The following is in regards to Kawaii Kon overall from 2017 - 2026. Kawaii Kon has always had a lot to offer from lots of different fan-made merchandise for sale, licensed merchandise for sale, panels, RC cars, gunpla, meet and greets with famous voice actors, concerts featuring bands and singers who have sung anime openings, and a lot more! It can be really hard to sum up the entirety of what one can experience while attending Kawaii Kon but it's the perfect gathering place for anyone who's into anime, manga, Japanese pop culture, or just overall cute things. While there are a lot of things that kids would enjoy at this convention, I would say that a lot of the content is catered more towards adults. The multi-day passes and single day passes have been increasing year after year and I highly recommend getting the early bird discount (usually offered on the last day of the current year's Kawaii Kon and a few days after that) to get the cheapest tickets for the following year. I also recommend buying early not just because it's cheaper, but also because you'll have the ability to pick up your pass before the actual convention (as of right now, only allowed for multi-day passes). If you choose to buy it at the door, good luck because that means you'll have to wait in a line that is usually pretty long! Note: Musical guests and panels are usually announced within one to two weeks before the start of the convention. Over the past few years, Kawaii Kon started using the Guidebook app which helps con goers see the timetable for all the events happening at Kawaii Kon as well as their respective locations. The app is really helpful with the way you can have it remind you 30 min or an hour in advance for events you want to attend. Why I attend Kawaii Kon: - I love being able to freely cosplay and participate in informal photoshoots with people cosplaying from the same series - Entry to all concerts is included in the pass fees (no extra charges!). Being able to see FLOW at the 2026 Kawaii Kon was such a treat - they were the ones that sang GO!!! from Naruto! - More recently, they started offering pro photography services for free, which works out for people who cosplay but might not have the money to pay for professional photos outside of Kawaii Kon. read more

Amazing convention and I heard they capped attendees at 15,000 and sold out. (damn). This place is outgrowing its spot and honestly it really is the premiere anime convention in Hawaii. I remember when it was still in its infancy and was only on one floor of the convention center (now they utilize all 3!). I had so much fun and it's definitely a tiring one if you attend all 3 days but from experience you learn to pace yourself and drink a sht ton of water to keep you going, as well as resting your legs. Even if you go on your own it's a happy fun time! I met up with some of my friends but majority of us all had our specific panels and events we wanted to attend. This is the 2nd year that my kids have attended Kawaii Kon (2023 and 2024) and they LOVED it. So much to do - shop for art, clothing, accessories, plushies, toys, models, and more in the exhibition hall (soooo many vendors); watch videos, read manga, play games, meet voice actors, listen to guest speakers, get autographs, etc. But my kids' favorite part was the the cosplay - planning and creating their costumes, showing it off and seeing how everyone else was dressed. The general atmosphere was fun and good natured. Plan ahead and purchase your tickets online to save money and time. Also, get there early as the wait time in lines to enter and get your passes can be brutal. Saturday is the busiest day of the convention. Buy a 3 day pass to get the most bang for your buck. Negatives - Parking at the Convention Center is limited and expensive. Best to park across the street at Ala Moana shopping center and walk over. Extremely overpriced concession food and drinks. $4 for a small bottle of water?!?!?!?!? Sneak in your own snacks if you can or leave to eat and come back. This year, there was a metal detector you had to pass through at the entrance - which added to the wait time getting in. read more

