Unfortunately, our first experience at the Kapolei Library Keiki Story Time was pretty disappointing. The event is listed online as 9:00-9:30 AM, so my daughter and I made sure to arrive early and be ready on time, along with several other families. Story time didn't actually begin until around 9:10, which may not sound like a huge delay, but with little ones, 10 minutes can make a big difference. My daughter was ready and excited when we arrived, but the extra waiting made her increasingly anxious and by the time it started, she no longer wanted to sit and participate nicely. I also felt it was unfair to the families who made the effort to arrive promptly. The room was also extremely hot and uncomfortable. It honestly felt like there was little to no A/C, and I noticed a staff member at a nearby desk had a fan blowing directly on her. Had we known ahead of time that the room would be that warm, we could have at least prepared for it or decided whether it would be comfortable enough for our child. I was really looking forward to making Keiki Story Time something fun for my daughter and me, especially since this was our first visit, so this was a big bummer. Between the late start and the uncomfortable heat, I unfortunately don't think we'll be returning. read more

Clean, quiet two-story library with an elevator and plenty of parking. Went on a Saturday and it wasn't crowded at all. Bathrooms were clean, and security was present. Staff were friendly and helpful. Loved the free books and magazines -- even found a few gems! They also sell books and DVDs for $1-$3 that I saw and only accepts cash. There are computers to use and a copy machine for a small fee (it was out of service during my visit). Self check-out makes borrowing super easy. read more

Nice local two story Library in Kapolei. Husband and I go in here at least once a month. The children and adult section on separate floors allowing programs for children. Staff are friendly and helpful when searching for books. The online system for extending the time for a book, checking availability or requesting books from other locations. So nice to not have purchase books online for bookclub. read more

We started coming to the keiki story time over the summer, and it's become such a perfect outing for my pre-K. As a stay-at-home mom, it's a wonderful enrichment activity to add to my son's curriculum. The fact that it's a free event is such a plus! I love the stories and themes they offer, and the activity after story time is a fun bonus that my son always looks forward to. The library is clean, organized, and welcoming--truly a great resource for families in the community. Highly recommend for anyone with little ones! read more

Always enjoyed going to the Kapolei library going up and now I'm coming with my 3 year old son. This review is for the children's section. It's cute that there are decorations hanging from the ceiling, my son especially loved the Very Hungry Caterpillar and dinosaur ones. I like that the book return was a bin, making it easy for kids to put the book in should we read some at the library. There is a section for board books and a shelf by "type of book" such as Disney, Barbie, etc. The tables and chairs are children sized as well. It is freezing in there so be sure to bring a jacket if you're planning on hanging out. I especially like that the bathrooms are clean and there is security. read more

Loved going to the library here. Try not to go too often because my kids are young and CHAOTIC. Somethings are a bit outdated here and the new systems sometimes glitches. Had issues with renewing. Most librarians are so nice. Some I can tell doesn't like children which I get they can be too noisy in the library. Had an encounter with the rudest librarian I've ever met. I used to work for Hawaii State Library and had dealt with all kinds of worker. Think there's still a lot of room for improvement here. read more

This is the worst run library I have ever been to. I have been bringing my kids here for a year. There are no labels on the book shelves. Their excuse is always the same, "the kids take them off." They can decorate, hang things from the ceiling but can't figure out how to label the rows so people can actually find books. The staff is working on personal things on the computers every time I go. Trying to find a book is a waste of time. They say "their budget was cut" but all I have ever seen anyone do, except the staff checking books in and out, is sit at a computer doing their personal stuff. read more

When I first moved to Hawaii 8 years ago, the Kapolei Library was my first place that I had went to. I had joined the book club when I first moved here and enjoyed it so much. I read titles that I never would think to pick out. There was a few year period where I had stopped going to this location because I had moved and at the time I did not have a vehicle. I came back pre pandemic and rejoined the book club. It is great to be back. The library has a vast selection of books and the staff are friendly. I also am back with the book club. This is a great way to meet and interact with new people. I highly recommend. read more

