Got our first dinner of 2019 here. Lots of places were closed, but Kamana Kitchen luckily wasn't. The portions are large (leftovers guaranteed). I ordered veggie biryani based on the reviews here, it was good - not the best I ever had but good. Husband got chicken vindaloo and tandoori chicken. Both very really good - only drawback were the bones left in the tandoori chicken. Service was good and friendly just bit slow, but the place was full. I would come back! read more

Food is ok. Worst service ever. Waiter didn't give us menu and we had to grab them in the front desk ourselves. Waited 15 minuets for the waiter to show up take order. We ordered a beer and he didn't bring it for another 10 minuets. We had to talk to another waitress to get us the beer. Never refilled our water, he walked by several times and did other tables. Service is always great and the food used to be dependably delicious. We used to go 3-4 times a month but the last couple of times we visited, a few of the dishes changed in color and taste. The first time we thought maybe it was a fluke or a new cook. We ended up speaking to the owner who said they like to try different things to established and well-liked dishes. Not sure why they would want to experiment with a good thing, but I know we'll miss or regular lunches there with the friendly staff. read more

Incredible food, incredible service, unfortunate location tucked away in a corner of a strip mall, but I'd love for this place to succeed by way of word of mouth, because it is so terrific, in an ideal world, it could. Unfortunately, this is Hilo, but high quality world cuisine outside of the Asia-Pacific Rim is so desperately needed here, for all, but especially us adventurous foodies. It felt like an *experience*, which is what a great dining excursion is all about. The food is delicious, authentic and the portions are very generous. We had the Non-Vegetarian Platter, which is a wonderfully cohesive sampler tray, definitely gives a you the best of everything. And I, a pretty big Indian food afficionado, was introduced to three new offerings via this platter, which I really appreciated. My only criticisms would be the pricing- a little steep, but the sheer quality of the food and the portion size softened the blow to the wallet a bit. I also really wanted some good paneer cheese, and was surprised it wasn't included in the platter, perhaps it was in the vegetarian, cannot recall. The restaurant itself it huge and has nice, very quiet ambience. The intermittent playlist of Bollywood dance music on the big flat screen tv added a nice touch. Waitress was attentive, quick, and wonderfully welcoming and kind. I highly recommend this place and pray they will flourish beyond measure and remain in Hilo. All the best. read more

I really enjoy Kamana Kitchen. The Hilo Restaurant is not as flavorful as the Kona location (which I give a 5 star). The TV is usually playing Bollywood Hindi music videos that can be overwhelming and I try to sit with my back to it. My favorite dish is the Chicken Makhani - it's a cream tomato based curry with fire grilled butter chicken. I love mine spicy but they can make it mild and it is very mild! read more

This restaurant was tucked into a hallway of an older strip mall, but the interior was clean and nicely decorated. Service was excellent, the food was superb, my husband thinks ketchup is hot sauce, so he asked for the lamb tiki masala to be prepared "very mild" and that is exactly what they made: he was thrilled and I liked his dish even more than my chicken curry "mild". We had naan, jasmine rice, and enough leftover for another meal! Again, service and food could not have been better! I wish we lived closer. read more