Kawaii Kon, Hawaii's first anime convention that started off at the ballrooms in the Ala Moana Hotel that then grew into the Hawaii Convention Center taking several ballrooms. Now it takes up almost all of the ballrooms and floor space at the Hawaii Convention Center. With their sister convention, Comic Con Honolulu. The one day passholders get paper colored wrist bands. While three day passholders get lanyards with a plastic three day passes. It a great convention for all things anime, video games, table top games, cosplay and meeting some celebrities guests getting their autographs and merchandise. Mainly anime, I've been to this convention a few times but took a break for a while. I always enjoyed seeing the bands and artists perform live in person because concerts are fun. The cosplay contest as well as opening ceremony is always very cool to attend as well. They have a "weapons" check to make sure it adheres to con rules. They had EMKE performing a lot at the cons but they changed their band name to Close the Distance. They have artist alley and dealers in the same Kamehameha 2 and 3 ballrooms. The cosplay cafe is on the 3rd level along with video games, table top and smaller speaking events in the other ballrooms. They have events for 18+ years at night due to the hentai and other explicit content. The 4th floor ballroom is used for main events, opening and closing ceremonies and concerts. There's water stations throughout the convention center, some coolers are colder than others but always well stocked. The bathrooms throughout the convention center are kept clean and stocked for the entire three day convention. Artist Alley has both local and mainland artists. Line first is always the con rule, same for theme parks. I'm not a big anime fan, more of a casual attendee. I haven't watch anime in years. These events are fun to attend casually even if you're not a big fan. But to see all the cosplayers, be in the fun atmosphere although a lot of body odors because some people forget to bathe during the three day convention. I think I'm growing out of attending anime and comic conventions but will occasionally come to see what's happening and if any interesting guests come by to visit. Food and parking at the convention center can be costly. So many people park at Ala Moana Center, walk over and then eat elsewhere to save money. Paying for autographs, photo with celebrities, dealers and artist alley merchandise can add up to be a lot real quickly. Like at theme parks with food and merchandise shopping. You'll see people passed out everywhere from being exhausted from the heat and doing long days at the convention. Parking at the Convention Center is now 12 dollars as of 2021. Friday is the least busiest day, best day to find those items that collectors want to get their hands on first. Saturday is the busiest, most events and most crowded day at the con. Sunday is one of the slowest day but with the most deals and discounts with whatever is left at artist alley and dealers. Most people get a one day pass for Saturday or 3 day pass early to save money. Be prepared to walk around a lot at the convention center throughout the con. There has been 10,000 to 20,000 people attending this con as it has grown over the years to one of the largest conventions in the state annually. Certain Japanese artists you can't take pictures of unless you pay or take it at opening ceremonies due to the agent rules from their companies as they are highly protective of their artists as Disney is of Marvel secrets. It always costs extra to meet and have photos. Always ask a cosplayer if you can have a picture before taking out of respect and cosplay rules as they would want to pose or have it a certain way. The only problem I had when COVID-19 happened, the convention was canceled. It took me over a year to receive my refund after emailing them over several months to get it. I had a special pass that costed a little more than the early entry prices that you can get while buying it early on the last day of the previous convention because it was supposed to be mailed to me instead of having to pick it up. It was easier getting my races that were canceled deferred or transferred to a virtual registration than to get this refund. They had to mail me a physical refund check because their Dyad, LLC is out of Georgia not locally in Hawaii. The con is run mainly by a large group of volunteers with some people actually working for the convention holder. Thank you to all the hard work the volunteers do into making this con fun to attend! For now, I'll be taking a break from attending cons and doing my races and athletic lifestyle. But I highly recommend this convention to anyone into anime, comics, video and table top games. It's one of the best small to medium sized conventions in the United States. It'll be fun to attend whenever conventions are able to be held again safely. read more

Arrived at the Hawaii Convention Center for the Kawaiicon 2022 at 7:20pm, stood in 2 different long lines, 1 for registration & 1 to get into the exhibition hall. I paid $90 for 2 1-day passes into the hall & $12 for parking. We stood in the lines for more than an hour & finally made it to the front doors 15 min before 9pm. At this point we were told that the hall was closed. So I literally paid $102 total for an event I didn't even get to go into. WTF!!!! I hope I can get my money back! No one made it clear to us that we had a time limit standing in the long lines & that we'd be turned away before 9pm. Such BS! It was a waste of time & money! read more

