Once upon a time, the Tibetan Kitchen ruled the Tibetan food roost in Brisbane. Like the famed mountains of Tibet, it rode the highest peak and had the view all to itself from its perch on Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley. The food was always known as cheap and cheerful, a favourite of students, backpackers and locals who knew a good thing when they tasted it. They even opened another restaurant in Petrie Terrace to conquer both sides of town, but then along came Kathmandu Newa Chhe'n in Paddo. Now, I've dined many times at Tibetan Kitchen in both locations - love their Somar Curry with tofu, one of the best anywhere - so when Kathmandu opened we just had to see whether the mountain had indeed come to Mohammad. And we're happy, along with our stomachs, to report it has! Kathmandu's version of Sherpa's Chicken was excellent and moist in a creamy sauce of coriander, lime leaf and a sprinkle of lemon. Their Tofu Curry which was sauced in coconut milk and yoghurt and seasoned with Nepali spices wasn't quite as good as Tibetan Kitchen's which infuses it with diced lemon rind that just gives it a tart nudge which is simply delicious. Our third and final dish was the Garlic Macha which is fish cooked in a creamy sauce - most of the sauces are creamy with considerable use of coconut milk - with garlic, ginger and a touch of sweet chili sauce. It was pure pleasure on the palate, the fish poached perfectly and while not listed, we thought it was either sea bass, snapper or red emperor. Overall, we've found another Tibetan favourite to add to our restaurant list with an extensive menu that differs greatly from the Tibetan Kitchen, which is a good thing and shows individuality rather than a "wanna be." It's BYO but there's a bottle shop almost right across the street at Paddington Central so go, enjoy the menu and take your taste buds to new heights! read more