Amazing. Fantastic food full of flavor! I miss my friends on the mainland that make Indian food all the time (they're from India so as authentic as it gets on this side of the globe) and Kamana reminds me of all those fantastic meals with even better friends. When the friends made it, I couldn't choose the spiciness, which ranged from burn your face to nuclear melt down, but Kamana Kitchen does ask how spicy you want it and from my experience it's been very consistent. Visits to Hilo location were in Feb, Mar 2015. Reservations are taken only for 10+ people. We had to wait 20+ minutes in one visit, 10-15 during others. Atmosphere inside had been hot: no AC. Thankfully it was not humid or stifling. Ceiling fans, few those are, had been turned on. After most of the crowd had left, near closing time, ambient atmosphere became much more tolerable. There had been only 1-3 people on wait staff. Given the space has 100+ capacity, had to wait long for service & to ask for same things repeatedly. Only saving grace was staff had been friendly. Vegetable dishes are overwhelmed by the spices put, regardless of "spicy"ness (mild or medium, which really should be "hot"ness) ordered. Unless I knew what was ordered, I could not tell which dish I was tasting: Navrattan Korma (mixed vegetables), Saag Paneer (spinach & cheese). Daal Makhani had the consistency of thick paste, as if it was reheated after a day. Vegetable Pakoda was not fully cooked; could see somewhat raw batter. Raita was thin like water & very sour. *bleh* Pistachio Ice Cream looked decent but was not; it was colored, flavorless thing. Then again I did not gave it the chance to soften; when I tried it was hard as ice. (Somebody else liked Mango Lassi, FWIW.) Chicken in chicken dishes was dry, more dry in some (Chicken Pakoda) than others (Chicken Madrasi). Chicken dishes gave the impression as if chicken was partially or fully cooked separately and was later mixed/(re)heated with spices & sauces. That is to say chicken did not seem to impart its own taste to the dish. (Better chicken dishes -- chicken is not dry & dish does tatse like chicken -- can be found at Sky Garden (dinner), Kuhio Grill, Cafe Miyo, Yen's Cafe, etc.) Lamb Kebab were bit tough but ok. Also to note that I had not found any other restaurant in Hilo that serves lamb or mutton. Rice served with some of the dishes are more than enough. OTOH, "Buna Shrimp" (sautéed shrimp) was exactly as written on the tin. No spices overpowered shrimp itself; it was not dry. Next time I will just order this or another shrimp dish. I had kind of noticed this restaurant before when stopping by the nearby health foods store. Husband and I ended up here after getting a miss walking in at a reservations-only place for brunch - oops. I love the lunch variety special at Kamana Kitchen! Pick an entree, which comes with rice, naan, dal. Vegetarian- and vegan-friendly. Husband picked the channa masala while I went with saag paneer; we split an order of vegetarian samosas and garlic naan. Both entrees were tasty though I preferred his entree and the accompaniments over my selected entree. Next time I will try ordering off the regular menu - just to sample. read more

By far one of the best tasting food hilo has to offer. We went for our 20th anniversary with some friends and our girls. Was a little apprehensive, because of the spice factor. However, the atmosphere was nice we got there a little early. Ordered some appetizers and the garlic Naan and that was out of this world. When our dinner came...we were blown away by the portion size, the taste and the idea of "family style" servings where we could share with everyone on the table. Given the awesome reviews Kamana, has, I have to assume I went there on an off-day. Nonetheless, I was left unimpressed. Service - Service was atrocious. There were 2-3 servers that I could see, as well as one busser. When we first arrived we stood around for about 3-4 minutes before even being acknowledge (there is no sign saying "seat yourself" or anything similar). Besides our table of 2, there were 4 more tables with 1-2 people each, and service was slow. We waited ~35 minutes for our meals. To-go orders placed after us were being filled before us. Our waters were refilled once, at the end of the meal. Service TL;DR - Prepare to be ignored, consider calling in a to-go order instead. Food - Food was only ok. Indian food is my favorite ethnic cuisine and I have it as often as possible. The paneer in the paneer tikki masala was not as soft and delicate as I am used to, and it's mild flavor was lost in the overpowering sauce. The croquettes in malai kofta were very mushy, which I was not expecting. It was an unpleasant texture. I'm not shy around spicy food whatsoever and I could not handle the spiciness of these dishes. I like spicy food and when given the option, I always order med-spicy. We ordered our meals medium spicy and at first, the sauces were quite tasty! However, the food ended up being SO SPCIY that less than half-way through we could no longer taste anything or enjoy our food. The samosas were good. Food TL;DR - Like spicy food? Glad to see a very good Indian restaurant in Hilo. Got the paneer tikka masala spicy.... wasn't that spicy but it was very good. Portion size slightly on the small side served in beautiful hammered copper dish. Basmati rice cooked perfectly. Garlic naan bread... never had better. Not cheap considering portion size, 15.95 for main entree, but was worth it. Also had a masala chai, served unsweetened. Sadly I did not experience a good meal. Dahl was almost as good as tap water, thin and without flavor. Same for the poorly executed mint chutney. They wouldn't make a vegetable masala for me so I ended up ordering a vegetable curry, hot. They forgot to use chilies and the dish was a poor excuse for a curry.