I recommend you prepay and register online and pay the rip off price of 2 or 3 days even if you are only going for one day. Since we were bringing our whole family and a kid's friend (5 of us plus a fres little one) we decided to do the walk in registration for one day and lived to regret it. We had no idea it was the line that never ended. It was like a horror version of Disneyland. At least in Disneyland they warn you of the wait time. Everytime we thought we reached the end we found out the line just continued. We ended up waiting 3.5 hours in line with the hope it was ending soon. By the time we got to the front and paid the $50 for each person we cheered to get in. However, we soon found out the kids were done already and soon after an announcement went off to say the merchandise area was closing soon. Everyone was a cranky mess. Wish I could of given this event 5 Stars but it was just poorly organized, registration wise. Hopefully they will improve the experience for next year!!!!!!!! I remember going to my first Kawaii Kon back when they used to hold it in the Ala Moana Hotel. It honestly is amazing to see how much it has grown since then. Kawaii Kon now takes place at the convention center during the spring. They stretch all the fun festivities over a weekend. I would have to say that the busiest day is Saturday. I used to dedicate myself to the full weekend of Otaku madness, but life gets busy and sometimes its hard to take off the entire weekend. Parking in the convention center cost $10. If you don't want to pay for parking you can try park else where, walk, cab or bus. The convention center is pretty easy to get to. Before I attended Comic-Con, I thought Kawaii-Kon was the most awesome event ever. After having attended Comic-Con, I still believe that Kawaii-Kon is pretty amazing. I have been attending annually for almost 10 years now. The Hawai'i Convention Center is a great location for this event. Though the Kawaii-Kon community holds events throughout the year. If you follow them on Facebook then you can meet people and take part in anything from beach days to cosplay events at Barnes and Noble or Eat the Street or any other place with an open mind for fun. If you intend to get the full experience, then pay attention to the early registration information on the website as the 3-day passes are more affordable if purchased in advance. They also sometimes sell early reg tickets at other expos. If you just want to see the cosplayers, then you don't have to buy tickets to sit in the main walkway. Though if you want to shop, look at art, attend a panel, watch movies, play games, or really participate in the real fun of Kawaii-Kon, then you need to buy tickets. I will add a final plug for the Star Wars debate panel that I hosted for the first time last year. Though there's something for everyone there ... Not just the anime or otaku fans. There's craft work, role play and fight training, even bon dancing, so come over and join in on the fun! read more

A 3 day convention in the heart of Honolulu celebrating Anime. If you plan to go I suggest preordering tickets and picking it up before the actual event (the lines were long on Saturday but moved pretty fast). Also if you get tired there are A/C'ed rooms where you can watch anime or read manga. PARKING: It costs $10 to park but that is what the convention center charges and not the actual Kon though it is for all day parking so my suggestion is to make a day of it because there are many dining options there and nearby (even some offering discounts if you show your badge). read more

This is a fun once or twice a year experience for all lovers of anime, gaming, Japanese culture, and more. I went for the first time this year on Sunday, the last day that they had this event. I loved to see everyone cosplaying as their favorite anime characters and was impressed to see some high quality outfits. I do think that it would be more fun to visit on Saturday instead of Sunday because the last day is cut pretty short while Saturday offers longer hours and more events. I saw people hanging out past 10 pm on Saturday. I did want more out of the experience though, because I felt that 90% of it was paying a good amount of money to walk through a maze of booths that sell goods so I can spend more money. I would go again because it was fun but I'll be aware that it's a kind of a trap to get your wallet loosey :) read more

