My only complaint was there were many homeless people inside and outside of the library. More than half of the tables at the courtyard were occupied by them. And the smell of weed was everywhere...

I forgot that the entrance to the free parking lot is on Harding Avenue. There's some stairs to climb to the entrance facing Koko Head Avenue. I got a space in the shade (from the building) since it was late afternoon! Inside, it was nicely air-conditioned and had a convenient restroom. The right side was the Children's area and the left side housed Adult reading material. I was so happy to find the book that I was looking for! I was able to use the self checkout machine, but there was a line for human assistance. I needed to "desensitize" my book so that the alarm wouldn't go off. I sat at a table to read and a staff approached me and said that he was able to help me now. I told him I could just sit and read a bit... the book was getting good! I heard the warning announcement... fifteen minutes until closing. I decided to head on out and desensitized my book on the way out. Downstairs, in the meeting room, there was a program going on! How to make Pasta Jewelry - for free! I actually didn't use any pasta, but made a bracelet with all kinds of beads - even glow-in-the-dark stars! I always wanted to make a red, gold, and black bracelet! LOL! Anyway, it was a very productive experience! I found two things that I didn't expect to find! I'll be back!

We decided to stop by this location since they are open on Saturdays. It was a quiet morning and the library itself was also very quiet. They are limiting the number of visitors in order to be considerate of COVID-19 procedures. Everyone on staff was extremely helpful and kind. I applied for a library card on the spot and took less than 5 minutes. They have a great selection and process. Whenever a book is taken off the shelf, you place it into a bin to be disinfected and stored. All-in-all, thankful to have a great library.

Kalihi-Palama Public Library is a gem of a community resource nestled in the hustle and bustle of…read morethe Kalihi-Palama area. Unlike some other public library branches I've never experienced a lack of parking. Of course , the main branch due to it's midtown location has no public parking but that's what urbanization brings. The library itself has all the typical modern resources one would expect in this age if technology which enables patrons to gain equal access despite its location and physical facilities which although over 60 years old provides all the amenities of a state-wide library system. While other really newly built and upgraded branches have the luxury of large spaces, carpeting, spread out study areas, and "cool" ambience, Kalihi-Palama's staffing "quality": friendly, approachable, and willing to go the extra mile. This staffing "quality" extends to the custodial services, security, and part-time student helpers who restock the books. The donated book sales shelves are bright and well-organized and the same is true of the free magazine display. The new book selection is second to none and the online interlibrary book reservation option for new and current selections is available via the in-house computers and home digital instruments. Beyond books, one can borrow a ukulele, and get personal computer, smart phone tutorial assistance by appointment. What's not to like? One couldn't ask for more! I

Yesterday I went in on a whim to ask abt my account (I wasn't able to log in online a week or so ago). Didn't have my card OR ID (smh) but the librarians could look up my account via my account number. But of course the minute I confidently said I have it memorized i couldn't say it. (SMH again) Thankfully I have my app on the phone which has the barcode, but I had to log on to the library WIFI to access it (thank goodness for prefilled userid and password). Long story short, both librarians accommodated my situation and helped me borrow books and cancel requests etc. i realized later I can cancel the requests myself on the computers (which was how I placed the requests in the first place SMH x3) and via the self-service machine! Because you can enter the account number manually. Anyway. Best library. Cool a/c. Lots of tables and computers (I saw an uncle playing solitaire). Very quiet and calm, until I came along, that is.

I've been here in the conference room for a presentation in the past... and now, I had a chance to visit again and return books from other libraries! It's very convenient with free parking, cool air-conditioning, and pleasant staff! The interior is bright, clean, modern, and spacious! I will return to browse the book sale area and regular books!

The entrance to the free covered parking is on Algaroba Street. I didn't see any homeless people in the area as stated in other reviews. Service was odd. I tried to used the Family Restroom, but it seemed to be locked. I asked the library staff if I needed a key. The staff pointed in another direction and said that the restroom was there. Ok... I caught the elevator upstairs where the Adult Section is. I didn't find the book I wanted, but did see a Korean Department! Lots of patrons were using the computers at desks and others were at tables - sitting and reading. Downstairs was a spacious area for children to listen to stories or for groups to do performances. Overall, it was a clean, organized, bright place! I'll be back!

Have been borrowing ebooks for years with my Hawaii State library card, without going into the…read morelibrary. Surprised when I received notice that my library card was expired and needed to be renewed in person. Easily made down to the McCully Moiliili library where I found the renewal process easy and quick. While there enjoyed seeing how nice the last renovation was. Reminded how many services there are to the public. I actually read a hardcopy of newspaper! Found some DVDs to rent... oldies but goodies yet I had never seen them before! Stayed to play on my phone a little as I was few minutes early for next appointment. Enjoyed the air conditioning! Thanked the nice staff at the library for their hard work. It was a fun and informative field trip to the library! Almost forgot how convenient they are!

Library services in Honolulu, Hawaii…read more.. Since I signed up for our local Summer Reading Program (June 1 to July 31, 2026), I thought that I should look for a good book or two to read. I think I used to visit Liliha Library with my mom and three sisters. I should ask them - because I'm sure that we went to the main library by 'Iolani Palace. I'm not sure about Liliha Library. Parking here is much better than at the main Library. Just drive up the ramp and park on the upper level for free, then walk down the stairs. There are a couple of ADA stalls on the ground floor, at the entrance. The interior has been nicely renovated. It's spacious, clean, and bright. I really liked the Chinese area and noticed that there are Chinese decorations on some of the signs - like the ones for the restrooms! Service was very helpful and efficient. I was asked if I needed help. I said that I was looking for the Hawaiian word of the week. It's part of the activities os the Summer Reading Program. The librarian pointed to a table and walked me over. Ooh... Besides the word of the week, there was a BINGO card for extra prizes and entries into the drawing for the trip on Alaska/Hawaiian Airlines! Yay! For sure, I'll be back for the next word of the week and maybe one of the free classes. One of the BINGO activities is to attend a program at the library, so... I'll return soon!

Yesterday, we exchanged books and we were delighted to join in on the special program for May Day. We learned to make origami stars for paper leis. The kids were intently folding paper. The parents were enjoying the activity as much as the kids. The library has a nice kid's area with a train table, Lego table and other interactive toys. The other side of the library is quiet with adult books and computer work space. The library offers videos as well. I was happy to find a complete set of local bus schedules near the front entrance. The staff is friendly. The self check out is quick and easy. We also order our books on line and they are ready when we arrive The architecture of the library is tropical mid century modern. Parking is limited. But we can generally find a spot. There are rest rooms near the entrance.

They clearly work hard to maintain fun and creative community events and classes, and the staff is very patient with kids. One of my favorite events was when a local high school symphony performed in the children's area. There's a self-checkout desk, a large kids' play area, regular kid crafts and activities, board games (you can check out a bunch to play while there), computers, DVDs, automatic book renewal, and free/cheap printing. I liked when they had a bunch of stencils out one time! The staff is helpful, friendly, and available, but unobtrusive. I really appreciate that they welcome everyone and also speak up to ensure all the patrons are respectful and the space in front and around the library is safe.
