My wife and I are visiting Sydney for the week from the US and thought Kalapani sounded like a fun opportunity to try Nepalese cuisine. We're well traveled and love trying the foods of different cultures to learn more about them, so finding dishes that we have not tried before is always great. Finding dishes we've never even heard of before though...that's rare and special, so we truly appreciated our dinner.
We tried their Momo Jhol, spiced buffalo meat dumplings that are steamed and juicy like Xiao Long Bao and served in a mild, cold curry sauce. Excellent! We'd definitely try them again and with different preps to see which we like the best!
We also got Lamb Kalapani (heavily spiced lamb cubes served on a sizzling platter), chicken tikka masala (one dish we knew we'd like!), and butter naan. The Lamb Kalapani was spiced unlike any Indian dish we've ever tried and really delicious. Just make sure to eat all of it while it's hot, since it gets a bit tough as it sits. The chicken tikka masala was actually a very pleasant surprise. It was prepared substantially different from any we've had before, and very much in a good way!! Scooping it with the naan...yum!!
The staff was also very attentive and helped us understand what we were ordering, so it wasn't a total surprise when it came out. We highly recommend Kalapani for anybody who loves to try new foods, and even new spins on old favorites!! read more