It an awesome place to hang out and read books, study for an exam, etc...due to this pandemic, you have to be vaccinated and they want to see your car for verification to enter, or maybe see your latest Covid 19 test. Yes, you read right. $1 to rent the entire collection of "Stairway to Heaven." Rain your my Korean version of Justin Timberlake. If it's not available you can RSVP it and they will deliver it to the nearest library. You can get notified through the mail. 4. Spring and Summer Reading Program They have adult, young adults, children, and babies reading programs. This year for the adults they offered $50 gift cards to Target and Safeway or an ipod shuffle. Plus there was a weekly prize when you turned it in. 5. Air Condition Spend some quality time with your family during these hot summer days and dive into a book. I think the Kapolei Library has the 2nd biggest childrens section in the state. 6. Forget RedBox or Blockbuster express You can rent a DVD for $1 for the whole week. 7. Free Magazines The nex location it's at the front of the young adult section. 8. Entertainment Usually held on the weekends. They offer a mixture of entertainment during the weekends. This summer they have had a Zumba, Japanese drums, Mad Science of Hawaii, information about hurricanes, just a variety of differnt venues for differnt people. 9. 35 cents library bags These things are durable. They have never let me down by breaking on me. Great investment to carry your books. Purchase them at the check out line. 10. Free Interenet All you need is a library card and your pin to sign in to use the library computer. Remember to silence your phone or don't even attempt to use it in the library. The security guards have lighting speeds and catch me every time. So save the humilation and step outside to make the phone call. The staff here is so helpful and seem to enjoy their job. This was not my first time at this Library itself, however the last time I was there I wasn't even aware it was a library. As you walk in it's a huge room with a lot of activity going on. I brought my granddaughter there for a story or play time and she had an absolute blast. The staff here are so friendly, helpful, kind and genuine. It was great to be able to find this kind of assistance. The toys that they laid out we're so enjoyable not just by the children, but by the adults as well. There are such a huge variety of books that we had a difficult time limiting what we would bring home to read. I'm so excited to be able to bring her here one to two times per week to do different activities it really helps having something to do that doesn't cost a fortune, well this doesn't cost anything. I also appreciate the assistance of the staff not only during the play time, but even after when we were checking out books and they were so willing to assist us. read more

Libraries are a worth of knowledge for anyone. Kapolei library was a blessing on disguise for the 2nd city. Two levels of reading and working space for an individual to grasp more wisdom and imagine what you can gain from researching the many resources available for you. I like to just get a really good book find a comfortable space and read. Let your imagination wonder to the world you are reading about. They have reading events and culture events also. I love how they incorporate that for interested individuals to learn more. Hours are great and I know this location is use by the schools in the area and the residents. Sure, Free Wi-Fi, but when your laptop dies it's all over -- No outlets for the public at any of the tables. We sat in the young adult section to be away from cute, but loud and distracting little kids. Security is everywhere and constantly walking around watching people. Won't be going back. read more

So far so good. It's probably like every other library except with MORE cavities seeing that the place is really huge. Only problem was... the directions on Google maps. It said that the "entrance point" was on HAUMEA but it's actually off of MANAWAI STREET. It looks as if there's 2 entrances to the library. One from the street and another from the Parking lot. Right now, we're here to check out a spring break event they're having for the kids. The more books you read and enter in, the more prizes you receive. read more

Went here the other day to print stuff out from my email. The lady at the counter was very nice when I asked how to use the computer, due to having to put in a passcode. I didn't know that your passcode on your library card is the last 4 numbers of the phone number you used when you signed up for the card. Next I went over to the computer and printed my papers out. All they ask is a 15 cent donation for all printed paper. Thank you again kapolei library for allowing me to use your computer and printer! read more

