I think we are so blessed to have such even every Memorial Day to a point that I see visitors who come here just for this and that says a lot. With work I personally never have the moment to participate as you need to line up early to pick up a lantern I was fortunate enough that a friend did that for me and here I am nervous and emotional not knowing where to begin. I think that's the therapy as well to express yourself in grief, anger, or sadness as I watched my lantern float away to a point that I don't know which on it is amongst the many others just looking at the serene vibe standing in the water is a sense of calm. The lantern floating ceremony is one of the most spectacular event you can attend in Honolulu, Hawaii. It take place at the Ala Moana Beach Park. This event is to memory the loss of someone in your life, They give out free lanterns. It is first come first serve, so you have to get there early in the morning to reserve it. Last year, I got there at 5 AM to stand in line, the ceremony start at around 6:30PM. After the official program, all the attendances can start release the lanterns after the sunset. It is a pretty emotional event, but also spectacular to watch with thousands of lanterns floating on the water. This year was the first time I got to attend the Shinnyo Lantern Floating Festival. I've always been meaning to go but it was always hard to find parking. This year, I made it a point to park at Ala Moana with my mom and walk to the beach about 30 min. before the event started. To be really close to the shore and find an area to sit at, I wouldn't surprised if you people had to come at least 2-3 hours in advance, especially since they hand out the free lanterns earlier in the day. In terms of things I recommend you bring, just bring what you usually would when you want to chill at the beach: sunscreen, hat/sunglasses, light clothing, beach mat and non-alcoholic drinks + food! It was so cool to see how they had different performances (hula and taiko from what I remember). They have giant screens with subtitles at the bottom so everyone can hear/see what's going on. You can also see how much love that people have for their loved ones that have passed on through this event. It's very touching. read more

It was my first time coming to the lantern festival and this event was so special and was put together so beautifully. I didn't have to stand in line for a lantern since someone else got it for me. The line started at 10am and from what I heard they still had about 2k lanterns left around 3pm. Ala Moana beach is generally NOT dog friendly at all and they've been cracking down on citations ($200) if you have your dog at this park. Luckily all the police officers were so nice for this event and allowed it as an exception (I suppose). There was also other people that brought their dogs with them too. I was on the other hand extra cautious knowing that my son isn't supposed to be there so I tried my best to hide him in a bag nonetheless, I'm so happy that they allowed them to be with us because we were there to honor our dog, Nala that night. We parked at the mall and walked over - at about 530 there was still a good amount of space on the sand, but then the entire beach was packed around 615 or so. We decided to stay where we were and still got a good bite of the screen. However only the main screen above the stage was on during 615-630 when they had a performer prior to the event. The program itself was so beautiful and so organized. I found out that her holiness was actually equivalent to the pope. I've also never seen a taiko performance with background music like that before. It was simply amazing and so touching. We got to launch our lanterns around 7pm. There was a lot of people. Some stayed put and some went into the water. It was cordial despite the amount of people that was there. There are people with lighters for your candle but if you already have one with you would be handy too I also lost a slipper to the ocean that night but luckily a nice man found it and gave it back to me .... read more