It only comes annually, for 3 days, and I was lucky to get free admission for Saturday from Emi and the yelp team. Meaning to go every year, I never was able to make it until today. What a blast I had with my son now that he is older. It's a different world of anime characters and cos play in the little glass dome at the convention center located across from ala moana. As you enter the glass doors, there are people hanging outside taking pictures and enjoying interacting with other cos players without paying. They can also hang outside on the 3rd and fourth floors as well. There was a long line to register for 2 or 3 days, which I'm glad I bypassed because I got to walk straight to the information then the yelp booth to get my wrist bands for the day. The first floor room had a lot of booths to buy anime posters, comics, t-shirts, etc which aren't sold at regular stores. There was also a booth by the library that gave free items if you show your library card. There were also board games for those to challenge each other, as well as autographs of certain professionals. 3rd floor had a huge gaming room, video rooms as well as other rooms of different events. 4th floor also had special events, especially the cos play contest which we enjoyed, and live bands at night. It's like Halloween again, but with cool anime characters, role playing and events to enjoy the entire day. read more

I was so super happy to be able to attend Kawaii Kon this year! EMKE I have a new favorite local band that I had never heard of before until seeing them here at Kon. They were AWESOME! The 3 girls are the heart of the group. From what they said on stage, the lead singer and bass are sisters. The two of them did all of the audience engagement- they did poses, made the most fan contact and overall made the whole performance not about themselves but about the music engaging the audience. Rarely have I ever seen that and only from professional singers that are so comfortable with the music that they can free themselves to engage the audience in that level. From the bass girl- I got a EMKE music pick! Being able to be in the first row of people right up there at the stage really was great. They threw out t-shirts to fans too but I wasn't able to grab in time- just have to visit their autograph/ cd booth. EMKE does covers but better than the originals, B - Crazy in Love sounded to me better than the hip hop version. Def Leopard -Pour Some Sugar was better in person even though it is 30 years old it was an audience favorite. EMKE did some of their own works- this can be good or bad depending on the audience but the audience and I really liked their songs, they were seamlessly strung together because the band had an identity staying within their own lane style perfectly. I am a fan! Joe Inoue Concert Joe is talented. Joe engaged the audience in perfect American English with jokes and humor then have the music turned on and Joe totally flipped into perfect screaming Japanese metal rap. bless4 Concert I did look up to see what Friday's concerts were going to be so that I wouldn't miss them. I was glad I did- because I know what anime/ cartoon they sing for -even though I still haven't watched it. I can see how my adopted son really likes their music specifically as he watched that show that they sang 1 song from in the concert. The girls had matching opposite suits where 1 side was white and the other side was black. I could just see the girls as the next Batman villain duo. Bless4 had a booth at the Kon so it was easy to go up to them and talk if you wanted to before or after the show- or go to their autograph lines. Luna Haruna Concert Again- a great production of anime type music, just not my preferred style to listen to but I am so glad that I got to listen to them at the Kon. Hitbox Music Ensemble Hitbox was not really a set band but a group of touring musicians. They have played some of the great opera type works that I am familiar with - including Princess Monokie and Zelda. They were wonderful! Beautiful orchestra full musical powerful feelings behind just a few band members that really gave a stellar performance. I missed them at the HSO concert but this was a super concert that I got to be so close to the action! Karaoke Finals Anna did Les Mis On My Own in a white dress that I think won her the competition even though it was not a cosplay song or really an audience favorite but she did well for such a hard song, the guy did Death of a Bachelor and the Pokemon theme song in the boy human outfit, the second girl did a Sailor Moon song in sailor moon outfit. Anna won the 2017 show finally judged by EMKE. I missed the butishake because I mistakenly asked someone near the area if it was just a dance or if it was a concert- and they said it was just a dance. I should have read the bio more which said, "World famous music producer Taku Takahashi will start off this dance event with an hour performance, followed by our unique AMV dance djed by our very own DJ buma!" I would have really enjoyed it but it sounds like it has been a yearly fan favorite so if I am lucky enough to be able to attend Kon next year I will surely put it on my for sure to do list. Open Karaoke I know- this is a no judgment zone. People got to sing their hearts out and they played a bunch of music that I am not familiar with - fan favs included stuff that is anime themed. I got to attend some of the panels. One panel was 2 UH professors that discussed J-Pop and K-Pop. They had really insightful views. I learned a different perspective. They shared that they are watching BabyMetal from Japan and Exo from Korea for the next big things to happen in the music industry from them. The most elaborate fantasy realistic dresses were the - BABY, The Stars Shine Bright. I think they had the most beautiful dresses at the Kon. They looked like over the top Alice in Wonderland pink outfits that were just intricately laced. There was also the DC and Marvel Universe meet ups on the 3rd Floor. I didn't know they were meeting there at those times as I was walking through them. I was thinking to myself- "no this isn't a coincidence that all these characters in cosplay are from the same genre." I saw another Yelper in cosplay but her eyes were lens so I don't think she saw me waving at her. read more

