I've had nothing but good experiences here. Most recently I had surgery and from the time I got there, I was well taken care of. I expected to have a very impersonal experience, however, it was great. My main hospital is in Pinole, however, due to the nature of my surgery my treatment was in Oakland - my surgeon, my departmental care, my recovery on the ward, and my follow-up care. I've also come here for some follow up procedures. My husband has also come here for some follow-up after a nasty fall. Each time they are professional, on time, and are some of the nicest people. They are worlds better than Richmond, which really doesn't know how to treat people. They are also better than Pinole, which doesn't have much in the way of services. I'd come back here, to their hospital and offices in Oakland, in a heartbeat! read more

It seems that the quality of patient care at Kaiser- Oakland has declined significantly over the past few years, especially under the current senior Administrators. Being informed about Health Care is a cornerstone of staying healthy, and Kaiser Oakland FAILS in this area. There is a serious lack of I PERSON Health Education classes vailbke at Kaiser Oakland and the staff at the Health Education area seems to be uninformed. I only have an iPad - which I cannot access Zoom on ( Zoom recently made changes to their platform which locks out iPad users). Nor do I comprehend information presented in a Zoom format - since communication is 80% non- verbal ( things like body language and voice tone). Kaiser Health Education program FAILS by not being offered on an In Person basis- it suggests Laziness and a Lack Of Effort by Kaiser's Heath Education Staff- and Oakland Kaiser Hospital Administration- and makes the whole Health Education program - Worthless and a complete waste of time.......... The attitude of Kaiser's front-line staff and Oakland Hospital Administration - seems to be that nobody cares about quality of service or taking care of patients. I'm better off getting my Heath education by just watching YouTube videos than getting any kind of useful information from Kaiser's Health Education Department. read more

I CANNOT PREACH MORE, DO NOT COME HERE. I don't remember any specific names, but they were working with DR. Chen. They treated the relative I had here with ZERO care, I mean they were aggressive(with a 73 year old woman btw!), she has shortness of breath so she can be hard to hear sometimes: they weren't even TRYING to listen to her, the damn doctors were over here looking to me for help(hence this is THEIR job). She tried multiple times to tell them when stuff wasn't going right and what did they do??? THEY SAT THERE AND IGNORED HER, TREATED HER LIKE SHE WAS A 3 YEAR OLD, AND RAISED THEIR VOICE AT HER LIKE SHE WAS 99% DEAF. It is extremely degrading. Kaiser is only great when it collects a monthly premium (over $1000) and you want absolutely nothing from them except maybe a vaccine once in a while or a "yearly checkup". My Kaiser doctor called me with test results and told me I needed to get a ct scan "immediately." Kaiser is an HMO, so I had to go to one of their labs. The lab had 1 opening that I could have made it to, but they told me I'd have to be there 30 minutes earlier than the appointment time, which would have been impossible. The only other option was to go to the Kaiser Emergency Room, which is what I did. Upon arriving at the emergency room I was told I'd have to do another ekg in order to be admitted, despite having done an ekg at Kaiser the previous day. Yay, more money for Kaiser, but I let them do it again (and yes, same results as the previous day). Upon admission, I told the doctor I was there for a ct scan. He asked a few questions and confirmed that he had read my regular doctor's orders. He leaves, a male nurse and a registration guy come in and tells me it's $200 just for been admitted. I asked if he could give me an estimate on the total cost of the visit. He said no. Wait - the doctor and nurse know exactly what they're going to do. Why can't you be transparent about the cost? Anyway, he can't. I tell the nurse I'm opting out of anything that is not required to complete the ct scan that my doctor had ordered. He said that's not possible, they needed to do everything the er doctor ordered. I told him that's not what my doctor ordered and I didn't want it unless they could give me an estimate. He told me they treat "holistically" and again refused to do a ct scan that could potentially save my life. So at this point, I realized that this man, a nurse, not even a doctor, was overriding my doctor's orders and telling me I could write Kaiser a blank check or I could go home and risk dying. Getting a ct scan was not an option. I did not trust him, I did not feel safe and I felt that a man telling me he has control of my body was completely unprofessional and if it's not illegal - should be. This nurse should be stripped of his license and put in prison. If I die because he refused the ct scan, he needs to be arrested for that as well. Stay away this ER. You will be stripped of your rights and left to die so that this non-profit hmo insurance scam can make a profit. read more

