The teachers are caring, intelligent, patient, and skilled at resolving conflicts between children. The Second Step anti-bullying program is implemented here as well, which I thought was great. There were plenty of arts and crafts to intrigue my daughter, as well as play time both in and out of doors. There are books and audio books to pique your child's interest in reading, and they also have a "lunch bunch" program you can join which helps introduce your child to eating lunch in a school atmosphere. I feel my daughter left Creative Arts with improved social skills, a higher level of confidence, and a definite love of art! I would highly recommend it.

In my child's previous schools, there was ALWAYS an open door and parents had an invite to come in and lead an activity or read a book basically whenever they wanted. You get one night every couple of months where only one parent allowed to come in after hours and see the classroom and learn about what your child is working on. Second red flag: Whenever I would come to pick up my child, the (very young) teachers were huddled together talking and planning their weekends together, periodically stopping to yell at the children from across the room or play ground, and then back to talking about the sushi they were gonna eat. Third red flag: It appears that they only hire very young people. When you pay a large monthly tuition, you expect teachers with some sort of experience of formal education. Only the head teachers are trained in Montessori and the assistant teachers are not. Fourth red flag: they charge out the butt for tuition yet teachers are not paid competitive wages. They are constantly cycling through different teachers, assuming because they aren't paying well enough. It seemed like every week I saw a new teacher there. Lastly, from talking with other parents, they had a 4 year old who was going rampant with biting. Their child was coming home with bites every single day. They showed me pictures and these were BAD bite marks, breaking skin and bruising:

I do not even think this is true- I think they had an admin error. They refused to speak to us on the phone, barely even apologized, then chastised us for getting upset! I would never trust this place with my kids in a million years based on the horrendous disorganization and complete disregard and disrespect for both us and our 3.5 year old. Sure, people say the teachers are great, but what's that worth if a confirmed spot in the class is retractable via email?!

My son comes home with a massive amount of art every few months, so I know he's engaging in great creative activities during the day. His teachers are truly caring and sweet - they even created a lovely binder full of photos for our parent-teacher day. My son has a lot of friends who he is excited to see. The curriculum is well thought out and incorporates our values. The other parents are wonderful. The school's hours work well with our work schedules. My son eats healthy and nutritious food thanks to the FareStart catering. And the location is wonderful - right next to Green Lake so the kids have easy access to the outdoors! Woodland Park Coop checks all the boxes. Kids are not just allowed, but facilitated in genuinely exploring and experimenting and just being kids together. The multi-age program enables younger and older kids to learn from each other in ways same-age groups just don't. The community fostered in this space feels like home. Families linger to spend time after class is over, we meet up on off-days, we potluck together, and we help each other in our homes. This is no ordinary preschool experience. This is our children's school, but it's also ours. We learn together and we create it. It is us and we are it. We partner with the Teachers and the Parent Educator, we each have a job to keep the school running. We take care of each other and of each others' children. This is a community of mutual-aid and genuine generosity. I'm so happy we still have 3 more years to go because there's a Kindergarten program, too!! You couldn't ask for a better, more engaged and aware kindergarten teacher than Teacher Quinn. And because we all overlap on the playground every day, the youngest kids get to see the oldest kids engaged in the deep conversations, the complex play, and the hard work that they do. Naturally, we were skittish after the previous experience, however, we instantly fell in love with how caring and nurturing the teachers and staff were with her - making her feel immediately welcome and special. It is difficult leaving your child with just anyone and trusting that she will be loved and cared for in the same way you would care for her. Phinney Ridge CDC did just that. They encouraged her full personality, helping her gain further confidence to speak her mind, while being respectful and helping to teach her the necessary early childhood education skills through interests that she and her classmates shared. The only reason she is no longer at the school is because of our recent move to a new neighborhood. Had we remained in that area of town, she would have continued there until kindergarten.