In recent years, the convention scene in Hawai'i has exploded to offer something for everyone. Kawaii Kon has been around for a long time, but 2017 was my first time attending. The organizers have branched out with Comic Con Honolulu, which is why I chose to splurge and attend KKon too. The convention is three days of everything anime and otaku; despite having a Japanese focus, there really was more general pop culture experiences than I thought there would be. Like many conventions and events, the sooner you pre-purchase tickets, the cheaper they are. If you plan on going, be sure to buy early. It also saves you the time of registering at the door. KKon is membership based, which are available for single days or the whole weekend. I wanted to say thank you to the organizers for supporting local clubs and the discounted passes available through them; it's a nice gesture to the fanbase. Three day passes range from $48 to $63 depending on when you buy them, this may seem a lot for some, but you have to remember the event is a non-profit; all the money is going to renting the space and bringing guests. Passes could be picked up the Thursday evening before the convention and each day of the events. Lines were well organized and managed; signage is big, colorful and clear. The staff is all volunteers and all the interactions we had with them were professional and courteous. They're there because they love it, not to make money. Registration and information booths were kept separate and outside the convention room. A bag with a program was given to all attendees; lanyard and plastic badge for 3-day and wristbands for single days. The convention is huge and spread out, nothing is cramped or uncomfortable. The main exhibition hall had the bulk of the activities. Immediately to the left was the board/card game area including booths from Da Planet and Armchair Adventurer. Tournaments, demos, and free play were open all weekend. Games were free to borrow, only an ID was required. Next to this area was Artists' Alley, where local and other artists had booths to sell prints, original artwork, and demo their craft. Many were outwardly friendly and had extremely creative items; it was just fun to look. On the curtain separating these two areas was a silent art auction, which had both for-profit works and charity works; at the information booth you could bid on these pieces the first two days and pick up any winnings on the third. The convention center refreshments booth was open and at the back of the hall, with lots of tables to relax and eat. The entire middle of the room was kept bare to give plenty of walking space. Autograph and signing area was at the back right, where celebrities signed and did photos (some free, others for a small fee). The line areas were also spacious, so it looked like a pleasant experience to wait here. The entire rest of the right side of the hall were vendors with everything from clothing to weapons (both real and props), toys, plush items, model kits, and food! Some stands were bargain, others had fixed prices. Many were local small dealers, but stores from around the state also brought a selection. I was personally happy to find non-Japanese/anime items like Star Wars, comics, and others. Upstairs had club tables in the main atrium, with a video game room, panel rooms, and anime library and fundraiser cafe. The video game room was fun to see all the tournaments and small matches; it's amazing how good some people are at pushing buttons. Panels were hosted all weekend by various clubs, groups, and individuals about TV, movies, and any aspect of otaku culture. The top floor had the main event stage for large gatherings like the opening and closing ceremonies, cosplay contest, and concerts. Restrooms are everywhere, and are kept clean throughout the convention. Water machines are also plentiful and free. Food is available inside, although pricey and limited. With the convention badge, you can get discounts on nearby restaurants, so you're best off taking a walk and break away to eat. Be sure to download the Kawaii Kon app for specific information, maps, and schedules. The convention center is comfortable, with seating everywhere but does get hot when not in the enclosed rooms so plan accordingly. The panels with guest speakers were on the upper floors, which was good, as that was the only reason that I was able to get to them. It was a nightmare going to the place and getting parking, despite how early I got up. The staff was...not doing the best job of organizing the crowds, and after multiple mix ups in their line organizing, one employee began yelling at people for being in the long line. Don't waste your time or money. These people don't deserve it. read more

