and the doctors were just all about oh your dad's been such an inconvenience we'd like to just basically give him morphine and you know put him out of his misery I didn't agree I told the doctor no do not do that let me talk to my brother first or something told me that night I woke up at 2:30 in the morning I called there and she gave me okay to start giving him morphine and make him comfortable they won't feel himself choking on the sliver that was blocking his throat I'm getting pneumonia from that place when he never had it when he went in there no prayers nothing and I did something to his throat so he couldn't drink or swallow doctor and amdjerty or whatever I don't know her name but she was cold hearted b**** trying to get my brother to go against me and drop the DNR it's on paperwork against me even though I was the one who was in charge my brother didn't have nothing to do with the paperwork or nothing she was just trying to throw on her two cents tell me I need to come grips with reality well I think he could have been fixed I try to get him transferred to OHSU have room they came up with excuses after excuses just so I can spend more time with them I didn't know that he was on his way to die and needless to say he didn't need for 2 weeks and ended up dying last Thursday one day after I put him in hospice so if you love your family member don't take them there because she'll never be able to take him home I would never forgive myself for what happened I lost my mom 7 years ago my dad was all I had and he put all stress to me and I let him down I let him down back I took him to a place that has no compassion and no care for someone who has early stages of dementia who don't know what's going on who don't know where they're at it's very confused and now he died confused me never going to be back never so please please please listen to me do not take your family there read more

They picked up my call with a rude voice, it seems they got mad with something and putting it up on me. They should have been working there at all. It just keep kaiser name going down more and more. Customer service on the phone are not friendly and helpful either. However, I like my doctor Elis Madrigal. They have lots of good doctors there as well as the nurses. The care I've received at the hands of their well versed surgeons and nursing staff was bar none - AWESOME! The billing process has left me so frustrated I'm ready to say "fuck it," over pay on everything and hope that eventually they will audit their records and reimburse me 10 years down the road. I wish I could write a review specifically for the WNC (Women and Newborn Care) arena rather than the whole hospital because of this disclaimer: Disclaimer: I work at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center in a COMPLETELY different section. The registered nurses in Labor and Delivery were amazing. Kind and intuitive and well versed in what they were doing. They were flexible and let the care be directed by me, the patient, as much as possible. The CNMs were kind and very knowledgeable and experienced with difficult situations and birth plans that don't go exactly as planned. The Postpartum nurses were also great and allowed me a level of independence that I appreciated once my epidural wore off. Things I liked: uninterrupted periods of sleep and time with my family, being able to order lots of food postpartum because I was super hungry, private rooms. Things I know the measurers like to know: everything was VERY CLEAN, the nurses and CNAs did hourly rounding (I'd actually rather not have someone in every hour personally. I prefer having someone around at crucial moments - the first time I got up out of bed to go to the bathroom, thorough discharge teaching etc. I actually didn't use my call light when I got up to the bathroom the first time post epidural because I felt so bad about using the call light. Kind of dumb on my part because it could have been a safety issue, but I know there is a lot of pressure on nursing staff to hourly round to prevent call lights. Anyway, it all turned out well). The education was great, I felt well informed by the time I discharged from the hospital. I really really like having ONE baby and am 98% sure I am done, but if I had to have another baby, I would definitely be comfortable going to Kaiser Sunnyside. (I'd also recommend surgery at Kaiser, as a surgical floor nurse, but I would only be recommending as a health care provider and not as a consumer). read more

my experience here was horrendous. I really don't understand how they expect people to get sober in that kind of environment. I wouldn't even put my sick dog in that place. Your expected to stay in a room by yourself, yes i know covid but we all took tests, and watch the grass grow on outside. Mind you, your not aloud outside. I have nothing bad to say about kaiser. My primary care doctor, is very kind and caring. And very intentive. Back in 04 when I had back problems, he took intrest to it, In 06 I went in and had steroid injection. And after they were done, and I had another MRI. He recommended that I have surgery. The surgeon was informative after you get done consulting me he asked me if I had any questions and I did any answer those questions. And when my back was feeling my primary care gave me two refills on vicodin and after that I didn't need anymore read more

I have been a Kaiser patient my entire life, as has my mother and her parents before her. My child was recently born at the Kaiser Sunnyside labor and delivery unit, my prenatal doctor was AMAZING!!!! I can not recommend Dr.Hashima more highly, if you have a pregnancy in your near future, or are pregnant give him a call, he takes great care of you and baby throughout the whole pregnancy. I was high risk, and thanks to him my beautiful daughter was born full term.. Actually on her expected date exactly. April 19th, 2015. She is perfect weight, height, 10 fingers and toes, never a single complication, all thanks to him paying such close eye on me and baby. Not only will you be treated great at that unit for your prenatal (pre labor) checkups, but the actual delivery unit is amazing! The staff are soo incredible, very sweet and genuine, and very upfront about all steps prior to treatment/testing. The unit itself has lots of different features to accommodate an """ easy""" birth LOL... If there is such a thing. A jacuzzi for laboring mothers, a shower if that's your thing, the yoga ball, lots of different cultural amenities can also be provided there at patients request. On a different note, I had appendicitis in 2012, I was taking into the ER by my mother and boyfriend, and due to my symptoms seen very quickly, and than moments after the visit I was being whisked away to go have surgery. It all was happening so fast, and it was my first surgery, to be honest I was scared like a tiny baby, just inconsolable.. Not my finest moment I must admit. But they were all so understanding, I remember being wheeled to the OR and the next thing I know I was waking in my room feeling great *meds* I barely have a scar at all, and I was discharged in a matter of a few hours, the work was top notch although I didn't feel it at the time haha. Brookside is a facility with 2 parts. One side is addiction recovery and the other side is for depression and anxiety recovery. They do not do any surgery there. It is a residential treatment facility. The people there from the people who clean to the doctors who treat are all outstanding! Very down to earth and very compassionate. They are very dedicated to teaching coping skills and getting meds on board if needed. I have never felt more supported and cared for than the time I spent at Brookside. Some people on here are confusing the Brookside Residential Treatment Facility with the Sunnyside Kaiser Hospital and Medical Facility. I also have had nothing but great medical care from any Kaiser Facility. I have been with them for 14 years. read more