Our first visit to the Kapolei library and we had a great time! I've heard so many great things from friends who live in the area and it didn't disappoint. My two little girls don't start school until the end of August and are in need of some brain stimulation. FREE PARKING: We often visit the main library Downtown and having free parking was wonderful! I'm always worrying about forgetting about our meter expiring and getting a parking ticket. There's a huge lot with ample free parking out back. FREE BOOKS: I love free things and the ability to borrow unlimited free library books is amazing! As a kid it feels like you just got $100! I know my kids aren't going to be able to read all the books we borrow but this age is very much about teaching them to love reading. My Grandmother Aiko passed away last year and the greatest gift she gave me, other than a penchant for freshly baked cookies, is a love of reading. Every two weeks she'd take me to the library when I was a kid and I'd devour book after book after book. The children's room at Kapolei library is huge and I was actually pleasantly surprised by the variety. I was able to find almost every book on my list for my 11-year old son as well as a ton of audio books for my daughters to read in the car. FREE DREAMS: I know that people complain a lot about America and all it's problems, but every time I go to the library with my children I feel like we're the luckiest people on the planet. How many children around the world aren't given the gifts of education and the joy of reading? We get to enjoy the dreams and imaginations of so many amazing authors through our public library system. Libraries are a gift so be sure to enjoy them with your family! Ah the public library system. I haven't been to one in a while I had never thought of the public library as one to hang around and kill time. But here I was stopping off at Kapolei Public Library. I wanted to the peace and quiet to do some writing. This two story library is pretty fabulous, although going up and down the stairs with little kids trying to pass you isn't too much fun. I am beginning to revisit the public library system as a means of an alternative to just sitting at home and trying to do what I normally do at either Starbucks or just anywhere where I can to find time to write. If you are in the area, this library is great. Quiet and can help you put yourself in a good mood. The books here can be limiting in choice, but more often than not, you can find whatever you need here. I do love getting into a good book, whenever I get a chance to. This place is pretty much the go-to place, if you are just stuck of ideas on what to do, come over here. They have dvd's that are totally cheaper than Blockbuster and Netflix, but you do need to return them after a week. That's the only crappy part. Love the air conditioning though. I guess that's why a lot of people come here during the summer months. I would too. Just like hanging out at the mall, only difference is plenty of books and its alot more quiet here. Libraries have their place in society and I am glad I am revisiting and rediscovering this library as a means of making use of the facilities before something happens. This library is well maintained and pretty much spotless. Quite immaculate indeed. I never really had to use the librarian's help to facilitate my need to get a book, when I can just browse the category I need and find a random book in the subject and find a possible gem among the others. Time can be slow here, especially if you are bored and not mentally engaged with what you were going to do here in the first place. Do not overlook your public library system, like I do. It's one of those places where you may need them when you least expect it. Overall, this is a low cost place to spend your time, if you need to. While you don't really need to borrow anything, it helps if you are needing the item more than you want to and need to finish it at home. Directly across the Kapolei community park and near by the Kapolei shopping center, this library is just the place to fit my needs, when shopping and the movies just ain't what it used to be anymore. (This was my first job... when I was 14, lol.) This library is still pretty new... so of course it's very clean. But they maintain the building very well. Inside & Out-- it looks great! The AC is perfect. It isn't freezing cold inside :) And it definitely helps when studying here, because when it's hot and humid, its difficult concentrating on anything. There is ample parking and it is centrally located in Kapolei. You can enter from either freeway exit with an equivalent distance. The ONLY complaint that I have is that sometimes there's people who are "space-wasters". They aren't studying or reading... they're sleeping! read more

This is my kid's favorite library. It's so much bigger and newer than most of the other ones. Their children's section is extensive, so much so that my kids monopolize all my time there that I haven't really gotten a chance to explore the rest of the library. There are plenty of tables, chairs, and reading spaces - perfect for my kids since they simply clear the entire shelf of Disney Cars, Frozen and Hello Kitty books and start reading right then and there. Parking spaces are a little narrow but workable. It's super crowded during breaks or special events though. We just went during spring break and it was busy since they had an event with live bunnies. We are participating in their Spring Reading program where the kids log their reading and earn small prizes. read more