The way many Anime Cons begin are with the fans. Someone decides why not do one to bring like minds together, get to know who we are and have a good time. Then, it's realized they have similar interests in cosplay, games of all platforms, related products, shows, etc. On the web page, the show is defined.... "Kawaii Kon is a 3-day convention that celebrates Japanese anime (cartoons), manga (comics), and all facets of Japanese culture. We offer a variety of events and activities throughout the weekend. From video games, table top games, costume contests, thousands of manga to read, a talent-filled Artist Alley, an expansive Dealer's Room, formal ball, we have something for everyone!" It continues to be a gathering of like minds celebrating their like interests. That's a good thing. Now they know who they are. But, what's next? It's not for me to dictate what the show should do, maybe continue gathering like minds to celebrate their like interests? I feel there can be a better purpose. Educate the fans to be professionals in the culture they love to ensure their culture survives, thrives and grows. Many other Anime Cons have already taken up this path. Here, in Hawaii, being in the location we are in offers opportunities , easy and challenging. Hawaii is the cross road between Asia and mainland USA. Who doesn't want to come to Hawaii? Get the professionals to come here to educate those interested in a career. Not just artist, writers, professional cosplayers, voice actors, etc. How about the president of Tokyo Pop who announced this year they are planning to come back into North America? What about the directors, producers of big movies coming out? Would have been nice to have the show feature the initial trailer viewing of Attack on Titan or Assassination Classroom. I'm sure they wouldn't mind getting featured. How do you become an artist, a writer... how do I break in.... can I really make a living on this? These are some questions many fans are asking and are not getting the right answers. Nor is there support for this. Kawaii Kon has the opportunity to not only answer these questions but provide the platform where the support can be developed. I have to give props to the San Diego International Comic Con for lowering their one day show, Sunday only, fee to $10. This has had big positive impacts for everyone all arounds, specially the dealers, allowing people on a tight budget to experience and learn what this culture is all about. I believe this could serve the con well too. Kawaii Kon is lots of fun. I highly recommend bringing the whole family. The events, the panels, accessing artists and dealers, all add to a fantastic experience filled with hopes. It would be nice to see this continued for a long time. The workers are even not as rude as they used to be There's not much I can write about KK because it is an ever changing entity, always renewing always growing, but you should definitely visit this convention. Whether you're into anime or comics, video gaming or Japanese fashion, or even if you're into none of those things and just want to look at all the costumes, I highly recommend getting a ticket to Kawaii Kon next year. read more

