A truly old school area and a very populated place of many different tourist. I cme to this Charles Bridge and had not known of it before I came here. As you walk on this bridge I came here during the afternoon and it was super packed with many people. While you walk on this bridge they do have many statues but I don't really know who they are or any of the history but you can for sure tell it's been here for a really long time. I didn't buy anything on the bridge but many people were selling paintings and some were selling portraits that they can draw of you. As you walk here you just feel super happy since it is something that you can't find in America. There are plenty of places to visit in Europe and are I believe more famous countries, but Prauge is something nice and different. One thing that I am truly sad that I didn't do was save more pictures and take more pictures. I ended up taking a few but while uploading it to my computer my laptop decided to literally get fried. :( Soo no saved pictures anymore. So a great tip while you go on vacation is upload pictures on an external drive as well! That is one thing I truly truly wish I did. read more

Beautiful solid structure. Romantic and charming, albeit very crowded when we visited in August 2010. Beautiful walk during sunset time all the way to the castle and cathedral. Absolutely worth it. Truly the lifeblood of Prague! I loved walking this bridge with its amazing statues and all sort of artists hawking their wares. I was told by our guide that the majority of the statues are replicas but you can spot the originals by how black they are. This bridge was also repaired but not with much sympathy or care and hence the patchwork repair job you can see with the different colored stones (albeit this is more readily apparent on the boat ride on the river). One cool thing- halfway thru is a massive statue and it has an image of a dog, which the Locals rub to demonstrate loyalty to their country and then on the right us the image of a lady - and only women are supposed to rub this as its supposed to make you pregnant! read more

Quite lovely and exquisite. I first saw this bridge in an INXS video in the 80s (go watch "Never Tear Us Apart"- great shots of Prague throughout). The statues are detailed and ornate. A visit here would not be complete without several walks across this bridge, both during the day and at night. read more

Absolutely beautiful bridge when there are not a million people on it. A bit exaggerated but seriously when you go during peak times, it's so hard to walk across it, let alone get a good picture. My husband and I were able to sneak a few good pictures in and it was a shorter walk than we expected. Lots of little street vendors and a beautiful spot to visit when in Prague. read more

Definitely my favorite part of visiting Prague! Your visit isn't completely until you come here. It's a great pedestrian only bridge and you can get some of the most gorgeous views of the Castle. My recommendation would be to try to come here twice - once at night and once during the day. All of Prague changes from this gorgeous historical relic to a enchanting dreamy glow. Since it's right in the middle of the city, I would suggest splitting the schedule into two halves. The first day, Old Town Square, Jewish Quarters, (i.e. eastern Prague) and then Prague Castle, Petrin Hill the other day. You'll probably pass the bridge both times, so I'd try to hit it the once in the morning and again at night. Also,while you're down here, be sure to take a boat cruise. It's a perfect way to relaxing from all the walking and a great way to soak up the sights. read more

Charles Bridge spans across the Charles River, named after King Charles. Along the two sides of the bridge are towers that visitors can climb to get a great view of the river and its surrounding beautiful buildings. Along the bridge, there are many noteworthy statues, one of which is of St. John. St. John is also known as the saint of 5 stars. The story goes that he was thrown into the Charles River by the king, and when people found him, they also found that he had 5 stars on his head. Another story also alleged that he had an affair with the queen to be thrown in the river (which is the fake story). Nonetheless, people come to touch the statue and make a wish, which would come true apparently. At the Old Town square side of the bridge, there is also the entrance to the boat ride on the Charles River (highly recommended). Enjoy your time! read more