I like that this library is very prompt on opening their doors in the morning. 10AM. If you don't like the stairs, they have an elevator on the Leeward side of the library, but beware....the elevator goes up slow and does a startling drop at when it reaches its destination going up, which makes it feel like the cables will break or when going down, it rumbles before it descends. They have outlets for laptops and devices. Lots of tables and chairs to sit on, but the chairs aren't always the comfiest. The couches are better for comfort. They have a large range of movies, and if you don't see a movie...you may request one. Audio selections are just as great! I like that this library has various themes depending on the holiday or event. Right now they have tons of Military Exhibits with model airplanes and tanks. Its great to see the models and see the books next to them to learn more about history. read more

It involves science. But first, I want to congratulate Jeana P. on finding special person. You did it! I am so proud of you. Jeana P. congratulations! I would like to go over some background that I have with Kapolei Library before I start. I've been to Kapolei Library about eight times. I've been there when it was hot and humid outside, and the library packed with people; I've been there when it was rainy and cold outside and the library empty...even on nice days when the library was half filled, so I've run the gamut from empty house to full house. After reading all the other yelp reviews, I think most are accurate. Great work guys! There may be something to the rude customer service. I went there eight times and only once I got rude service, so 1 in 8 times that you go; you'd probably get a disgruntle worker. I think it's just one bad apple. Other than that, I've never had problems with parking or finding a seat inside the library. One day that I went when it was storming outside the a/c got really cold. I think because when I got to the library, Kapolei was hot, and when I was using the library the weather turned stormy, so the a/c was kept on as if it were still hot outside if that makes any sense. The science. The one thing that nobody is talking about is the stink bathrooms. Now, there was a yelper named Lisa T. who did mention the stink bathrooms, and all I have to say to that is: Lisa T., you complete me. Kapolei Library defies science when it comes to bathrooms. Here's why: Usually hot air rises and cold air sinks, but at Kapolei Library hot air sinks and cold air rises. That's right. Somehow they managed to reverse science the bathrooms because the first floor bathrooms are always hot and stink, and the upstairs bathrooms are always nice and cold and smell fresh. Don't use the first floor bathrooms, just don't. In summary, the parking and seating are good, the a/c is almost too good at times, and the first floor bathrooms are always hot and stink, so use the second floor bathrooms. Yet another library that I won't go to. My daughter had a function at a nearby hotel, so I decided to do some work while waiting. There are no stations to work and plug your laptop in. Really? How are people supposed to study and do work?! I was pleasantly surprised at the "quiet zones" since most libraries nowadays let parents receive free babysitting and kids and teenagers use the place to run around and play. But DAMN! I put my head down to read (I have always studied like this since I was little) and this bitch security guard banged on the table and asked if I "was alright". My husband was working right next to me. WTF?! Do I LOOK HOMELESS?! Maybe if you had plug-in stations I could've been working on my laptop! Quiet zone?! Yeah, right. Kids screaming and yelling, right below on the first floor and nothing done. Kids yelling and walking thru the "quiet zone" and nothing done. Me reading and she slams the table. Me and husband whispering and she starts to get off her seat and head towards us. These useless, female security guards are at Manoa library as well. They turn off the a/c 30 minutes before closing. Tried getting my daughter her first library card. Filled out the application, got denied because the address on my ID did not match the address that we recently moved into. Receptionist wanted proof of residence. So I show her all documents our apartment gave us with our names, addresses, social security numbers and the length of our rental lease. She said it's not enough. Then I tell her I'll just change it to the address on my ID since it's my moms house. She gets hesitant & says she can't. So we ended up walking out embarrassed. This location wasn't helpful at all. They just look at you and try to avoid helping you. And to the woman who was "helping" us - you should be more specific in what you need from us besides documents stating the obvious. read more

