We were excited to eat at a new restaurant in town, even more excited since it was Indian. The place was clean, the food smelled good. The prices were a little steep, which at first was okay. We got our food about 5 minutes after ordering. The rice was hard and getting cold. I ordered what I think was called the malai kofta... With the veggie croquettes. And my boyfriend ordered the mushroom dish. They served us about a cup. A few bites into the food and we started feeling sick. And it only got worse. We didn't finish our food, and it wasn't good enough to take home. It wasn't busy, and our waitress came to us twice, to see if we wanted anything else, and to bring us our check. She saw we had extra food and didn't offer a take out box. When we got the check we noticed the prices they charged were higher than the prices listed in the menu. My meal was 13.95, and they charged it $16, for a cup of sauce and four thumb sized logs. We were feeling too ill to complain to them so we left a note. We felt icky all night. We're never going there again. We also recently got word that a few people we know who ate there also got sick. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. If you want good affordable Indian food, go to Prahbas. read more

WOW! This is a wonderful addition to the Hilo dining scene. Yesterday was my first visit. I had the chicken Vindaloo for lunch and it was heavenly. The rice is just the right texture for this. Food was amazing. Well seasoned chicken tandoori, same with the lamb. We ordered the hot ones, but I would recommend the mild for those who can't handle very spicy food (I was sweating a bit after eating those chicken tandoori). The chicken pakora and veggie pakora were very well made and the green sauce/mint chutney was well seasoned too. The chicken vindaloo was well seasoned and the heat levels were not too high but you could feel a tingle with every bite. Our server never checked on us or refilled our water, and someone from the staff kept channel surfing Netflix or YouTube on their tv ... which I found very distracting during dinner. I'm in love. I haven't eaten a lot of Indian food in my time, but so far Kamana Kitchen has been the best tasting for the best price. I got the lamb curry special. For $12.95 it's one of the pricer options for lunch, but is still a steal in comparison to other Hilo joints. Along with the lamb curry came rice, pita, salad, dal, vegetable curry, and achar which made for enough food for two people. I really liked the dal and the two curries. For someone who can't handle a ton of spice in their food this place nailed the level of heat. It was hot but not TOO hot. I do wish they'd been better about refilling the water though, I finished my glass before I'd finished half of my dish. read more

YUM! We were in a group of 6 with two meat eaters and the rest of us vegetarian. The vegetarians decided to do things family-style so we all got to try a bit of everything. We ordered the veggie samosas, vegetable korma, baigan bharta, vegetable biryani, some paneer dish in a cream sauce, some naan, and some rice. No idea what the meat-eaters ordered. Everything was delicious! We ordered everything medium spicy and it was really hot! Keep that in mind if you are sensitive to spicy food. Lots of water was needed to put out the collective fires burning in our mouths and the staff kept the water coming. We all left the restaurant stuffed but happy. Would definitely recommend this place to fellow Yelpers. Sadly they do not accept American Express. That was a bummer. read more

I love their lentil soup. Great flavors, good portion and a good price. I've been trying to duplicate it at home but can't quite nail the exact flavor of it. I've eaten at both the Kona and Hilo locations and it is always really good. The lunch special is a great deal and even better with the kamaaina discount they offer. The service at the Hilo location was a bit slow when they opened but it has improved greatly since. I've never had an entree I didn't like and the naan bread is killer. I highly recommend this place if you like Indian food or want to experience new flavors. I think it's great that more locals are open to experiencing new flavors and healthier food options than your dime a dozen plate lunches that dominate this town. All we need is a legit Mediterranean joint now. read more

Sudden urge of eating Indian food was fulfilled at Kamana Kitchen in Hilo, Big Island. Kamana has other locations in Honolulu, Oahu and Kihei, Maui but we were fortunate to have an opportunity to eat Indian food from a place that is far far away from mainland, considering limitations on ingredients and spices, this place ensured our taste buds would be satisfied. We absolutely loved staff's kind attitude and joyful gestures, their service is quick and ambiance settles in with you quicker than food goes into your stomach. As a vegetarian, this place became one of my favorite to go for lunch and dinner (even though I am in Hawaii for short term). I ordered Daal Tarka (Yellow Daal Soup) with rice and samosas. My husband ordered Chicken Biriyani, he was enthused and very content. We don't have enough words to say about this place but if you do have sudden craving for Indian food or if you are vegetarian - it's a must try place. read more

