NOT SO CAREFUL. With the excellent Hampden Cleaners going out of business, I've used this clearer twice and won't go back. First time I brought in a dozen shirts. One broken button, which they fixed. The second time I bought in six shirts including one brand new just out of the package I had to return two for a poor job in pressing. The third shirt, the new one, had a stain on the cuff which was not there when I brought it in. They claimed they couldn't have done it and were very rude about it "what do you think.. we eat in the back". Well fine. 250 work days a year. Clean shirt each day. 3 bucks a shirt. Plus suits. I'll take my $1K of annual business someplace else and recommend you consider doing the same. read more

Worst experience ever, not good does not even touch how bad this place is. My daughter took her wedding dress here to be shortened, taken in a very little bit and to add a sleeve. Every time they touched it , it got worse. After several "last fittings" dress was still not right, too tight ( because they took too much in from the very beginning and for some reason did not have the skills to fix it) and the sleeves they added was just a piece of material they slapped on and sewed on the outside of the dress, they did not have enough common sense to sew it to the inside of the dress. One was by her elbow the other half way up her arm. Oh did I mention all this is a week before the wedding, picked it up today still not right but don't trust them to touch it again. Awful way to treat a bride a week before her wedding. Word of advise to Mr Kaplan Before you talk smack on another business alterations make sure your shit is done right. read more

Quick summary: five out of seven pants were altered incorrectly and one pair of pants had new creases from being pressed incorrectly. Mr. Kaplan offered to fix the mistakes for free as if it was a generous offer, and refused to refund any money for the mistakes. Several pants that were supposed to be corrected are still not fixed correctly. The details: I started using Kaplan for their altering services approx three years ago. I'd come in, Mr. Kaplan was professional and friendly while he helped fit my pants, and I'd come back a few weeks later to pick up perfectly altered pants. I'm not sure if they've had staffing changes with the seamstresses, but I've had issues the last two times I've visited and Mr. Kaplan has not offered any refund: 1. Had some knit pants for work altered. Everything was fine for awhile. However, I realized the pants were starting to pull everywhere (and only where) they had stitched, and the pants were starting to develop small holes -- to the extent that I couldn't trust them to not rip at work. I wrote this off as simple mistake of using the wrong needle. However, now I feel like it was part of the same problem I've been dealing with currently. 2. In November 2019 I dropped of pants for work and pants for my vacation in January 2020. I assumed a month and a half before my trip would be plenty of time. However, the pants weren't done until the beginning of January. Based on previous experience, I didn't try anything on in the store, but picked them up and went home. At home I discovered FIVE OUT OF SEVEN were altered incorrectly, and one pair of pants had extra creases from being pressed incorrectly. Some pants were not hemmed correctly or at all, and some didn't have the waist taken in correctly or at all. I tried to take them back in the next day, but Mr. Kaplan was leaving due to the snow (understandably). They asked me to come in at 7am so the seamstresses could do the measurements themselves. They did rush the pants for my vacation, but I still picked them up the Friday evening before I left for vacation on a Sunday!! I then had to pick up the rest of the pants after I returned. However, some of the fixed mistakes were still not fixed when I picked them up the second time! To make matters worse, Mr. Kaplan has refused to refund me any money for the pants done incorrectly. I explained I was happy to pay for the two done correctly, but after so many interruptions to my schedule having to come in and pick up, be refitted, and pick up again, having to come in at 7am, and having all this while trying to get ready for a vacation out of the country, I had been highly inconvenienced and asked to be refunded. Mr. Kaplan's only offer was to fix the mistakes for free. To add to everything, I was shocked to see how Mr Kaplan treated his employees -- including his own wife. He was demeaning, rude, and demanding, in particular to his wife when she made an innocent mistake. No one should treat their employees or family in this way, and if there is an issue it should never be handled directly in front of a customer! A good supervisor pulls the employee aside and explains the mistake quietly to them when the customer is gone. All in all, from Mr. Kaplan, I was amazed by the poor quality of skills, lack of customer service, and treatment of family and employees. His other employees (including his wife and daughter) were great to work with. read more

Kaplan's just cleaned the seven Roman shades from our house. The shades were taken down and reinstalled by Kaplan's. They even offered us a less expensive alternative to completely disassembling the shades for cleaning as they weren't really very dirty. (No smokers in the house primarily.) Barry was great on the uninstall and reinstall, even helping me with the remounting of an additional shade that was taken down by our painter, but that hadn't been sent for cleaning. We took our Mr. and Mrs. Claus costumes in to be dry cleaner and a snap added to the Santa costume. We heard how they use to have a big business in renting out Santa costumes and other seasonal costumes. Since they had experience, we felt safe in leaving ours. There were no stains, but with Covid we wanted them cleaned. They were in garment bags when we picked them up, so just paid, took them home and hung them up. A few weeks later we open them up and we're shocked to see how pink our fur was on both costumes! When we took it back to ask about it, we were told how much better it looked from their first cleaning and they had actually cleaned it three times to get the pink out! We weren't told it could happen, only about all the suits they had cleaned and rented! No apology or refund for cleaning. We replaced my husband's suit because we couldn't stand the pink and did my suit this year. Unfortunately my new dress, while it looks similar, is not as nice as my first one. $600 later we have non- pink suits! It was certainly an expensive cleaning - sigh. read more

