Remember that day - the one after the work Christmas party - when you crawled into the office craving coffee and bacon? Only to remember that the local cafés, while ok at delivering caffeine, muster a woeful bacon and egg roll? Well you're saved if you work near Market Street and Flinders Lane.
KCL is a café that delivers on food and their bacon and egg rolls are among the best - big, buttery, with crispy bacon and an egg that'll dribble the yolk everywhere if you're not careful. And best of all they're about $5.
From the outside the place looks like a small town cafeteria that might hock stale sangers and thermonuclear pies to truckies and itinerants. It's also hidden - literally, behind some plants - in a corner between a hair salon and a Cafenatics.
So there has to be something special here (and not just owner Wadi, an Egyptian with a preternatural ability to remember the names of even his less regular customers) to bring in the breakfast and lunchtime throngs that it does.
It's not the coffee. If you're after a coffee to cure that hangover, this is not the place to go. While it does come in Starbucks-sized buckets for a quarter of the price, you're better off staying the office and making a cup of instant. It'll be better.
It's the food. Good, cheap tucker that looks so easy you wonder why other places find it so hard to do. You've got salads (vege and fruit), a sandwich bar with a big selection of fillings, pasta, soup, foccacias, pastries and falafel.