WOW...This was one of the most memorable things I have ever done. It was beautifully organized and the entire event went smoothly without any issues or drama. I was so impressed that I want to come back again next year!!! Only ONE lantern per person now. TIPS: -Bring a lawn chair to sit on the beach so you can be comfortable during the event. This was my first time so I brought a beach mat and it was not very comfortable. Ha. -Bring a selfie stick so you can take really good video and pictures above the crowd like I did. I got really good pictures and video of the event for my mom and family to see. -We arrived three hours before the event and got good parking at the Ala Moana mall. Since we conveniently parked in the parking lot, we were able to drop our beach items off and eat dinner at the food court at the mall. -plan to go early so you can get a good spot, bring water and snacks. PROS -excellent location and there's plenty of public transportation to and from the event. -beautifully organized & memorable event to pay tribute to your love ones that you have lost -super easy process to pay tribute for someone. Just go into one of the tents and everything is very easy to do & pens provided -You have three options to pay tribute: you can submit youyour tribute online via their website by a certain date, you can go in the day of event to write your message and they pospost it on the lantern, or you can build your own lantern to customize it. -staff is extremely helpful, friendly and patient -I really liked how you can take a picture with your lantern and they provide a nice backdrop for you -I could not believe how smooth this even went without any issues or people causing problems. Back home in California, there would always be some incident with someone being disruptive. -The entire ceremony before releasing the lanterns was emotional and nice CONS -can't even think of one negative thing to say about this event because it was so well done. I hope I get the chance to come back next year again. This time I will definitely customize and build my own lantern. I really enjoyed seeing how creative people were in customizing their lanterns. The lantern floating ceremony gave me many emotions. This was my first time participating in the ceremony. The mixture of the Japanese and Hawaiian culture through the drumming was extra special for me. The warm water the background of the sunset setting and the music in the background, gave it magical and peaceful experience. Even though myself and all the other patrons were paying tribute to someone that passed away that they loved dearly. It was a nice way to send off those you lost and or remember those that are missing. My day stated at 8:30am, waiting in line for a float. The beach was already packed with tents and beach chairs. The line for the floats was long. I worried that I would not get a float. When the line opened at 10 AM, I was in and out of there at 10:36Am. The Event Coordinators had everything set up under a tent and it ran smoothly. They also had tables set up for those who wanted to decorate their floats at the location. I took my float home to work on it with my family. I made a quick stop at Walmart to pick up a few things on my way home. Mental note, get your things ahead of time. All the crafts supplies were slim Pickens because of all the graduations. It took me over an hour to fine glue that was not washable. After we worked on the float for my Dad, My family and I packed a picnic lunch, our beach chairs and headed to the beach at around 4pm. It was hard to find parking round that time. So if you don't want to walk. I suggest you arrive at the beach earlier. After bit of a walk, we found our place on the beach, close to the water and in view of the big screen. The Ceremony started at 6:30pm. They had placed volunteers to light your lanterns at around 7 PM. Although there was thousands of people heading to the water at the same time, it was pretty civilized. Everyone took their time, there was prayers, tears, and hugs and then the next group of people had a turn. I had wanted to give my Dad a special send off. The floating lantern ceremony made it special. If you choose to go to the ceremony next year, Remember after the ceremony, when you're heading to the parking lot across the street at the mall. Do not go towards the little small bridge. There was a traffic jam at the bridge and it took a while with thousands of people trying to push through. There was no order and or lines. So I'm going to refrain from throwing in my usual humor as the ceremony is a fairly somber, emotional event. The lantern floating event is an annual ceremony held on Memorial Day in May, where people memorialize their lost loved ones as well as military personal who paid the ultimate price, by decorating a floating lantern with prayers, thoughts, wishes, photos, and love and then release all together in an emotional ceremony. The lantern are free and distributed first come first serve at 10:00 AM at a big tent at Ala Moana beach park. They give them away until 4:00 PM or when they run out. Line is horrendous so get in line around 8:30 AM. The lanterns themselves are prevented from going into the open ocean by rope that stretches the opening of the bay and are collected at 8:30 PM by canoe clubs and refurbished for next year. The lanterns come in two forms: communal wooden lanterns where the hopes, prayers, and thoughts of people who submitted online are written on by volunteers and the foam lanterns people can pick up for free to which you can decorate as you see fit before the launch time. Crowds are gigantic, literally tens of thousands of people. You will likely never see Ala Moana beach that full for any other event. Parking is free at the convention center with a free shuttle. There is limited parking on site. Ceremony starts at 6:30 PM, with songs, chants and speeches about the ceremony and Memorial Day. Floating time is around 7:00 PM and volunteers will light the candles within the lantern and ensure no one releases before that time while multiple canoes start the launch by paddling past while placing the communal lanterns into the water. Usually, I'm very anti-crowd and extremely anti-bad parking, but this is the exception. Tips: If you merely want to watch the ceremony but are concerned about parking, go shopping and get dinner at Ala Moana around 4:30-5:00 and walk over at 6:00-6:15 PM if you don't mind standing. Some people make a whole day of this, but hundreds of people show up at the last minute and parking at the mall is generally pretty easy to find, even if you do have to walk a bit over to the beach. Photographers, the best shots are from the water, so bring a water bag and good balance as you don't want to lose your camera to the drink. Action cameras and smartphones are basically garbage once the sun begins to set, so bring a real camera and possibly a waterproof case. For the 2018 ceremony, there were at least two dozen people with large cameras. Be respectful of those launching lanterns as it's a private emotional event, despite being in a massive crowd. Some participants are the on verge of crying. Also be courteous to other photographers in staying out of their frame when possible. If you can watch from an apartment high above, the view is amazing. After you launch, stick around for a while. I personally find when the bay is full of lanterns after almost everyone has launched to be the only time the full effect of the ceremony hits. Just thinking about it at first, i was already stressing but nope, it was peaceful, relaxing and I really get very emotional with the performances. The bipolar weather-- we were not prepared. This was my very first year attending the Lantern Floating Ceremony! It truly is a wonderful event. Great way to honor our loved ones we lost. They distribute lanterns on the morning of the event at Ala Moana Beach Park. Lanterns are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. They have a writing area available, however I took mine home to write on. It is extremely crowded. So come mentally prepared for that. I wish they offered the lantern floating at multiple beach locations, I think that would help with the crowds. read more

