There is no collecting $200…read more You go here and you see a monument erected in the name of one of Canada's most famous athletes that never got the chance to fulfill his dream of running across the country to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. His name lives on in many forms, be it the annual Terry Fox charity run or the number of buildings and monuments erected in his honour. This is one of the finest ones I've seen. What makes this monument so grand is the placement. It lies mere feet from the point where his journey was cut short, making it one of the most fitting, poignant, and gripping monuments dedicated to Terry Fox. As a Canadian, or a humanitarian for that matter, you cannot help but be moved.

We sailed about 5hours from Thunderbay, listening to good tunes, enjoying the beautiful scenery with opportunies to be at the helm and participate in some of the rope work trimming the sails. Apon arrival our eyes were BIG with excitement...we knew the afternoon was gonna be a blast. Great hiking, spectacular views, jumping off the dock and hustling back on shore into the toasty sauna :) the food was top notch... I'm talking NICE steaks, corn on the Cobb , a refreshing salad and veggies. Compliments to chef and captain Marek ... He did great on all accounts ... Even played his guitar around the campfire in the evening which we shared with some friendly fun loving folks from the 3 other boats that were visiting Thompson island. Bottom line We all had such a great time... Slept great on the boat got up the next morning, had breakfast , said our fair thee wells and sailed back a different route to Thunder Bay. The weather was fantastic too... With just a couple hours of light sprinkles the first day. If you're into sailing and are intrigued about what Lake Superior has to offer.... You won't be disappointed by this experience that's for sure. Also my father gave me a book to read before I went titled "in the wake up the green storm" by Marlin Bree. Fantastic Little book of a mans' experience on superior that had some spooky moments with the famous green storm but also shares some of the history and charm of some of the islands and land marks you'll sail past including A fair amount on Thompson island! When we arrived, everything was as expected, until our IDs were checked. I truly wish this was not the case, but it seemed like as soon as it was known we were from the states, everything changed. We requested a lake front room, we got the "back 40" overlooking the hospital and parking lots. We got to our room, walked in and it was basically a sauna. I went to the thermostat to turn on the AC, and to my surprise it doesn't work. After bringing this up with the desk staff, it was clear that they did not care. They were completely dismissive. "It is an old building, open a window (only one window had a screen), want a fan, when did you turn the AC on?!? LOL. What an absolute joke!! We were completely dismissed. Be AWARE, please do not book this BS place. You might have no heat, no AC, be in the basement, what a joke. As a side note: Thunder Bay is an absolute joke right now. We stayed one night even though we were booked for two, and we saw Las Vegas drug zombies around. Right in front of us people were falling out. Unreal, and sad. Send this around, give awareness.

Reception staff excellent. No executive lounge but was given breakfast vouchers good for their continental breakfast. The voucher could be used toward main menu items worth $13 CAD. Great food at the restaurant with attentive servers. The Sunday brunch is extensive and we were allowed to use the voucher toward it. However we were misinformed as voucher is only good for continental breakfast, not brunch. The manager made an exception due to misinformation. Kudos to the manager. Room very clean. However, housekeeping did not do a thorough job first night (trash not emptied, short on towels). Also had to call maintenance to fix TV and repair shower handle. Maintenance was very prompt and effective. The hotel just needs a little oversight on small issues like this. Hotel is located in the harbor district and footbridge gives access to downtown. Not sure I would venture there after dark. The Bright restaurant next to hotel is outstanding. Go there. Would stay there again. Keep traveling.

Everything has a charge, they'll nickel and dime you to death here. $10 starting for breakfast might get you a muffin... $25 parking but it's heated underground so I bought that for convenience instead of having to lug the luggage carrier through snow then up stairs into the front foyer ( which really they should have bellboys for that but don't) Honestly I don't know how these big chain hotels think they can drop amenities, gut guest services and charge you on top of the hefty price of a nights stay for less. I'm surprised they don't make you wash the linens when you're done. Being a member means nothing, no perks, no late checkout, unless you're a farmer and think noon is late. LESS FOR MORE pretty much sums it up. Perks? I mean if you're conference is being held here staying here means you don't have to walk across the tracks might be the only perk aside from the view but ya you've gotta pay extra for that too! lol I could go on but it's already 11pm and I've got an early late checkout so.... At breakfast, the boiled eggs were offered both warm (held in water in an electric pot) & cold - they weren't rubbery at all! They had the standard cold cereal, breads, and waffle maker - they should probably dial back the timer on the waffle maker a touch - she gets crisp. The rooms have a door to the hall, as well as a door to the exterior parking. The exterior door is one heck of a step down/ up. With parking spots right at each door. Oddly, there were cars parked in all but one spot - so, the car was put at our room, which had an empty spot. The other room was by the far exit, which is an active drive thru. Yikes. The mobility request to be near an exit door wasn't intended to be in the drive thru! (There are a couple of cement blocks used to keep the cars from squashing you.) I'll note the appreciation of the wall art & the lack of carpet (reason for choosing Super 8 this time). As it runs the same rate, I'd stick with Howard Johnson if traveling with my parents. The Continental breakfast was perfect. I was very happy with the service i received there. People have to understand that Super 8 Motel is not a 5 Star Hotel. At less than $70 per night this place is cleaner than most 4 star rated big name hotels. Did I mention the rooms are clean?? Bed was comfy. Bathroom has full shower and tub. Also clean. I was very happy with my stay here and will book this same motel again next time I visit. Highly recommended.

By the time you hit Marina Park (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/marina-park-thunder-bay) to see the Sleeping Giant, and go to the Terry Fox monument (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/terry-fox-monument-thunder-bay), it is going to add up. Walking distance from the Travelodge Airlane (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/travelodge-hotel-airlane-formerly-airlane-hotel-thunder-bay) is the Enterprise car rental. I gave them a call looking to rent a car for the day to eat some of the costs that were being incurred. I love that they didn't laugh at all when I asked "What's the cheapest car that you could give me today?" Their response actually was "We don't have cheap cars. We have inexpensive ones." Nice. They had a cheap car ready for me in half an hour for the all-in cost of $20, which equates to one cab ride. This decision was a no-brainer. We were able to hit the sights we wanted and also got to the Thunder Bay airport (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/thunder-bay-international-airport-thunder-bay) where we were able to drop off the car without any hassle. Note a couple of things here. Firstly, the drop-off for the keys is inside the airport at the Enterprise counter, not out by the parking lot. Don't bother looking. Secondly, make sure as part of your walk-through on the car, you check that the car has a full tank. I didn't and ended up having to pay for a quarter of a tank that wasn't used by me. Even with that, it was still cheaper than a cab.