I know my review is a little late ... I don't know what took me so long to write one! I have been going to Kawaii Kon, like Ariana, way back when it used to be at the Ala Moana hotel. I have a family member that volunteers every year for this, so I am fortunate enough to get a free 3 day pass :D Yay for me!! Kawaii Kon is one of Hawaii's biggest anime conventions. Over 10 years and still going strong!! When they used to have them at the Ala Moana hotel, it was a little disorganized and panels, dealers room and such were spaced out so far from each other. Looking back you can see how much they have grown and got their stuff together! Things now are so much better organized!! It's now held at the Hawaii Convention Center, which is awesome! Kawaii Kons popularity has grown so much attendance wise. I'm very happy for them! Just remember, as they gain more followers, you'll see better and better guests and vendors coming. I'm pretty sure it's standard with any anime convention .. My very favorite year, hands down was 2012. I went with a good friend of mine, Jesse ... he made a Gundam out of cardboard ... it was so epic. Technically, Saturday (which is the day you really want to be there) I 'helped' him out when he went and cosplayed as the Gundam, I led him around and held his weapons. And let me tell ya ... just cause it's made out of cardboard doesn't mean that it was light at all! His helmet didn't give him much room to move around so that's where the guiding came in. I remember at one point I had to use the bathroom so bad that l left him standing there on the 3rd floor by himself. When I came back he was surrounded by people taking his picture. He said all he could see was flashes and he was wondering where I went. It doesn't seem funny, but I died laughing. I really did have fun though and I got some great pictures of everyone! AND .... I got to meet Johnny Yong Bosch ... The black ranger for those who don't know who he is ... and shame on you for not knowing!!!! He did a panel, joked around and sang some songs ... I recorded the whole thing .. le sigh ... When I did finally get to get his autograph and take a picture with him I was dying inside .... He smelled sooooo good :| That's right ... I said it. His cologne smelled damn good! I'm not a stalker or anything ... But, he proceeded to draw horns and a beard on my picture of him .... as I silently screamed "noooooooooo" ... it was all in good fun .. I did get to take a picture with his band Eye Shine as well ... Heart them! The vendors are outstanding! They have a lot of really good ones that continue to keep coming!! I personally love artist alley ... I buy so many things there!!! I love the cosplaying. It's so exciting to see what everyone is going to be dressed up as! The creativity and imagination of everyone in the cosplay community is superbly awesome! Hopefully next year I'll be good enough to cosplay in mine :D It's a secret!!! All in all ... I came here with my daughter and her friends, because I think anime shows and art are fun and cute. I enjoyed listening to a performance of Hanafugetsu, a modern Japanese trio of musicians who use traditional instruments: koto, shakuhachi and keyboards. I was a little disappointed that there weren't that many people wearing original cosplay costumes, though. I think we'll have to make a trip to Japan and get off at the Harajuku subway station to see more of that! read more

This is my 2nd Kawaii kon this year. I always got the One day pass. I went on Saturday in 2014 but this time i went on Friday. It was kinda disappointing this year...or today (Friday). I am not sure. I think because it was the first day...alot of bendors were not there and there was not lot to do...if you are going for one day, saturday is the best day!! read more

After years and years of Kawaii Kon passing me by, I finally had the chance to go! I went all out by buying a three-day pass as well as hoteling at the Ala Moana Hotel. Although I was very hesitant in buying the three-day pass (due to expenses), I do not regret it at all. There were many panels and workshops that interested me such as "Living in Japan as a Foreigner" and "Teaching in Japan." There are also a lot of other things to do like gaining autographs, recreational panels, watching anime, and checking out the merchandise. Merchandise: There are two sections for vendors of company named items and local artists with their merchandise. It can vary by day but of course, Sunday would have the least amount of items. With the perks of Sunday, some things may be put on sale. There are a lot of things to talk about but in all honesty, a huge anime fan or not, you make the experience what it is. You should try it at least once! read more

[Location & Parking] Kawaii Kon is a 3 day (friday-sunday) anime convention held at the Hawaii Convention Center around late March or early April. Parking is expensive at $10/car but it's good for the entire day, no in/out privileges. This convention (2016), they had to utilize the overflow parking lot but even that lot became full so be aware that parking can get bad. [Service] Keep in mind that this event is run by volunteers. They try really hard to make sure the Kon is enjoyable for all. I know how stressful it can be at times because I was once a volunteer myself. The best advice I can give attendees is to pre-register. When you purchase passes at the door, the line is REALLY long. I know some people who had to wait for almost an hour to purchase their pass. If you do pre-register, you have the option to pick up your pass thursday night or you can breeze through the pick-up line on the day of the event [Events] There are so many things to do at Kon. I'm never bored. There's video rooms so you can watch anime, manga library where you can read manga, video game room (heads up it can get smelly in there -__-), and many many panels you can attend. Some of the major events include the cosplay showcase where the best of the best cosplays compete for the title, Karaoke competition, and concerts. One of my favorite rooms is the dealer/artist alley room. There are so many cute merchandise you can purchase. Prepare, your wallet will be empty before you exit the room. [Overall] You do not have to dress up in cosplay to attend Kawaii kon. Please, please try to pre-register to make it easier for yourself so you don't need to wait in a long line. Try to carpool with your friends so you all don't need to pay a lot of money for parking. read more

