This doctor is phenomenal. I will not write about my medical history but she is the best! Patient and brilliant, with amazing bedside manner. A brilliant surgeon that taught laparoscopic technique to quite a few doctors when the procedure was young. I love her dedication to the craft of surgical gynecology. March 06,2020 One of my Lenten practices is to be grateful to God, who has given me a great blessing of longer life...these past 11 years...through the amazing medical help and procedures done to me by Dr. Kathleen O Hanlan in January 10-13,2009. As I look back 11 years ago... It all began in January, 2008, when I had a ten year post menopausal bleeding. All kinds of ultra sound, paps mear tests did gave a "no - concern 'results, up until my Gynologist, Dr. Susan Logan did a DNC on December 28,2028. The DNC result was like a bomb sheel bursting on my head...I had Stage 4 Metastatic Uterine Cancer. I needed immediate hysterectomy by an occologist,who must also be a gynecologist ...but it was a holiday week end. There was no available doctors to treat me ASAP!!! I searched on line and found the website of Dr.Kathleen O'Hanlan. I immediately called her office,hoping against hope that somebody will respond to my phone call ! Lo and behold, her medical secretary attended to my needs. I lived in Santa Rosa, CA... around 80 miles south. I managed to prepare all my medical records and surgical requirements in a day's time on a Monday , January 03,2009...via fax machine , with the kind help of Dr. O'Hanlan 's able secretary. By Monday, January 10,2009, my caring neighbors: Francis and Sharon drove me from 3:00 am to 5:30 am to Sequioa Hospital, where at exactly, 7:00 a.m. Dr. O Hanlan examined me thoroughly...recommending a total laparoscopic hysterectomy for my stage 4 Metastatic Uterine cancer. She advised me to stay in a nearby hotel with my Friend Sharon, to prepare for 8:00 am surgery on January 12,2009, which she did splendidly and successfully for two hours ! By around 5:30 am of January 13,2022, she paid me an early visit at the Sequoia Hospital and happily informed me that I can already be discharged before noon that day. I immediately called my spouse and he came by at 10:00 a.m. driven by Francis, Sharon's spouse, as my husband is legally BLIND . I was discharged at exactly 11:00 am. on January 14,2009, I consulted with my primary doctor, Dr. Scott Peterson at the Santa Rosa Hospital. He recommended me to Dr. Wes Lee, an oncologist at the Round Barn Cancer Center of Santa Rosa. Dr.Lee prescribed a massive chemotherapy plan to combat my metastatic cancer. At first, I declined knowing the irreversible effects of chemo treatments. I was prepared to die after a year or so ! Surprisingly, Dr. Kathleen O Hanlan called me at home. She followed my case and encouraged me to agree with Dr.Lee's cancer treatment plan, based on the biopsy report,she did...that is, my cancer cells are named Papillarly Cells and they can totally be killed by a chemo medicine called Taxol. Thus, I changed my initial decision. I underwent the six week chemotherapy. from February 14,2009 to June 06,2009. That was a glorious day....I rang the BELL of being Cancer free !!! Thanks be to God , to my loving Spouse, Don, Dr.Kathleen O 'Hanlan and Dr. Wes Lee. My spouse died on July 13,2010..with my health back to normal, I was able to take care of him , as he did during my cancer days the previous year !!! As others have stated RUN, RUN, RUN -- I went to Dr. O'Hanlan regarding a benign fluid filled cyst on my left ovary. She recommended a hysterectomy and removal of both ovaries. Dr. O'Hanlan was very convincing that at my age I had no use for my ovaries or my uterus. She ended up removing both of my ovaries. There was no discussion about the repercussions of such a surgery which I now know was completely unnecessary. The cyst could have easily been drained I have been told as both ovaries were healthy. Not only are there hormonal issues as a result, but the surgery was a complete tragedy and disaster. She was very encouraging and nearly enthusiastic about laparoscopic surgery and how quick and painless it would be -- all to the contrary. After surgery I lie in pain and during recover nearly went into a convulsion. Then I learned that I could go home or stay one night in the hospital. I felt so weak and sick I asked to stay one night. I never did see O'Hanlan after the surgery that day. Instead that night I lay bleeding in my hospital room but had a very nice nurse who was very concerned about me. She kept changing my pads and commented that this should never have happened that there isn't supposed to be bleeding. I was in such shock and pain I discounted what she said that night to some degree. The next morning O'Hanlan was making rounds. She came into my hospital room acting very cold and when she looked at my incisions she said, "what have you done to my incision?" She added, "Everything looked perfect after surgery". My stomach looked like a piece of raw meat. I was still in shock and to be truthful I was extremely intimidated by her aloof, cold, and distant manner. In the days that followed I was in terrible distress with electrical shocks running through my body. I felt like every nerve was on fire in my arms, legs, feet -- nearly everywhere and I continued to bleed while at home. When I called her office (she never called to follow-up) I asked her when the bleeding would stop and she said that it would stop when it stops and briskly got off the phone. She had NO empathy!! Nor did