Before coming to Hilo I have never tasted Indian food and a brother of mine who is part Indian mentioned Kamana Kitchen to me. At first I was hesitant, but after my first spoonful of Chicken Marsala and Garlic Naan Bread, I was SOLD. If I had the option to eat there everyday I would. The Bollywood music and videos on the tv pretty much set the Atmosphere. I also love how they have a variety of Heats, so you have the option of either having your food Spicy or Mild. I was extremely impressed. The staff were some of the nicest people, with a big smile on their faces. They were also very sweet to my daughter. What a lovely find in this little town of Hilo! We were craving Indian food after trying out all other cuisines that are more easily available in Big Island and this restaurant hit the spot! To start off, I could go a whole evening drinking gallons of their Chai, perfectly spiced, amazingly creamy! I ordered their vegetarian thaali. The heat in every item was just the right amount and the portion size was generous enough to feed an extremely hungry tummy! The thaali came with crispy appetizers (samosas & pakoras), a light, fresh salad, 3 curries, rice, Naan, papad, tomato chutney and a deliciously decadent rice pudding. The servers were quick and polite, the ambiance was comfortable; I would definitely recommend trying out Kamana on your next visit to Hilo! read more

This is a negative review I never thought I'd write for this restaurant. My wife and I have eaten here about twice a month for the past year. The food is good and the price is reasonable. However, after a bad experience last night I'll never return. I ordered the tiki masala dish, and upon the first bite, the food was so hot it seared the inside of my mouth/tongue. I sipped cold water and let the dish cool, but the pain was too distracting to eat more than two bites. I flagged down the server to complain, but there was a language/communication barrier. After three attempts of saying it wasn't too spicy - it was the temperature, I was met with a round of "Is this your first time here?" and "We have to heat the food before we serve it." I then asked for the manager and repeated my complaint... "Well, what do want me to do about it?" I said,"Don't charge me for the item, and apologize." Common sense, right? No... "the best I can do is take 50% off the item." I paid the bill and walked out, vowing never to return. It's the next day, and my mouth is still sore. A couple of customer service notes for the Kamana Kitchen: 1. The customer is always right. 2. Don't charge them for a dish that isn't right. 3.Warn them if a dish is going to be hot - temperature wise - and to let it cool. 4. Monitor your food temperature with a food thermometer so this doesn't happen again. 5. Smile read more

Wow we ate here yesterday and today I keep thinking about it. It was that good. Everything we got was amazing. The veg samosa were delicious but I only get 2 bites because my children devoured them. Wow. The food here is absolutely delicious! I honestly can't believe it's in Hilo. We ordered the non-vegetarian Royal Plate for $22.87 and it fed my husband and I completely and we have leftovers. The quality of the chicken tasted on point, the sauce on the chicken masala was perfect and so was the curry on the lamb. I love how the meat is just drenched in sauce and bursting with flavor. The samosa paired with the sweet sauce was amazing, it might have been my favorite part of the meal. This place is naan ( and the naan was soft and tasty) mistakenly delicious. Not worth going out of your way for. If anyone thinks it's the best Indian food in America, they probably have never tried any other restaurants. The gravy was primarily salt and cream. This place is exactly what my friend and I wanted. We were craving some authentic Indian food and figured we couldn't find it here in Hilo, but we were SO wrong. After a yelp search brought up this place we headed straight there and were not disappointed. We were welcomed instantly by the hostess and seated at a good table. The menu had lots of choices on it with many pictures and full descriptions of each item. We thought the prices were reasonable and ordered the Chicken Makhani, Garlic Naan, Vegetable Samosas, and Basmati Rice. The samosas came out within 5 minutes and the rest came out just as we were finished with the appetizer. ALL TASTED GREAT. We got the chicken with the heat at Medium and it was perfect for us. Everything was well seasoned with full flavor. Portion size was perfect. The two of us shared everything and left quite satisfied with just a little box of leftover chicken and rice. We also ordered pistachio ice cream which was the perfect ending. Service was wonderful and the waitress made sure we had everything we needed. Our waters were constantly refilled, which is very important to me. They were able to answer our questions about the food and even let us taste the Mango Lassi because we were kind of on the fence with it. It tasted great. The entire bill (with the one entree, appetizer, rice, naan, dessert, and one drink) only came out to about $29. Much less than we expected for the amount of food we ordered. I will definitely be returning some time soon and would recommend this to anyone who's looking for authentic Indian or just food with a lot of great flavor. Horrible seating system. I've eaten here before, and the food isn't all that bad. But they have no system in place to check people in and allocate tables. You can't call ahead to reserve tables. When I called, they said 'Oh, for two... we can seat you as soon as you arrive'. We get there within 10 minutes. Wait for 30 minutes, watch parties arriving after us get seated (bigger in size), and when I ask them why, the answer was 'we don't owe you an explanation'. That's the worst way to treat a customer. I will never be back. Horrendous customer service. read more