I had heard about this event since moving to Hawai'i, but I didn't grasp the experience until going myself. I never would have gone if it wasn't for the dedication and meaning that Kristine finds, which makes it more special for me. The Lantern Floating Hawaii event is a memorial celebration of life and loved ones who have left us, a way to make them seem like they're enjoying the gorgeous beaches and sunsets of Hawaii nei together. The event begins very early the day of. It's held on Memorial Day each year, which is the last Monday of May. You have to arrive early to get in line for the free lantern kits. Lines get long quickly and they do run out. If you aren't creating and launching a lantern, there's no point in attending the ceremony in person on the beach; please be considerate and stay from the water to let those with lanterns launch them in peace. The tents and queues are organized and staffed by various volunteer groups. You'll receive a reusable bag with a foam boat, candle, and paper lantern with stickers to attach. Let your imagination go wild decorating and don't worry about attaching other items as they're cleaned up that night by other volunteers. You have all day to decorate the lanterns, they have limited craft supplies and tables available at pickup. The evening ceremony starts at dusk with music, benedictions, hula, and dignitary speeches. Local news channels create videos of notable people lost throughout the last year. If crowds and beaches aren't your thing, the ceremony is televised live. Crowds gather quickly; I have never attended anything as busy here as this event. The entire Ala Moana Beach is covered with people extending from Magic Island toward Ward. The magic time is right around sunset when large outriggers paddle quietly toward the stage and begin depositing lanterns. At this time, people are encouraged to release your lanterns as well. The only negatives to this event are rude people and crushing crowds; it's very easy to get separated or lost so keep your children close. This is not a good event to bring pets as they could be trampled. Also be sure to keep electronics away when launching, as you often have to wade to your waist or deeper to release. This was one of the most magical events I've ever been too. Aside from the movie "Tangled" making me want to partake in a floating lantern festival, there's another reason this event was a must-see for me. Okay, *Nerd Alert* time. I enjoy video games (I know, you wouldn't know it by looking at me) and my all time favorite video game is Final Fantasy X. In that game, there is a pivotal scene where one of the main characters performs a ritual (sending) to send the souls of those who've passed on to the Farplane (heaven). If you're familiar with this game, you'll know what scene I'm talking about. The souls materialize as balls of light that fly around and float in the air. Participating in this event was probably the closest thing to bringing that scene to life for me. Although the lanterns themselves aren't actually the souls of the dead, the beauty of writing a prayer or short letter to/for a loved one that's passed on is similar to this concept. The ceremony beforehand was beautiful, and incredibly organized. I was surprised at just how organized the entire event was. Once the ceremony was over, everyone was herded to the water to begin lighting their lanterns. My husband and I shared a lantern and wrote a short letter to two family members we both held dear. It was quite an emotional moment to be able to light the candle on the lantern and watch as it floated away into the horizon. Some tips to remember: - Get there early! The line was SUPER long to get lanterns and they only have a limited amount. Once they're gone, they're gone. - You cannot pick up more than one lantern. If you are hoping to grab one for a friend, they will not let you. Each person has to come and get theirs individually. - Consider bringing a lawn chair to sit in while waiting for the line to go down. I didn't do this and ended up having to use my jacket to sit on. - Plan to be out there for most of the day as it will be difficult finding parking if you come back too close to when the ceremony starts. We grabbed our lantern in the morning but then came back in the afternoon and parked at the mall, then waited around until the ceremony started. Although there are other places to park, Ala Moana is probably your best bet. - There are a LOT of people. Again, get to the ceremony early so you can find a spot up close to the water as it will get pretty "herdish" once the ceremony ends and everyone starts rushing to the water. read more

This had to be the most organized and well planned festival I have ever enjoyed. I recommend grabbing a lantern for yourself at 10:00 am when the tent starts giving them out, usually a lantern per family, line is very long but don't worry it moves amazingly fast. After getting home and putting my lantern together and having my family dedication set up, we decided to head to the beach at 5:00 pm. The best place to park for us was at Ala Moana mall and walk across the street to get to the beach. Please remember to bring only a blanket to sit on and have it rolled up when you are ready to float your lantern, so not being a tent or umbrella for it will block other people trying to get to the water to float their lantern. The ceremony was beautiful and the music was lovely. Everyone was so kind and respectful, there was no shoving no fighting, everyone calmly walked to the water to float their lanterns and say their goodbyes. Pictures do not do it justice, the view was so beautiful in person, seeing the floating lanterns on the water with the sunset and pink skies, it felt like I was watching heaven. I absolutely recommend having this experience once, to enjoy the beauty of Hawaii and honoring those who have passed. read more

How can you rate this event other than 5 stars? Here are some tips... Park at Ala Moana. Park by the Foodland there. It's a straight walking shot across the street. If you are getting a lantern go early, but not right when it opens up. When you head back, come early, and park at Ala Moana, as the same spot. Make your way towards the water, or you'll get stuck in the back with just a few thousand people between you and the water. Wear flip flops because you need to get in the water to launch the float, and it will be knee deep. It's a powerful event, with good music, a professional production, and lots of families around. When it's all done, go grab a beer or shop for a bit at the mall until the crowd and traffic dies down. read more

I've participated in the Lantern Floating Memorial several times before, but events like these, really doesn't hit home until you've lost someone close and dear to you. Each year on Memorial Day, Shinnyo-en Hawaii, and generous volunteers, help to make this such a meaningful and successful event. In addition to the people of Hawaii, participants also include those who have traveled in from other states and countries just to be a part of this special memorial. Hundreds of people begin lining up hours before the distribution of laterns begin at 10am. Distribution continues until 4pm or until laterns run out. One per person or group, and more than 7000 lanterns were handed out this year. The unassembled lantern comes in a reusable shopping bag, and is simple to put together. Just follow the instructions and write your message on it before you assemble it. By the way, the lantern is free, but donations are welcomed. At approximately 6pm, the pre-ceremony begins. About a half hour later at 630pm., the ceremony takes place, and people gather together as families and friends begin making their way to the designated shoreline where the lanterns will be released. A volunteer will light the candle in your lantern before you let it go. Later, volunteers will retrieve them so that they can be cleaned and stored for refurbishment in future years, and remembrances and prayers are removed and handled appropriately in a spiritually respectful way. Memorial Day, May 29, 2017, made it exactly 5 months since my mother's passing. Time flies, and I miss my bff and foodie roll dawg like crazy. I have to admit I don't spend a lot of time memorializing - maybe it's the lingering pain of loss but I just don't do it much, I'll acknowledge but I don't really grieve. Lantern Floating gives you that chance to release your feelings, to honor your loved ones by taking a moment to remember them, and then to light their way as you send your memories out and beyond. Not only is this intensely personal, but when you're experiencing this with thousands of other people, all sharing these feelings at once, it becomes a truly beautiful expression, and I felt the power of it throughout. It's not an emotional downer, it's the purest grief I've ever felt, and thereby simultaneously a moment of joy. So l'm not going to "review" this event - I suppose if it wasn't executed well and there were logistical issues etc then maybe it'd be worth mentioning, but it's incredibly well run and clearly spectacular to watch. This is more a function of the times, but the only thing I'd change is if they could ask for some "no photo" time early on. Everyone gets caught up in capturing it all for social media (inclusive) that I think we do lose out a bit on the action itself. We went to the temple the day prior and wrote out a short message to be included on the wooden boats. In the event we were there again, I'd probably go to the park early for an individual lantern and make it an all-day event as most others do, just because you have more space and time to reflect on your messages, and you get the chance to launch your lantern personally. read more