she ever followed-up with me. I have been suffering since the surgery for many years now! I have struggled with hair loss, hormone imbalance, peripheral neuropathy, and PTSD. My health issues only continue to worsen as a result of what appears to have been a cut nerve during surgery. My life has never been the same and after educating myself about the removal of my ovaries along with the neuropathy from the surgery, my life could be shortened. i have spent many of the following years in denial. I couldn't bare what happened to me during my surgery, or how inhumanly I was treated. I wanted to believe that I could nurse myself back to health through healthy living -- I have worked very hard on my health but the damage was done and is not really reversible. I would NEVER recommend this doctor. She butchered my perfectly healthy body and ruined the quality of my life. read more

It has been the worst experience with a Doctor in my life. I should have known by the way the her secretary treated us... Had a tumor removed on the Right ovary and she did a complete hysterectomy...WHAT I didn't need a hysterectomy...was released from the hospital 1 day after surgery she Dr O had to go to Hawaii with her friends... I Had major complications her response to me and my husband after 9 days of misery and pain was "good luck with that, you'll have to find a surgeon to help you" REALLY! A year and a half later I have seen 5 different surgeons and owe thousands of dollars in Medical bills and no Doctor can figure out what happened... Dr. O'Hanlan has operated on me at least four times and she literally saved my life two of those times. The first time she save my life was for a recurrence of endometrial cancer. She used a procedure that was new at the time to remove all of the tumor, a piece of my colon, a piece of my bladder and a few other items to be sure she got clean margins, scooping everything out at once without leaving any cancer cells behind. As a result, I was able to forgo having chemotherapy - quite miraculous in my opinion! Later, when I discovered I had so much damage from the previous radiation treatments, I realized that if I had received chemo as well, my intestines probably would have been irreparable. Ten years later, I was in a great deal of pain, unable to eat and slowly starving to death. At the time, Dr. O'Hanlan was not performing surgeries on patients who did not have cancer, so I tried to find a general surgeon. After two general surgeons refused to operate because it was too risky, I saw one of her surgical partners who agreed to do the surgery and told me Dr. O'Hanlan would most likely partner with him. She is not only a courageous and talented surgeon, but a caring person. When Dr. O'Hanlan heard about my upcoming surgery, she called me from Chicago where she was speaking and told me she would be there and not to worry. I felt like she really cared about me. My wife had a laparoscopic hysterectomy & appendectomy and it went extremely well. Kate gave her her personal cell # for questions, walked her through an easy and successful home removal of a catheter (!) over a weekend, and checked in by phone to make sure she was feeling OK. A couple months ago she went back for a 2nd opinion on a surgery, and Kate recognized her, gave her a big hug, and assured her that my wife's surgeon (who we didn't know, but Kate did) was top notch. Don't let the small office fool you - this is a brilliant, top surgeon. Not sure what happened with the couple negative reviews here, but that doesn't sound like the treatment we received. In all my life, I have never been more impressed with a doctor. When I was referred to Dr. O'Hanlan because my OB/GYN had discovered a large mass, my countless questions were almost completely addressed by sizeable packet she sent to me, explaining the causes and risks my condition, what was happening to my body as a result, and what I could expect from the process of addressing it, from detailed pre-op and post-op procedures, normal symptoms during the various stages of recovery, and potential complications and how we could work together to address them. When I spoke with Dr. O'Hanlan on the phone and in person prior to the surgery, she was both empathetic and candid. She treated me as a whole person, rather than a diagnosis, and because of all the information she had given me before the surgery, no matter what I encountered I knew whether it was normative, unusual but not harmful, or something to cause alarm. (Consequently, nothing caused alarm.) When I came home, she checked on me again to ensure all was well, that I was getting proper rest and exercise, and up-to-speed on future expectations. Once again, she answered all my questions and made me feel completely at ease. Dr. O'Hanlan has distinguished herself as an expert in her field, not only as a practitioner, but as a researching scholar who is dedicated to empower others in the field to glean from her expertise. She has committed herself to focusing on minimizing the recovery time for patients following their surgeries, and her patients reap the benefits from what she has learned. I have been comparing notes with many friends who have also needed hysterectomies (from other doctors here in CA and in other states), and by far my experience seems to be the most positive. One final word to consider: Nobody goes to someone like Dr. O'Hanlan because their insides look like the pictures. We end up there because we have something wrong. These conditions tend to affect the configuration