Beautiful bridge but wayyyy too many people and touristy. So, when I went to the Charles Bridge back in 2016, it was nowhere near as packed and touristy as it is now. Now it's almost impossible to enjoy the scenery and the beauty as it's packed shoulder to shoulder with asian tourists on selfie sticks or people bumping into you. Possibly Prague's best known tourist sight, the Charles Bridge is both an essential part of any tour (it forms the main pedestrian route from the main part of the city centre to the old town and castle) as well as an impressive historical site (and sight) in its own right. History The need for a new bridge came about when the earlier 12th century Judith Bridge collapsed in a flood in 1342. Begun in 1357, it wasn't completed until 1402. The architect was Petr Parler, who also took over the building of the Cathedral and was responsible for the Chancel and Wenceslas Chapel: indeed, one reason progress on the cathedral was slowed is that he was diverted onto other project, the Charles bridge being the most notable. The Charles Bridge has itself been damaged over the years by floods, most notably in 1890, when several arches collapsed, along with some of the statues which fell into the river. It has also seen fighting in a number of wars, including the 30 Years' War, when in 1648 it became the front line against Swedish forces lodged on the West Bank. The bridge The bridge is over half a kilometre long, and consists of 16 spans of pointed Gothic arches. There are 30 statues along its length, mostly dating from the 1700s (the most recent erected in 1928). One of the more interesting is that of St John of Nepomuk, who was martyred by being thrown off the bridge into the River Vltava in the reign of Wenceslas IV. The bridge is guarded at either end by two impressive Gothic towers, both of which can be visited and offer excellent views from the top. The bridge is cobbled and pedestrianised throughout, and is busy at all times of the year, but particularly packed in summer, when it can take half an hour to cross. Great pedestrian only bridge that is packed with mostly tourists but if definitely is a the must see place in Prague. Of the several times that we've walked here, there have always been very good street musicians. We've seen two different Dixieland jazz bands as well as a violinist an opera singer and others. There are also artists to sketch you or to sell you landscape pictures that they've drawn of Prague and others selling jewelry and other items. There are also many statues to look at as well as the amazing views of the river, castle and the other buildings. At either end of the bridge there are also many restaurants, bars and shops. I think every tourist to Prague has several pictures of themselves on this bridge. read more

Not hard to guess this one is the Charles bridge! It is one of the must-see in Prague and it is also where your walk around the castle area would finish/start. In my case I started there but doing the other way is actually a better idea: too much walk up hill and when I finally got there I was tired. Anyway, the bridge is amazing. Great view of the river, musicians, artists, handcrafted jewelry ( they have loads of it, if you like it you'll go crazy). It is a short walk so take your time to appreciate the bridge before the start of the real walk in the castle. Also plenty of cafes and restaurants around. This Charles Bridge is a lovely sight. I went with my Lonely Planet Guide's recommendation to see it at sunrise (6am!) and it has a sublimely beautiful quality in the morning light. Very sparse in the early morning, which is nice; mainly a lot of photography enthusiasts trying to get a nice shot without so many people around in the nice golden light. read more

Must see, it is a fantastic bridge which is probably one of my favorites in the world! The Bridge, sometimes called King Charles Bridge, started its construction in the 15th Century under King Charles IV as the main connection between the old town and the castle. It is unique from all the other bridges since it contains approximately 30 baroque statues with one of the most famous, St. John of Nepomuk, a national saint of the Czech Republic. When we were visiting, you might see some of the statues being removed for restoration. You will easily see which statues have been completed and which ones have not by the color of the construction material. Check each one of them out! I visited the bridge at different times of the day and night. You will get some great pictures of the bridge and of the surrounding area. read more

There are tons of vendors set up along the bridge selling some really cool stuff, but definitely makes it difficult to take photos, if that's the kinda thing you're into. Charles Bridge joins the Old Town to the Mala Strana that leads up to the Prague Castle. It straddles the Vlatva river that runs through Prague and affords beautiful views of the whole city. From the west you enter the bridge from the Old Town Bridge Tower, an incredible gothic structure built to herald the entrance to the Old Town/. The bridge is always packed with hawkers and tourists and can become quite unpleasant when trying to get anywhere in a hurry during the summer. The Karlsbrücke - or Charles Bridge, in English - is a major site in Prague, and can't really be avoided. Neither should it be, despite the wall-to-wall crowds, souvenirs and buskers you'll usually find upon it. It's been there since 1402, and oozes history in an undeniably historical city. Early sunrise, at night illuminated by the lights, during the day...Over the years, I crossed this pretty bridge adorned by thirty sculptures so many times on my way to the castle... Admiring the stunning views, rubbing the bronze sculptures to bring good luck, shopping hand-made crystal jewels, watching artists, taking a tour boat, etc. You can do all that and much more near this bridge completed in 1402. The Charles Bridge is unlike any other throughout our Central Europe trip, as it is lined with statues on each side and is open mostly to pedestrian traffic only, except for some official cars. It has a long history as it was built by King Charles or at least ordered by him, and interesting as the blocks had milk and wine infused in its construction. It is also noteworthy to take into account that traditions that aren't exactly Christian are also present as many people believe it brings much luck to touch the five stars with the left hand while touching the body of the priest (can't remember his name) with the right hand. One of the things that drew me to Prague was its rich, dark history. Coming from the US where any house that's 100 years old is considered antique, visiting a city with buildings and bridges built in the 12th century is quite a trip. Crossing the Vlatava River, I highly recommend that anyone visiting take time to cross the bridge by walking. It's a great way to view the city, there's great people watching, you'll find locals selling crafts, paintings, and offering goods/services (almost like a farmer's market) and though you might get heckled, it's also a great spot to learn more about local history and see some sculptures that are hundreds and hundreds of years old. It's pedestrian only so you can stroll slowly, walk around and not worry about getting hit or honked at. This also allows for you to stop and look at each lovely baroque statue as they span the entire length of the bridge on both sides. I used a guide book to help decipher who the statues were and what role they played in local history. It was fun to learn about The statue of John of Nepomuk and look for it. As I understand it, on 20 March 1393 he was thrown into the river Vltava from this same bridge because Wenceslaus, King of the Romans and King of Bohemia demanded it. Near his statue there's also a plaque in the ground that marks the exact spot that he was thrown over. Super dark and interesting stuff if you're into history! The bridge also makes for a great place to take photos, watch people on boats float past, or to stop and look back at the city or up at Petrin Hill and Prague Castle. read more