While in Oahu, we got to experience one of the most inspiring events on the island, the Lantern Floating Hawaii ceremony. Every year on Memorial Day, about 40,000 go to Ala Moana Beach Park to honor their loved ones in remembrance with a floating lantern during the ceremony. This event was run with a surgeons precision starting exactly at 6:30 and ending at 7:30. If you want float a lantern, you go down to the beach after 8am in the same day and pick up your free lantern, and write your remembrances on the panels and then go back to the beach for the ceremony at 6:30. Even though the event is produced by the Buddhist Church, everyone is welcome and the ceremony embraces all and all religions. A really nice event, and the views of everyone floating their lanterns into the dark night harbor is visually powerful and stunning. A really wonderful event and gave us time to reflect on what's really important in life and that's your family and friends, and holding the memories of those that have passed before us. read more

05/26/14 I attended the event in 2014 and found it to be a lovely and magical night. Lantern Floating Hawaii is ultimately about the people who get a lantern, write their special messages to deceased love ones, prayers to their God, hopes for the world and much more, and then place it in the water for the tide to take out to sea. At the conclusion of the ceremony, as in past years, all lanterns were collected from the ocean and restored for use in the upcoming years. It is very much like lighting a candle in a Roman Catholic Church or writing a prayer on a piece of paper and then burning it as you watch the smoke rise to the heavens. What you ultimately take from it is up to you. It comes down to faith. For some the event was just fun, for some symbolic, but, for far more, something very spiritual as you could clearly see in their tears. I floated a lantern and included messages for many of my loved ones long gone. Do I believe that they will get them? I don't honestly know. But, I do hope so. All the different people... Every race, color just coming together to share. It's just so beautiful. read more

This event is always an emotional one for me. I have never felt the tranquil that I do when I am here. I love that so many of us can come together to celebrate the life of our loved ones that have passed on. I do suggest that you come early to pick up you lantern kit. Every year the crowd seems to be growing more and more. And I would park at Ala Moana shopping center or bus it. Parking is scarce once everyone comes to stake their place on the beach early in the morning. I have been doing the lantern float for 6 years now. When my papi passed away, this was something personal that I could do each year for him. I love him and miss him so much. For the past two years, the month of May especially has been a very hard month for me. I lost my childhood friend, who later became my better half for 2 1/2 years, to a car accident two years ago. Then last year, also in May, my uncle passed away from cancer. My family and I got there around 11-1130ish. There was already a really long line at the tent. I heard later that they ran out of lanterns early this year. We actually picked up 3 lanterns and took them back to my Primos hotel to decorate there. I did one for a friend who could not be there to do one for his loved one. We went back at 6pm to watch the show and wait until they gave the okay to light our candles and let our lanterns float. It doesn't matter how long I've been participating in this, I always end up crying as I watch my lantern float away. But, I feel so much better later. Like the weight of the world was lifted of my shoulders .... It's hard to explain. Sure, you can always talk to your loved ones that you've lost ... But, there's something about this event that makes it so much more personal. This is a very beautiful event that I am so very thankful for. I love you papi :( read more

This was my very first time experiencing the lantern floating ceremony. It was indeed a very beautiful and peaceful ceremony. We started off by waiting in the lantern pick up line since 3:30 AM just to get a lantern at 10 AM. We were number 7 in line... After that we head back home and write our personal messages to the deceased and I went to purchase a beautiful white Micronesia ginger blossom lei to add to the lantern. We came back to the beach at 6 PM to attend the ceremony and release the lantern at 7:12 PM. There were so many people there to join in the celebration. Although it was crowded, people were still very friendly and considerate of each other. Even though I don't believe in the Shinto religion, I still felt like I enjoyed the experience. I probably won't plan on coming back since it is a very long and tiresome process. read more

This event never ceases to amaze me nor does it ever become less emotional. Thousands of people yet no one seems to be a stranger. We are all here to celebrate, to mourn and to remember those who we love and for a brief moment feel their presence in our hearts, in our souls as we float our lanterns in tribute to those who have left our hearts a bit fuller because they were part of our book of life. Each year I'm here with many others decorating our floats, eating, laughing, sharing stories and making new friends. This event is truly beautiful and shows how wonderful everyone's heart is. This year was extra special and emotional for me. Putting my float together and writing departing words to someone who was taken from me far too soon was overwhelming. As the tears flowed and for the first time I could not control it. It was comforting to have my friends there supporting not only me but each other. The ladies across of us looked at me with a smile and tear soaked eyes giving me the nod that it's ok. Strangers, showing such compassion and empathy. I did look up to see a photographer taking our pictures. I'm hoping it doesn't show up anywhere. My friends chanted in Hawaiian as we walked into the water to launch our floats, that there was breath-taking, heart melting and so very spiritual. Simply beautifully. I truly recommend attending this event. If you don't have anyone, come alone, you won't be alone for long. Your neighbor becomes your family. Float your lantern and hug the person next to you, whomever it maybe. You just never know what that hug may mean. I can't wait to do this again and again and again! read more