Truly the worst hospital!!!!! The nurses don't do their job. Well, they do but not well. They don't care and just want to get paid. Not all nurses are like this though. A family member was transferred here and almost passed twice because of negligence!!!! Like what?!?!? He was okay when he was in a different hospital but when he got to Oakland, it went from 0 to 100. The nurses "forgot" to turn on his machine (which helps him breathe. He was there for surgery on his lungs) They admitted to us that they forgot. It is horrible. Now, he is traumatized by what happened. It is really scary and seeing that happen to him breaks my heart. Emergency services was quick to get me in. However after a accessment they tried to get me out the door with no answers to my pain. I had to advocate for more services until a doctor came back to answer my questions. Even then I was led to believe I would get more medical attention the next day if I called another number... not so. It was 24 hours of merry-go-round with no answers . Just the worst! read more

Feb 4th around 2:40ish did not catch the labor and delivery check in desk lady name. She questioned me asking if I called first before arriving, I am at the end of my pregnancy and that was her first response to me. Then she asked why did I come in a wheel chair that I'm not going into labor right now that I can stand up and check in right over here face to face with her. My mother asked her why is she not understanding that I was having pain, then jumps to ask my mother where did we park our car that I need to move my car for other women that are actually going into labor. I looked at my mother to keep her mouth closed with the pain I was having I was not in the mood to argue with the lady who seems to be unhappy with her life to be treating us the way she did when we first checking. She then kept quiet and was still worrying about my mother not listening to her and asked her to move the car plus for my mother to take the wheel chair back! and we informed her that the security down stairs mention she was suppose to give us a yellow ticket to keep my car safe from being towed. Ofcourse she tells us they don't do that anymore, she seen we was bothered with her attitude and sits me in the triage room, opens items that was sterile in the bag and drops it on the floor. With the mind she had Ofcourse still placed it for me to put it on my body. Then leaves the room saying she'll check on me in 20min, I seen the doctor finally and just overall with the whole experience I told myself I will not be delivering my baby in this hospital. I understand it's Oakland and they may deal with other kind of people. However how that lady treated me and my mother I felt discriminated and she chose to be kind with others and not with us. Not to mention my cousin came in and she was very disrespectful with her as well, her knowing she was rude she apologized to me when I checked out telling me I hope your family member isn't upset with me. I just grabbed my papers and will not be having my child in this location due to that woman being nasty and rude. I mention nasty due to me getting ready to leave and the Doctor that seen me was saying she needs a GBS Swab from me, I told the Doctor I had no problem unchanging again. With me not being surprised the woman that checked me in tells the Doctor In front of me that I can take it home and do it myself! She doesn't deserve to work the job she has with that personality, I needed to share this awareness to other moms out there! Made an appointment for my yearly eye test with Dr C Chung on the 2nd floor. Everything was great from the friendly receptionist who was very professional and efficient, clean bathrooms and waiting area. Reasonable charge for parking (paid 2$ total). Dr Chung himself was very professional and friendly he made me feel comfortable, assured me my vision and eyes are in good health. Had me in and out within 30 min I obtained a prescription for both contacts and glasses. Went down stairs ordered contacts within 5 min. They have an extensive supply of glasses that you can choose from. The entire appointment itself was seamless very easy from start to end. read more

I was truly impressed with Kaiser's Labor & Delivery staff at Kaiser Oakland. My first grand baby delivered at Kaiser Oakland with my oldest daughter was a nightmare. The Labor staff pushed for a C-section while her birth pathway was too narrow for a catheter after receiving a highly concentrated IV mix of fentanyl for the mom and baby. They almost coded in surgery but thanks to prayer and a seasoned surgical nurse and obstetrician correcting the dosage. However, my youngest daughter who delivered C-section-free had a great experience. The midwife-nurse, Auntie Violet, was experienced and insisted she was ready to deliver. Two pushes my little grand angel was here. Auntie Violet laughed with us and stayed with my daughter and grand-daughter until transferred to delivery. The delivery unit staff was outstanding too Ms. Giselle, Ms. Tanisha and all the nurses made sure she was comfortable. They actually let my daughter sleep while I watched the newborn and scheduled check-in updates to let her know when they were coming back in. The pediatrician returned when she was sleeping. Awesome experience and hope all mothers and child at Kaiser Oakland have this 5-star treatment! read more