I took my wife to the Emergency room last night. We were told that due to cost cut backs they only had one doctor on duty. The waiting time was 3 hours plus. The waiting room was full. We waited one hour and decided at 12am to go home and call her doctor for an appointment on Monday. read more

Sunnyside Hospital is the worst "In Patient" surgery Hospital experience I have ever had. I have had "In Patient" surgery 5 times at another Hospital. I switched to Kaiser when I retired due to the cost and up until my surgery on 12/1/2011, I had nothing but good things to say about Kaiser. I have great family doctor and the other medical staff have been excellent also. What in the world is wrong with their hospital. I was shoved in a room with a room mate that was designed for one. By the time you got our beds and extra equipment in the room there was no where for the medical staff to get in and out of the room. The staff seem confused and rushed. They did not have time for patients. I'm not sure if I should blame the staff or the administration. Since this was my first time ever in this hospital I don't know if it is always like this or if they just where extremely busy on that day and extremely under-staffed. My surgeon wants to do another surgery but I have told him not yet. I am so afraid to go back to that hospital and have another bad experience. I was left all night my first night with out pain meds. I thought I was going to die from the pain. I had just had major surgery, I have a one foot scar to prove it. I am just now recovering from a really bad experience. read more

Kaiser is terrible healthcare and very, very frustrating to deal with. You are not a person there - just a number. Someone ordered 5 additional blood tests without my OK. When a specialist orders a test apparently you don't talk to him again, you have to go through your primary care physician. That doesn't make sense. Someone is supposed to call and set up an appointment and you don't hear anything even after calling twice to let them know. Member services is a call center somewhere in the midwest. What do they know about me? Nothing. And they can't even answer policy questions. You have to file a complaint just to get answers. I feel like there is a massive wall between me and my healthcare sources and care. I'd give them a 0 if I could. I am new with Kaiser this year. And it has been a massive clusterf%&*. Do yourself a favor, avoid Kaiser. read more

I noticed most of these reviews are second hand, "from a friend" or family etc. TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO RECEIVED THEIR SERVICES. DO NOT GO HERE. I will say a few of the staff members were clearly compassionate but that's not all it takes to handle extremely delicate human beings. They take away your medicine, which I can understand, but then they forget to give it to you!! TWO DAYS IN A ROW I was there they completely forgot to give me my birth control. Even after I made such a big deal about it the day before, how important it is. They thought ah this girl clearly isn't unstable enough LETS F*CK WITH HER HORMONESSSS. Additionally the staff has zero communication. Like I said, compassionate but absolutely clueless. Needless to say I discharged myself and took my money elsewhere. Staff should really think hard about if this line of work is right for them. I left Brookside more hopeless than when I walked in. read more

Worst service from a hospital ever! The nurses and doctor were very short and un informative. I didn't know what we were waiting on half the time. They would just leave the room without explaining what would happen next or when they'd be back. It was the longest wait as well. We were at the hospital for 4+ hours for a concussion?!?! Valentine's Day of 2017 I asked the nurse to please check my daughter's bed for a bag that was a surprise it was brand new clothes.The nurse or whoever I spoke to refused.My daughter is 27 and in a group so I couldn't call.The nurse said the charge nurse would take the complaint.I said no I want to go higher.She rudley put me on hold without telling me she was going to do it.I called the main Sunnyside branch and I couldn't complain because I wasn't a active member.What does that matter I'm a real person with a complaint so to bad for me.Lousy service for a 50 year old to be treated. read more

I recently had outpatient surgery at Brookside. Everyone, from check in to check out was exceptionally kind, efficient, effective and ready to answer any question I had. I've been with Kaiser for well over a decade and have had excellent care at Brookside, Interstate and KP Westside facilities. My primary care physician is the best doctor I have ever had. read more

I delivered my first baby via c-section at Kaiser Sunnyside 6/16/09 and I cannot say enough good things about the staff and the experience. I hadn't wanted a c-section, but my baby was breech, so there wasn't much of an alternative. That being said, I feel like the staff did everything they could do to prevent me from having one - assisting with exercises, trying a turning procedure, etc. To no avail, so bring on the c-section. Everyone we interacted with was kind, helpful, supportive, and knowledgeable. My husband was able to hold the baby shortly after delivery and as soon as I was stable, they helped me breastfeed and gave us time to bond with the baby. The great care continued throughout our four-day stay. It was not a sterile, uncomfortable experience at all, like many folks fear in a hospital stay. Everyone was incredibly helpful and nurturing and our medical needs were attended to perfectly. All of the staff provided lots of helpful and practical advice and support to let us be completely in control of how we took care of our newborn. It wasn't the birth that we planned for, but after our experience, we wouldn't have wanted it any other way. read more

Horrible. We had the same experience of going to the ER and being told they are understaffed . . . . 4 hours later . . . . . Then, on another day, I took a friend to the hospital at Sunnyside. There was not one patient waiting but the lady in the triage station. Rather than get things moving, we sat in the waiting room for 30 minutes. Unbelievable. read more
