I'm here to tell you that I have drunk the CrossFit Kool-Aid and I'm here to stay. CrossFit Torrent is a spacious gym with a welcoming attitude. I joined a 28 day challenge for the month of January of 2020. The gym set aside special class times for beginners during the first week of the challenge. In these classes, they focused on technique and gave us some modified workouts to get us comfortable with what we could expect from a normal class. The challenge included three classes a week, home workouts and a meal plan. The results are real. I lost 9 pounds and my body fat decreased by 4.7% I like that the classes are always an hour long. I never feel like I'm competing with anyone but myself. I do my best to complete the workouts with the weight that works for me. It's nice to look at the more experienced CrossFitters to see what I could aspire to do someday. The main drawback may be that memberships are expensive and the most cost efficient option is to commit to a one year contract.

I get a full body workout in 45 minutes in a group setting with the help of a trainer and tv monitors! It's clean, organized, judgement free and fun! So, I search Facebook events regularly for new *free* activities. One day, 2 summers ago, I came across an event for the F45 Grand Rapids grand opening. I'd never heard of this F45 thing before so I did some googling and found out that it's a workout concept originating from Australia and this would be the first franchise opening within a 3 hours' drive from us. My sisters and I decided to check it out and that Saturday morning, we got to the strip on 28th street where Michaels craft store used to be. The building was just being set up with mats, tv monitors and equipment - basic floor, walls and ceiling. We ran through several stations outdoors using free weights, ropes and yoga mats. Throughout the whole workout, trainers were encouraging us with, 'Nice work!', high fives and occasionally helping us modify lifts to target the correct muscle group. It was so much fun and by the end, I made up my mind to sign up for the 2 weeks of free, unlimited classes! Since that summer, I've been going to classes randomly with my friend Nicole who goes daily. They have a 20 class pass for $300. It's steep compared to gyms that offer memberships, but I have more of an incentive to actually attend these group workouts than I do if I were to hit the gym alone. Now that the place is established, they offer multiple classes from 530a-7p, 2 clean bathrooms, cubbies to stash your coats/keys, security cameras, and a welcoming environment. I've found that the Saturday morning classes fit my schedule the best and they offer 3 classes before 11am! It's such a great way to start my weekend and gives me time to recover before the work week begins again. I'm always sore after but it's a great feeling of accomplishment after I complete 2 rounds of 27 stations of heart pounding and sweat dripping workouts! They always focus on doing the right movement and modifying the WOD (Work out of the day) as per your body/physical abilities. I started with the on boarding program and it really helped me understand the different movements and it also taught me about how I can scale an exercise to work my way up the ladder of fitness. Not to mention, all the folks in class are always kind and generous; making me want to show up every day and give it my best.

I was told that I could cancel at any time for $75 fee. And, I only wanted to sign up for 3 months to see how I liked the facility. After my free work out with a trainer, I knew this gym wasn't for me. The trainer shamed me because I couldn't afford the extra money per month for personal training. He said to me, "well, I guess if you don't want to spend $50 for your health, that's your choice." It was very demeaning. As for the $75 dollar cancellation fee, not true unless you MOVE more than 25 miles from the nearest Family Fitness. I own a home in Otsego, I have no intentions of moving, so I never inquired about this fee. I only inquired about a straight cancellation fee. This place is only interested in your money, their business practices are awful! Don't go here!

Good luck trying to get any of the "free" perks promised when signing up. Your personal trainer…read morewon't be available, your special monthly membership fee will be jacked up, and the employee will tell you anything to get you to sign up. The one time the personal trainer was "available" he handed me two kettle weights and told me to swing them back and forth. Then he left "for a minute" and never returned. I wish I had never been roped in. On top of the fact that I have wasn't sure about joining because of a health issue and the employee mistakenly told me I could have a 30 day trial period. That was wrong, there was no trial period allowed. I found that out when I tried to cancel my membership (the first time). I am still trying to cancel. Not only because of my disability but also because of the shady way the corporation treats people!