Excellent free entertainment for the public. Make peace with your ancestors and those close to you who have passed away. This is an annual event held at Magic Island beach park near Ala Moana. Each year the event is becoming more and more commercialized, but oh, well. This event does not diminish in value as we attend every year. In fact, it increases as we continue to remember those who have gone before us trying to live up to the goodness in their eyes. The reinforcement of those values is our own personal religion for attending every year. That is the intent of the event. My plan was to get there at 4am when the park opens to get parking and just sit it out to when they open at 10am passing out the lanterns. That didn't work out. Realizing I over slept, and loved it, I rushed to cook a big breakfast for Gabriel B. and I to eat while waiting in line. It was 6:30am as I drove through the park to see if I could get lucky and score a parking spot. No luck. As I passed the line I was surprised to see how short it was. That got me to park quickly at Ala Moana Mall and cross over. Once i got into the line, I was happy where we were to be at the "U" bend of the line under the shade of the trees with the sign "Line Goes This Way" over head. The people close by were quick to talk about who they were, where they are from and how many times they've attended. All were first timers, I was the Sr. of 3 years. I gave helpful answers with tips when possible about the event to their bombardment of questions. 1 couple and 1 lady flew in specifically for this event. 6 locals were determined to participate this year instead of watching the event on tV. All were hoping to heal the hurt they felt inside for loved ones missed. That was the tying bond for all there. Time went quickly as we continued to talk learning of each other, strangers whom we would not see again. We were on on our way out at 10:20am with our lantern when we learned the line had exited the park. Very glad I got there early and did not have to wait long in the sun. Went home to chill and decorate our lantern. My next plan was to get there around 2pm, set up a dome beach tent in an area of the park that was somewhat secluded to relax after swimming to snack and play Magic. However, after eating lunch at L&L I felt sleepy wanting nothing more to take a nap and not lug everything out. We went back home, slept, and were back an hour later. I drove through the park again hoping I could get lucky in parking anywhere. Struck out again. Driving around the mall a few times, I secured a parking spot on the 2nd floor by Macy's mountain side. It's a nice, enjoyable walk from there while the crowd increased as we got closet to the event. I wanted to see if we could get a spot close to the stage. Not good because the angle just didn't allow for it. So, we ended up in the same spot as we have in the previous years, a little further Leeward from the first screen that allowed excellent viewing. We were fortunate to be joined with Victoria M., and John N., whom I had been texting through out the day to share this wonderful experience. The ceremony as always, for this the 17th year, was spiritually moving. It's great it is open to all religions although it is presided by the Shinto. A great move on their part taking the higher ground showing this to be more important than religion itself. Let this become the true religion for all. The floating of the lanterns started on time, though it was after the sun had set. Previous years had the floating occur right before sunset. However, this made it unique seeing different colors of the orange and red to the blue and purples in the sky. It made for a wonderful lasting impression and a release to living a happier life. As we exited making our way to our parked vehicles we talked about how the event was another smash hit, how great we felt and how much freer we felt too. As I write this almost a week later, I still feel the effects and continue to carry it forth. Hope more of you can make it next year. read more

Floating Lantern ceremony is held at Ala Moana Beach (across Ala Moana mall). This was our first time attending this, and it was quite spectacular, there was thousands and thousands of people, they blocked off traffic. This ceremony not only remembers the lives lost overseas by our military, but for those lost in the Nepal earthquake, cancer victims etc. They release candle lanterns and prayers for the lost loved ones. This ceremony brings all the victims who have lost a loved one, and prayers from around the world to create a remembrance and harmony. Its was nice to see everyone rejoicing and offering support to those who have no one. read more

I was so touched by this experience.... what an amazing night remembering those we love! This was my first experience at the Lantern Floating Festival and I was amazed at the organization of the event! I didn't actually get a lantern but I was there early to grab a spot! The large screen made me feel like I was actually ON the stage, even though the actual stage was across the water! The sound and the picture were FLAWLESS and I was able to clearly see the subtitles from about 500 ft away. We thought parking would be a little crazy but we came about 2 hours early and hung out in the park. We parked at Ala Moana by the old Sears and were able to get out easily. The events leading up to the release of the lanterns were just as touching. We heard from a Pearl Harbor survivor (quite honestly one of the cutest men ever, besides my opa), a woman who brought the event to California and the religious leader of Shinnyo-En (I think this is correct...). The Taiko drumming was fantastic and their were dancers and singers also. The actual release of the lanterns was crowded but touching and very emotional. On the car ride back, Justin and I were talking about how it was the perfect example of cultures working together in harmony. Everyone was so caring and respectful. There was quiet when the religious parts of the ceremony were going on and no one pushed or shoved their way through to the edge of the water. This event was a PERFECT end to a Memorial Day filled with sunshine and friends. Honoring those we love is an important step to letting go and living in the present. read more