For context, I'm not into anime, manga, and I'm not a gamer. I lived in Japan for several years and an not a fan of the Otaku scene. So why did I go here? I wanted to see it for myself. I was impressed with the vendors. Good selection and quality of artwork, t-shirts and plushies. I was impressed with the humor on many of the items. I particularly laughed when I saw an illustration of Darth Vader holding a "#1 Dad" mug with Luke and Leia annoyed in the background. I attended a Fan Fiction seminar. Didn't know there were so many genres and they provided a lot of helpful tips about copyrights, grammar, and best practices. Yes, there were odd questions like how do you write fan fiction in a language you made up yourself. The panelists were nice and spoke about the difficulties of creating grammar and cautioned against doing it. This felt like a college literature seminar. I also attended a seminar on cosplay make up and techniques. NO personal interest here, but I was trying to expand. While the tips were useful, it would have benefited from more structure. Also it was hard to hear the presenters at times. All in all, a much more positive experience that I expected. Plan to attend next year and go to more of the presentations. read more

Attended Kawaii Kon for the first time this year came away satisfied. I love watching anime and seeing all the amazing cosplayers. There were some long lines waiting for tickets but it goes by fast. I really like all the local business vendors and all the products they have to offer. The artist alley way is filled with tons of cool artwork from many different shows. I didn't really have enough time to check out any of the special guests that came, I'll try and check them out at the next one. Overall, I had an awesome time going to my first Kawaii Kon and will definitely be coming back. 5 shakas out of 5! read more

I had been anticipating Kawaii Kon ever since the last Kawaii Kon, which I didn't get to go to. The ticket was a little pricy, which is why I asked for a ticket for my birthday. When I got there, it was what I expected it to be. AMAZING. It's a much more fun experience if your cosplaying. A few people might even ask to take a picture with you. Everybody is friendly, and you feel like you know everbody. If you go on a Saturday, I would suggest going to the costume contest, which was really cool to watch. I would not suggest to go there if you are just going to go shopping, because a lot of the things there are expansive, plus, the ticket was too. It is really cool seeing fanart for sale. I went on a Saturday, but next time, I'm thinking of going on a Sunday, because not only is it cheaper, but there are just as many events, one of them is getting to do QNA with anime characters. Next time, I'll also buy a ticket online, because it is cheaper. I really enjoyed Kawaii Kon, and plan on going to the next one (I'm going to be hyped for a while again)! read more

I have to say this is my most favorite review EVER! I don't think a review for anything else can top this. I have been going to KawaiiKon for the last five or six years and I have to say every year just gets better and better! I will admit last year 2014 was pretty epic since it made 10years. Three whole floors of madness!!!! But this year wasn't that bad. I usually stay in the Artist Alley and Dealers Room spending money on all kind of things. I loved the cosplayers this year. I've never seen people actually put some effort into looking like their favorite character. I thought that only happened in mainland Comic Cons but man or man this year took the cake! My favorite was the KakashiCouple. They were just so cute! Now if you are attending KawaiiKon for the whole weekend I would say get a room at the Ala Moana Hotel. Other than that $10 parking at the convention or you could park your car at AlaMoana Shopping Center. This year I actually got two free admissions to Satuday so I got to go two days in a row! It was so much fun. I already can't wait for next year! read more