of our organs: tumors can grow, pushing organs into funky configurations or anchoring onto the organs themselves. So additional risks will always exist with the types of surgeries that Dr. O'Hanlan performs. She is clear about this; complications may require additional surgery. As she says herself, "Complications only happen in 4% of my cases, but if you are in the 4%, I understand that is 100% of you!" Bottom line, even in the worst case scenario, Dr. O'Hanlan will still be the best person you can go to, and will still be your best bet in the fastest possible recovery. From the minute I walked into Dr Kate Ohanlans office I knew I was in the right place. I had been dealing with painful fibroids and ovarian cyst for over a few years. Being a Registered Nurse I was very selective to who I went to and did my research. Dr. Kate Ohanlan came highly recommended, so I traveled over 3 1/2 hrs to have my surgery. My surgery was uncomplicated post operatively and I was amazed on how I had suffered no surgical pain. I haven't gone here yet, but my phone experience with the receptionist (I will not mention who) was so terrible that I will not be going to see Dr. O'hanlan. The receptionist was so insensitive and so rude that I was so taken back. I have never been insulted in my life for how she talked to me. She was not helpful, she was rude for no reason. She was rushing me off the phone, not helping me with what I need. It was almost, "hey, you do not have the proper insurance, I cannot help you." I told her that I was referred to the doctor, and I have all the paperwork, but she was so rude and insensitive. read more

My sister was referred to this surgeon following being diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. The surgery seemed to have gone well, as far as all visible tumors being removed. It was an invasive surgery as you may know if you're familiar with Stage 3 Ovarian cancer. After 10 miserable days of recovery, my sister was sent home. Why was it miserable? Well, have the time she was there, she did not check on my sister. She was in a lot of pain the entire time. We'd ask the nurse to page the doctor and we wouldn't see a doctor for a couple days. We'd get messages that she was "fine". After 10 days my sister was released. Did I mentioned we lived 3 hours away. The day after we got home, my sister was more swollen than when we got out of surgery. We called O'Hanlan's office; we were reassured by an office person, not O'Hanlan, that, that was normal. Fast forward to the next day, my sister ended up in Emergency surgery (at local hospital), due to an abcess. We almost lost her because she lost so much blood. I attempted to reach O'Hanlan to keep her updated on what was happening. While my sister was in emergency surgery, I received a phone call from O'Hanlan telling me to: "Never call her again, because she was paged while she was in surgery. I should not have called the number I called. I should call some other number." Wow, that's good to know. My sister's surgeon that probably performed a botched surgery, also is full of herself. Dr. Kate gave me back the life I didn't know I was missing. After years of dealing with painful fibroids and cysts and multiple ER trips I was referred to Dr Kate. Dr. O'hanlan (Kate she suggested) met us for the first time 3 days before my wife's debulking surgery for stage 3c ovarian cancer. Immediately we found her to be caring (she really listens), straight forward (she takes the time to explain what will happen during, and after surgery, and provides a handout that shows her surgery complications rates, which are extremely low- very comforting), and she has one of the most positive, upbeat personalities you will ever meet. After the 3 hour surgery she met my wife's sister and me in the waiting room and told us "the surgery couldn't have gone better" and then explained everything she found and did, and that she had meticulously removed 100% of all visual, residual signs of the disease. I gave her the best hug I had. She is absolutely an amazing doctor and a wonderful human. One other attribute I will subscribe to Kate, she is aggressive in her approach against the cancer. This resulted in an 8 day recovery stay in the hospital for my wife (which Kate foretold in her handout), but it also resulted in the 100% visual removal of the disease. I know this will give my wife her best chance of fighting this disease as she starts her chemo treatments. This is why women with ovarian cancer really need to go to a board certified, OBGYN Oncologist like Kate, and not just an OBGYN or general surgeon. Kate told us during our recovery stay that she had done over 5,000 open abdominal surgeries. GET SOMEONE THAT KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND SOMEONE THAT DOES IT FREQUENTLY! Also, Sequoia Hospital where she operates is very clean and comfortable (a much smaller hospital than some of the large teaching hospitals). A diagnosis with large ovarian mass of 20 cmx16cmx12cm that was subsequently confirmed by ultrasound would have made everyone concerned about am I going to survive this, or would it take a long time to recover from the surgery, and many other scenarios. More importantly, who can guide me through and help me recover from this? I was very concerned... Very fortunate for me, a dear friend of mine introduced me to Dr. O'Hanlan. I am healthy today and was able to return to my regular exercise within one week from the surgery because of her. Relative to C-section and a more difficult child