There is no place I would rather spend Memorial Day than on the beach with a few thousand people, participating in a beautiful, peace filled ceremony of remembrance. While this is a Japanese Buddhist event, the leaders have been kind enough to open it to all who might like to take part. The sight of thousands of lanterns casting their light on gentle waves transcends all beliefs, and is amazingly intimate. My first experience with the event was well over a decade ago, and was something I just happened to hear about. The beach was filled with people, but it wasn't the spectacle it is now. The last few years have seen the participant list grow to 40,000 and more, but it is still lovely, and still one of the most inwardly focused experiences I've ever had. There are three ways to participate. ~ You can ask for your own lantern, one per family and free of charge (though they are happy for whatever donation you might be willing to give) which you can decorate and dedicate at will. You then take that lantern and place it in the water yourself. ~ You can add your smaller dedication to a larger lantern, which is placed in the water by volunteers. ~ You can simply go, and be a part of the crowd. I've participated in all three ways, and will say that of the three ways to spend the day, the second and third are my preference. The day I decided to release my own lantern was spent in lines, first to collect the blank lantern, and then to release it at the water's edge. I was not able to sit back and watch the crowd the same way that I'd done in previous years, and I doubt I'll do it again that way. Being a part of one of the larger lanterns was very nice, as I was able to send a message out on the water without having to stand shoulder to shoulder with other people who all wanted the same moment of release. I even enjoyed simply sitting back and watching it from far up the beach. It is a beautiful ceremony, no matter where you might be. Which means that I'm writing this review a few thousand miles from the event, while watching the event as it happens. While I'd much rather be there in person tonight, I am happy that I have the opportunity to see it again, and even to share it with those that might never get the chance to see it in person. read more

We were so lucky to buy tickets to Hawaii for this weekend. This event was beautifully solemn and peaceful-- the perfect way to pay homage to Memorial Day while being on the island. We weren't able to stay for the ceremony but came just in time to see the lanterns get released onto the water. Initially we stood behind the gate cordoned off behind VIP guests but went around the stage to get a better view right next to the water. Absolutely magical and jaw-droppingly beautiful. Beautiful Event and so many people! I do understand why so many people come out for this event and light their lanterns but tonight I was not very emotional about this. I still give it 5 stars though. Having that many people gathered together in peace is just beautiful. The ceremony was good although I kinda tuned out some of the speakers. I just had a hard time focusing. I really enjoyed the peacefulness and watching people put their lanterns into the water. I actually was able to watch the ceremony on television over the past weekend and I have to admit, it was a lovely ceremony. Be ready for the crowds, get there early to find parking or park at Ala Moana and walk over. HPD did some fabulous crowd control and helping cross Ala Moana blvd at the end of the event, complete with closing off some of the street to allow people to cross. Biggest thing is planning ahead to get a lantern if you want, parking, a good spot to watch the show. read more

2013 was our first visit to this event. We wanted to honor & remember a couple of people, so three of us got together and flew to Oahu for the Memorial Day weekend. The event takes place on Memorial Day from 10am to 7:30pm at Magic Island which is part of Ala Moana Beach Park. OBTAINING A LANTERN: Head to Magic Island. They start issuing lanterns at 10am. We got there around 9:15am and just stood in line. The line is long, but it does go by pretty quickly once the tent opens. By the time we had lanterns-in-hand, it was around 11am. The lanterns are free but you can make a donation there or mail it in. BRING AN UMBRELLA, because majority of the time there are no trees for shade. Once you reach the tent, there are about 36 volunteers issuing the kits. You sign a waiver and are given a big reusable Lantern Floating Festival bag along with detailed times of the event, and your lantern kit which contains the floating board, lantern paper, and plexiglass rudder. There's a separate area under the tent used for writing messages on the lantern paper along with numerous volunteers walking around to assist should you have any questions. It is so well-organized, they should be commended! FLOATING THE LANTERN: We returned to the beach around 6:15pm and it was jam-packed, majority of them spectators not floating lanterns. We high-stepped our way over legs & beach towels to the shore and stood in calf-high water. There was a big and beautiful stage thats partly in the ocean, partly on sand. They showed a video talking about the festival, and performed some taiko drumming. At around 7pm, the sunset was gorgeous. A group of about 4 canoes release lanterns for those who weren't available to make it there but wanted to float a lantern (sign up was online). Volunteers then come around to personally light your candle. Around 7:10pm is when they request you float the lantern. EXPERIENCE: Its very emotional from the start, when standing in line for the lantern, seeing the numerous people who lost loved ones. I started to get teary-eyed when writing the message on the lantern paper. The emotions got real intense as soon as we stepped ground onto the beach park later that evening, seeing all the people with lanterns, listening to the calming music. It is very heart-warming. Even though the crowds were plentiful, everyone was so respectful of each other. Seeing the numerous glowing lanterns calmly floating with a dusk sky in the background, was just breathtaking. read more

The Lantern Floating Festival is a must-see in my opinion. If you're a visiting tourist on memorial day weekend, pat yourself on the back for excellent timing! Parking can be hectic, and the crowds may be formidable, but it's totally worth it! If you're coming from Waikiki, I would just recommend walking since it's so close. You can park at the convention center and take a shuttle as well. Since I was a first timer this year, I had no idea how early you have to go to get a lantern. Of course by 5pm, I had no shot. Silly me! People go so early and some even pitch a tent to make it an all day family beach potluck day, so I would recommend going in the morning to get a lantern. You can always just come back later for the ceremony if you don't want to stay out all day. The ceremony starts at 6pm, and it consists of a variety of performances, like the Brothers Cazamero and a Shinto ceremony led by the head priestess at a Shinto temple (sorry I forgot the name). We heard testimony from regular participants, and I have to say it was pretty moving hearing just how much the ceremony means to them and allows them to remember their loved ones. In typical fashion, I started tearing up especially because it reminded me of my own grandfather who we lost last year. I really wanted to get a lantern in his memory, but I still felt like I was able to commemorate him by just being there. Even if you haven't lost someone, you have to go to this! They allow you to release your lantern around 7pm (sunset). It was beautiful just seeing all the brightly colored lanterns drift out on the water with the sunset in the background... I just felt so at peace. If you've seen Tangled, it definitely reminded me of the floating lantern scene! Probably one of the most impressive parts was just that no one was really pushing to put their lantern in. Everyone waited patiently for their turn to let go of their lantern. Picture baby turtles flocking back to sea once they hatch ;p. If you do get a lantern, I would advise wearing a swim suit bottom or something you can get wet, because you will have to walk out in the water up to your waist if you want to get your lantern out into the cove. Some people put their lanterns in too close to shore and they kept getting stuck because there's no current or anything pushing them out! I will definitely be back and hope to make this a regular event. read more