Ahhh the Charles Bridge. It's only fitting that I save my 400th review for one of my favorite places in Prague. I would highly recommend visiting the bridge during an off-peak time. It's fine to go during the day and I'm sure you will because that's how you get a lovely view of the Vltava, but definitely make an effort to catch sunrise on the bridge. When no one else is there and it's just you and a few other people who've braved the early morning to see the sun rise--it's a magical feeling. From the tourist standpoint, it's a pedestrian bridge that connects Old Town and the Lesser Town. The bridge is literally filled to the brim with history, and it's said that if you touch a star toward the middle of the bridge (I think it's where John Nepomuk was tossed over the bridge) it'll bring you good luck? Lots of statues and columns and all that typical quintessential old-European stuff that really makes the Charles Bridge a stunning piece of architecture. You should also consider a boat tour to view the bridge from the water because that in itself is a whole another experience. tldr; one of my favorite places in Prague, but go early in the morning for sunrise, I promise it'll be worth it. read more

What can one say about the most visited landmark in Prague that hasn't already been said? Nothing. It's a beautiful spot & should always belong on a "Must See In Prague" list. I kept returning to this bridge during my Indian summer week in Praha. At night, I crossed the Bohemian sandstones by moonlight, By day, I cruised under it on the Vltava River to admire its 2,000 foot expanse. The religious come to touch the brass reliefs on Baroque replicas, and to pray. Street people are here to beg for alms, for themselves and for their well fed dogs. Tourists arrive from every nation, to walk the wide pedestrian allee and to peruse the vendors' racks of jewelry and prints. Musicians strum guitars or perform classical pieces. The Gothic tower on the Old Town side is flanked by a proud statue of the bridge's namesake, Charles IV. In the water, a hydroisolation field was created four years ago to protect the bridge from floods that have assaulted Praha and its most famous bridge for almost 700 years. read more

Amazing, deep, sad, wonderful, rich history...preserved beautifully (one of the few larger cities never bombed during WWII) From this bridge you can see great landmarks, learn about the old wooden ice breakers (used so sheets of ice dont crash into the bridge) and the locks (so the boats can increase/decrease elevation just like in Seattle), watch the dinner cruises go by, and see the statues with fascinating messages. Most weekends also include great street vendors and musicians, but I preferred walking this one in the very early morning when it was less crowded. read more

This is a must see while in Prague. It's the iconic bridge one will likely think of first when thinking of Prague. It's a pedestrian bridge, so it's very easy to walk on, as well as stopping to take pictures. Everyone else is doing the same thing, anyway. It connects Old Town to Lesser Town, both of which are absolutely worth seeing. Lesser Town features lots of gorgeous buildings that look exactly how you would expect a European city to look. Old Town is also worth checking out, as it also features gorgeous architecture and multiple museums. read more

Lovely historic bridge, always a crowd day and night but for us that only adds to the ambiance and charm. Numerous statues along the way and beautiful views of the river, Prague Castle and the Old Town Bridge Tower. As you go west on the bridge the view of the castle sitting on top of the hill is pretty magical. The bridge is bustling with people, artists sketching, musical groups and singers and souvenir stands all looking for your business. Get toward the Castle side and the stairs leading down bring you to a quiet picturesque area called Kampa. Lots of nice cafes, restaurants, park areas to stroll through. The Lennon Wall and the love Lock Bridge are also nearby. There is also a practical side to the Charles Bridge. If you are looking to go from the Old Town Side to the Castle Side, the Charles Bridge is the center of both areas. read more

During the day there are many stalls with handmade goods and souvenirs. Regardless, the view is very nice and this is a must visit place while in Praha. read more