birth with my two children, this was by far the fastest recovery I have experienced in my life. I can not thank her enough! I also find her website and attached documentaton extremely helpful. Her office staff were professional, experienced and considerate. I studied the document from her website before meeting her, 2) asked questions so that I was clear what was going to happen to my body during and after the procesure, and 3) followed the provided instructions after the surgery. Run, don't walk, away away away. This doctor did a hysterectomy by laprascope and almost cut my bladder in half. She tried to repair it with many, many staples which kept appearing for weeks afterward. I had to have another abdominal surgery in an attempt to repair the damage and it was unsuccessful. I then had to stay in bed for two months before the Chief of Urology at UCSF fixed my problem. Three months later he had to remove a bladder stone which had formed around stapes she used to try to repair all her damaage. Ask if she can practice at Mills/ Peninsula and the answer is NO. There's a reason. Stay away. read more

If you are reading these reviews (as I did six months ago) you are probably facing some medical unknown that is causing you anxiety and stress. I was faced with an abnormal PAP result, but not the simple kind - rather the glandular kind. I debated whether or not to go back to my regular OBGYN or contact an oncologist directly. I ended up calling several oncologists, and Dr. O'Hanlan's office phoned me right back and had me in the office for tests in a couple of days. I never looked back. Dr. O'Hanlan is amazing!!!!! Hands down the best doctor I have ever seen. She took excellent care of me. Did a laparoscopic hysterectomy, and I was good to go in about a week. So, please don't think twice. I have had SIX surgeries and by far this surgery was the most easy on my body, yet it definitely reaped the most rewards. I feel like a brand new person. And I have Dr. O' Harlan to thank for giving me my life back. Before getting a hysterectomy, I joined a support group on Facebook, just to hear other experiences. Because most of the people that post are having problems, it certainly freaked me out a bit. But I was told by an admin that the majority of the thousands of members in that group don't comment because their hysterectomy went well, so they no longer have a need for a support group. Even after my surgery, I've kept up with the group, just to tell them how amazing I feel just three weeks post op, to give them hope. I'm also twice as educated about the procedure than many other group members, because of Dr. O'hanlan's amazingly helpful handout. I've sent it to so many people, and I'm shocked at what little they know about the procedure, even after seeing their surgeon, and I can't tell you how many group members have found that same handout anxiety reducing, as it certainly helps to know exactly what to expect pre op, during op, and post op. It certainly wasn't an easy surgery to have, being 29 years old and having no kids, but I was not living a productive life. I was covered in scar tissue from my first surgery (bowel resection) going terribly wrong, the doctor there was extremely negligent, refused to listen to my pain, and I had to convulse and flat line before he finally admitted I was septic. My journey from that surgery in 2004 to now has been a difficult one. I've had to accept disability at 25 years old, and I've been mostly housebound for the better part of the last year because I was so incredibly sick. First, no one really knew what was wrong. But they did see I had gallstones, so they decided to remove my gallbladder. During this operation (much more painful to recover from than my hysterectomy) the surgeon (NOT Dr. O'hanlan) was so shocked at the amount of scar tissue he saw, he took pictures. Once we had pictures to show that I was covered in scar tissue, so much so that my liver had bent over my gallbladder and a 45 minute outpatient procedure took two and a half hours and a week of recovery in the hospital, and even more time recovering at home, we at least knew what we were fighting. After that surgery I was healthy for a bit, but then I started getting INTENSE pain during my period, and even during ovulation. Knowing this I was referred to an OBGYN who did a transvaginal ultrasound and couldn't believe what she was seeing. My ovaries were literally encased in scar tissue, my uterus and my bowel were connected and twisted, and free fluid that we all have, was just stuck in between scar tissue, unable to move around, putting added pressure and causing me even more pain. Once my OBGYN saw this, she knew exactly who to go to, Dr. O'Hanlan. I'm three weeks post op and I have more energy than I've had in a long time, in fact I really feel like, if everything heals well, I'll actually be able to go to work. I'm so thankful Dr. O'hanlan did my surgery. For the person that went to a different surgeon simply because of the receptionist, I think you missed out on having a literal pioneer in her field, someone who has done over 2000 of these procedures with less than a 3% complication rate, and none of the complications were anywhere near being deadly. Twenty Two years ago, I was sent to Dr. Kate O'hanlan by my gynecologist from Tulare, due to a shocking diagnosis of cervical cancer. He told me he could do the surgery, but knew that Dr. Kate would be a better idea. I was in total shock because I had always been a completely healthy individual. She put my