One of the most memorable times of the year is the Lantern Floating Ceremony. Lantern Floating Ceremony in Hawai'i is one of the most diverse celebrations of life immersed in harmony through these beautiful candle light recycled lanterns that float into the sea. I remembered my first lantern ceremony like it was yesterday. After attending my first, it has become a tradition I carry year after year to celebrate with thousands of others in mourn of a service member and family members, and I grieve, celebrate in memory of my father. The celebration continue to hold this event at Ala Moana Beach annually in full operation by many volunteers that give time to guide, help, and distribute these free lanterns (donations are welcome to keep the ceremony running yearly). Families and tourists gather at the beach during Memorial Day not only to celebrate the three day weekend but witness this heart felt ceremony. Shutterbugs of all trades gather here for the panoramas of the lighting and glowing Hawai'i sunsets. The ceremony is covered by the local news and broadcasted statewide. It's a pretty big deal. Beware that the celebration will require strategic planning and will be limited to parking. Walking and taking public transportation might be your best bet if you're not looking into staying at the beach the entire day until the ceremony. The beach gets extremely crowded with people and the crowds only increase yearly. I've learned throughout the years that as much as I love the beach, it's better to pick up my lantern, go home and return for the ceremony on the latter. Sacrificing sleep on the third day of a three day weekend is worthy just so I can get my lantern. Lanterns always have a large chance of running out so come early. Visit the Lantern Ceremony Hawaii website on the yearly layout of the ceremony, the pick-up station for the lanterns changes all the time. Take a book, a beach chair and a pair of shades because waiting can take a while. There are two lines. Those wanting to float their own lanterns can pick-up your lanterns between 10am-4pm. The lantern comes with the recycle bag, and items to assemble your recyclable lanterns. The tent provides a place with pens, and other creative items to decorate them with. A separate line is for leaving a memorial message in a strip of paper and this is then compiled with larger lanterns to be then floated off from an outrigger into the sea during the ceremony. Ceremony commences at 6:30 to 7:30 at night, which is the most breathtaking, emotional and heart felt part of the evening. Bring something to light your candle with. The outriggers begin releasing the larger lanterns into the ocean at 7:30pm while the people gathered on the beach slowly release theirs. At the end of the night, the lanterns are then picked up at the edge of the peninsula to be taken apart, recycled and reused once again for next year's ceremony. Thank you to the volunteers and staff for making this day very organized, earth friendly, and peaceful for us. Coming to this ceremony has become special to me. Each passing year I release a lantern is a symbol of me letting go a piece of my father and a strip of my soul. To me, it's one of the many ways I grieve. But what matters most, is I never feel alone on this day while many others can mourn and celebrate with me. GREAT EXPERIENCE!!! What can I say, I was impressed!! As a current resident in the bay area, but raised from the Leeward side of O'ahu, this had been my very first experience.... Off the bat, my family had decided to take part of this great ceremony. We were planning to come here at 4am to save a spot, but of course, we ran late. We got there at about 6am :/ The parking lot was closed and there was no parking to be found. Drove around for about 10minutes and we were lucky to get some parking spots! We unpacked our essential "camping equipments", set out our area up, and we were able to relax and enjoy a fun filled day! We ended up cooking/swimming/play football as we waited to get our floating lantern package. My mom got to go to the special line and received her package without waiting in a long line :) Our friends stood in line so we didn't wait either :) At about 3/4pm Ala Moana Beach turned into "occupy O'ahu". There were sooooo many people!! Luckily we were next to some friendly locals, we joined tents to keep others away from our make-shift "compound". (people can be so rude and walk through our tents) When it was time to float our lanterns into the water, we had to go through A LOT of people. We lite our lanterns so we could walk through faster :) This is a MUST DO EXPERIENCE!! I am so lucky to have heard about this only days before it happened. It's a beautiful ceremony and even though I didn't float a lantern personally, I felt so connected to the whole crowd. Well over 40,000 people all gathered to see this and release 6,000+ lanterns...truly a spectacular sight. Tips: if you want a lantern, arrive EARLY. The tent on the day of will run out. You can visit a few days prior and write your message to be sure you get one. If you want to get close to the beach to take photos as the lanterns are released, sit near the shoreline--you'll have to sacrifice seeing the ceremony on stage close up to ever make it to the water. Also, if you're just taking photos, make sure you RESPECT the people with lanterns to release. Move out of the way and don't clog up their pathway to the water. Getting in the water to take a goofy selfie just for show is extremely disrespectful (I honestly saw people doing this with duck faces and crooked peace signs). I only took photos, but I made sure to make room for the lantern floaters and not hang out in the water while others were still waiting to get in. If you're going in the water for photos, make sure you plan on going at least chest deep. I made the mistake of wearing jeans and ended up having to hold my cellphone in my teeth to get close--there were that many people in the water. Also, plan on waiting at least 20-30 minutes just to get to the waters edge. Then another 10-15 to get to where you can see the lanterns. So many people! All in all, I felt how solemn and special this event was. I will definitely be floating my own lantern next year. When you tear up hearing stories from people you have never met, something is being done right. To keep the love flowing, volunteer to clean these lanterns so we can reuse them year after year! read more