I'm a Kaiser member and have come to KP Oakland for multiple occasions, including ER, urgent care, dermatology, optometry, labs, pharmacy, immunizations...you name it. KP Oakland is a pretty large campus, spread out among a few buildings. KP Oakland is also one of the few Kaisers in the area that is open on weekends. The other "nearby" locations that are also open on weekends include Richmond, Hayward, and San Leandro - so, as you can imagine, KP Oakland services a large East Bay clientele. The providers I've had in all my visits have generally been very nice, warm and accommodating. A few years ago (on a weekend), I had an issue that needed to get checked out in urgent care. Urgent Care is a little different in KP NorCal as you have to do a phone triage first before coming in person (in SoCal, you're allowed to show up in person to schedule a same day urgent care appointment). So, I showed up and explained my situation. The receptionist was very understanding and said she would talk to the doctor working that day if she could squeeze me in. About an hour later, the receptionist called me back and said the doctor would see me! What a relief and awesome service. At KP Oakland there are a few pharmacies and laboratories. They're all very busy and you may need to wait quite some time to get your labs done (unless you make an appointment) or fill a script. For this reason, I avoid filling my scripts here or getting my labs done here. For those visiting (or going to appointments) here, parking can be quite expensive. The first half hour is free. There is some street parking, but it's quite limited and requires a longish walk. However, on weekends, parking is free! As a Kaiser member, I'll continue coming here for my health needs, especially on weekends if need be. read more

Had a family pass away here and was treated as if I was a criminal by the security desk downstairs. I had been there everyday up for weeks prior. Finally got the call to come right away because things were taking a turn and wouldn't be allowed up. I finally got okayed (security) by not taking no for an answer only to have my family pass away not alone within a short period of time after being let up. This was the worst experience I have ever seen or dealt with involving Kaiser. Please make sure your team of security guards is properly trained and not aggressive or hostile. I came in with everything needed to be provided to go up to the floor just like the weeks prior. I had been there every day. This day, in particular I needed to be there the most out of any of the days I had been there in the past. Time was taken away from me and my loved one by the front desk, security guards. I was already added to the list of people that was approved and the number of people that could be allowed at one time. Especially considering the decline in my loved one's I finally health. ER experience was horrible beyond belief! The whole time I thought the ER smelled only to realize after a couple hours that it was the ER wheelchair that the nurse had me sit down the whole time while waiting for the doctor and to be x-rayed. I wished they would check and sanitize their wheelchair each time they let a patient sit on it. No quality control whatsoever! Filthy dirty place! Dr dismissed me right away and took a wild guess as to what was wrong with me. Dr ordered X-rays on the wrong leg, didn't do any further diagnostics other than giving me a copied X-ray that looked like a cheap quality of ink and paper. This is by far the worse doctor I have ever encountered in my whole life! He didn't address my pain, just told me to see my primary care doctor. So incompetent .... an indicator of what kind of doctor he'll turn up to be later on ... since he's a young dr. So so sad!!!! Kaiser is once again behind the curve, even grossly negligent, when it comes to prompt roll-out of Covid vaccines and boosters. Kaiser failed miserably during the Covid pandemic, my husband and I, both Kaiser medicare members, ended up getting vaccines and boosters elsewhere, at Stanford Medical Health and Walgreens, before Kaiser had anything available. We did manage to get boosters, finally through them. But that was Before, when the government subsidized the cost irregardless of insurance provider. Now, although the vaccine is approved and available elsewhere (CVS has Moderna, Walgreens carries Pfizer for $190.), Kaiser has, we're informed by our doctors, no protocols or supplies in place, and they have no idea when they will, either. We've contacted Medicare, but they won't even get involved until we've filed a complaint with Kaiser, which now has 30 days to respond. Meanwhile we're unprotected. We've heard from other disgruntled Kaiser members they've gone with the out-of-pocket cost at Walgreens, not daring to wait with flu season on us, which is likely the cost-cutting route Kaiser is practicing de facto. It's not as if they didn't know this updated vaccine was coming! So much for prevention and preparedness! read more