nerves at ease, arranged my surgery at Stanford within a week and did a phenomenal job with the surgery and follow-ups. Six months later due to the physician who gave me too much radiation, I had to have a bowel resection. While Kate was not on duty when I came into the hospital, she came to see me every day during my stay. Poor decision-making when she did an exploratory laparotomy on me for pelvic pain. She ended up doing a complete ovario-hysterectomy. I showed the video to another OB/GYN surgeon who said there was no reason to do any of it. She also advised me to NOT take much pain med in the hospital or after, & I followed this suggestion, not realizing how much pain I would be in once I left the hospital. It was excrutiating. I also had post-op complications of a large hematoma on my abdomen. She didn't advise that I meet her at her office nor go to the ER. It could have been serious. Luckily I recovered from that too. She had promised prior to surgery that she was an expert in balancing hormones with HRT; it took her over a year to get it right with me. I was miserable the whole time. Because she kept "holding my hand" and sweet-talking me through everything, I thought things would be ok. But I kept having pelvic pain and other issues. Once the 2 year post surgery date came up, she stopped taking my calls. Now I know she was scared of a malpractice suit, and I wish I had sued her. I was refer to this surgeon by the GP. After reading these reviews I had serious reservations about using her. During my phone consultation with her I asked where her office was assuming I would have a pre surgical appointment with her. She said she would meet me the morning of the surgery which is not normal protocol. The laptoscopic method using a laparoscopic bag to remove my ovarian tumor and hysterectomy would have been a disastrous as she likely would have ended up bursting or cutting up the tumor and spreding cancer cells throughout my abdomen. She would have only given me a 1 night stay in the hospital when I ended up being there 6 days due to a serious reaction I had to the anesthesia and the fact that the 2 1/2 hour surgery turned out to be over 4 hours due to adhesions the tumor had formed to my pelvis and the fact that it had become wrapped up in my intestines. If I had waited 30+ days for her surgical date my kidneys would have shut down as the tumor was pressing on them. My creatinine was 8.8 a few days prior to surgery which is why my surgeon tacked my surgery onto his schedule at 4pm on a Friday. Having worked in hospitals for many years I know this is not common practice. Heed the advice noted in prior reviews and RUN don't WALK away. My comments are RE her COMMUNICATION and COURTESY, and are NEGATIVE. Dr. O'Hanlan has operated on me three times for ovarian cancer: ten years ago, eight years ago, and January, 2014. The first two times were successful and uneventful, this third one has not been a charm. --the wrong procedure was called for on surgery day--I had to wait for a new OR setup; she "took responsibility." --she gave me fair warning that she'd be out of town following the surgery, but --didn't give me "what if" instructions, and chastised me for using my personal doc to help w/ subsequent complications --(okay, complications happen, so I'm told) I'm not ticked about them --the complications require a 3-doc surgery: O'H + urologist + intestine tailor; scheduling is a challenge --w/out consulting his office, scheduled one of them on his clinic day, of course he couldn't come --O'H later told me he had "accommodated" them to be able to come to my surgery--he hadn't --O'H scheduled a date anyway, then told me "not to worry" about who would be operating on me (as in "none of your business" or "don't worry your pretty head") --my personal doc called O'H to try to help schedule; O'H told her "you have no business being involved." (!!!) --didn't answer my phone calls for days and days; answered in 10 minutes when I used email. And told me not to use it. I used to think she was great. I that I don't any more. I was very impressed with Dr. O'Hanlan and her staff. A very detailed packet was mailed to me with an enormous amount of information including possible risks, preparation for surgery, what would be involved, what to expect, how to recover, etc. She personally called before my appointment, insisted that I call her Kate , asked if I had any questions after reading the packet and then told me what would be happening and why. Due to my far distance from her office, she scheduled the appointment and surgery on back to back days. Both my husband and best friend of 61 years accompanied me to the appointment and were very welcome by Kate and her staff. She reviewed the surgery again for their benefit and answered all questions that the three of us asked in great detail making sure we were comfortable with her explanations. My friend was so impressed with Kate that she took a business card in case she might need her expertise. She visited me the next day after I awoke and told my husband and myself what she had done and what to expect during the recovery. Today (12-14-16) 5 days after surgery, Kate called to ask how I was doing, if I was having any pain (nothing that 2 Tylenol and an Aleve a day can't handle), if I had any questions or concerns and when to schedule a follow-up appointment. I have 3 very tiny incisions through which she removed a tumor, ovaries, tubes, uterus, appendix and repaired a prolapsed vagina. I am extremely pleased with her. read more