This was my first Lantern Floating ever... and I have to say I felt every emotion you can feel. I think for me the special moment started when my dad, mom, and younger sister together started to make the lantern remembering my paternal grandparents. There are four sides to it and I wanted to make sure each side said something special about their lives. My parents came to America for a better life for us so my grandparents raised us with a lot of love. I have a special place in my heart for them and I don't think there will ever be a day where I don't think about them! I knew the lantern could be any way we wanted them so I added some special memories I had with them, along with their pictures!!! you heard it! You can totally add pictures to it making it extra special. I saw tons of people put leis and beads, etc. Make it your own, not what's expected. :) Lucky for me that I lived close to Ala Moana beach park so I went around 2 p.m. to pick up the lantern and brought it home to make it, but the tent where you pick up the lantern has tons of room for you to assemble it. There were tons of volunteers for the event where you wouldn't go 2 steps without someone being able to help you. I was greeted by 2 volunteers that told me which line to stand in to get the lantern, then after receiving the lantern, another volunteer told me which tables to sit and assemble, or if I preferred, I could go to the last table and watch the assembling process and do it on my own. Talk about organization! As an OCD person, this type of organization makes me feel so darn happy. If you don't live close to Ala Moana Beach, then you can try parking at the Honolulu Convention Center and take the free shuttle over OR you could always park at the mall! We got there around 5 to try to find a place to sit and enjoy the show at 6. It was like walking on glass! I could barely move without bumping into someone. We tried sitting near the stage but it seemed like a lot of the sections near the stage was closed off to VIP..who are these VIP, because frankly I've never been VIP and I'd like to be one... who do I gotta suck up to? When talking to other strangers (no stranger danger here), it seemed most of the people decided to make a day out of it. People gathered their family members, packed coolers of food and drinks, put on their best *ahem* bathing suits and got there around 8 a.m. I kid you not.. some people were there at 8 a.m. for this!!! I guess it's like having a nice long beach day which ends with some amazing memories for all of your family members. After a while, we just plopped down in front of the giant screens they had all over the park and it seemed like the best decision ever. The quality of the sound and picture was like being right near the stage! There was no pushing, no shoving, and everyone made room for you to sit down. After watching the hour long show hearing people's stories about their loved ones and the history of the Lantern Floating, my family was just excited and happy to be part of such an amazing event. My dad actually said "this is one of the most beautiful things I have experienced." My dad works non-stop so for him to take this special moment back with him was extremely important. Once it was announced that we could release the lanterns, everyone just turned around and faced the ocean. There was no pushing, no curse words, no shoving.. just a nice line going into the ocean. As I got closer to releasing the lantern, I just thought about my grandparents, how much I missed them, and how I hope they're looking down on me proudly. It was even more special to share it with my family... they truly cherished the moment. Once you actually get to the ocean, be prepared to get soaked & wet... you literally go into the water up to your hip and release the lantern, which is collected far into the ocean by some boat. Overall: a truly touching experience and what a way to remember that one single moment can create a harmony of cultures. Nowadays a little Peace is what is needed the most in the world. Very few places have so many people being so respectful. It is amazing to be 'in the moment' with so many people honoring those that have died and those that have helped us most. For those that may not know- it is organized by a Buddhist faith group that tries to promote peace in the world. They invite many people to share in a moment of peace and remember the dead. I have heard that they are trying to help New York City also have an event similar that promotes peace. It is a very somber and emotional event that is very comforting. read more

After going for the first time a few years ago, I've made sure that I requested Memorial Day off just so I could go. It is such a great experience, and definitely worth spending all day at. I went pretty early, around noon or so. Parking is pretty crazy which is why I went so early. I just parked at Ala Moana. The beach wasnt too busy so I quickly claimed my spot! Set up a bunch of blankets and coolers so we would have enough room when people start to show up. They have food booths going on all day I think, so I didnt have to leave to get lunch/dinner :] Around 4pm it got insanely crowded! There were tents up in every grassy area, beach towels that covered every inch of sand, and soooo many people! The line was crazy long to make the lanterns! But it moves fairly quickly. Shinnyo-En (the temple that puts on this service) just asks for a donation for the lanterns. You're able to write/design whatever you want, and you assemble your own boat. They had the opening ceremony with hula dancers and performers... People talked, important people were introduced. When the lanterns were released, it was breathtaking. SO BEAUTIFUL. I'm getting chicken skin just thinking about it. Definitely a sight to see. People also let go floating lanterns so we enjoyed watching them float away. Tips: -If you don't want to get your things trampled on, set up your spot closer to the top. People start to bumrush when its close to lantern time. OR just gather your things and put them away just before its time to let go lanterns. -bring your own lighter! they have people that come around with lighters, but theres so many people, it normally takes a while before someone lights yours. -the earlier you go, the better. No line to make your lantern, prime spot picking, easier to find parking. -bring sunscreen! Otherwise, you'll burn. Umbrellas/tents are great too! -I brought my own Sharpie pens to decorate my lantern... but they provide black ones at the tent :] read more