The staff has been caring and accommodating, my doctor really knows how to listen. Date: 10/15/2015 Time: 9:00 AM 64° Partly cloudy The Oakland Medical Center is part of the Kaiser Foundation Hospital/Permanente Medical Group (KFH/PMG). The building is modern and new, up to earthquake standard per the hospital employees. The ambiance is nice and the courtyard/indoor atrium is beautiful. I guess Kaiser wanted this type of ambiance, so as to ensure the visitors can feel at ease without looking at a few painted pictures on the dreary walls. I have been a Kaiser member for many years (over 40 years) through my employer's HMO benefit package. I also have had the good fortune of not being hospitalized too often at Kaiser, except for having my baby 36 years ago today in the old building at 280 W. MacArthur Blvd., which is across the street from this facility. Over six years ago, there was another visit to the emergency room (outpatient visit) for a strained ligament in my left knee. Back in the days while I was in the maternity ward, the hospital food was meh. It was the microwave stuff, which was gross, especially the pancakes that were still frozen. I did not want it reheated - appetite was ruined, so I just settled for a carton of apple juice and cranberry juice. I have no idea what their hospital food is like right now. I just hope it's better than what it was. Forget street parking in this area. Good luck in finding a space for parking. However, they do have garages close by. Public transportation (AC's 51A and 57) are within walking distance to the hospital. The purpose of my visit today was a consultation appointment with my husband in regards to a medical procedure that he needs done at a future date. The hospital employees at the front desk (4th Floor) were friendly and helpful. The wait was not too long to see the doctor. The waiting area has a view of the indoor atrium, which can be soothing for patients and visitors. My husband's doctor provided us the information and options on the inpatient surgery. She answered the questions that my husband had. She did not rush us out of her office and explained everything to us, so we would have a thorough understanding of the medical procedure. Kaiser will eventually contact my husband for the medical procedure. I noticed as we were leaving that security is not as restrictive at the front entrance to this facility. There are no metal detectors to go through (like airports, government buildings, Oracle Arena) and no security personnel screening visitors thoroughly. My rating of this facility is somewhere between three and four stars. Since Kaiser has been my health provider for all these many years, and I have never had bad service when I needed treatment, I'm leaving the rating at four stars. I'll try not to think that this is my 666th review and that Kaiser/Oakland Medical Center can be a devil of a place to visit. Enough said! read more

My family and I are grateful for the counseling and options presented for Mom's heath and quality of life. We have her home now and she is resting peacefully without pain or mental distress. Today we have been waiting for 3 hours in ER....no rooms. Every time you need a prescription filled....25 minute wait. I went to the ER because I felt like i had Strep, i was examined for heart rate & temp very quickly but after receiving a room is when the waiting game started All these random people kept coming back & forth into the room putting stickers on me, exposing my chest, hooking me up to machines.. 20 mins later i was unhooked from the ekg & some other device where i then had to wait another 10 mins for an xray tech.. my nurse lady just left me there waiting, then the xray tech tells me the stickers should have come off too so he can actually XRAY ME! even after my xrays were finished my nurse didn't return to "buzz me" back into the area where my room was smh Finally when the "doctor" came he was in & out on his cell phone & wanted to do everything except a throat culture, i had to ask for it myself! Rather than sending my Rx to the pharmacy to be filled he gives me the paper prescription while i wait another 30 mims to be discharged ON TOP of the 20 mins i spent waiting in the pharmacy. Lastly, while waiting in the pharmacy I decided to use the restroom & to my surprise KILLER KAISER, a hospital, a place that's supposed to have good health habits had NO soap in the bathroom! Not "we're out until the janitor swings back around" but the soap dispenser had been completely removed from the wall and had not been replaced! I had bad experiences with the ER and pediatric departments. I fell when I was pregnant and went to ER as a precaution and they were very disorganized. Lots of finger pointing not sure where I was to go. Labor and delivery didn't want to see me until ER looked at me but ER would not see me until labor and delivery saw me. They tried to leave me out in the hall alone, pregnant and not able to move. As I had injured my shoulder in the fall. They would not even give me an x-ray! 10 months later, my 6 month old baby boy had has cleft lip repair operation. Dr Zim did a great job on the operation but the nursing staff in the pediatrics wing did not know how to feed him afterwards! The operation was on a Friday and "no one was in to help" The stuff was not trained to help, they didn't have the right equipment or care. My baby deserves better!