Wooowww this library is NICE! If all the libraries looked like this, I would definitely stop in more often. Unfortunately even Kapolei is a ways away from Makaha when you commute by bus. I was here with my sister and niece, and my niece had an awesome time looking through the books and wanting to take them home. It's a very clean library and very modern and cozy/comfortable inside. So glad we could park free and that there was a lot of spaces. As for the customer service (or people service? I don't know if you can call library visitors customers) I think the library could do better. I stepped to the desk nearest to the children's section where there were a bunch of fliers for various events and I picked up a flier for the Super Hero event (this was the end of summer or beginning of fall I believe). I then smiled and very politely asked about the super hero event to the woman sitting behind the counter--I even used deferential tone like I always do when talking to employees practically everywhere... but this woman still looked at me with an "ugh" face, and replied in an almost condescending manner. It was one of those moments that makes you walk away thinking "well sh*t... what the hell did I do to you?! what the hec was up her a**?!?" The reason I was asking is because I am a costumer, as you can tell by the pictures in my profile. I am a part of the Costumer's Guild of Hawaii and we volunteer at various events for kids and charities, most notably Star Wars events and Super Hero events. Some of the Guild show up in costume at library events around the island. I am one of the FEW costumers on the west coast and I have been thinking that kids on our side of the island deserve to meet some of their favorite heroes just as much as anyone else does. I've been wanting to ask the local libraries if they would like costumers such as myself to show up when they have reading times or events that might coincide with our costumes. We have actually come to Kapolei library a few times in the past, but I wanted to ask about upcoming events we could show up to in the near future. Unfortunately, being vindictive and holding grudges is a character flaw of mine that I'm not willing at the moment to be rid of, and because that woman treated me so rudely, I don't particularly care anymore about their upcoming events. I also don't want to recommend anyone volunteering here... but... I have to think of the kids, which makes it so hard. Can't let crappy people ruin it for the kids. So, for now, rather than be spiteful and try to stop costumers from volunteering here, I'm just going to write about my experience in a Yelp review and give this library a two-star rating. It would have been five if it weren't for that woman but I'm sure a lot of you know just how much of an impact people can make on your experience... and she ruined the whole experience for me. With the nice interior, the welcoming design, the atmosphere amongst the other people in the library, that woman does not fit in at all. The Kapolei Library is the nicest library that I've been to Oahu. It has been open for just a little more than ten years, and it is bright, airy, and spacious. I've never seen it crowded, and since I frequent it during my lunch break or immediately after work, I've never been there where there are many kids. That may be different on weekend. The library staff is very friendly, and they have a great collection of audiobooks (which I listen to on my daily commute). While I love that I can walk the 3 blocks from my office to the library, there's also copious parking, and there's a park is right across the street. I can imagine it's a great place for families with children to spend a few hours, and then head to the park to work out "the wiggles". read more

The Kapolei Public Library is located on Manawai Street, right across from the park. There are street parking, and also a nice size lot with plenty of parking spaces. Coming here on a Saturday afternoon with the lot not even half full! I love that! There are two driveways into the parking lot, both located only on Haumea Street. This library is two stories, there is an elevator right at the entrance by the parking lot. There are restrooms on both floors - how convenient! The layout is such that the central part of the building is high-ceiling, so it's an open space from the ground floor to the ceiling. The second floor surrounds this central space. I believe, it is because of this layout, this library is not as quiet as it should be. While on the second floor, I could hear all the noise happening downstairs - the people talking at the checkout desk, the sounds of books because checked out, all the other noises that people downstairs make. If you're here to study and need to drown out the noise, be sure to bring earphones! There are plenty of tables and chairs throughout the library. On a Saturday afternoon, it took a little bit of leg work to find an empty table. One of the best things I love about this library is their DVD collection, it is pretty good size......AND the DVDs are in alphabetical order!!! I can't say this is the case at all the other libraries! If you have a specific DVD you're looking for at this location, you can find it without having to flip through the entire letter section. This library is huge! As in 2 stories huge! You don't see that very often in our libraries, but this one is really nice and spacey. There is a bunch of seating area, computers to use the internet on, and bathrooms on both levels I believe. I haven't wandered around too much since I don't get to come here often, but it seems the younger crowds books are on the lower level, and adults are on the second floor. There is a pay phone still here, as well as a pencil machine. No, not a sharpener, but a machine that actually sells pencils for $0.25! I've never seen that before. They also have a self-check out machine for just books. I haven't tried it, but seems to be popular. My only complaint would be when I came to use the bathroom, it didn't smell too good. I noticed maybe 30 minutes after I left, a cleaner came through so hopefully that was fixed. Overall, this is a nice library.