I took a handful of clothes to this place under the impression they were one of the better dry cleaners in the area. They did fine with most of my clothes, but completely ruined one of my shirts. It's a white long sleeve shirt that had a stain in the back, I took it to them to get the stain out, and when I got it back I looked at it and the stain was not gone, and the entire shirt is a mixture of the original color and a gross off white yellow tinted color. $60 shirt completely ruined. I had several items tailored at Kaplans. The first a long dress. I was very disappointed when the hem came out before I even left my home for the wedding. Cost me 70 dollars for a hem that came out prior to even getting out the door ! Plus the other alterations my total was 130. The second dress came out just as bad. The sewing came out during the wedding and I had string exposed during a black tie event. Another 100 dollar bill. Two tries, too much money. I'm done. I was terribly disappointed by my experience. The owner forgot to write down a crucial detail about the alterations and then refused to make the proper corrections, since it would require taking the dress apart again. Instead, he told me he'd "fix" his error - at no charge, how nice - if I went out and bought a belt for him to use to cover the mishap. To add insult to injury, at no point was a discount offered, and I was never called when my dress was ready like I was told I would be. I'm surprised the other reviewer had a bad experience. I suppose everyone has their dry cleaning horror story. Honestly, I've never actually had my dry cleaning done here, but it is my go-to place for alterations. I wouldn't even think of taking denim anywhere else in the area. I learned about Kaplan's from Sassy (the denim boutique in the West Shore Farmer's Market). Kaplan's does what is called a Super Hem which involves removing the original hem from the denim, shortening the leg and then reattaching the original hem in a way that looks as though the denim has never been altered. It will run you about $20, but it will make your perfect pair of jeans even more perfect. read more

The owner appeared pleasant. I had my new heels put on my boots a little over a year ago. The job was quite frankly very mediocre and the bottoms were not even. The boots were old and not very noticeable so I didn't complain. Being not from this area, this place is close to my home which is why I went back. This time I had a LV (authentic) bag that I had stupidly tried to remove the hot-stamped initials with alcohol. It left one leaf of the handles not looking so great. I took it to this place to see if they could sort of undo some of the damage that i did. The first red flag was that the owner suggested that a rivet would be less obtrusive than some brown polish. WRONG. I was mortified by his suggestion! Not only would that be horrifically obtrusive but it would significantly compromise the integrity and value of my very expensive purse. I somehow let him convince me that he would do a decent job. I should have known better. The next day I called to see if he had started on the bag because I thought about it and didn't want him to do the work. He was EXTREMELY defensive on the phone. He started the work so my bag was at his mercy. I picked it up and it looked just barely better that it had when I had left it. Thankfully, it was only $21 bucks. Moral to the story. Do NOT leave your expensive bags with places you are not sure about. There is a place in Bethesda, MD that I know would have done a good job. Better, a LOT better than this guy and I should have taken it there. Thankfully, this guy did not make the problem any worse! Judging from the other reviews, it's probably best to go elsewhere if you have expensive or precious items that need cleaning or repair. Highly recommend Dale Kaplan for all ur dry cleaning and alteration needs. I've been going there for many years and the service is always reliable and timely. Dale has gone above and beyond to ensure my clothes are just what I had in mind. Since I am retired, I don't need to use the dry cleaning services as much, however, I go in frequently for alterations. With so many women's tops being made so low-cut today , I often take brand new tops in to have the neckline be more modest. Dale has you try the tops on in their dressing rooms so he/the seamstress can make the alterations as exact as possible; it's all about perfection and ensuring they get things right. They've also sewn liners into tops that are see-thru so I don't have to wear a cami. . What a relief to be comfortable in my clothes no matter if it's going to church, a night out, or a picnic. I recently visited Kaplan's to have the suit for my wedding tailored. I had already purchased three different colors of the "same" suit from a popular clothing store and was going to have all three tailored (2 for daily use and 1 for the wedding). What I didnt realize was that despite getting three of the exact same suit in the same size, all three suits fit differently. Dale Kaplan showed me the differences which were quite noticeable when tried on one after the other. I had no clue that the same suit could vary so much. I've used Kaplan's for their alteration service three times to get dress pants hemmed, and they've done an excellent job. The only downside is that it can take at least a week for them to do it, when other places can do it in less time. They also INSIST that you try on the pants in the store so they can measure the seam while you're wearing them, which is great if you're not familiar with inseam lengths, but I am, so I get annoyed when I have to tell them no 3+ times in a row. A few weeks ago we took our "Williamsburg" comforter and curtains to Kaplans. We said we wanted them cleaned, as in please remove dirt. When we got the comforter back it had gone from green leaves on a tan background to bluish leaves on a somewhat tan background. We called and voiced our concern and were told that Mr. Kaplan would call us. A long conversation cut short... "You said you wanted then cleaned... the curtains were marked DRY CLEAN ONLY and the comforter wasn't, so we dry cleaned it." He took no responsibility for the mistake. It seems that the industry policy (he was quick to quote some FTC mumbo-jumbo) is that the cleaner does as told. I would have thought the cleaner (he's been in business for 50 years) would have relied on his expert knowledge to overrule the customer's "request" or at least give them a call before ruining the item. I convinced him to at least refund the $39 charge. He said he would send me a check. Nearly a week went by and I called. Mr. Kaplan's response: "Well, you paid by credit card, so I need to refund by credit card" (OK, so why not call me?). I offered to give him my credit card number and he said I must come in as processing it over the phone ".. will cost me money" Wow. Can customer service slip below "0"? In this case YES. read more

My grandmother passed away which caused for my dad to need a suit ASAP. I had gotten one for him as he was planning the funeral and took an old pair of pants with to get the new ones hemmed. After explaining the situation to a different tailor I was cut off and told it would take 7 days...I needed it for my dads mothers funeral, I cannot help the timing or the rush needed...with a lot of attitude from other tailors I stumbled upon this one. The nicest man I have ever met was inside tailoring. I barely got my information out about needing it rushed for my grandmothers funeral and he told me he would do it, he said he would never turn away a situation such as this. I felt so blessed for the help. I will never go to a different tailor, along with my entire family.
